This is a hike to See Spring, See Canyon, and the Highline Trail to the Drew Trail.

I was jonesing for some color, and this was my last chance to get a color hike in for a while.

🍁 See Spring Trail #185
Based on the popularity of this trailhead (TH) in the fall, I knew I needed an early start. It was 40 degrees at 7:30 a.m. at the TH, and there were about six parking spots remaining. I passed a few people on my way to See Spring. There was still color remaining, but it was probably a week past prime. Getting there early bypassed the crowds, but it also didn't allow time for the sun to get high enough in the sky to light up the maples. There were two groups camping at the spring.

🍂 See Canyon Trail #184
Next, I thought I'd sample this trail to check out the color there. There were pockets of color, but nothing spectacular. Originally, I was going to hike to the rim and back, but the smoke from campfires had me turning around just above Nappa Spring.

I started seeing more and more people. Close to the turnoff for See Spring, I passed a conga line of 30+ hikers. I half expected to see a Greyhound bus when I got back to the parking lot.

⛰️ Highline - Drew from See Canyon
@Tortoise_Hiker turned me on to this section for fall color a couple of years back. It's his little slice of maple pie. Colors were good here, and I only saw two people (a plus). I went past where Denny normally turns around and continued to the Drew Trail. Some of the best color of the day was through this section.

Of note, there is trail work going on to improve the track. It looks like they might be working east to west and even doing some more reroutes. I hiked down one reroute that is still in progress about a mile west of the intersection with the Drew Trail.

Back at the parking lot, it was a zoo. Cars were parked more than three-quarters of a mile away along the side of the road, making it a single-lane road.

With autumnal colors passing quickly, I figured I had to get while the getting was good - so headed up to the See Canyon trailhead to get a dose of leaf peeping in during the week, in hopes of the trails being less populated.

After a series of tech problems delaying my departure, I was finally able to get on my way and arrived at the trailhead to find two other vehicles there and temperatures in the low 40s. I made my way up the trail, opting to head up the See Spring Trail when I arrived at the junction. Lots of color in the trees, and loads of leaves on the ground. It was nice to sit for a bit, listening to both the babble of the water and the wind in the trees while watching leaves fall. After enjoying the area for a while, I turned back to continue on the main trail. The See Canyon trail also has plenty of color - I continued up canyon until I hit a combination of apparently no more color to be seen, the smell of smoke from campfires on the rim, and my eyes stinging - presumably from the smoke.

I made my way back down the trail, stepping carefully - with the grade and all the fallen leaves on the trail, there were times I felt a little unsteady on the descent. As I got further down the trail, I started passing a somewhat steady stream of people heading in. When I got back to the junction with the Highline, I did a time check, and figured I'd head out towards the Drew trail to see if I could hit the section of maples that I recall passing through when I hiked the Drew-See loop earlier in the year.

It seems everyone was out to head up See Canyon, since I didn't pass anyone at all on the highline. It looked like someone might be out with a fat tire bike, as I didn't see any footprints on top of the tire tracks. Unfortunately, I had a hard turn-around time since I needed to be back in the valley for a prior commitment - and I didn't manage to make it to the section of maples that I had remembered. Regardless, it was nice to be able to wrap my hike up with some solitude.

When I got back to my car, there were fifteen others in the lot with another car pulling in as I was cleaning up and getting ready to head out. Definitely a popular area with the fall colors doing their thing...

It’s peak leaf peeping time below the rim and I decided to hit one of my favorites – See Canyon. I arrived at the trailhead at about 7am. There were some cars/trucks parked already, but there were still spots available and there were no cars parked along the road.

I saw a few triplogs mentioning the maples/oaks along the connected Highline Trail, so I decided to add a couple of miles up that trail as well. Very nice after about 1.5 miles in. Peak colors for sure.

After I made it back to the See Canyon Trail, I turned off on the Spring Trail and climbed up a bit and made my way to creek. I hike up that the rest of the way. I could hear the throngs of humanity along the trail as I slowly made my way up the creek.

The colors were really spectacular for sure. I hiked back down along the trail and made my way back to the creek and hiked down that the rest of the way back to the trailhead. So many people out enjoying the colors.

I wanted to get some long exposure shots along the creek and had some success. The contrast between the bright sunlight and the shaded creek made that tough. In some places, you just had to point the camera in any direction and take a picture.

I really love this trail. I am glad I was able to enjoy the fall colors this year.

The trailhead parking area was completely full and cars were parked along the narrow road in for at least ½ mile. Crazy busy.

I was camping nearby and contemplated checking out the colors in this seasonal tourist mecca. An eagle suggested an option for avoiding most of the crowds, which worked out as advertised.

I'd never been on the See Spring segment before, and coming down that drainage from the rim was unexpectedly dicey with a couple of dryfall downclimbs that might be recommended to have a partner to spot or to push the spot button if things don't go well.

The two JAL 747s parked at the KPAN terminal had transported their passengers over to Christopher Creek and I encountered just a few busloads of them before disappearing into the woods and finding my own route elsewhere.

Parked cars lined the road for more than a mile and I was happy to be complete with my little adventure before the clock reached 11.

It was a beautiful day to share a slice of Arizona's fall colors with the internet photographers and social media influencers. My pictures look the same as everybody else's. If you have an internet connection or watch the weather on the local tv news station, you've seen them already.

I wound up with an open morning so I ran up to See Canyon Trailhead. The dirt road going in was in good shape. Fine for most cars. There was one other car in the lot when I got there. I started hiking around 8am to blue skies and temps in the 40's. I hiked east on Highline for a couple miles then backtracked to the car. Trail was in good shape. There was a little fall color close to the turn around point. I think it is still a week or so early for the majority of Maples to change colors. It seemed like only 20ish% had color. Squirrel and bird was it for wildlife.
I dropped my jacket and empties off at the car and headed up to see Spring. A few more cars in the lot at 10am. Just a little color up to the See Canyon/See Spring signed junction at around 3/4 mile mark. Once you get going on See Spring trail the color picks up some. The only wildlife was the two dogs running at me barking around where the color picked up. The owners leashed them and I took the opportunity to check out the color and take photos while they continued up to the spring. I'd say the best color was the section from 1 -1.5 miles. Still over half of the leaves are still green.
when I finished See Spring out and back I checked out the trees around the parking area. I would say only about 10% have changed color so plenty more color chances in the next week or two. 14 cars in lot when I left around noonish.
I hit the little store across the street when you hit pavement for a drink and snack. I like to support the locals. Unbelievably it was my only stop all the way back to Mesa!! :o :y:
Room for much more color but I really enjoyed the outing and stayed upright the whole day!! :D :y:

A delightful day spent in See Canyon. Literally could not have asked for a better day! The weather was perfect!

We left the east valley at 7a and arrived at the Trailhead at 9a to a nice 53F. We headed up the canyon and lost the few people we saw within the first mile. We started seeing some red maples about 1.5 miles in. So many pretty red maples and golden oaks as we made our way up to the rim. Lots of water everywhere.

This was my first trip to See Canyon, and it didn't disappoint. There were a few rocky and/or steep sections, but overall it was easy going. The trail is marked the entire way with metal diamonds. There are a few very large trees down on the trail that require climbing over, but nothing problematic.

We stopped for lunch on the rim near the upper Trailhead. Lots of cars parked there, and a lot of loud traffic going by on FR300.

The way down was smooth and uneventful. We decided to take the short trail to See Spring which is a real gusher. It was nice to sit for a few minutes and enjoy the glorious water!

The Trailhead was unsurprisingly full upon our return, as was the roadside parking along the entry FR. We saw quite a few people coming and going within a mile of the Trailhead.

The drive out to Christopher Creek showed every roadside campsite full. There were quite a few open spaces during the morning drive in. No excitement on the drive home.

A wonderful hike with fall colors and pines. Win/win. Peak color should be within the next two weeks. None of the trees along the see spring trail have changed at all.

Normally I would go up to See Canyon to check out fall foliage earlier in the month than this, but with the fall foliage being later than usual up there this year I decided to wait until today.

From the See Canyon TH we went east on the Highline Trail towards Drew to an area 1.5 miles or so from the TH that has a concentration of bigtooth maples for about 1/3 of a mile. Then we went back to the See Canyon Trail and went up to See Spring. After that we went back to the See Canyon Trail and went up the canyon to about 7,000 feet of elevation.

The maples were really nice at the target destination on the Highline Trail -- I would describe the foliage as "substantial" or possibly even "extreme" in this area. The bigtooths are definitely in full bloom here!

We saw some nice color going up towards See Spring, but I would describe them as being "moderate" -- a lot of leaves were still green and there wasn't the abundance of color that I have seen there in the past.

While there were some maples "blooming" around the TH, the color was fairly light for the most part on the lower portion of the See Canyon Trail. However, as we gained elevation the fall foliage got much better. Once we got to about 6,700 feet or so the colors started to explode, and I'd once again describe the foliage in that section as "substantial" right now.

As the weather cools off I would think that there will be more color in the lower part of See Canyon in the coming days, but who knows.

The temperature was 36 at the start of the hike and it was 54 when we finished -- in other words a really nice day for hiking!

Synopsis
There is some nice fall foliage in some parts of this hike, and I am glad that I went up there today.

I hiked to See Spring and added some miles on the Highline trail. The See Spring portion had no Fall colors yet. Still lots of green leave so there is a chance. Of course I don’t know how far out. The Highline was mostly green as well. Maybe 90 -95 %. Plenty of potential for some color down the road(trail), I think. Did see a little bit of color.
Temps were good and it never felt hot.
Dirt road looks like it was graded as far as the water tank then a 1/4 mile bumpy. After that it smooths out. Cars are fine on it.
Started around 8 with 2 cars in the lot. Didn’t see anyone until the last 1/2 mile back to car. About 8-10 cars by then with most people roaming around the lot. Very enjoyable outing.
Oh, I did fall once. Seems to be my thing now!

Hiked See Spring trail with Juan, Alyssa, Victoria, Curtis and Kristine.

This was our second hike of the day during our visit to Alyssa's family cabin and was a hidden gem. It was our first time hiking this trail and we picked it as it was relatively short and close to the cabin.

Despite the fact that it was a Saturday in the summer with a ceek nearby the trail was not super crowded. Most of the people we saw were familys that were picknicking in the first mile or so. there was no-one farther in.

The scenery was great, a typical riprian area similar to nearby Horton Creek. The trail forks in tow with one route going to See spring with the other direction heading towards See canyon and Nappa Spring. We explored the See spring side on this trip.

There was a really pretty spot to camp along the creek just before the fork that would make for an excellent entry level backpacking campsite that I will have to revisit later.

Part of the reason that (I think) this spot is less popular and therfore crowded than it otherwise would be is that there is a short stretch of dirt road that must be traveled to reach the trail head. The dirt road is not bad, Alyssa's car made it, but it is bad enough that if you did have a car and weren't the most confident off-road driver you would probably go elsewhere. The lack of a deep pool also would encorage people looking for a swimming hole to go to the crack, water wheel, slide rock, fossil creek, or one of the other more obvious choices instead.

I hope this one remains unpopular because I will be going back.

Another day off and trying to avoid the heat down here. Went to see spring. I usually go in the fall so this was nice to see everything green. I did notice a lot of downed trees across the trail some small some bigger. Once you get back in there there are 2 parallel routes, one that runs along the creek and the higher up route. the higher route was very overgrown. still very nice and calm back there by the creek.

Afterwards on the way back into Payson, I drove up to the Diamond Point Fire Tower. I was going to hike in after the gate but it was clearly post closed and no foot traffic.

We went looking for fall colors, and were not disappointed. We took the last open parking spot at the trailhead. Many people were within 200 yards of the trailhead, taking in the fall ambiance. The colors were sporadic during the first mile, with a mix of green, yellow, and orange. The See Spring trail had scattered clusters of maples with vibrant colors. We then returned to the See Canyon Trail, and the colors became more impressive as we ascended. Some areas were fully saturated, with brilliant red, orange, and yellow leaves permeating the trees as well as carpeting the ground. We had to turn around before we reached the top, as we had to return to Phoenix early for other obligations. We definitely were pleased with the abundance of color. The creek was flowing nicely. There were 3 easy creek crossings each way.

There were numerous people (and dogs) along the first mile and throughout the See Spring trail, with occasional trash (including used dog poop bags along the trail). Beyond the intersection of the See Canyon and See Spring trails, we saw only 2 other groups of people.

I wanted to check out the fall foliage on the See Canyon Trail, so I decided to do a clockwise loop hike that basically went up to the Rim on the See Canyon Trail and came down off the rim on the Drew Trail.

Once up on the Rim, we made our way to the Drew Trail via the General Crook Trail and the Carr Lake Trail. After descending the Drew Trail, we made our way back to the trailhead on the Highline Trail.

Leaves were a mixed bag. There was a bit of color around the trailhead and on the See Canyon Trail for a short distance to the first creek crossing. Then almost all the maple leaves were green all the way to See Spring. Color started getting good on the See Canyon Trail about a mile past the See Spring Trail junction, and the maples were really nice from about 6,900 feet to 7,500 feet, or thereabouts.

On the way back on the Highline Trail, there were some nice colors also, but many of the trees along this section of the Highline Trail were past peak.

Synopsis
It was an enjoyable day in the Rim country, even if the foliage at the lower elevations of See Canyon weren't yet ready for prime time.

Route Scout added an extra 1.1 miles to the hike, so the stats above are those that I recorded the other time that I did this hike.

Autumn Foliage Observation Moderate
Foliage varied on the hike. Foliage was "substantial" on the upper part of the See Canyon Trail, but was "isolated" on the lower part of the trail and at See Spring.

A number of hikers on the trail though not so many as to cut into the enjoyment of the hike. The trail is in pretty good shape although the spring itself is unmarked. This is a wonderful fall hike to do.

Needed something not too long and not too far away, and I hadn't done this loop in awhile, so I decided it would be a good time to revisit it. Got started around 9am. Was already disappointingly warm, and I've been weaning myself off coffee, so I was taking things pretty slow. About a half mile in on Highline there was some bad trail work; someone just left a bunch of clippings right on the trail.

Eventually got to Drew, steady climb to the top, and finally got a bit of a breeze before topping out on the rim. Once on the rim it was more mellow and the temps were nicer, but I still didn't really feel like running once.

5-6 miles in, on General Crook trail (which is well-defined most of the way from the end of Drew Canyon trail to See Canyon trail), I managed to obtain a mild ankle sprain while carelessly stepping over some easy deadfall. I only get injured on the easy stuff. It was painless on flat terrain, so I don't think it slowed me down much above the rim, but coming down See Canyon was a different story. Logged a 30 minute mile on the downhill.

Did the detour up to See Spring (because why not?), then back down to the car. Saw a dog poop back on the trail up to the spring, but didn't see anybody up there. Huh.

Wasn't a terrible day, but could've done without the ankle sprain.

I got Bruce and Joe to join me for a “Fall color” hike.
We got to the trailhead around 7:30am and it was a little chilly. We were dressed for it so it wasn’t bad.
We hiked the Highline part of the hike first and the trail is in great shape. Maple color change is hard to predict but there was a pretty good variety.
We finished off with the See Spring trail. More rocky and grassy in the middle but not to bad.
Most of the color was 3/4 up.
A nice Fall outing and really enjoyed getting a hike in with Bruce and Joe!! Like HAZ, they rock!!

Denny needed a color fix, Joe and I could not say no (with all his crying and sniveling)

We were the first car in the lot at a brisk 28 degrees. We got started early, probably too early, on the Highline headed east. Most of the trees were not yet lit up by the sun.

Denny had noted that about 2 miles in, there was a high concentration of maples. He was not wrong, it was filthy with maples. Another 30-45 minutes would have been perfect to light them up.

The See Spring Trail never disappoints. The center section had the highest concentration of color. By the springs many of the maples had not turned yet.

A short but fruitful hike. Always good to get the stooges back together again.
Thanks for driving Denny.
