Last day hike.
Shannon down to Arcadia via the Arcadia Trail ... 2500 ft drop
Never thought this one would be possible in December due to the usual snow depth, not this year.
Only a few patches here and there on the top portion, what is going on with this winter ... or lack of?
Big time scenic views all the way down!
This trail has been worked a few times recently and is in great shape.
We had 4 humans + 1 canine on this one ... good company.
It was a great hike down to end 2024!

First a lower mountain stop at Angle Orchard for some Saturn hiking peaches.
We then drove up to Ladybug Saddle.
Hiked up to Ladybug Peak to view the million or two ladybugs.
We got buzzed on top by a rattlesnake under some boulders, never saw that sucker.
Then down Bear Canyon to the Dutch Henry/Bear Canyon T and back up.
Last mountain stop was a drive down to Upper Arcadia where we hiked down to the upper crossing to pick some raspberries.
One more stop on the ride home for some ice cream at Joe's Ride-N-Dine ... AZ be being HOT
Good time, great friend ... awesome mountain!

Hit a little bit of snow at my turn around point.

Afternoon drive up to upper Arcadia campground.
First up I hiked a bit of the Arcadia trail up to the first rocky overlook.
Beautiful forest trail and with a rest alongside Wet Canyon creek.
Next up was the short hike down to Wet Canyon for a visit to a favorite little waterfall.
3rd up was a drive down to Angle Orchard for some apples.
Last stop was at Deadman Curve to watch several storms hitting to the East along with a rainbow, half moon and one killer stormy sunset!

Ride report from Jun 11th 2023. Only two down trees from the Shannon to the Heliograph Trail Jct. Though one of them is right across the start of the Arcadia Trail where it departs from Heliograph. So annoying as it makes the trail look closed. Perhaps a trail fairy will cut that one out. Main issue with Arcadia Trail is rocks/debris in tread, poorly graded tread and overgrowth which is mainly ferns...deep ferns.
We tried to move many things out of the way that could catch you when riding through the ferns. However, we can't get everything because of limited viz. Use caution.

Only about 3 trees down near the Noon Creek Ridge Intersection. Thorny locust isn't too bad yet. Last year's brush cutting has kept it back. Worth a ride but it's rustic and on the adventure side. Not too steep or technical. Corners are mostly very MTB friendly. Sent some trail runners out to do this one a few weeks ago. They said the low viz from ferns makes it a little unnerving for them. My guess is hikers should be fine. So awesome to be riding this trail. In years past, there was too much deferred maint and annual deadfall to really make it worth trying to ride. SDMB's brushcutting last fall coupled with what seems like low deadfall this year...due to nothing more left to fall has made for relatively good summer conditions. That said the trail now needs to be properly brushed out and the tread fully established. Good news is that there should be pro crews coming in this fall to help with that.

Still a bit too much snow to drive into Upper Arcadia, so I parked in Lower Arcadia.
Didn't think I would need anything on my shoes, but a few hundred yards in and I had to turn back and go get my Yaktrax ... lot's of ice on the trail.
I took the trail just down to the creek crossing, good flow.
Cold AF when that sun drops behind the mountain.
Quick hot coffee before returning back.
Beautiful in that canyon with the snow and maybe more to fall soon?

Drove up Graham this evening for just a campfire dinner, ended up doing a couple short hikes.
First up Arcadia to the creek crossing, then down to Wet Canyon. Was hoping to maybe see the Mexican Spotted Owls, but could not locate them in the canyon. Arrived back to my vehicle to find them just off the road and low in a pine, like 8 feet low from the ground ... WOW!
Got some good close up pics and I think if I wanted to I could have touched one.
I then settled in at RTM CG just after sunset for that campfire dinner.

Quick overnight at Shannon.
Joe is gone, Mike is gone ... just one other couple camping.
The streams are running good through the campground. Raspberries are pretty picked over, but the ones I found were yummy.
Rain came in while I was out hiking - had to rush back to keep everything in my tent from being soaked - shouldn't have left camp without putting the fly on, no matter how unlikely rain looked ... summer in the mountains, I know better.
Stopped at Angle Orchard on the way down, since they were unexpectedly open mid-week. That was fun! And the apples are amazing.

Chad & Addie's annual mountain raspberry picking trip!
From Shannon CG, took the Arcadia trail out to about 1 mile and back.
Both our mason jars were full of sweets by the time we got back to Shannon :y:
We then drove back down the mountain and hiked to Cluff Dairy to check on apples & grapes.
Grapes are not even close to ready and the apple trees have already been picked almost clean, 2 apples left that we ate up on our hike back out.
Then a stop at Arcadia and hike down to Wet Canyon for some creek time.
RTM CG was the last mountain stop for a little R&R.
Roper Lake stop back in town to check water flow ended this fun day trip.
Wildlife - I think this was my first time ever spotting 2 endangered species in one day!
Mt Graham Red Squirrel up high & 2 Mexican Spotted Owls down low.

Hiked from Shannon campground to just past the junction of the Heliograph trail. This is one of the best maintained trails in the Pinaleno mountain range. Someday I'd like to take this trail down to Arcadia campground which would be roughly 5 miles.

Wanted just an R&R trip up in the pines, a couple short hikes happened.
First the Arcadia Trail sucked me in up to the first creek crossing.
Then back at Arcadia CG I hiked down to Wet Canyon.
Along the way I had another encounter with an endangered Mexican Spotted Owl.
This one let me get very close, like 5 feet close ... cool!
After my two short hikes it was back to Arcadia for dinner, campfire & stars.
