Just a short hike to get some activity in, enjoy the day, and do a little exploring off-trail. Found some nice spots that I'll definitely revisit when swimming season rolls around again.

This one has been on the list for awhile. Used Apache Maid Cabin as a base camp. Some friends driving up in the morning dropped off a car at Bell TH, then we crammed into two vehicles to get from the cabin to Millicum Tank, where we started around 8:30am.

Waldroup Canyon was a little easier than I expected; none of the scrambles were particularly difficult or sketchy. Seemed like we were making pretty good time the first half of the adventure, with a lot of easy rock hopping through the creek. I was super tired early on, but felt better as the day progressed, which I think is the opposite of everybody else.

Saw a possible coatimundi (I didn't get eyes on it), and a few minutes later we encountered another that I was able to confirm visually. We suspect these guys were probably the ones leaving crawfish claws all over the place. There were also a couple of giant birds.

The last third or so things got really slow, with a lot of swims, and I think people just being pretty tired. About a half mile before the crack, it seemed like an emergency was evolving as one person in the group seemed to be getting hypothermic (cotton kills!); spent a little while basking in some sunlight. There was one more swim, which was able to be avoided by a much more difficult traverse.

Got to the crack, and it was late enough that we had all of the litter to itself. Someone has constructed an actual plank walkway across to the other side.

Everybody was happy to be on trail again, and the hike to the parking lot was pleasant and cool; we arrived just as it was getting dark enough to make walking difficult.

Fun day out there. I would rate this as being a little bit easier than the Cash Tank to FR214 stretch of West Clear Creek, and not quite as interesting. Some in the group got absolutely ravaged by bity insects, but they spurned a couple of us.

After a pleasant summer in Connecticut, I came back to Phoenix, but altogether too soon. This trip was hot! 61° when I left the car, but 84° when I got back.

As this is a well-known spot for playing in the creek, the parking lot + overflow has a huge capacity, but I was the only car when I headed out at 7 am. There is an outhouse at the trailhead. I did not see anyone until almost to The Crack, when one hiker almost caught up with me.

I stopped at The Crack, where I had a snack and refilled my water, then rock hopped across and continued up the hill to The Rim. Overnight camping is not allowed anywhere near The Crack; it is a 500 foot climb to the first allowed camping spot. It is a nice spot, but a long way from the play area. Signs at the trailhead threaten fines to anyone who ignores this restriction.

There is good signage all along this trail, but the funniest one I saw is just as you arrive at the Rim and exit the wilderness, “Trail difficult to find beyond this point.” Indeed, the trail abruptly disappears in the grass beyond the sign. No problem for me, though, as this was my planned turnaround point anyway. The meadow on the summit is beautiful and I spent an hour there.

It was getting hot by the time I got back down to the creek, so rather than rock hopping, I put on my wading shoes and forded up to knee deep. It felt soo good! There were several people around the Crack, but I didn’t stay around to socialize. The clouds were starting to build, and I could hear a few rumbles of thunder, but all the way back to the trailhead I met people still coming in, as late as 4 pm. Perhaps I am overly sensitive to the concept of flash flood, but I was glad to be back across the creek and on higher ground.

Beautiful day. It was ~80° when we started at 0930, got up to about 91°. One skinny snake on the trail. Spent about 3 hours at the Crack, relaxing, swimming, jumping, watching dogs run around, meeting people. Only about 5 other people when we got there, maybe 20 when we left. Water was cold at first but felt great. Explored further upstream - there were a couple other deep pools as well as a cave that went pretty deep and was full of bats. Picked up a few plastic bottles on the way out, but much less trash than other places I've been this summer.

I picked up my nephew from school and we headed up to cool off in Beaver Creek. We didn't hike far. The parking lot was crowded, presumably with people swimming at the crack. We just went to one of our favorite spots to sit under the waterfall and enjoy the view. Had it to ourselves. The clouds, the green and the lovely lighting made for some extra gorgeous scenery. We finished off the day with dinner and live music at Farm a go-go in Cornville. Highly recommend eating there.

The rarely used #63 trailhead was full of party recreationalist bypassing paying and cutting off a half-mile for the wet beaver attraction. #63 ascends immediately outta the starting gate, so they don't dare "explore" it far.

Near the top, we witnessed a first; juniper foliage. Unfortunately, brittle dry and giving their life in return for the intriguing morning light color.

The first 3 miles are enjoyable. Miles 3 thru 8 would kill a Y Bar hater. It's a route-finding adventure through ankle buster rock fields. I'm not a fan of pants, but when Bruce questioned the presence of foxtails, I was scared to wear shorts. The nice thing about wearing pants is hiking 4x4 style. The excitement of jumping in live oak wears off quickly, but it sure was good for morale.

Never-ending gale-force wind in my eye along with the terrain/pants-getup was making this semi-exhausting as far flat trails go. This is our third foray, but I couldn't recommend this loop to anybody. Deadwood - Walker Basin Loop just south might be a real horror story but I'd rather hike it than be a pseudo explorer.

Descending #13, you go down some excellent Coconino steps and then a tiny stretch of Coconino sand. Getting back from the Crack, we passed four groups playing music. One of the three was horrible song selection. Overall, it seemed par for course if not better. On my first visit here over two decades ago, it was a trash n toilet paper wasteland. This might be the case next week, but it was virtually trash-free today.

The wind brought uncharacteristically cool weather for late May. Walking home hours later my feet were still wet as the sun was setting. I was shivering but figure that won't happen for another six months in the valley of the admirable sun.

We started at the Long Canyon TH to the most vehicles I've seen at this little used (for hiking) TH.
We headed east to start our loop. All the others parked there were headed a short distance north to the Wet Beaver Creek.

Going CCW on this loop gets the big climb out of the way in the cooler part of the day. With the filtered clouds and gusts up to 50 mph, we were comfortable all day.

The sign on the trail says the trail is hard to follow after 2 miles. It's actually quite easy until you have to veer off an old 2 track. Keep an eye out for the Wire Cage rock cairns. With a careful eye and GPS track, you can follow it until you cross through Long Canyon, just out of the Wilderness. After this, in our 3 trips, we have never been able to confirm that we were on the actual trail. We followed the aprox topo line, taking the path of least resistance.

Making the turn around Roundup Basin Tank Cabin we followed the old 2 track to it's end. Once again, no trail was found until we hit a faint 2 track. I have an idea for next time as to it's actual location.

Finally off the finger, away from the ankle busters and descending towards The Crack, The Tongue and Wet Beaver Creek. These are some of my favorite views of the day. It's a steep descent, but IMHO, the preferred direction.

There were a handful of youth enjoying the water after we crossed Wet Beaver.

Glad to be a a smooth track again we made good time until we crossed the creek for the last time on the way to the car.

We say we probably won't do this loop again, but I have not written it off yet. Maybe even try heading up the actual Long Canyon

This weekend, we were looking for somewhere to see fall leaves. Being a little late in the season, all the usual places like Oak Creek Canyon, Lockett Meadow, and Horton Spring trail are too far gone. With a little sleuthing, and using Hike AZ's foliage report, we came across the Bell Trail in the Wet Beaver Creek wilderness. The wilderness is perhaps misnamed--with all the crowds, it certainly didn't feel like wilderness. That being said, we got an earlier start than most people, so there were only about 8 vehicles at the trailhead (as opposed to 40-50 when we got out). Also, just as a side note, most people were very underprepared for this length of hike (like a group of 20 teens starting at 2 PM with no backpacks (meaning no first aid, no emergency gear like headlamps, and probably not much food or water). I was more than a little worried about them.) The sign at the trailhead said that over 120 rescues were performed this summer alone, and I can see why. All that to say, please hike smart and be more prepared than these kids were.

The trail itself is a nice hike, very easy, being an old Jeep road. The elevation gain is only a few hundred feet each way. The fall leaves were just a little too far gone...we were maybe one week late. But then some were still green, so I guess they don't all turn the same time.

When we got to the main junction after 3.5 miles, we did what no one else does and went downstream! After a good 5-10 minutes of hiking downstream, we found this nice area with waterfalls, bright yellow trees, and beautiful red cliffs. That was a lunch stop I'll never forget. No crowds, and just about everything that can make a hike perfect! :y:

After a nice break there, we went over to "The Crack" and explored another good half hour. In case you're looking at the GPS track and see that I followed the same exact path up there twice, I did. The first time was to explore, the second time to hunt down my missing sunglasses. 8) No success, so Walmart will be getting my business again!

The hike back to the car passed even quicker than the hike in, with many a good dialogue to keep the mind and soul engaged. The scenery actually improved from a photographic perspective, as the sun in the western sky lit up the valley for nice pictures looking back.

The day was completed not at the trailhead, but after scouting potential river access points for our next Verde River kayaking expedition. Having done the section from Bignotti to Rezzonico twice (once at 300 CFS and once at 5700 CFS [yes, you read that right! It was quite the wild ride!]), we're thinking Tuesday or Wednesday next week, we'll go from Rezzonico Park to Clear Creek. Seems like a nice section with great autumn colors this week!

Both canyons to the left and right of the main creek were dry. But on the left canyon, there was a pool large enough to filter from. Of course, you'd be a fool to filter from that little pool when you have the whole Beaver Creek to get nice clear water from! :)

Long Canyon Trail is a trail only a mother could love. Bell Trail alone just didn't feel like enough for this 20-20 Challenge canyon (plus I like descending into the deepest canyons vs hiking up from the bottom) so I figured I would give the loop a try.
Here are some fun things I encountered on the Long Canyon #63 part of the loop:
1. Birthing ceremonies protected by cow gangs (beautiful but definitely required a detour)
2. Scavenger hunt for cairns aaand the clues went missing
3. Lots & lots & lots of ankle-rollers and low cactus
4. Woop! No trail, no cairns. Huge thank you to the folks who posted this route because I would've been completely lost without it
5. Bunnies!
6. The view going up from the TH & the view going down into Wet Beaver are both pretty pretty great

I was excited to get to Bell Trail & hike a trail that wasn't trying to kill me! Lots of people on Bell Trail today. I was surprised (because of the whole pandemic thing) buuuuut also not all that surprised. Bell Trail is great. If fields after fields of ankle rollers combined with nonstop hardcore route-finding is your thing...this loop is for you! If you just want to go for a swim and chill, try the Bell Trail.

I was looking for a trail in the seven mile range that was relatively flat, but not a complete borefest and this was suggested. It proved to be the perfect hike for pushing the miles a little bit more with my knee and the destination proved worthy as well.

We had the, "crack" to ourselves, but did see several people as we approached the trailhead on our return. The knee was almost entirely pain free for the hike and I had no ill effects the next morning, progress. The crack is a pretty spectacular destination. I only wish it was another five miles in to protect it more from the masses.

Took Bell up to the rim and back down, then went a couple miles up Wet Beaver Creek. On 2/14/19 the creek gage hit 10,000 CFS; the flood scoured out nearly all of the smaller trees and vegetation in this section and the debris is now piled on the upstream sides of the surviving large trees. Must've been a sight to see. The canyon is more open now and a bit easier to travel - there's still plenty of rock hopping, wading and swimming to do, but no bushwhacking. The water was clear and refreshing as usual.

Throughout years of exploring West Clear Creek, I've had the insanely stupid idea to try and connect Wet Beaver Creek to West Clear Creek. We finally had the opportunity to do something involving a shuttle, so we decided to go with this.

Bell Trail is mostly just used for access to the Crack, with some use up to the top of the rim. "Officially" the trail goes all the way to Roundup Basin.

We were well aware of the state of disrepair (nonexistence) of the upper reaches of Bell Trail. Along the way, we encountered a ranger, told him our plan (to finish at Bull Pen), and he basically said "you're in for an adventure." Topped off our water at the crack, as we weren't expecting to find any good water until West Clear Creek. As a side note, flash floods last winter have totally demolished a lot of the trees in that area. We had to climb over a 10-15 foot deep pile of deadfall to continue up Bell Trail.

Once on the rim, Bell Trail becomes a beat up trail with some caged cairns to help you out...for about a mile. Then it just became a cross-country trek through junipers and prickly pears, using GPS to guide us in the direction of Roundup Tank.

There is an abandoned cabin at the tank, whose entrance was being vigilantly guarded by a beautiful black-tailed rattlesnake. First time I've seen that species!

Once past the tank, we were on Jeep roads. After about a half a mile, we spotted some rock walls on a small hill to the west; we went over and checked it out - it appears to be the ruins of a Native American fort or something.

The rest of the time on the roads was uneventful, other than a split second of underattention that resulted in my taking a dive and scraping my hands and knees a bit. It's always the easy spots where you fall...

We decided we didn't like running on Cedar Flats road, so we headed off a little early, cross country, directly towards WCC trail. Once we hit the descent, I unexpectedly ran out of water, but figured the creek was just right down there... Turns out you don't hit the first creek crossing until about a mile and a half after you get to the bottom of the canyon. Seems longer than I remembered, but perhaps that's because I wasn't out of water last time...

Anyways, with the creek back into play, the last few miles were fairly enjoyable. My friends decided to finish a little faster, which allowed them to greet me with a cold beer a half mile before Bull Pen.

Embarked on a mission to locate some “Beaver Bulls”.
Started at a chilly 7am and began the cross country walk towards my target area.
On the way as I was expecting I started to see pottery sherds and then surprisingly came across 4 metate imprints on large boulders atop a high point in between two canyons which just so happened to be close to the area I found interesting on satellite imagery prior to the trip.
Soon made my way to game tanks along the way and spots of interest before having a breakfast break at Roundup Basin Cabin.
From there I followed the Bell Trail for awhile along with a lot of gridding back and forth heading west twoards Trail Tank managing to bump one little raghorn who was still packing but other than that no dice.
Was really hoping to buy @The_Eagle a six pack but maybe I’ll get lucky some other time out here.
Still a beautiful morning hiking in new country with the pups along with inspiring some other trips in the area, lots of stuff to see out here.

Starting at the Long Canyon TH, CCW is the way to tackle this loop.. You get the majority of the climbing out of the way from the get go, you get some nice views up top and hit a old cattlemans/hunting cabin. A GPS track and a good cairn-eye is helpful up top, until you reach your drop to Wet Beaver Creek. We lost the cairns 6 miles in, roughly the same place as the last time we hiked this.

We kicked up 6 big bull elk and a large Jack Rabbit between the cabin and the drop from the rim.

The drop from the rim down to Wet Beaver Creek, begins the real fun and views. We could hear the roar of the water from up top, before we could see it.

When we got to the creek, last time it was an easy bolder hop across. Evident here, and for the rest of the hike, there had been quite the flood event earlier. Before we could even get to the creek, we had to get through the remnants of the flood. The creek water was much higher and faster than the last time we were here 5 years ago. This was the first of 4 crossings, two of which we could only practice safety second.

There was a handful of "Hikers" that came in from the Bell Trailhead and were hanging around "The Crack".

One of my favorite spots on this hike, is the wide red rock area, that usually has a comparative trickle going through. This time we could not cross without getting wet.

Up Long Canyon Trail #63
Thought it would be nice to tackle this one in enjoyable weather pre gnat invasion. The tread and route finding have changed the tune of #63 from the lullaby Ksorensen experienced in 2004. Nothing terrible, just demands your constant attention for the later 3 if not 5 miles. Breaks on the edge of the canyon would probably enhance the experience.

Junipers appeared as green as ever. Bomber cairns keep the course. As plentiful as they are twice as many would be needed to suit the occasional hiker. Bruce did a stellar job spotting shear cut branches to decipher the route at times.

Long Canyon may be interesting but you only see it at the upper shallow origin where you cross the namesake then a tributary branch.

Down Bell Trail #13
The top is a nice double track road that gives way to a cairn hunt to the tip of the peninsula mesa. Where a sign warns you about lack of use. For counter clockwise hikers the back should read congratulations, you made it. From here down the cairn hunt is over. Switchbacks down into Wet Beaver Canyon is my favorite part of the loop.

Lower Bell is a classic Arizona hike. The twist today involved four or five swift creek crossings. We aced 'em all, aka got lucky! Only 8 hikers from the Crack back to square one.

Synopsis
I'll hike this loop or a variation of it again but get the feeling it might be solo...lol

There are a lot of things in the Verde Valley named ‘Casner’, including the butte I ascended.

The Casner family had a ranch next to Wet Beaver Creek way back in the 1800s, into the 1900s.
The grounds now are used by a private college prep school.

To get to Casner Butte, I used the Bell Trail, Apache Maid Trail, and a bushwhack up to the butte, and then basically retraced my track.

The Apache Maid Trail has 18 very long switchbacks, going up to the Mogollon Rim, and this makes for a very gradual ascent. I’m guessing the trail was built that way to get cattle up to the Rim (and down again), without having them roll down to the creek. The rim appears to have good grazing land.

The two trails are in great shape, and the off trail was uneventful.
Yes, a Casner Benchmark lives up on the butte. :)

This was a quick, fun little adventure, in an area that was new to me.
I’m sure the creek area is bright with fall foliage in the fall.

Just looking for a place to cool off on the way back to the Valley. I had forgotten how many private property signs there were along the first mile of Bell Trail. Anyway, the red sandstone benches are perfect for lounging and having a picnic. :D
Water levels were high and there were several pools that were too deep to wade, so we swam.

This was a pleasant hike with a couple of friends along Wet Beaver Creek to gauge station/weir then back to Bell trail to the "crack". Still lots of fall color but obvious from all the leafs on the ground and a few bare trees that winter's around the corner. Water flow/level was down but should be real good after rain last couple days.
