Started near 218&300 intersection on Friday 5PM, riding all the way to McFarland spring campsite. Very quiet night and morning. Biked on down towards Pinchot and passed some campers at Aspen spring. Rode out 139A towards the lake and explored some. Then headed back to Pinchot for more water and up 139G to 139 back to 300. Lost my sandals along here somewhere, must have bounced loose from my seat pack. Very dusty heading back on the rim road. Got a few welcomed sprinkles on the way back.

1st trip
Grasshopper and I checked out several springs on the Mogollon Rim on this day. We drove as close as roads would allow to each spring and then hiked the short distance to the spring. Yes, we're getting old and lazy. :( The springs visited were Lower Buck Spring, Dane Spring, Aspen Spring and McFarland Spring. This triplog and photoset is for the longest hike of the day, an in-and-out 3 mile hike to Aspen and McFarland Springs from FR139G. All four springs were flowing with Dane Spring probably having the most flow from a pipe which would make it easy to fill water bottles.

The areas around both Aspen and McFarland Springs are quite scenic and both offer good places to camp for Backpackers on the Houston Bros Trail.

From a 7 night/8 day Mogollon Rim vehicle camping trip, R&R get away at 7435 feet, first hike day and number three of three short area hikes to check-out some local Perennial Springs.

At Perennial "Aspen Spring", this hike connects with Houston Brothers Trail #171 and continues up trail for ~1 mile to the recommended "off-trail" waypoint location (see my posted Gps Route) across Houston Draw for the short access to Perennial "McFarland Spring" and recommended Backpack Campsite area.

A very pleasant and scenic out and back short dayhike with history too!

First time I have viewed this Perennial Spring with as much as a Gallon/minute flow.

On my recent 6nt/7day Mogollon Rim- Camping/Hiking trip (6/12 to 6/18), for my first full day outing this was Oregon_Hiker and my 3rd planned hike stop to check out the perennial status of local springs in this area.

McFarland Spring is a reliable perennial spring source which is unfortunately often overlooked by overnight backpackers hiking the [ Cabin Loop - Mogollon Rim ] trails. This quite nice, secluded and more private overnight backpack camp area just up Trail #171 from the popular, sometimes less private Aspen Spring camp area with a quick hike connection to the Houston Brothers Trail #171 [ photo ] is a good overnight choice!

My last full day of this June'14 seven day Mogollon Rim vehicle camping / hiking trip, I originally had no plans for an area day hike, but after my late morning- :next: http://hikearizona.com/photo=425101 ,
it became obvious to me that I needed a little more exercise today  .

I had not been to this perennial McFarland Spring area since September, 2011. Since most of my hikes for this week visit included verifying the present spring flow status of a number of normally perennial springs in this area, I decided to drive over to the Park/TH Start of this hike (at the intersection of FR139/FR9616E) and hike (as it's no longer legal to drive) the short .50 mile distance on FR9616E to its end at the McFarland Spring area.

I documented this in my posted picset, but I might again mention that this McFarland Spring area is easily accessible via a very short off-trail from the Houston Brothers Trail #171 and should offer a nice, private alternative Backpack Campsite to the more popular and close Aspen Spring area.

A mostly reliable Perennial Spring with a very slow "trickle" flow this visit. This flow should hopefully increase with soon to arrive July-August-September Monsoon Rains.

In my past visits to this "Cabin Loop" area I have always hiked this FR9616E section of road to McFarland Spring as part of my planned car camping up FR139G via the Houston Bros Tr#18 / McFarland Spr Loop--> http://hikearizona.com/decoder.php?ZTN=15544

This trip I was car camping in a different area and decided to make the short drive there after my morning visit to the Merritt Draw Riparian Area. I am happy to report (see pics) that the area around McFarland Spring is looking good and this perennial spring is flowing clear and strong :D
