Ended up with 9 of us using Meetup. Everyone showed up from the list. Horrible traffic delays heading N in PHX. Substantial set back on time. Could have driven to an off pavement spot in Flag in that amount of time!

We did keep a strong pace on the lollipop loop starting from Lil Granite. Occasional views, few people and great weather. Several of us went out for an early dinner afterward.

Was not zapped of energy after this one. Will pry crank it up some next week. 👆

@prescottstyle & I started hiking from the Metate Trailhead, near Granite Basin Lake, at 8:25 a.m. It was a bit confusing at the start, as we first started down a wash marked with blue ribbons, and marked on the topo as “FR 374C”. Then we went past a row of boulders, starting up Granite Mountain Trail #261. Then I spotted the Clark Spring Trail #40 sign, on the right side of the trail, rather than on the left where the trail actually goes. Eh. Only lost a few minutes. No big. 🧭

Clark Spring Trail #40 climbs 700 ft. in the next two miles. The first mile has spot shade, but is mostly exposed. The next ¾ of a mile, switchbacks through shadey pine, oak and juniper. Two of the juniper — one living, one dead — are massive. (Though not as large as the Granite Mountain Hotshots juniper.) The final ¼ mile to the Granite Mountain Wilderness boundary gate is exposed, as is the rest of the climb to the summit of Little Granite Mountain.

The Clark Spring Trail #40 switchbacks do not do much to slow down mountain bikes bombing down the trail, so keep your head up, and your ears open. Besides two MTBs, we also encountered a couple and their pair of friendly dogs. We chatted with them for a few minutes, and it turned out they were the folks who maintained Trail #40, which they said had been rough and overgrown just a few months ago. Now, the trail is in great shape! 👏

At the wilderness boundary gate, Paul realized one of the bolts was falling out of the trail sign. The washer and nut were still in the back of the sign, so I screwed them back on as tight as I could, squeezing my fat fingertips into the small hole.

We turned north on Little Granite Mountain Trail #37.

From the gate, Little Granite Mountain Trail #37 climbs 100 ft. in a ¼ mile to the top of a spur. If you continue on Trail #37, it descends 700 ft. in 1½ miles to Upper Pasture Trail #38. Instead, at the spur, turn right, off trail up the spur. In 100 yds. is a barb wire fence. I suppose we could have stayed on the east side of the boundary gate, and followed the fence up, but Paul & I did not.

We arrived at the fence just after 10:00 a.m. It was already quite toasty. Paul had been under the impression we were doing the Little Granite Mountain Loop again, not a summit. Combined with the temperature being higher than expected, he was low on water. Rather than cause a heat injury, I suggested we bail. 🥵

On the way back down, heavy clouds started coming in. The two rain drops I felt were no relief from the heat. It was already 90℉, heading for 95 at 3:00 p.m., when Paul & I got back to the Metate Trailhead at noon. Rehydration commenced soon thereafter at La Casa Prescottstyle. 🍻

We always end up doing Granite Mountain, but today, we decided on Little Granite Mountain Loop. 27 degrees at 7am at the trailhead. Parking lot was 95% full, what's up with that. None of those cars would still be there upon our return. Did the loop clockwise, thinking we'd get in the sun sooner, which ended up the wrong way to find the sun. Lots of climbing early on helped to warm us up. Lots of purple poop on the trail, and trees, and leaves on the ground. Cool section on the backside with big pieces of quartz laying all over the trail. Fun times wandering through the dells before connecting up with Granite Mountain trail. Fantastic lunch at Blue Hills Cafe afterwards!

Splendid hike. I chose to do this in a CCW direction. It was a tad warm at the SW corner of the loop, a 500 foot ascent to a saddle before dropping down and returning to the trailhead. That ascent required a break on an otherwise easy and enjoyable hike. The trails are in excellent condition.

Since I can't seem to do the big hikes anymore, I'm staying in Prescott for two more days so I can get a couple more "little" hikes in. I also wanted some monsoon action; I have not been disappointed. We had a deluge of rain with a nice show of lightning.

Fun day.

Did an out and back on the Clark Springs Trail part of this loop. There was a reroute near the top which added a few switchbacks between the Clark Springs area and the junction with the Little Granite Mountain Trail. I posted an unofficial track for this on the Little Granite Mountain Loop webpage with my original track. The new trail is easy to follow so no track is necessary.

The hike itself was great; clear and sunny with moderate temperatures.

I took a friend on a nice, leisurely hike today. The temps were pleasant and the views nice. We found just enough water for Lily to cool her paws and get a cold drink whenever the clouds would disappear and let the sun out. We stopped for smoothies at Rebek's on the way home. It was a diamond day.

Good hike but the summit was way tougher than I remembered. It could have been the "alternate" route we took up :D We were all pretty ready to be down from there quickly. I couldn't believe the summit was already swarming with ladybugs-- seems early. Lily did really well-- though I wouldn't recommend taking dogs up to the true summit. She loves that kind of climbing but had to find a couple work-arounds on the way down (she never needed to be picked up lowered). Even though she's done more mileage and almost double that aeg in a day-- I would consider this the most challenging hike she's done. It was my first time doing the Little Granite Mtn Loop and that was really enjoyable :D

We headed back out to Granite Mountain in Prescott. Kyle and I hiked to the peak a few years ago and decided to return. This time we started with the Little Granite Mountain Loop. We made quick time as we traversed around this side peak. We took a break before we started the hike up the Granite Mountain Trail. We made steady progress as we hiked up the trail. Once up top we opted to head directly for the peak skipping the viewpoint. The going was relatively easy for the first half mile. There were some sporadic cairns that helped but you can’t rely on them and I referred to Route Scout to keep us on track. The climb to the summit went well as we fought our way up. The entire off trail portion of this hike is burned out. I had lots of ash on my hands and clothes.

We topped out and signed the register and took our lunch. The summit is covered in Ladybugs. You had to be careful where you stepped because there were clusters of hundreds of them. After our break we made our return which went really well. We descended from the peak and Lily, Kyle’s dog, did great although I don’t recommend taking dogs to the summit. Once back on trail we flew down and were back to the car around mid-afternoon. It was a nice day in Prescott.

I'm glad I had the chance to hike and get this mountain. The lower trails were a breeze and we easily made good time which came to a screeching halt as we entered the higher trails and the summit came into view. Awesome views at the top, but also lots of lady bugs hanging out which is fine, however I was grossed out because I didn't want to crush any of them and at some spots it was difficult. The bushwhacking to the summit was tougher than I anticipated but we still made really good time and were back at the car in the early afternoon. The trails were also fairly empty which was a surprise.

A great Sunday hike with some amazing views, wildlife and wildflowers. The weather and rain was just right. I wish I would have packed my fishing pole I might have stayed a little longer. I see on satellite there is large ruin at the top of Little Granite Mnt, we speculated the whole way on the route to the top. Probably make it out here again to see what other adventures this wilderness holds.

Big counter-clockwise loop all the way around Granite Mountain Wilderness starting/ending at the Williamson Valley trailhead, with a side trip up Granite Mountain. Nice to have flowing water in many of the drainages.

Very pleasant and diverse loop. Some ice still covering the Clark Spring portion but presented no issues. No steep portions and more knee friendly than Granite Mt Trail. Aggressive bull guarding the trail on the Little Granite portion. It would not move and appeared agitated so I made my way around it.

Being new to the area, but having hiked the Ozark Mountains back in the Midwest, a casual photo trip into the Carr Canyon turned into a modest hike up Clark Spring Trail #124. The trail could have been traversed most of the way by vehicle, but started out very rutted and the idea was to take nature shots...not easily done from a vehicle.

We parked on the first serious switchback of Carr Canyon road, just a click or so past the falls. There is where I found the trail head. A rather easy hike, but these elevations wore fast on me, and our hike was limited by available water.

Hiking is one thing...picture taking makes it a whole different experience! Very casual, often motionless, waiting for the right light on a subject, this was more of a photographic excursion than a hike.

The scenery, which is all new to me, was pleasantly breath-taking! The remaining evidence of a past fire provided some interesting contrast to the vistas. The morning clouds were at a low ceiling, capping the southern rim of Carr Canyon, and the breaking scattered shadows along the valley floor resembling fire-ravaged areas. All too awesome!

There were a half-dozen species along the trail, from tiny orchid-style flowers to one huge single bloom of what was reported as poisonous. My knowledge of names is growing, be patient.
