| partners | | On the way back from the Rim to Rim hike we were looking for a short hike just to stretch the legs and get some fresh air. Doing a quick check on Route Manager noticed this short route into Crater Lake that looked like the perfect amount of effort. We arrived short of the track start to find it blocked…looks like maybe the forest service has dug up the road to keep people from driving it. But it only added ¼ mile to the track so not an issue.
Once past the road obstacle we continued up the old road section to the crater entrance. There is a fence to pass through and then down into the crater. We hiked down and around the small pond partway before stopping to sit for a beverage. After the break hiked back to the gate but instead of going back down we did another loop this time around the rim of the crater. The hike around the rim is easy off trail with great views the whole way of Kendrick on one side and Humphreys on the other and is well worth the time. Then headed back down to finish off the short hike. |

| no partners | | Even after the deluge of rain on Friday afternoon and the all-night rain of Saturday, the 'lake' was barely a bog. BUT - it was still a wonderful saunter. We were rewarded for hiking in the rain by seeing a couple of small elk herds moving through the forest on the downhill side of the trail on the way up.
Roads in the area were, as you could imagine, a mud quagmire. It was fun to watch some hardcore mountain bikers making their way through the slop on ever-increasing-diameter tires. |

| | | Another wonderful weekend with wonderful people in a wonderful place...wonderful!
Really though, it was a pleasure meeting so many new HAZzers and reuniting with old friends as well.
I was a little disappointed with the campfire situation this time around but...nonot can't be expected to create perfection every time...especially when Uncle Chums didn't provide him with NEARLY enough deadfall...oh well, maybe next year.
I was very pleased with how ridiculously clean our massive campsite was after our departure, great job everyone and thank you!! |

| no partners | | I did this short hike back in May, my first before moving to Flagstaff. Its a nice short hike with a decent climb at the end dropping you down onto crater lake. At that time it was quite empty, Im not sure if thats typical or not but it was. Temp was 35 degrees up there and somehow the frogs were still croaking.
Be carefull of the many offshoots that lead off the main road/trail. |

| no partners | | Nice easy hike with some great views and very interesting crater to explore. Access road was passable in our Subaru, but a low-slung car would have difficulty. |
