Could be the last afternoon hike I get to enjoy this season. Mother Nature's wind was pretty aggressive at times but it kept the temp cool throughout. I didn't see a single hiker until I got around to the NW saddle. It was woman's day as I saw three female hikers and one male dog. I changed it up a bit, hiking in a counterclockwise manner. Second time I've gotten a side ache... not sure why, but it is uncomfortable.

WATCH 4:19-5:40PM, 1450-1694 elevation (gain 615), 137 avg bpm/158 max (54% Zone 5 max, 39% Zone 4 anaerobic, 6% Zone 3 aerobic) burning 578 calories (one Butterfinger Blizzard on my menu after). TEMP 73.3, sunny, 16% humidity, 11.8mph SW wind.

Been really liking this connector trail. Funny looks from the golfers change after they slice into the desert. The best part is exploring down through the brush between the fairways. Decided to stretch it out a bit more with a loop around Lookout. Took a break on some fairway. Fantastic weather, can it stay like this forever?

Just wandering around the Phx Mts Preserve near North Mtn. Started at the Visitor Center and went east along the 100 trail. I hadn't really tried the Lookout Mtn Connector Trail (#25) so followed that for a ways. Turned that into a loop back along the 100 just before reaching Cave Creek Rd.

Couldn't resist stepping off the trail briefly and taking a photo of #16 at the Pointe. If there's a course, I'll probably find it. :-)

Cool and breezy today. Good to get some kind of hike in before it rains (?) tomorrow.

On the way home I was following a Subaru Crosstrek hatchback at 32nd St/Indian School around 11am with a HAZ sticker in the back window. Also had a "Keep Tucson Kind" sticker next to the license plate.

a nice afternoon hike; quite a few people out. Took some of the extra "Ups" along with the circumference today; practicing a little extra AEG. One of those "ups" is pretty rutted even after them putting a lot of rock on it. I put up a photo. On the southeast side I hesitated and then opted for the extra up on this very rock covered trail. Very clear views all around!

WATCH: 3 miles starting with temp of 71.5 and 20% humidity (high point 1740, low 1544) 132 avg bpm (seems high again but maybe the matrix had changed), max 158 (7% at anaerobic, 40% at aerobic, 53% at zone 2 weight control) burning 424 calories finishing at 3:28PM

Great morning to get outside and enjoy a walk. Wanted some extra distance and something that had fewer people and I found it. I have done Lookout connector before, but this time I didn't lose the trail. I took #25 the whole way to the mountain, and then up the mountain, caught #150 and hit the summit. On the way down, I visited the West Summit before heading down the mountain. Rather than go through the golf course again, I took the alternate #25A back to the road then back to the NMVC. I don't think there's a sign for #25A, but I'm sure I was on it. The city website has a map showing both routes. Anyway, great day and good exercise!

I decided to start from North Mountain Park because the lots there have alot of parking spaces. I still almost had trouble parking. There were still a few spaces left, but it was filling up fast.

My plan was to hike up to Lookout Mountain, hike those trails, and head back. Once I got to Lookout Mt., however, I had already done over 5 miles. That was more of a time commitment that I was willing to make this morning to do those trails up there. So I hiked the 25 up and back.

the north and south ends of the 25 are normal trails, the in between park is mostly following golf cart paths. Saw a couple other walkers along the path, but it does clear out once you get there. I saw 2 coyotes along the 25 on my up to Lookout, but they were too far away and too on the move to get any kind of a photo.

On the way back I took the 25A, but it faded away and I wasn't sure which way to go, so I doubled back and got on the 25 again. At the south end of the 25 I started to take one of the unmapped trails to the west around the hill. I ended up summiting the hill and headed down it again onto the 100.

On the way back I took a shortcut on the 101 directly back to the parking lot. Seemed like a little steeper of a climb, but I didn't mind it. Finished up just as it was starting to get a little toasty.

Belated post. Started from the 7th Ave. TH. I thought it was an early morning hike, but apparently not. Got there just after 6am and there were already close to 40 cars there :o . In all my times as using that as a starting point, I have never seen that many cars there! Part of the crowd are remote control car enthusiast. I have seen them there on the weekends several times with small cars tackling the rough terrain in nearby washes. Luckily there are a lot of trails out there so you can chose your own route and avoid some of the crowds. Which is what I did. I kind of threw together my own version of the Lookout Mountain Connector "south side." From the TH I took the Christiansen 100 trail through the 7th st tunnel to where the Lookout Connector starts. Followed this (for a short time really) until it came to the Thunderbird tunnel. In my opinion there is no point going past this point (unless your true goal is to hit Lookout Mountain) as it is almost all golf course and residence after this. Nearly lost an eye at the Thunderbird tunnel when I got distracted by a bevy of rabbits and ran into a low lying branch. After the tunnel (staying on the south side of it). I continued east following some very nice user trails that are worth visiting every once in awhile. On the south side of Thunderbird there is a hill that parellels this stretch of the road and there is basically a low, middle level and ridgeline trail that utilizes this hill. Today, I took the low lying user trail up to where it connects to the mid level trail and used this mid level trail as a turn around point and made my way west on it. All of this is on well established single track trails. The only rough section is a short cling from the low to the mid level trail. This section is rocky and eroded. This mid level trail got me back to the Lookout Connector which I used very briefly to connect back to the Christiansen. After that I used a couple of user trails and part of the Shaw Butte Loop trail to get back to the TH. Even with all the trail options, I still encountered close to 50 hikers, 19 bikers and 3 trail runners :) . Besides the rabbits, there were a few lizards and a couple of snakes, one of which was a rattler. Temps weren't too bad at that time of day....hence the crowds.

Well when I got back to Tonto Jr, RS said 3 miles but when I uploaded it took me to 2.34. Oh well. Windy today on my counter-clockwise hike, not many people out. Tried a different route for part of it by going up a tier and also following a very faint trail for a piece. My right rib cage must have sustained some damage from my fall this weekend; pretty painful altho I try to exercise and hike thru it as nothing can be done. Surprised by it. My inside arms which took brunt of the impact are pretty sore still too. Time will heal all.

Have my route planned in my head for Wednesday's after-work hike too since it's supposed to be below 90. The gym is open but not the classes; they say beginning of June. Since temp is supposed to heat up next week, I may have to go; never been one for treadmills and bikes but I won't have a choice.

Distance/AEG is a guess. Took my new hat out for a stroll after work. And, yes, it's a long report for a short hike but for the second time in a row, I had a little drama and Todd loves drama.

I had to park down the hill but no big deal other than I had to approach my selected route from a different angle. It was nice to have to walk up the hills as once again, I fear my already lack of elevation prowess is very rusty. It was going to be a very busy trail today. The Brittlebush was brilliant and it appears our baby Brittlebush have all blossomed even if they’re a little smaller in stature. The hillsides were bathed in golden yellow, so pretty.

I wrapped around the east side of the mountain and decided to head down to hook up with Joe’s new hike guide, the Lookout Connector. I only took a small piece of it before rejoining the main trail. Continued to encounter hikers about every five minutes and Route Scout proceeded to act up for most of the rest of the trip. Of course, I had the radio going and was using the camera so I fear it was just too much for Kemosabe.

I worked my way around the south side continuing to be exposed to the brilliant Brittlebush. It was truly stunning; I think mostly because the light was slightly filtered with the light clouds dancing around in the sky. I also noticed that I could see that side hill trail that goes up Shaw Butte; have never noticed that before.
I made my way around the western humps and met a new young dog and her owner. I visited with them for a moment. I think the young dog thot I was a bear despite my assurances  . As I rounded the north end, I encountered a couple with a man holding a baby in front of him freestyle.

Today instead of heading back to the TH I decided to hike the east side of the western humps as it has a nice little incline. This is when Kemosabe totally gave up the ghost so I was on my own, no Route Scout, no pictures. There were a couple fellas climbing/belaying the middle hump of Lookout. I could hear them clearly as I made my way to the Summit Trail which I had decided to climb to the Saddle.

Along the summit trail I encountered some female hikers that were going up an area that had little rock barriers across and I tried to educate them nicely that the rocks were there to keep them from using those old use trails. She was a bit snotty about it and asked if I was a ranger and how long had I been hiking there. I tried to politely explain and then continued on my way to the saddle.

The trail was busy coming and going. Once back down to the areas where the rock barriers were disintegrating, I decided I would try to build them up. I had time to kill as I had gotten an early start. So I spent an hour on it  . During that time one couple proceeded to step over one of the barriers I had just finished and I told him not to do that and why. At the time I was trying to move a big rock in another section and the female came over and offered to help as she thot the three of us could move it but it was just too heavy.

A few other couples went by and thanked me and mentioned the other hikers that just don’t understand or don’t care about where they hike. But then that first gal came by and ridiculed me and told me she would speak to the ranger and the ranger would tell me I didn’t need to re-build those rock barriers. That’s the second mom in the last two times that I’ve been up there that’s been so rude.

Every time I would think I was done I would see another area that needed work and then I stood there for a few minutes to see how the hikers treated it. One guy just stepped right over the barriers and had no clue as did another hiker. I fear that was an hour wasted ](*,) . Part of the problem is with the flora that is so tall it kind of covers being able to see where that nice large curve is in the trail.

However, I am going to send an email to the Preserve caretakers and suggest they put some little signs up or they’re never going to get those areas refurbished; especially now. The areas they have put the little rock barriers are pretty steep and the trail is now a nice switchback that people can’t seem to stay on and it’s only a couple feet from these short three steep and narrow sections. I should have taken a picture. Oh well.

I had planned only a little over an hour on the trail and ended being there for over two. People were still coming in droves and it was around 5:15. Very scary to me! I understand, but still scary. I wonder if we can get Seniors hiking hours like they do in the grocery stores :)

I hiked Trail #25 Lookout Mountain Connector in its entirety today! I've hiked Lookout for years and have known about this connector trail but have never done it. It's been here a long time, but probably doesn't see much traffic. In its entirety anyways. I'm guessing it was built to serve Pointe Resort guests a walking path to the mountain. Since then, golf courses and homes have been built. The trail can be hard to find in some places, so just stick to the cart path on the course. This is a nice trail, though, not too difficult, just a little route-finding is all. This is a good trail if you want to hike Lookout Mountain and add some distance to your hike! :)

For anyone that likes good Chicago pizza, go to Spinatos on 7th Street, however don't go there the night before you go out for a long run or hike. The pizza was pretty tasty last night with a couple of beer's from Flagstaff's Mother Road Brewery. But it made for an uncomfortable run this morning, took almost an hour before I felt halfway decent. Left from the trailhead on 7th Avenue and headed down to the lower dam and up the Central Avenue climb to skirt the midsection of North Mountain. Then circled back around to catch Trail 100, took that over to Trail 101 up to the social trail along 7th Street and caught Trail 100 just before the tunnel. There is a sign on Trail 101 stating that the main trail on the east side of North Mountain is closed for construction.

Headed under the tunnel at 7th Street and kept going to Cave Creek, the new trail work along 100 is quite apparent. The section from the top of the saddle down to Cave Creek is the smoothest I've ever seen in the 15+ years I've been hiking or running that trail. What used to be a short technical section is now an easy jaunt. Headed up to the Golf Course Loop over to Trail 25, back to 100 to 306 and back to my car with a few little extra loops and zig zags to hit the two hour mark.

Just bought an Osprey Duro 1.5 liter running vest and it's quickly turning into one of my favorite packs. Little bit heavier than my Nathan vest, but it doesn't bounce around as much and fits a lot better. Could be a contender for my next pack to do a Grand Canyon run/hike.

It seemed like a good idea at the time, go for a pre-dawn run before I had to work this morning. Hit Trail 100 from the 7th Avenue trailhead at 5:30 AM and thought it's been awhile since I've run with my headlamp, a nice change of pace. Cruised up Trail 100 up to 101 and then cut back over to 100 from there. Went through the tunnel under 7th Street and continued on 100 to the tunnel on Cave Creek. Turned around there and headed up the Tapatio Loop. While at the point where I was the furthest from my car I was zoning out and thinking how cool it is to still be running in the dark. So of course a rock jumped up out of nowhere and splayed me out. Got up, dusted myself up and assessed the damage.

Looking down, one hand felt like it was broken and the other hand was profusely bleeding. But I still had over 4 miles to cover to get back to my car. Wrapped one hand in a bandana and grit my teeth for the run back to my car. Headed home and immediately started icing my hand, luckily not broken just really sprained. Upshot is that I figured out a way to get out of doing dishes for the next few days.

A little LSD run to get the weekend started, 90 minutes seems to be the perfect amount of time. Long enough to cover a fair amount of ground, yet not so much that I spend the rest of the day recovering on the couch. One of the many reasons to live in Phoenix were days like this, 55 degrees & sunny with just a hint of a breeze to start the run. By the time I was finished it was about 70 degrees.

Started at the visitors center parking lot to the tunnel at Cave Creek, went north along Thunderbird which is quickly becoming one of my favorite stretches of trails in the North Mountain area. Went back to the visitors center and hopped on the bandit trail to #101, then back to #100 over to #306 to make essentially a big figure 8 loop. Still had 15 minutes left to run, so finished up with another out and back on the bandit trail along 7th Street.

This week has been a week of odd sighting on the trail. On Thursday saw someone riding an ATV in the park and this weekend had my first encounter with one of those new "E-Bikes". These are mountain bikes with a small electric motor that is supposed to "assist" on uphill sections of trail. However this bike was being ridden by a rather corpulent fellow who wasn't peddling at all and using the motor to guide him around the trail. I'm not sure that I like this new type of bike.

Took a self imposed rest week and this was my first trail run in almost 10 days. Looking for something without a huge amount of gain to loosen my legs a bit and shake off the cobwebs. Started off at the North Mountain Visitor's Center and took Trail #100 over to Cave Creek, then veered north to hook up with Kingsnake's loop. Have to sheepishly admit that because I run and hike with blinders on, sometimes I miss things. It took a hike with my wife earlier this year to find this trail. We were hiking on Trail #100 and she asked if this was another trail in-between a break in the vegetation and if so, where did it lead? So took that trail and discovered this extra trail that's never crowded and makes a nice loop back to 7th Street.

Made it back to 7th Street and still needed to get in another 15 minutes, so took the bandit trail along 7th Street down to the #101 connecter back to #100, then circled back to my car. Trails are crowded this morning, looks like fall/winter hiking season has started.

Hot, muggy and miserable morning for a trail run. High humidity combined with not even the hint of a breeze made this by far the worst run of the summer. Set out to do 90 or so minutes and cut it short. Usually weigh myself before a run to see how much water I need to drink once I'm done, I lost almost one pound per mile this morning it was so humid.

Took Trail #100 from the visitors center under the tunnel and over to Cave Creek. Kept going and turned around at the first big hill near the power line (AKA "Jason's Pole" - Jason Cleghorn's turn around point when he first moved to town and this was his trail of choice). Zipped back across Cave Creek and hooked up with Kingsnake's Golf Course loop and did the northern portion of it along Thunderbird. From there worked my way back to the visitors center.

The summer rains have taken their toll on portions of this trail, some of the trail has been reduced to a small gulley filled with loose rocks.
