A slightly earlier morning loop with temps ranging from 71° to 90°.

Tracey had the eagle-eye today, spotting two good-sized gopher snakes, one of which I had walked right on by without actively noticing it... probably because my sub-conscious mind deemed it no threat and thus no need to react. Now if it were a rattler, it may be different, but then I've been known to step over them as well.

We tried out the new bench donated by an Eagle Scout Project, which provides an awesome view of Red Mountain.

I went back to the Salt River Interpretive Trail again and this time I followed all the side unmarked horse trails out and back to the main trail. By the time I was done with them all and did the main trail I had over 7.5 miles in. Not many other people on the trail. One guy was sitting in a chair on an unmarked trail, looks like maybe he was a birdwatcher. An older couple walking the other way had a young husky that wanted to play, which was funny.

Very cold to start until the sun hit the horizon. first 20 minutes my fingers were numb. Warmed up quickly in the sun.

I was planning to hike the interpretive trail and then loop around Coon Bluff, but then I spotted the trail that follows the fence all the way down to the Granite Reef area, so I took that down to where I saw the Maricopa Trail signs and turned around.

Lots of fall color in the cottonwoods by the river. Took a couple side trails to the riverbed and got some nice shots of the trees, river and Red Mountain. Very chilly to start, first hour was pretty cold. then it warmed up once the sun hit. Saw some hikers once I got back closer to the parking lot, also saw a hunter along the fence trail.

Met up with my new fat bike bestie on the Bush Highway this morning at Mesquite trail do ride some sand and singletrack. Started on Mesquite and headed toward the Salt River, took the west half of the Salt River Interpretive trail to the river. Turned west on the social trail and followed the pipe fence all the way back out to the Bush Highway at Mine Trail access. Turned around and followed the fenceline along the river to the Coon Bluff Rec Area. Watch the small crowd and then took the eastern half of the Interpretive trail to Mesquite and Bush Highway. For the second half of the day we did a counter clockwise loop on Wild Horse, Scorpion, and Bush Lite trail. Cloudy and cool today. Saw horses down at the river. Plenty of bikers on the Hawes trails loop.

Not a great start to the day... the front tire was totally flat.
](*,)
Yup, I'm sure the goat-heads I encountered the previous ride had something to do with the issue. But then again, the front tire has traveled over 2300 miles, has likely been poked by tens-of-thousands of thorns and has used up a half-dozen bottles of sealer, so I think its time has come.
Thankfully I had a tire just waiting for just this day, and wonder-of-wonders, unlike my three-hour battle to replace the rear tire a few months back, this replacement was almost too easy and I was done with it filled with sealer in less than 15 minutes.
:y:

The Ride:
With the relative humidity in the mid 50% range I really didn't feel like a long ride today but with only 81° and a nice breeze I figured I'd keep going and see how it turned out.
Good thing I did, as not only would the humidity quickly drop into my 'pleasant zone' but my ride would turn out to provide quite an adventure.

And for quite the adventure, I suppose I should add an appropriate title:
Wild cats, lively horses and a NOT-so-lively horse

I began just west of the intersection of Bush Highway/Coon Bluff Road, riding west near the fence line along Bush Highway then following old horse trails out to Phon D Sutton Recreation Area, continuing and extended out-and-back on Lower Salt River Interpretive Trail #6, and back to the car along the same route.

As quickly as the humidity had dropped without an increase in temperature (thanks to continuing overcast skies) once back at the car I decided to extend the ride. After a quick stop to swap one of two quart bottles for a still nearly-frozen bottle, and grabbing an extra frozen 17 oz bottle, because by now I had a feeling the ride would go on-and-on-and-on.

A quick sprint down Coon Bluff Road to the equestrian gate and I was riding eastward on the Salt River Trail #100. As usual, out in this area I rarely stick with the trail and meander whenever and wherever something of interest catches my attention.

With so many horse trails out along the Salt River I've likely never ridden the same route more than once so there's always something new, and today would continue in that same vein.

As I approached the Goldfield Recreation Site I realized I should make a quick detour to avoid the wafting odors from the restrooms... WHEW! So a quite shot down the ramp to the tubing recovery area and continued my ride westward along the tubing service road. This area includes a variety of terrain to ride along... fine river rock, egg-to-avocado-sized smooth river rock, fine sand, even finer silty-sand, rough gravel and back-and-forth.

Just as I was rounding the bend adjacent to the 'Mud Cliffs' across the Salt River I spotted something of great interest up ahead... a large wild cat of some kind! Currently riding on egg-sized rocks was not a quite proposition so I quickly jumped off, grabbed my camera and started walking fast to catch up before it went out-of-sight. As big as it was and how thick the tail was for a split-second I thought "mountain lion" but the ears were not rounded. A moment later I spotted the black ear tufts so I was confident it was a bobcat. But oh man, of the bobcats I'd spotted before in Arizona, this one was BIG! 40+ pounds or more?

I got off two quick photos before realizing the zoom of 'biking camera' was a bit limited so I ran back, got back on my bike and proceeded carefully, camera in one hand and handlebar in the other (not easy on a rocky surface), hoping to get closer without spooking it completely, as so far it seemed oblivious to my presence. And then it stopped... as did I, although I'd made enough noise it turned around and looked directly at me. Wow, what a perfect shot!
But stopping, getting off the bike and focusing the camera took a split-second too long and I MISSED the shot! Although the bobcat nonchalantly continued on its way, it simply would not turn around while I was ready for it.

Back on the bike and just as the bobcat passed some brush it turned off to the side, sat down under a tree and looked directly at me. Knowing the moment would quickly pass I tried to take a photo while still moving but again the camera was too slow and all I got was a blur and a moment later the cat was gone. Oh well, at least a got a few halfway decent photos of it.

Moving along... next I would encounter varying sized groups of Salt River Horses on either side of the track. Having encountered them literally hundreds of times I didn't plan to take any additional photos... until one particularly feisty gray-maned horse started causing a ruckus with almost any horse in the vicinity so of course I had to stop and start filming. For a bit I thought it would be never-ending but eventually cooler heads prevailed and that was the end of it. I missed the start of it but it was enough:
Lively Salt River Horses

Continuing on, I spotted large flock of turkey vultures circling, which made me decided to pay another visit to the remains a dead horse. It had been hit by a car on North Usery Pass Road near the corner on the way out to the Goldfield Recreation Area on Sunday September 18th at around 1:30 AM. As usual on this road, no matter what time of day or night the cars are going WAY too fast, and this one crippled the horse so it was quickly euthanized, and later relocated about 500 feet off the road to allow for 'returning to nature'.
Another reason for that was for safety for the rest of the band of horses it had been a part of as they tend to return to the corpse and, in-a-sense, 'pay their respects' to the dead. Since the band included a young foal, the relocation would help protect future generations.

Although I'd already racked up a dozen miles by now I continued southward completely off-trail and parallel to Usery Pass Road all the way up(hill) to the Maricopa Trail crossing, along Wild Horse Trail, down Stinger East, some more completely off-trail riding over to Bush Highway and back to the car along the fence line east of and parallel to Bush Highway.

Whew! With this long ride I've ridden over 1500 miles for 2022, which has already surpassed my total miles for 2021.

Intended to head to our favorite beach front spot at Coon Bluff, but when we arrived a little before 6pm, there was a huge fire! We saw flames, a ton of smoke and police and fire rushing in. People were running out of the water and they shut the site down immediately. Note: I didn’t see any news coverage, so I’m pretty sure they contained it quickly. Anyway, we headed over to Phon D Sutton instead and went towards the left to avoid crowds. We ended up bushwhacking for a bit before finally finding a chill spot. Apparently I cannot get enough bushwhacking 😅 We floated for a bit, watched sunset and some cliff jumpers. Then we found a nice path on the way out woohoo! Full moon tonight!
Edit: I learned the fire was caused by fireworks! One and a half acres were burnt near the coon bluff rec area. :(

Another day of indecision... Where to hike? :-k
Nothing came to mind so I figured I'd find someplace relatively flat just to put the last miles on my oldest pair of boots. They have holes in the tread so nothing too rugged.

So I just got in the car and started driving out Bush Highway until something spoke to me... in this case it was an idea to put a wider outer perimeter on a loop along the Salt River near Phon D Sutton that Tracey and I did last year.

I parked at the corner of Bush Highway & Phon D Sutton Road and headed SW along various horse trails until reaching the Salt River.

Should be just a walk-in-the-park, huh? But because of numerous layers/rows of the thick brush it became a labyrinth, except with plenty of ducking down to pass through 'tunnels' all-the-while catching spider webs in the face. Ugh!
At the spot where I reached the river, wouldn't you know it but it was small opening to a steep bank of slick mud. But at least I could see a half-dozen wild horses farther downstream so I backtracked a bit before heading that direction. After a few missteps I eventually found a good spot to film the horses while they were grazing.

Ok, time to move on upstream. The trek to the parking lot at Phon D Sutton became slog through a long series of tunnels, pushing through brush, sinking in soft-sticky mud while encountering a few fishermen and more small groups of wild horses, which I proceeded to film.

Once I reached the parking lot I headed toward Coon Bluff before turning east and climbed up and over the hills, wandering this way-and-that with no specific route in mind, eventually making it back to the car.

While it was not that much of a hike, I covered areas I have never been before so it was all good.

As I was wandering aimlessly on a high point near Phon D Sutton Rec site a movement caught my attention. It did so because initially because it seemed so off... it looked like a vehicle driving far from where it should. But what I thought was the roof of a white vehicle was actually the back of a white horse.

So the moment my hike was no longer aimless... I now had a mission. Although I was over a half mile away from the horses (I spotted three more moving in the same direction) it appeared they were moving toward the Salt River. So... I gauged where they were, the direction and how fast they were moving, then estimated how long it would take for me to reach a point slightly before they did so I could wait for them to pass by.

I'm pretty sure it would have worked perfectly except for the fact my anticipated 'beeline' route was interrupted twice by the need to find a spot to slide under a fence. So by time I reached the point I was aiming for, no horses, just hoof-prints. So I followed them through a small 'tunnel' which opened up to a scene of mom and pop wild horses teaching their young colt to forage for underwater vegetation.

Family of horses foraging in the Salt River

After experiencing that beautiful scene of family bonding, the rest of the hike reverted back to aimless wandering. Which is why I 'plan' so many aimless wandering hikes. More often than not they provide something out-of-the-ordinary and/or something special... like today.

Stopped at the Phon D Sutton Recreation Area to just relax by the river for a bit before driving back to town.
Had no idea there was a trail here until finding the trail-head next to the restroom.
2.5 miles later I had completed the loop.
Was glad I decided to check it out because I really enjoyed this one!
Nice easy loop with some good mountain, river & desert views.
Towards the end I encountered a group of the SR horses in the river and spent a good half hour photographing them, that was a real nice bonus from this stop.

The Stiller did all the hard work by creating the page and uploading the GPS so I thought I would contribute a hike description. Let's see how it turns out.

After only doing 7 miles on the Salt River Trail, I needed to get some extra distance in before calling it a day and decided to do this trail. It's a short lasso loop that for a while parallels the Salt River. It's nice to be able to hear the water running while you're on this trail. There are signs along the trail that describe the environment and plants and give some educational background. There are also alot of trail markers to guide you along the way since it can get a little faint in places thru the brush. Some jackhole decided to try to cut down all the plastic markers, but there semi repaired enough to be able to easily follow the trail.

There is one nice shady section thru a mesquite forest along the shore, but the rest of it is exposed in the sunlight. Probably a nicer trail to do when the weather is a little cooler. One of the interpretive signs that give info talks about a young saguaro that's in front of it, which is not about 12 feet tall. I guess those signs have been there for a while.
