Normally I would go up to See Canyon to check out fall foliage earlier in the month than this, but with the fall foliage being later than usual up there this year I decided to wait until today.

From the See Canyon TH we went east on the Highline Trail towards Drew to an area 1.5 miles or so from the TH that has a concentration of bigtooth maples for about 1/3 of a mile. Then we went back to the See Canyon Trail and went up to See Spring. After that we went back to the See Canyon Trail and went up the canyon to about 7,000 feet of elevation.

The maples were really nice at the target destination on the Highline Trail -- I would describe the foliage as "substantial" or possibly even "extreme" in this area. The bigtooths are definitely in full bloom here!

We saw some nice color going up towards See Spring, but I would describe them as being "moderate" -- a lot of leaves were still green and there wasn't the abundance of color that I have seen there in the past.

While there were some maples "blooming" around the TH, the color was fairly light for the most part on the lower portion of the See Canyon Trail. However, as we gained elevation the fall foliage got much better. Once we got to about 6,700 feet or so the colors started to explode, and I'd once again describe the foliage in that section as "substantial" right now.

As the weather cools off I would think that there will be more color in the lower part of See Canyon in the coming days, but who knows.

The temperature was 36 at the start of the hike and it was 54 when we finished -- in other words a really nice day for hiking!

Synopsis
There is some nice fall foliage in some parts of this hike, and I am glad that I went up there today.

I hiked to See Spring and added some miles on the Highline trail. The See Spring portion had no Fall colors yet. Still lots of green leave so there is a chance. Of course I don’t know how far out. The Highline was mostly green as well. Maybe 90 -95 %. Plenty of potential for some color down the road(trail), I think. Did see a little bit of color.
Temps were good and it never felt hot.
Dirt road looks like it was graded as far as the water tank then a 1/4 mile bumpy. After that it smooths out. Cars are fine on it.
Started around 8 with 2 cars in the lot. Didn’t see anyone until the last 1/2 mile back to car. About 8-10 cars by then with most people roaming around the lot. Very enjoyable outing.
Oh, I did fall once. Seems to be my thing now!
🤦‍♂️🥲🤷‍♂️
Just a sore knee and splinter somehow. 🤔

Hiked See Spring trail with Juan, Alyssa, Victoria, Curtis and Kristine.

This was our second hike of the day during our visit to Alyssa's family cabin and was a hidden gem. It was our first time hiking this trail and we picked it as it was relatively short and close to the cabin.

Despite the fact that it was a Saturday in the summer with a ceek nearby the trail was not super crowded. Most of the people we saw were familys that were picknicking in the first mile or so. there was no-one farther in.

The scenery was great, a typical riprian area similar to nearby Horton Creek. The trail forks in tow with one route going to See spring with the other direction heading towards See canyon and Nappa Spring. We explored the See spring side on this trip.

There was a really pretty spot to camp along the creek just before the fork that would make for an excellent entry level backpacking campsite that I will have to revisit later.

Part of the reason that (I think) this spot is less popular and therfore crowded than it otherwise would be is that there is a short stretch of dirt road that must be traveled to reach the trail head. The dirt road is not bad, Alyssa's car made it, but it is bad enough that if you did have a car and weren't the most confident off-road driver you would probably go elsewhere. The lack of a deep pool also would encorage people looking for a swimming hole to go to the crack, water wheel, slide rock, fossil creek, or one of the other more obvious choices instead.

I hope this one remains unpopular because I will be going back.

Another day off and trying to avoid the heat down here. Went to see spring. I usually go in the fall so this was nice to see everything green. I did notice a lot of downed trees across the trail some small some bigger. Once you get back in there there are 2 parallel routes, one that runs along the creek and the higher up route. the higher route was very overgrown. still very nice and calm back there by the creek.

Afterwards on the way back into Payson, I drove up to the Diamond Point Fire Tower. I was going to hike in after the gate but it was clearly post closed and no foot traffic.

We went looking for fall colors, and were not disappointed. We took the last open parking spot at the trailhead. Many people were within 200 yards of the trailhead, taking in the fall ambiance. The colors were sporadic during the first mile, with a mix of green, yellow, and orange. The See Spring trail had scattered clusters of maples with vibrant colors. We then returned to the See Canyon Trail, and the colors became more impressive as we ascended. Some areas were fully saturated, with brilliant red, orange, and yellow leaves permeating the trees as well as carpeting the ground. We had to turn around before we reached the top, as we had to return to Phoenix early for other obligations. We definitely were pleased with the abundance of color. The creek was flowing nicely. There were 3 easy creek crossings each way.

There were numerous people (and dogs) along the first mile and throughout the See Spring trail, with occasional trash (including used dog poop bags along the trail). Beyond the intersection of the See Canyon and See Spring trails, we saw only 2 other groups of people.

I wanted to check out the fall foliage on the See Canyon Trail, so I decided to do a clockwise loop hike that basically went up to the Rim on the See Canyon Trail and came down off the rim on the Drew Trail.

Once up on the Rim, we made our way to the Drew Trail via the General Crook Trail and the Carr Lake Trail. After descending the Drew Trail, we made our way back to the trailhead on the Highline Trail.

Leaves were a mixed bag. There was a bit of color around the trailhead and on the See Canyon Trail for a short distance to the first creek crossing. Then almost all the maple leaves were green all the way to See Spring. Color started getting good on the See Canyon Trail about a mile past the See Spring Trail junction, and the maples were really nice from about 6,900 feet to 7,500 feet, or thereabouts.

On the way back on the Highline Trail, there were some nice colors also, but many of the trees along this section of the Highline Trail were past peak.

Synopsis
It was an enjoyable day in the Rim country, even if the foliage at the lower elevations of See Canyon weren't yet ready for prime time.

Route Scout added an extra 1.1 miles to the hike, so the stats above are those that I recorded the other time that I did this hike.
foliage observationfoliage observationfoliage observationfoliage observationfoliage observation
Autumn Foliage Observation Moderate
Foliage varied on the hike. Foliage was "substantial" on the upper part of the See Canyon Trail, but was "isolated" on the lower part of the trail and at See Spring.

Needed something not too long and not too far away, and I hadn't done this loop in awhile, so I decided it would be a good time to revisit it. Got started around 9am. Was already disappointingly warm, and I've been weaning myself off coffee, so I was taking things pretty slow. About a half mile in on Highline there was some bad trail work; someone just left a bunch of clippings right on the trail.

Eventually got to Drew, steady climb to the top, and finally got a bit of a breeze before topping out on the rim. Once on the rim it was more mellow and the temps were nicer, but I still didn't really feel like running once.

5-6 miles in, on General Crook trail (which is well-defined most of the way from the end of Drew Canyon trail to See Canyon trail), I managed to obtain a mild ankle sprain while carelessly stepping over some easy deadfall. I only get injured on the easy stuff. It was painless on flat terrain, so I don't think it slowed me down much above the rim, but coming down See Canyon was a different story. Logged a 30 minute mile on the downhill.

Did the detour up to See Spring (because why not?), then back down to the car. Saw a dog poop back on the trail up to the spring, but didn't see anybody up there. Huh.

Wasn't a terrible day, but could've done without the ankle sprain.

Denny needed a color fix, Joe and I could not say no (with all his crying and sniveling)

We were the first car in the lot at a brisk 28 degrees. We got started early, probably too early, on the Highline headed east. Most of the trees were not yet lit up by the sun.

Denny had noted that about 2 miles in, there was a high concentration of maples. He was not wrong, it was filthy with maples. Another 30-45 minutes would have been perfect to light them up.

The See Spring Trail never disappoints. The center section had the highest concentration of color. By the springs many of the maples had not turned yet.

A short but fruitful hike. Always good to get the stooges back together again.
Thanks for driving Denny.

Denny planned this mini foliage gem. Brisk morning. He said there was a nice pocket of maples about two miles over on the Highline. He knows his maple pockets, a dandy display!

Then up to the spring. Run, don't walk, See Spring Trail is phenomenal now!

Fun morning, loaded with color and banter... I threw a rocket at Bruce, then immediately asked him for a favor. The reaction was priceless. Always good to babble and hike with the turtle too!

I got Bruce and Joe to join me for a “Fall color” hike.
We got to the trailhead around 7:30am and it was a little chilly. We were dressed for it so it wasn’t bad.
We hiked the Highline part of the hike first and the trail is in great shape. Maple color change is hard to predict but there was a pretty good variety.
We finished off with the See Spring trail. More rocky and grassy in the middle but not to bad.
Most of the color was 3/4 up.
A nice Fall outing and really enjoyed getting a hike in with Bruce and Joe!! Like HAZ, they rock!!

See Canyon to See Spring, continued up canyon a bit, then decided to climb directly up towards Carr Lake Loop (this was very stupid, do not do this - last 200 yards was really crappy class 4 with high penalty points), but luckily I recovered from this and wandered around on the rim for awhile, then back to Carr Loop to Carr Trail to Drew to Highline. All numbered trails were in excellent condition. Only saw a pair of hikers and a lone mountain biker. Weather was great.

My first attempt at a hike since my ankle sprain. I didn’t want to push it so my plan was just to hike directly to the spring and not do any extra of the main trail.

The drive in was even colorful so I was excited! It was a Monday so I didn’t expect many people, but there were about 5-7 cars there when I arrived. I wrapped up my ankle and got started.

Immediately I’m distracted by some little side paths and go exploring down there. The water flowing plus the foliage was awesome! I continued back on the trail and headed to the side path to the spring. This is where all the people from the parking lot were. Luckily most were headed out so I got to enjoy it without a crowd. I stopped and took pics a few times before I found a place I could relax.

I set up my hammock next to the creek and just relaxed for a while and elevated my ankle. It was very nice and peaceful! After I had my fill I hiked back out and then meandered across to a patch of trees by the far end of the parking lot. Lots of color but it’s almost past peak. Still very pretty and worth a visit. Apparently even doable with an ankle sprain!

I read on Hike Arizona that See Canyon was looking pretty good for fall leaves, and since we had never hiked it before, I thought "now is the time!" Went up on Saturday with my mom and hiked to See Spring and to FR300 on the rim via the See Canyon Trail.

The Drive: The drive up from Phoenix is quite pleasant, really just feels like a hop skip and a jump and you're there. Going up the 87 is truly beautiful, although the fires last year did devastate much of the 4 Peaks wilderness.

Parking: By 10:00 AM when we arrived, the parking area was mostly full, with just two spaces remaining. After we arrived, several others tried to squeeze in, partially blocking others in or partly blocking the access to the restrooms. :? I'd propose they should have just parked along the road and walked 100 yards.

The Leaves: Of course, everyone was there for the fall leaves. So how were they? In the lower elevations (maybe up to 7200 feet?) they were great! There was a mixture of oak and maple, which created amazing yellow and red colors along the whole spectrum. The area around See Spring was particularly spectacular, and my mom said it was maybe one of her favorite places we've ever been!

The rest of the hike: Besides the leaves, the hike was enjoyable, with See creek and Christopher creek to accompany us most of the way. At the higher elevations, Christopher Creek was often underground, though it went back and forth from flowing to dry. The final 1 miles of the hike was definitely the most strenuous, almost rivaling Piestewa Peak here in Phoenix in terms of steepness. The trail also became more challenging to follow. For novice hikers, keep an eye out for two things: Logs/branches across the trail & rock cairns. Generally, especially in areas where trails are not well-defined, multiple paths might develop. In that case, more experienced hikers will come along and "block off" certain paths that are not the correct trail with branches across the trail. If you ever find yourself stepping over some branches, check again to make sure the trail doesn't take a bend you weren't expecting! The cairns are stacked rocks which identify where the route goes in case it is difficult to distinguish the trail. Hope this helps someone!

Overall, it was a great hike--super beautiful. Will definitely do again.

At higher elevations, the peak would have been last weekend. At lower elevations, the peak was this weekend.

Don't know about this spring particularly, but there was plenty of water flowing in Christopher Creek.

Wanting to see some autumn color, and avoid the business of Sedona, I figured this would be a good one. I had a Friday off too which helped avoid the weekend crowds. Upon arrival at the see canyon trailhead, the color is present immediately. Once turning on the trail to see spring you get back close to the creek and it was colorful leaves all along the creek. I had been up see canyon many years ago, but never on the see spring trail. I wasn't sure where exactly the spring was, or is one really exists back there. the further I got there was no longer a trail to follow, but the grand was pretty packed with leaves. I found one spot where it appeared some water was coming out from some rocks, but there creek also seemed to be split in 3 back there. I did manage 3.7 miles round trip with some wandering around at the end. The fall color was awesome, this was the perfect time of year for this trail.
