Kelly had a plan to hit some peaks in the middle of the metropolis. I had hiked some of these peaks back in 2009. Nothing since, so I was game.
Fun day bouncing around to the different trails and peaks. Great lunch afterwards at El Super Tacos.
Good times. Thanks Kelly! :)

Early morning hike in the Phoenix Mountain Preserve. I had issues getting out of the noise with all my gear and ended up getting to the TH without my headlamp. This caused me to change my plans slightly and start at the TH off of Thunderbird and Canterbury. Going CC, this makes Shaw Butte the first mountain. (Typically, I start at 7th Ave and do North Mountain first). Got on the trail around 5:15am. Still dark out, but enough light to hike the road up. Took some pictures at the top and then continued around the west side of Shaw Butte. When I reached the valley I took the Christiansen over to where it connects to the Maxine Larkin Trail. About the midway point on the Maxine loop there is a use trail that I use to take me to the top of North Mountain. Interestingly, looking at the official GPS route, I noticed that the route up North Mountain is quite a bit different than the one I take. I don’t think I’ve ever used that route to ascend North Mountain. At the top, I touched the fence and then took the road down to what is now signed as the 101 “Phoenix Mountain Preserve” Trail. This trail forks at the saddle and I took the trail that headed back into the valley. I then used the Christiansen and a couple of use trails to get back to the TH. Weather was great. Not much wildlife except for quail and chipmunks. Quite a few users enjoying the early morning. 54 hikers, 4 runners and 1 biker.

After hiking North Mtn, I drove over to the Shaw Butte trailhead and took trail # 306 up. The trail was very well maintained. There were several walkers, a few joggers, and even someone on a mountain bike. At the top, there were many radio towers enclosed in fences. I needed to take a spur trail to get to the high point. At the high point of the mountain, I found a few painted rocks but no registry, probably because of the volume of the people doing this hike. There was a different spur trail heading Northwest which I took for a while that was simply a loop. Since it was lower than the summit, I turned around at a certain point and hiked back down trail # 306 but this time I took the Southern branch down and back to the trailhead.

Flowers seen: brittlebush, orange globe mallow, yellow poppies, scorpion weed, ocotillo...

Stats:

Total Distance = 4.62 mi RT
AEG = 905 feet
Strava moving time = 1 hr 55 mins

Today was the day. Shaw Butte is my way to practice elevation, one hill after another and another and another and... well you get the idea. I decided to hike in the AM since it was supposed to be in the high 70s in the afternoon. I think everyone else had the same idea as there were hikers everywhere, plus dogs and some bike riders.

It was a nice morning, altho it felt humid to me as I made my way on the connector trails to get to the first climb. I saw a Starling ontop a saguaro which was an unusual site, the first of two today. I do appreciate that the roadway/trail is so much nicer since this is already a bit of a struggle for me. I noticed some new plants making their way above the ground and as I got up the second hill, yep, I was in Scotland. It was so very green over the valley toward North Mountain.

I continued up the longest hill and finally made it to the intersection with the towers road. Here I would get quite the critter show. I had already seen a couple squirrels and now there were two AND a mouse/rat in the corner near the rock and tree. I don't recall ever seeing a mouse/rat when hiking. I did my best to get pictures of the show they were putting on. After the entertainment I hiked up to the towers and back down.

I debated going to the motel but before I could make up my mind, my feet were heading down the direct hill, so I guess I was going; it just took a second for it to register in my brain  . It's a steep but short hill and then I headed to the old motel grounds. Just before getting there I noticed what looks like an alternate road that went down the side of a hill. I have included the photo. I've not seen that before. It is not a trail. If any of you get up that way, see what you think. I just read
Using a Harley Davidson motorcycle and liberal amounts of dynamite, he built two steep, windy roads from where 15th Avenue dead ends to a small peak he had leveled just below the summit of 2,149-foot Shaw Butte.
It would be nice if there could be some sort of plaque up there with the story of Cloud 9.
Customers debarking at the restaurant were greeted by a sign that perhaps only semi-humorously warned, “No Parking: Low Flying Airplanes.”
I headed back knowing I had the "direct" hill to get up but it's short, kind of. I tried to keep my head down so I wouldn't see how far up I had yet to go. I stopped to get a photo of a reborn Desert Lavender plant. I was fairly pleased with my pace up. From here it was clear sailing, other than stopping for photos and admiring my surroundings. There were still so many people out on the trail but I thought that was actually a good thing for their hearts and lungs. I headed to the VC via the dam trail; even that very short distance had hikers, bikers and a dog.

WATCH 10:13AM-12:15PM, 5.20 miles burning 848 calories, elevation 1371-2147. 35% Zone 4 Anaerobic (149-167bpm), 29% Zone 3 Aerobic (131-148bpm), 35% Zone 2 Weight Control (112-130bpm). Starting temp 60.7, sunny with some clouds and 49% humidity (so I was right).

Thanks to my grandson, I've had the lung funk for the last week and a half. Tired of hacking and only doing flat stuff, it was time to stretch the lungs a bit. I headed for @Tibber territory to hit a few I had not done in 13 years.

Starting from the Shaw Butte TH off of Central Ave, a CCW loop hitting Shaw Butte, North Mountain, crossing the 51, looping The Point Tapatio, back under the 51, past the North Mountain Visitor Center, to my awaiting vehicle.

A tad chilly to start but with shorts and a tee shirt I warmed up quickly on the climb to the top of Shaw Butte. Just a handful of hikers making the climb. Continuing the loop, I stopped at the ruins for Cloud 9 restaurant that burned down back in Nov 1964.

Back down to the valley floor and then I made the climb up the use trail on the west side of North Mountain. It's a decent climb, with the last couple hundred yard being steep and rocky.

Up top I ran into a couple that had just finished activating North Mountain for SOTA. I asked him if that's what he had done and he seemed shocked that I knew what that was.

They've put a lot of time and money into building retaining walls and paving the path down since the last time I was here.

I hopped over the 51, completed my loop around The Point Tapatio and made my way back to the beginning.

I was still hacking, but it felt good to get in something with a bit-o-elevation and mileage.

Got in the old favorite close to home. A little chilly when we started, did the loop ccw to get warmed up in the flat section. Added on the western prominence for good measure as well.

Lasso figure eight. It got almost too hot for Dese, but she powered through. She's a desert dog. Wetted her head down a few times. I guess it's nice this area wasn't developed.

angela suggested this combo for today
we got going around 1300 (once i was escorted to the proper meeting location  )
i've done north mountain and shaw butte twice before, most recently in 2014 :o
this is the first time i've been on all of 306 and connected shaw butte with north mountain
we went up shaw butte first, looked around a bit up top, then continued on the loop
then up north mountain and back along 7th street
brittlebush and scorpionweed, then some lupine near north mountain
sunny skies
nice to be back up here - i enjoyed the hike
i also enjoyed the root beer and peanuts afterwards :)
thanks angela!

Kelly had promised me a hike before the end of the month and this is what I came up with. I threw in North Mountain cuz I know she likes Peaks. And, of course, as luck would have it, this would be the warmest day of the week :( . She was at the Peoria TH but I wanted to meet at the North Mountain VC cuz it's nicer; especially for the after-hike beers. HAZ blipped out on me; I had to fill in the route from the bottom of the paved hill over to the North Mountain saddle.

So off we went and we were immediately distracted by the loud birds singing; another couple hiking near us commented as well. I decided to see if I could film one of the birds and I was able to do that, but then it wouldn't shut up  . [ youtube video ] And the reason it was so loud, a Northern Mockingbird. I took Kelly up on the dam before we crossed over to the main trail toward Shaw Butte.

As we stepped on the Shaw Butte Trail I noticed this column of black rock next to a smoothed over trail from where you get on it from the south. In fact, they did some incredible work as it is now completely filled in. As you may know, it is a road used to get to the towers and was in really rough shape. The drive up had to be quite the ordeal. Well no more; at least until the south saddle. It is really quite impressive how they filled in all the divits and built three major drainage channels. The old pipes are no longer there either. I took pictures to document this awesome repaired access road/trail. Apparently the leveling took place mid-December.

The Brittlebush was showing off so brightly I felt the need to put on my sunglasses :D . It kept us company for much of our hike today. You could see it blooming on the various surrounding mountainsides too. There was other flora including a really nice Pincushion with one bloom. Up at the towers, we checked out the rock pile with the two flags and then headed down the paved road, but not before admiring the distant views north.

I sent Kelly on her way to check out the western towers. I normally do this but not if I'm going to hike North Mountain as well. So I had a nice little break. The Brittlebush lined both sides of the trail going toward Cloud Nine Motel area. Going down from here is not the best trail tread as it's slippery and steep. Oh, we smelled the Scorpionweed's In-N-Out Burger. I've noticed that smell on several of my city hikes and today, we figured out what it was. We headed down the southeast side which was pretty ripped up when I hiked it in October but it looks like they've done some work on it.

It seemed to be getting warm by this point as we had lost our breeze. We hiked Trail 100 north until the junction with the connector to North Mountain. There was lots and lots of lupine along here :) and as usual, nearly impossible to get a good photo. Luckily our missing breeze also greeted us at the saddle and some shade as we hiked toward the pavement. At the North Mountain Trail I told Kelly to go ahead at her pace and basically I would just keep hiking and would see her on the way down.

Fortunately, there was some shade which really helped. When I came to the last turn south I had decided if there wasn't a breeze this is where I would stop. Well guess what... yep, a breeze, so I headed up that last little stretch and strained a bit to see where Kelly was. Well she was hiding off to the left where I thot she might be waiting for me. So we finished the last little stretch together even though she had gone up and around the towers already.

There were some nice flowers on our way down enjoying the shade. My poor big toes did not enjoy this journey as they are still recovering from a hike where the new shoes were 1/2 size too small which I didn't realize until I had to come down Union Peak.

We enjoyed our beers and roasted peanuts at the ramada off the parking lot. It was a good hiking hike for me and Kelly tolerated my whining about the heat and the steep from time to time. Fun to catch up too.

WATCH 1:06PM forgot to turn off the hike. Elevation 1470-2264. 133bpm/171 max burning 1515 calories. Temp 72.8 sunny and 12% humidity.

Alyssa requested an easy hike to start getting back into shape after spending the fall finishing her master's degree and not getting enough exercise in. She picked Shaw Butte. It took some convicting to get Victoria to go, she thought she would get a better workout going to the gym!

Initially we went to the north parking lot (which is the one Alyssa picked) but it was full and the adjacent neighborhood had signage indicating they would tow hikers vehicles if parked on their streets. So we drove all the way around the park and parked at the south trailhead. This one is larger, was less crowded, and is where we parked previously.

We did the loop in our usual clockwise fashion. Alyssa was right to pick an easier trail, even this one was tough on the inclines for her, Juan did better.

Other than that it was a good fitness hike

I had to get the mail so I planned to do this hike on the way back. It appears they won't be able to fix our box for two months :( . At the North Mountain VC, when I initially got out of Tonto 3 I thot I may have erred in doing an afternoon hike, but as it turned out, the temperature seemed pleasant enough.

I hiked counterclockwise and as usual, as I go up I give myself the right to bail if I don't have it. I am still trying to get up to snuff with the elevation part of my hiking. I'm also trying to hit all of my normal city hikes that I think keep me in shape. Happily, I did pretty well on the hills so I felt pretty good. I also hiked to the other towers as it's so close as you wrap around the backside (west).

Once I started rounding the old Cloud 9 motel area, the trail deteriorated substantially and was this way all the way until the bottom on the southeast side. I tried to take a photo of one section that is now very wide but the shadows made it hard to see. Needless to say, it was very slow going.

I was surprised to see as many hikers as I did during this time frame; one fellow with a backpack and puffing pretty hard coming up that back hill. Sunday I saw a hiker with a backpack too so apparently folks have some big trips coming up. There were probably about 1/2 dozen lizards and I saw quite a few quail in the lower section near the VC. I took the longer trail back.

In the parking lot, I had my beer and opened my mail. Holy Cow! have you seen that booklet on what and who we are voting for this election :o . Sheesh. And of course, all the political advertisements in all sorts of shapes and sizes and colors.

WATCH: 1:42-3:51PM, 5.45 miles, 1469-2267 elevation, 138 avg bpm/166 max. 47% Zone 5 maximum, 44% Zone 4 anaerobic, 9% Zone 3 aerobic burning 928 calories. Temp 71.9 Sunny degrees and only 19% humidity :)

I had to pick up the mail. Ya, not my normal route. Our side of the mail boxes has been broken for a few weeks. I get emails from USPS as to what is in my mail so unless it's important, I don't have to drive 11 miles, and in this case, hike, to get it everyday. This hike is on the way to the post office off of Hatcher and 7th St. I think the last time I was at this post office was nearly thirty years ago as I go to the closer one on Rose Garden and Cave Creek Rd. You would think they would have changed to that office by now, since the growth of the Valley.

Anyway, I realized I forgot my water bottle but I happen to carry a partially filled plastic bottle of water so I grabbed that and added some more water at the VC. I started hiking on the 100 and veered around to take the valley up via the west side and then head south to join up with the paved portion of the North Mountain Trail. It adds a little more mileage and I can avoid some of the road noise which I detest so much. There were quite a few hikers out until I made the turn east.

It seemed a bit humid as I made my hike up North Mountain so I was glad to hit the shade putting one foot in front of the other and extending my stride. I thot I would probably have to stop to catch my breath but I was able to keep moving. I always look forward to that last turn. I made my way up to the towers and headed back down.

Along the way I noted there had been quite a bit of rock fall in the cement gutters on the inside of the road. In fact, the rocks sometimes covered the built-in drainages; I wonder if they are aware of that? My shins were surprisingly, still a little sore from Sunday's hike. I haven't had sore shins in a long time so I tried to be more deliberate with my steps.

Once back down to the 100 I decided to hike over to and on the dam. I would take the Shaw Butte Trail back to the VC except it was a little further distance going south than I thot. Oh well, no big deal. Still lots of hikers and dogs out. It definitely felt a tad warmer.

While drinking my Huckleberry Hefe I was surprised to learn their trademark logo was from Carroll College, one of the colleges I went to for a year to do my Montana legislative internship.

Sneak peak: on our trip via Cedar Breaks we stumbled on quite a site next to Panguitch Lake. There were hundreds of White Pelicans flying in the air, not in any particular direction. I think they were just flying the thermals. It was an amazing site and not easy to film but I did and here is your sneak peak - [ youtube video ]

WATCH: 7:50-9:32AM 4.77 miles, 1378-2064 feet, 132 avg bpm/163 max. 29% zone 5 maximum, 43% zone 4 anaerobic, 28% zone 3 aerobic burning 668 calories. Temp 71.5 sunny and 44% humidity, finishing with temp of 80 sunny and 32% humidity.

Fun little loop! Climbing up the west side of N Mountain is kind of the highlight since the trail is actually a trail instead of a road. Got lucky with clouds but otherwise there’s no pockets of shade on this loop. Lovely in the evening tho and a close fast hike.

Quick hike in the Preserve trying to get myself back into shape. Hit both mountains and saw quite a few people for a Tuesday morning.

Great pre-superbowl hike. Hit the 7th Ave th at 830 and went ccw to warm up the legs and get the flat walk out of the way. Made the climb up with only two short breaks, felt pretty good about that. Might be in better shape than I thought. Hit the peak, and did the western prominence for good measure. Took the somewhat off trail descent down the ridge and took a little break to enjoy the scenery. Lots of folks out, but nothing crazy. Good track all the way.

Had no plans to hike Christmas weekend. However, a covid scare annexed me from family gatherings. Quickly started improving so an unplanned hike the next day at least!

Had never combined these 2 peaks into a single hike so away I went. Took a shorter, steeper route than previously up Shaw butte + quickly turned right when nearing the peak to avoid the pavement.

Retraced my steps nearly to the starting point b4 veering off toward N Mtn. Weaved left of the mtn b4 turning onto 101. This brought me back to where people were. Quickly losing light but turned right for the 2nd peak. Timed perf for an amazing 🌇 at the top.

Then retraced my steps again since I was now in darkness. Will save a longer loop for when I start a bit earlier. More adventurous possibilities out there than expected 🙂

This one was a bit of a mess. Victoria and I joined a social meetup group for a hike as participants. From the beginning I suspected things would not go well. For one the trail chosen had an unusual (read non-standard name) the event organizers were using all trails (1st mistake there) and the route was actually a combination of several trails combined into a loop. The statistics (length, elevation gain, etc.) didn't seem right (seemed way too low) but because it wasn't a standard route I didn't have a quick reference to confirm. I had done most of the route previously and suspected that a portion of it that they planned to do was a pretty technical (i.e. sketchy) steep downhill route that is very slippery. I had done this section before and would do it again but I definitely wouldn't bring a bunch of amateurs along. I hade hiked with the organizer before and was familiar with their hiking skill level so I suspected it might be a bit of an "interesting" trip.

Arriving that morning it was fairly warm and crowded. There were a lot of people late (on account of having to park far away) and by the time everyone was at the trailhead it was clear we were going to have a late and even warmer start. The icing on the cake was that there were quite a few people (the organizer included) that had been partying it up the previous night and were quite hungover. It did not go well for them.

It was immediately apparent that they had underestimated the hike. The route was moderately steep but nothing crazy for the area. Within a few hundred feet of the trailhead the pace slowed to a craw as the entire group had to stop every 100' or so to let the organizer and a few other hungover folks catch up and catch their breath. It was pretty comical. Victoria got impatient with this right away (as this was supposed to be our weekly fitness hike) and started hiking laps up and down the trail. Eventually when we reached the paved and steep section of the trail the group split into 2 sections with the more fit and less hungover half going ahead at a faster (but still pretty leisurely pace) with the hangover club bringing up the rear. The comedy came to a head when we reached the top and it became clear that the rout selected was the steep and sketchy one Victoria and I had done previously. I recommended against continuing on (someone might have gotten injured and several of the participants may not have made it for other reasons) and so we all called it a hike early and went to brunch

Comedy gold that one was!

Day off allowed for a rare weekday morning hike. Started from the 7th Ave TH, which was surprisingly full for a weekday morning. Did the loop counter clockwise. Went up the backside of North Mountain, then down the nicely paved road. I think it’s been over a year since they resurfaced. Got to be honest, I don’t miss the old torn up surface. Then continued over to Shaw Butte and went up the road and then down the backside. Touched the fences on both peaks. Jogged what I could. Trails were busy. Counted 59 hikers (with a small mixture of runners) for each peak (108 total). Wildlife minimal...couple of chipmunks. Note: there was a sign saying that parking and the lower part of the road for Shaw Butte would be closed starting 5/17.
