It has been a while since I have done this hike so I decided to do it today.

The east entrance to the Andrews-Kinsey Trail in the Fountain Hills Preserve has been rerouted, so I went on the reroute today. The reroute lengthens this hike by about 0.3 miles, but it moderates the rate of ascent somewhat on the first part of the hike.

Much less trafficked on a Monday, making for a better hiker-to-lizard sighting ratio. The summit was pleasant and relatively quiet, I had it to myself for much of my time there. The haze from all the wind and smog was thick enough to obscure South Mountain, so that was gross.

It was a hot and sunny morning with very little wind, and I am glad that I started early.

Route scout flat-lined a couple of time for some reason. I used a tablet computer that stayed in my backpack on airplane mode for the entire hike, so I am not sure what caused the malfunction. It wasn't like I have never done this hike, so I adjusted the distance to what it should be.

I started the hike at 5:00 AM and was in shade for about 1/2 way up to Sunrise Peak, but it was sunny thereafter.

I stayed close to home this morning. I only saw 2 other people on the hike.

I could see lots of smoke from the Adams Fire, which isn't too far east of Fountain Hills. Fortunately for Fountain Hill residents, the fire seems to be heading north instead of west.

I have not done this hike since Thanksgiving, so I thought that I would give it a shot today. I imagine that I will be doing this one somewhat regularly now that the temperatures are heating up.

There was a nice breeze atop Sunrise Peak, so I took a longer than normal break up there.

12th time we've done a sunrise peak hike on thanksgiving, 2nd time from adero canyon trailhead
pretty sure we all prefer this approach
got started close to 0630 viewing a beautiful sunrise
a few other hikers on the peak, where we took a short break and some photos
jj, john and i decided on the over & back
trail didn't seem as crowded as it has in the recent past
cool temps and cloud cover made for great hiking conditions
nice to see everyone, including first timer @dixieflyer

12th annual Thanksgiving Day hike to Sunrise Peak.

Now I know why most of the previously posted triplogs embellish completing the Lost Dog Wash Access Trail. It's because it sucks. Literally it's a sandy and rocky wash, not a trail. Linking it is just triplog minutiae to most, suppose I should've done the same?! When we returned to the car, coincidentally Plush by STP was playing on the radio.

With the heat wave still going I decided to do this hike again today. I pulled in the TH at 5:25 and one vehicle was there.

On the way to Sunrise Peak I ran into two professional hikers, none other than @johnlp and @trekkin_gecko. It was good to see you two again!

There was a decent breeze between the hitching post saddle and Sunrise Peak, which was welcome.

The trails weren't crowded by any means, but there were more people out than I typically see during the week.

Mostly shady on this side of Sunrise Peak from Lost Dog TH. A relatively mellow burn to the summit before six. Dese sniffed out an injured Long-nosed and that was about it for notable wildlife. Subsequent easy walk was a quick tour of the Kovach Family Nature Trail. At least this area of the McDowell Mountains doesn't have noise issues like some of the others.

In deference to the heat wave, I decided to do a relatively short hike close to home today. I got to the TH at 5:25 and there were 3 vehicles in the parking lot and the temperature was 90. When I returned at 8:15 there was one other vehicle besides mine left in the parking lot, and the temperature was 99.

I only saw 2 other people on the trails, and both were near Sunrise Peak.

For the second day in a row I decided to hike up to Sunrise Peak since the McDowell Mountain Regional Park is still closed due to the Diamond Fire. Yesterday I hiked from Adero Canyon, so today I decided to hike from the Lost Dog Wash TH.

The trail is much nicer coming in from the Adero Canyon side. However, this time of year there is some merit starting at Lost Dog: with an early start I was in shade for the first 2 miles, and in shade most of the way to the hitching post. There is sun exposure on the way back, but the sun is at your back rather than being in your face.

There are a good many more people on the trail from Lost Dog than from Adero.

I intended to hike up to Bell Pass from the Golden Eagle TH, but when I got to the McDowell Mountain Regional Park boundary, there was a sign saying that the park was closed due to the Diamond Fire. So I turned around, went back to the TH, and then drove to the Adero Canyon TH and did this hike.

The early morning temps are noticeably warmer now -- this was the first hike that I have done this summer where it didn't feet cool at the start.

Stats above include the 1.22 miles and 94 feet of elevation gain from my wild goose chase at the Golden Eagle TH.
