Week 1 staying at my sister's place in Lakeside, decided to hit as many of the trails in the areas as possible to train for some big upcoming events.

Tuesday morning - Woodland trails

4.5 miles, 41 minutes - Took the hound dog up Turkey Track, down the back half of Hitching Post, and then around Woodland Lake. Somewhat aggressive pace. The house is a quarter mile from trail system access, which is nice.

Tuesday afternoon - Country Club Loop w/ Pat Mullen Mountain

4.4 miles, 51 minutes - Nice gentle grade until the spur, then a little hiking up to the summit. The amount of twists and turns on the 2nd half of the loop was annoying. The top of the hill is nice enough.

Wednesday morning - Woodland trails

6 miles, 1 hour - Brought dog again, did the Hitching Post loop followed by Turkey Track/Walnut.

Thursday morning - Timber Mesa

7.5 miles, 1 hour 40 minutes - Thought it was going to be a lot flatter at the top. Still kinda flat, but some rollers. Map mileage was right on. It's a pleasant enough loop, with some decent views here and there.

Thursday afternoon - Springs loop

3.4 miles, 37 minutes - with dog. Both of us enjoyed this one (which is to say, I enjoyed it, as she enjoys any and all trails). Creek is still flowing.

Friday morning - Woodland trails

4.4 miles, 49 minutes - with dog. Turkey Track, Walnut, Big Springs loop, then down Hitching Post.

Definitely a nice change of pace from the PMP...

Second hike of the morning. Could have easily walked from the Country Club TH to the Springs TH (about 1 mile away as the crow flies), but drove from 1 TH to the other. Got on the trail around 7am. Did the hike in a clockwise manner. This is a tale of 2 trails (really only 1 trail, but it seemed like 2). Going clockwise the first 1.25 miles is "blah"! The road is in constant sight and then there is the back of people's homes. All this is exasperated by the timber harvesting that is ongoing. :( I get it. There are many reasons to support the harvesting: economic, community safety, the health of the forest. One reason not to do it is the aesthetics. Really a tragedy from a hiking perspective. Especially when you factor in how nice the rest of the trail is. Around the 1.25 mile mark the trail drops in elevation to creek level and in doing so enters into uncut forest, away from roads and homes (though I could still here the 260 in the distance and (unfortunately) here the sound of chainsaws and the felling of trees even closer) :( . This section of trail seemed really beautiful. Maybe, in part, because of what I had to walk through to get to it. The trail was single track, the trees provided a nice intimate feeling and a nearby creek added a nice water element. The trail crisscrossed the creek 3 times during this stretch. Water levels were such that this was not a problem. There were 2 trail connectors on this loop. One was about 1.75 miles in, the Old Hatchery Trail. And the other about 2.75 miles in and was a connecting trail to the Blue Ridge Trail. This second trail is so short (less than .05 miles) that I could actually see the other trail's trail sign. :-s Oddly, these trails are indicated at the TH, but given different names. (To be honest, I think the 2nd connecting trail has been shortened over the years and is no longer named at the juncture because it is so short). The hike is worth doing if you do it as an in and out on the northern half.

This was probably not the best of ideas.

Adam, Liz, and I were all gung-ho to train for the race, so we decided that a weekend in Pinetop would be perfect. We stayed at the cabin, which was a really nice alternative to crashing on a sleeping pad for the nth time.

James joined us for this trip. We decided on this series of trails, since the race would also take place on dirt. Unfortunately, it had rained the night before. The trails were muddy and flooded in places, so in the beginning we tried running on the rocks beside the trails. This led to a few rolled ankles and some very tired legs. Adam and I decided to meet up where the Ice Cave trail was, which didn't seem too far based on the trail markers. Oh, those markers are sooo wrong! I pushed myself onward to finally get to the trail junction, walking a good deal of the way. I found an arrow indicating that Adam had gone down the path, so I continued walking on that path for a really long time, hoping that he would be returning and I wouldn't have to move any farther.

We met up again right before the end of the trail and walked back to the junction. At this point it made more sense to continue the way we were going on Blue Ridge rather than turn back and go up the big hill again. We tried running for a little while and then ran out of water. Eventually it became too much and we began filtering water from puddles through our shirts. We repeated this when we found the creek, and eventually got back to the Springs Trail junction, where James had run back to find us. We'd been about two hours over due and neither of us had cell phones.

This little adventure really set me back. Messed up the IT band in the right leg, which hadn't even been a real problem until then. One month before the race, this was a pretty big concern now. :(

Short hike with my son-in-law and two of our grandkids. We started out on the north side of the loop. It's a nice easy stroll through a ponderosa forest with occasional lush green meadows this time of year. The trail follows Thompson Creek for part of the loop. The creek had just a trickle between pools containing crawdads. Michael was enthusiastic about the hike but Bella not so much.

Hiked the Spring Trail 633 today. Little to no water in the creeks, we need rain badly. We did take the 1 mile round trip detour to the old hatchery bridge.

After Woods Canyon Lake, I stopped in Pinetop for lunch at Aliberto's. (Alot like the {fill in blank}berto's here in Phoenix, but I liked it better than the chorizo burrito I had the next day at Los Corrales.) Like I do when I travel anywhere, I read the local real estate magazines. Fancy "rustic" looks ... odd ... but it appears there are some good deals on horse properties in places like Concho and Linden. I had not expected to check into my motel -- Mountain Haven Inn (next to the Super 8 ) -- until 2:30, so after eating, I called ahead and asked if I could check in early. Even though the owners were at their daughter's soccer game, Don came over to let me in, which I really appreciated. Stay there if you are in the area. :)

After a bit of a rest, I headed out to do my second acclimatization hike of the day. Since I just added the original description, you can read more about it there. No sense in boring you twice. I will say, though, that both here and earlier at Woods Canyon, I *really* noticed the affect of elevation on my cardio, and within a few yards at that. Post hike my BP was 100/72 with a pulse of 104.

Got really dark as I hiked, and there was much thunder to the east, but I avoided any rain, which was a good thing as the trail was muddy enough.

Got back to the motel, and found a pinkie nail sized blister on my right heel. No big. Was looking forward to the next day, and a pair of 6.5 milers (Ice Cave Trail and Timber Mesa Trail.)
