Wally and I hit the trail around 5:30. The new parking area is still not open. Kingsnake said something about this in February. Wally and I went out Dynamite to San Tan and back on Goldmine. We stopped by the marked graves on the way out Goldmine. I believe we had shade for 3/4 of the hike! 👍😁. Great weather and company made for an, enjoyable outing! Thanks Wally! Like HAZ, you rock!!

Denny picked the hike. He wanted to take me to an area I had not been to. I did hike in the area about twenty years ago before it had official trails so it was new.
The trail Denny chose was Dynamite. There were no explosions so that was good. The San Tan area has the same feel as South Mountain for me.
The trailhead had several vehicles at 5:30am. At least the hikers out there are smart enough to start early. We saw several other hikers along the way.
The descent down the Goldmine trail was steep. I never thought Denny would lead me down a slippery slope. I guess you never know.
An interesting hike not far from home. I'll probably had to hike some of the other trails just to check them off if nothing else. Thanks for the hike Denny.

It’s a long drive from Sunnyslope to Queen Creek, so it’s been three years since I last hiked here. I was hoping to at last find some of the brittlebush, creosote and African daisy currently blooming in the Phoenix Mountain Preserve. I hiked Dynamite, San Tan, Moonlight and Goldmine counter-clockwise from the still under construction Goldmine TH.

Dynamite is rated moderate, but the elevation gain is barely noticeable. No more than slightly rocky, in spots. The few saguaro are young, and I saw no flowers. Nice views from the Sparks bench.

San Tan is somehow rated “moderate-difficult”. Maybe that is for mountain bikes at the south end of the park? I dunno. At the north end, it is wide, smooth and fast. Also popular. As are all the trails in the middle of the park. Though it loops around most of the park, I was only on it for a mile.

Moonlight Trail is rated moderate. Really, though, it is easy: West-to-east, Moonlight rises only 130 ft. in 1⅓ miles, ending at the welcome center. Heading west, it would be a zippy mountain bike ride. Still no flowers, but I did enjoy the saguaro.

I was wearing my Camelbak, but feeling a bit parched, so I stopped in the welcome center for a Gatorade and a water. I chugged the Gatorade before I even made it to the cash register. 😅

Goldmine is rated difficult and “hazardous” — which is fair for its middle third. The mile from the welcome center to San Tan Trail is a wide, smooth and zippy downhill mountain bike run. So, keep your head on a swivel. North of San Tan, Goldmine is steep & broken. Not bad hiking, but I sure would not ride it!

There’s two saddles, both with benches. At the second, more northerly bench, there are several informal trails. The one to the north is a steep little climb to a small hilltop outlook. I elected to save it for a future hike.

Descending north from the second bench is where I believe Goldmine gets its rating: The initial 1/10 mile drops a whopping 170 ft. And it is slippery. After that initial drop, Goldmine "levelsout" out at 400 ft. in the next 1/2 mile.

I arrived back at Goldmine TH about 12:30 p.m. The temp was 75℉, but it felt warmer. Supposed to be in the 90s next week! 🥵

The rest of the Valley is at least showing brittlebush, creosote and African daisy. Here? Nada. Not a single bloom. 😕

Some friends asked if I'd like to join them for a short hike over in the San Tans this morning, and since I've never checked out the area, I figured sure, why not! Good opportunity for another check on the new shoes...

Numerous other hikers and a few mountain bikers encountered - the trail was well maintained and very gently graded. Hiking up to the saddle, there were views of the Malpais Hills along with views north of the valley - the views towards south mountain and the superstitions and beyond were obscured behind quite a blanket of ick air.

Once we popped over the saddle, the views were all of the interior of the park, with mountains/hills all around. It was novel being the fastest in the group for once 🤣

Wildlife: Greeted by a cactus wren as we hit the trail, spotted a raptor soaring overhead, and numerous friendly antelope squirrel.

A nice change from South Mountain for a quick urban mountain hike.

I started at the Wagon Wheel trailhead.hadn’t been to this trailhead in awhile. Was surprised to see it full at 5:50am. 😱🤦‍♂️ A portable office and 4 portapotties there as well. It seems they are building a new parking lot. Looks like Wagon Wheel will dead end at the parking lot in the future. When you take the first part of Goldmine to get to Dynamite you can see Goldmine is rerouted over by the graveyard so it’s not a detour anymore. It is the trail.
I took Dynamite trail out. It is in great shape! Had a mixture of dog walkers, hikers, and runners. Took a left when I got to San Tan and took it over to merge with Goldmine. San Tan was good for the short part I did. Mountain bikers started showing up in this area. Took Goldmine back to the car. Goldmine is rocky but not bad from this side. Going down the north side is rocky and loose until you get to the base of the mountain. Nice little workout. If you don’t like the loose stuff Dynamite would be good for an out and back! Had shade for over half the hike. Very enjoyable outing.

First part of a daily double. Bit of a drive to get out here, so I always try to visit a couple of trails when I’m driving this far. Having a Maricopa Park Pass, I felt obligated to do a hike in the San Tan Park. I opted for the Goldmine TH because that was going to be the starting point for my other planned hike. First time using the Goldmine TH. Enough parking for 30+ cars. I got there around 4:30am and I was the 6th car there.

I did a lasso involving the Goldmine, Dynamite and San Tan Trails. The loop was shorter than I thought it would be, but still pleasant. Really enjoyed the Dynamite Trail. It has a very nice elevation grade (ideal for biking or running) and does a good job of hugging the slopes of the hills it climbs. Just on the San Tan briefly to connect to the Goldmine. The Goldmine is a steep trail that offers decent views to the north, but it really is only suited for hiking or the most hardcore of runners. It is not for bikers at all. All the trails were 5 foot wide, which is nice for passing and reptile awareness.

The trails filled up fast. Only saw one person on the Dynamite Trail, but ended up encountering 41 hikers, 2 bikers and 2 runners. Wildlife minimal. Quail and some field mice. Cars were actually circling the lot when I got back, so I relocated for my second hike.

I had never been to the San Tan Regional Park before so I decided to head out there today. I inadvertently took a couple of lefts when I should have gone right and wound up outside of the park. Before I discovered my error I somehow wound up on a summit as I made my way back to the park. Hopefully I will do better as the year unfolds.

This was supposed to be another weekend of hitting the AZT, but then on Thursday last week I tripped while jogging and smacked my knee on the ground pretty hard. Friday morning it was still sore and swollen so I decided to call off the original plan. Did this as a backup hike since I haven't been down to that park in 2.5 years.

Started from the Goldmine TH at the north end. The parking lot is finally finished and there are more than enough spaces, as well as porta-johns. the full $7 fee is in effect but the envelopes are right at the trail, so when you get one you have to go back to your car to put the tear off stub back on your dashboard.

I took the Dynamite Trail to the San Tan, then did that full trail counter-clockwise and the Goldmine Trail to finish the loop back to Dynamite and then back to the car. I would have saved some mileage staying on Goldmine over the pass, but I wasn't in the mood for the elevation gain and loss. Going downhill on the north side is actually more of pain than the uphill part. my knee was fine and I likely could have done the originally planned hike, but this wasn't as remote and gave some bailout options if the knee acted up.

Flowers are starting to dry out a bit, but still a lot of them and a lot of color. Less poppies and more brittlebush, so still very yellow. Equal mix of hikers, trail runners and bikers. Very busy overall.

Was looking for a 7 mile running loop and was out running errands, so this fit. First four miles felt great, kept a strong pace. As soon as I turned on Goldmine and started uphill the bonk was real. Not sure if it was air quality, humidity, tired legs, or a combination, but rode the struggle bus all the way up that darn last climb. Rolled downhill and called it a day.

Oh, and a new parking lot for Goldmine Trailhead! Easily 3x more parking now.

Breeze made the start chilly, from a parking lot only partially filled. Quickly warm up though on the trek up to the Goldmine saddle. First time seeing wildlife here as 4 coyotes crossed the trail in front of me on San Tan , too slow with taking a picture, they were making a big clamor in the nearby wash. For the entire hike until reaching the Dynamite trail saw more horses and riders than bikeriders. Took a look at another way to access rock peak instead of from San Tan Trail for future ideas Anticipating seeing wildflowers along here in a month with the rain and greenery present.

This is a nice park for getting some exercise. Perfect temp ,51°,at the start for the climb up Goldmine , decided to hop up on the summit this time too. Met few others on the trail toward the visitor center but once there ,outside the center a large group was forming up , managed to skirt by only to come across another large group on San Tan, had a Moses moment as the group parted to let me through. Decided to break out my old MP3 player for the last couple of miles. Recently read that wired earbuds are making a comeback,so I’m sure I looked cool with the tangled wires dangling from my neck  Listening to Traffics John Barleycorn Must Die reminded me to have a single malt once back home :D . Lots of construction on Ellsworth and the alternate Ironwood makes for slow travel to Queen Creek.

Again! Biked from home to park, trail running in the park, and biked home. Same loop as last time, chose a different road or two on the way there. Left home in afternoon sun around 3:30p, and I had already done some cardio before leaving, so I was dehydrated and much more thirsty... my little .75L wasn't enough  Anyways, found the bike rack (it's by the nature center, behind an open fence) but had some issues locking up my back in the small inlets, may end up buying a smaller lock. Only saw 3-4 other people out there, quiet trails. Circled the loop Goldmine -> Dynamite -> San Tan the same way. Felt like I ran more sections this time, starting to get used to the routine. Got home about 15m after sunset. Good times.

Bike from home -> park: 3.8 miles, 20 mins

Lived within 7 miles of San Tan Regional Park ever since moving to AZ in Nov 2014 and have always dreamed about doing a routine like this, so here goes. Biked from home to park, trail ran through the park, then biked home. It was about as fun as any new routine, but the trails are nice and the roads aren't too busy so I have hopes that this could turn into a 2x or 3x week thing. W Phillips Road is sandy/bumpy but has a wide shoulder to ride along. Didn't find a good spot to lock up the bike, need to hunt around some more for that, so for today just stashed it behind some trees. Did the San Tan -> Goldmine -> Dynamite -> San Tan Loop, it was nice to get the steep out of the way in the first half but I might switch it up in future outings. Ran went it felt good, walked in other sections, didn't push too hard for this first outing. Trails were in good shape, the park always does a good job w/ maintenance and signage. Lots of other runners and hikers out there this morning. Only brought .75L water and a Gu, that was sufficient. Need to bring a hat or sunglasses next time.

Bike from home -> park: 4.1 miles, 28 mins
Trail run: 6.4 miles, 1:20 mins
Bike from park -> home: 4.7 miles, 26 mins
Calories: 1159

Goldmine trailhead now moved about .1 mile to the west , larger with more parking, now at the end of Wagon Wheel. New bike aid station at intersection of Dynamite and San Tan. Park worker reported he’s been seeing lots of snakes this week. No shade out here so hike would be better if temps would drop another 10°. By late morning hardly saw anyone else out here .

I’ve been vexed since not getting to hike with the popular kids here last month, I’m sure my missing invitation was an oversight by an anonymous someone whose HAZ names starts with a T. Decided to do it today rain or shine, parked at the Goldmine Trail head , started up Goldmine Trail accompanied by my own misty ,cold, drizzly cloud up to the Goldmine Saddle where we parted ways. Invoked memories of hiking in Scotland except brown hillsides instead of green, clouds remained entertaining all day but no more rain encountered. Actually a fine day to hike in this shadeless park with the cloud cover, I think it was the cause of the scarcity of bikers and other hikers. Went from the saddle on San Tan trail all the way to the junction of Dynamite Trail seeing no others. Stopped by the new since December “repair and aid station “ at the Hedgehog junction , verified pickle juice was still there. Further along the trail stopped for a leisurely snack break on one of the benches at a viewpoint, felt like I had the park to myself. Coming down Dynamite Trail near the junction with Goldmine there was a stroller parked there. while looping around the graves contemplated a stroller jacking but alas by time I returned it was occupied by a 5 month old cherub. Returned to the trailhead feeling unvexed, noted a nasty looking storm cell to the west which I also avoided.
