Working on finishing some of the trails of the Sonoran Preserve N. This time I went west. There is a small parking area at the far west end of the Sonoran Preserve, which interestingly, after the turnoff for Apache Wash TH, when traveling east on the Sonoran Parkway, turns into East and then West Dove Valley Road.

After a short walk on the Paseo West I got on the Ocotillo Trail. It's a pleasant trail as you meander your way west and north all the way to above Carefree Highway. The brittlebush all looks very healthy. I would encounter mostly bikers initially and very few hikers until I got over on the north side. It's always fun trying out new trail not knowing specifically what you might see along the way. Tramonto Peaks are across the highway. You can also see the beige colored water tank as it's rather large. The communications tower is to your north and east as you continue on the Ocotillo Trail.

As you come around the far north corner of the Ocotillo Trail you start to see the north country (New River Mesa and Mountains) and then heading east Cave Creek Recreational Area, Spur Cross, Black Mountain and Skull Mesa. You can hear the traffic noise but not bad. As you head east, of course, it was a clear day and I could see the Mazzies and Four Peaks. Eventually I could see the trailhead called Desert Hills (Carefree Highway west of 7th Ave) and as I arrived, I discovered it's a pretty nice place too. There are restrooms and ample parking. A far cry from when we started our hike back in 2014 with Karl and Kathy, this TH was just dirt https://hikearizona.com/x.php?I=4&ZTN=17606&UID=11058

The trail names change here. You head east from this Trailhead on the Sidewinder Trail before heading SW toward a saddle. There is a paved road to the Communications tower that looks quite steep. I would later find where you can catch it from the other side just above the Sidewinder Trail. Anyway, I headed toward the saddle. It looks like some sort of trail spurs SW from here down the other side. And it looks like there might be the option to climb a peak to the NW. To the east it looks like there is an old trail that is blocked off and then the Sidewinder continues east. Maybe they changed the layout to accommodate the bikes or it was the old way to get to the tower.

The trail tread is still very nice as you skirt around the southside of the tower and get directly below it. As you come to the saddle on the east side you come to an off trail intersection so I went up and checked it out. That's when I saw the last of the paved road to the tower; maybe it's hiked like North Mountain where people come up for a workout, though this is not nearly as long. There is also an option to climb up a double peak which I checked out but the trail petered out too fast. I thot I would save that off trail for another time.

I had encountered more hikers and bikers here and would do so off and on for the rest of the hike but not too bad. The views have really been nice the whole way too as it wasn't very hazy at all. Once I got back to the ground floor, I hooked back up with the Ocotillo Trail (the second option heading east on the Sidewinder). I started noticing how green the ground was. I guess I should look closer to see if the groundcover is friend or foe but I suspect foe.

I've been on this section before but took a few pictures thinking of the song, "the green green grass of home"; perhaps because we had met these two young men from Wales at the Airport Mesa Scenic Viewpoint the day before. And when I think of Wales, I think TOM JONES😻. I continued going up and out of little washes east until it was time to get on the Paseo West.

Once on the Paseo West it was smooth sailing. This is quite the sidewalk... not a crack the whole way and I only saw two replacement panels. BUT what was absolutely incredible and had to cost a bundle were the TEN bridges going over the little washes. I'm glad I took a picture of each one or I would have lost count. I was only doing the last two miles of this stretch as it starts at the Apache Wash TH. And not only that, there at least a dozen fence like structures above drainages to control the water I assume. AND, there were two large fancy shade structures. As nice as that all is, it had to cost a fortune and for the amount of use that it gets, I really wonder why so much money was spent. I did finally find this link for some info: https://www.phoenix.gov/streets/project ... -boulevard

I was getting some backlighting so I tried to grab some pics of the cholla. This part of the Paseo Walkway isn't quite as noisy as it is away from the road. Of course, "walk and gawk" was very enjoyable when you don't have to worry at all about your footing. I eventually got back to below where I had hiked earlier with the Communications tower closer in view. It took a little longer to finish the section cuz I did have to take ten pictures of bridges and about the same of the other structures along the way.

I took Tonto 3 and went back to the Apache Wash TH to enjoy my Huckleberry Beer. There were still quite a few people here. And even though it was an easy 8 mile plus hike, I did have trouble getting up my stairs cuz of my right hip and leg. Frustrating, but the pain passes. I only have pain when going up.

WATCH: 8.56 mile (high point 2079, low point 1704) avg bpm 134, max 160 (4% Zone 4 anaerobic 57% Zone 3 aerobic, 43% Zone 2 weight control) burning 1153 calories. Starting temp 60.7 (JUST RIGHT!) and 9% humidity finishing at 4:59PM.

After work hike. This "trail description" is nice in that it kind of acts as a catch all for this trail system without requiring me to do any trail completely. I got to the Apache Wash TH around 5pm. Wanted to do a loop incorporating the Sindwinder and Ocotillo trails. These two trail intersect near the midway point of their respective routes and I had always been curious about the distance for this short loop. Went in on the Apache Wash as it is a little more direct than the Sidewinder. About .75 miles in the Apache had junctured with the he Sidewinder and I was on the Sidewinder taking it west. First time hiking the Sidewinder in this direction. There was a minor hill (nice for jogging) that precedes the Ridgeback juncture and then there was a more challenging ascent that gets (I think) the highest elevation for this system. The approach from this side (east) isn't that bad though. It is prolonged, interacts nicely with the contours of the mountain and offers some of the better views of the surrounding areas. About 4.25 miles in the Sidewinder connected to the Ocotillo which I took back to the TH. The Ocotillo is much more direct and the elevation change was some minor ups and downs of washes and the slopes coming off the mountains. The weather was a tease....this was day of the big storm and there were some beautiful dark clouds to the north and east. Unfortunately, the sun was to the west. So the entire time I am out there (except for the last few minutes) I have an intermittent breeze and the sun beating down on me. No wildlife. Encountered 3 hikers and 5 bikers near the end of the hike.

Finally able to block out a little hiking time I headed for the desert vista Trailhead this morning. I arrived at about 7:30 under mostly cloudy skies. The parking lot was about three quarters full. I had already mapped out my route:Hawks Nest to Dixie Mt to Valley Verde to Desert Tortoise back to Hawks Nest. I already noticed the abundance of the small purple flowers on my way up. I was finally able to get a shot of the owl in their nest,
I was so thrilled at that. Once I turned onto the Dixie Mountain trail I was greeted with a wonderful display of poppies. It was awesome! As I went along I discovered that it was a great year for lupines also. I met up with the Valley Verde trail and found it to be a nice section to traverse. I passed a few more areas of poppies along the way. The sky was starting to clear up once I turned onto the Desert Tortoise trail. Further along the DT trail I came upon a great scene right where some houses are. One hillside covered in yellow while sloping away from the trail a large swath of purple. The trails were getting busier by this time as borne out by the full parking lot upon my return. It was a great hike with the best floral display that I've seen in a long time.

Wasn't planning on hiking today because of work. But a nice pilot offered to fly in my place. We slept in to recover from last night's festivities and then headed over to the Sonoran Preserve since I hadn't had time to plan anything better. Figured it would be crowded. That was definitely correct. Kids, dogs, bikes, and lot's of folks all enjoying a very nice day. Even with the crowded trails, the hike was much much better than the crowded airports. Definitely a good start to what I hope will be a fun year on the trails.

I started at the end of the Esplanade Trail in the Sonoran Preserve. I hiked SW then NW to the Northern most point of the Apache Wash loop. I then headed NE to meet up with the end of the Flume trail in Cave Creak Regional Park. I continued North to the boarder of the Cave Creek Park. I then went SW to loop around to the Apache Wash loop, then back to my truck.
Most of this was on some kind of trail. Maybe 1.5 miles was off trail or in a wash. I did stop and talk to some bikers, who where having tire problems. Overall a nice humid day, and a decent hike.

Using this generic trail designation because I goofed. I wanted to do a trail that I hadn't done this year and for some reason I thought I hadn't done the Badger Brawl. About 3 miles into my run I realized that the Badger wasn't going to split and that the trail I was on I had done a few months prior. So I bailed when I came to a connector trail to the Cliff Walker Trail. I hit the Cliff Walker and went north a short ways but realized that this was more than I wanted to do without water. So I turned around and took the Cliff back to where it connects to the Badger and the Badger back to Apache Wash. Not exactly what I envisioned, but I got a good run. Had some people picnicking at the TH but didn't seen anyone on the trails. Weather was decent. A little windy and no humidity. Minimal wildlife...chipmunks and lizards.

Brian “Mt98dew” gave me the idea of hiking the wash in between Cave Creek Park and the Northern Sonoran Preserve as a connecter trail. I used that Idea and went a little crazy.

I parked right off Carefree Highway and the Cave Creek Wash. It was the same location Wade “AZ Wondering Bear” used on a March hike, earlier this year.

5.5 Miles. The first section of this hike was to finish parts of the Esplanade Trail and the Cliff Walk Trail in the Sonoran Preserve.
7.75 Miles. These two miles where following well used trail to connect both parks. The trail was very easy to follow. I avoided a couple No Trespassing signs.
8.75 Miles. This mile was hiking the Cave Creek Wash to connect to the slate trail. It was easy going. Some of this was on trail and some was off trail.
11.4 Miles. This portion was hiking back to the truck. Picking up trails whenever available.
Real easy hike. Weather was perfect. Mostly cloudy with a little bit of rain from time to time.

I had planned on doing this next section at a future date. With the weather being as nice as it gets for June, I decided to add this section to todays hike. This hike was designed to connect the Sonoran Preserve south of Carefree Highway to the two trails north of the Highway. One portion will connect to end of the Tramonto Trail, and the other is to meet up with the Tramonto Peak trail 2225 and continue to the higher peak to the East. I had noticed this un-named trail on an earlier hike when I was on the Tramonto Peak Trail.

1.25 Miles. This section was easy going. I met up with the Tramonto trail then headed north.
2.6 Miles. This part of the hike was rough. The sun was breaking through the clouds. 1200 AEG in a short distance. Oh and the humidity was high! I had to take a lot of breaks. For the final accent, I waited a few minutes for the clouds to return. There was a nice breeze from time to time to help cool me down.
2.9 Miles. This portion was hiking to the eastern ridge and back to the higher peak. There was a little rock scrambling, but nothing to tough. On the way back, I notice and American flag. The flag had a burn hole. I lifted the flag, and there was a cigarette under it. Hummm........
5.00 Miles. Hiking back to the truck.

I took the pups on a morning hike. We started at 7th ave on the Sidewinder trail, and looped back on the Ocotillo trail. We also added some of the small connector trails.

Inaugural trip on my new Fuji mountain bike, me bum feels a bit battered :stretch: Suppose I'll need to invest in some padded panties  I think the bike will be a nice way of changing things up, so I don't get as burned out and as easily.

1st trip
After yesterday's rain I figured the Sonoran Preserve North trails would be the most colorful they will be this Spring. So MJ and I ambitiously set out to put footprints on all of them.

Began at the Carefree TH and took the Sidewinder east. This one goes up and down and up and down. The temps were cool and the sly was clear with just some whispy pillows over the northern high country. We conversed a great deal about our upcoming Grand Canyon raft trip. MJ is obsessed with what to pack (limited to 25 pounds, not counting consumables like alcohol thank God). I'm just obsessed with having nearly a month off and not having to go to the airport or shave. WOO HOO! Anyway, back to the hike. Not a lot of people on the trail so that was nice.

Cut south on the Ridgeback Trail over the summit to join the Ocotillo and head east again to the new TH. Had some refreshments and used the facilities. An elderly group was having a little lunch close by, but didn't have a bottle opener. Saved their day with my handy multi-tool that goes everywhere with me. Its nice to come to the rescue of a beer unlawfully entrapped inside a bottle.

After our little rest we headed north on the Sidewinder and then up the little spur to the easternmost hilltop summit. Then the Skunk Wash trail took us back south to the Ocotillo which was aptly named today. The ocotillo are in max bloom right now. There were some really large nice ones along the trail.

Footsore, we finally made it back to the trailhead and the Jeep for the very short ride home. Great day to be out.

1st trip
couldn't decide what I wanted to do this weekend. First I was gonna hike on Saturday and then decided Sunday would work out better with my workout schedule. Then it was a matter of what to do on Sunday afternoon as I do like spending mornings at home on the weekend when I can... which isn't often. I toyed around with the usual suspects of the Phx Preserve or Shaw Butte but then saw Barrett's trip report from the N Phx Preserve so decided that would be my choice.

I posted it up on the HAZ Calendar and FB after figuring out a 10 1/2 mile route :wrt: from Carefree Hwy and 7th Ave. I couldn't see where anyone else had come from there so I had to rough out the mileage and such (forgot to take a pic of the route I had scribbled on a piece of paper; I'll add that later).
Got some interest on FB but only Karl and Kathy could make it. I was surprised Karl wanted to hike again after not getting home til after midnite and after a 27 mile mostly off trail hike. I knew it would be a little warm but it's time to acclimate a bit. We did have some broken clouds and a breeze for most of the hike.

The trail was what I expected, a highway in many cases, but sometimes that's a refreshing change. It gives you a chance to talk with someone side by side rather than ahead or behind. We started on the S (Sidewinder Trail) and for the first little bit Karl walked at my pace. He seemed a bit wobbly but before you knew it, he was blazing the highway ahead of us and Kathy and I were left behind to catch up on things. A couple times Karl stopped in shade to wait for us. I say a couple times because that's about all the shade you'll get out there.

The ocotillo and hedgehogs and creosote were all blooming. The cane cholla had just started. This ended up being a pretty good hike at that as you do get some elevation; much more than I thot  . Off to the North are some houses including a double-wide that Karl thot was in the perfect location. We hit the junction with the R (Ridgeback Trail) where we conferred for a moment in the shade of a tree as my mileage wasn't matching up exactly. We finally made it to the Ridgeback Overlook and the views really are quite nice. Kathy did her normal pic for FB and as usual, it's already on FB before I get home  . That woman is fast with her phone :gun: .

And then it was time to head back where you eventually hit the O (Ocotillo Trail - appropriately named). Unfortunately we had less of a breeze. However, the scenery and conversation were nice so that made up for it. This part of the route paralells the 303 and alongside it is a wide sidewalk and 4 beautiful bridges plus a veranda. We did run into several people on bikes but not too bad as it was Sunday afternoon. I think the secret to hiking in these easy trail areas is to hike on Sunday afternoons.

And then we came to the last intersection with the Sidewinder and we looked up at where we would be hiking. We had briefly discussed staying on the Ocotillo but since Karl was heading up the Sidewinder; we presumed the decision was made  so UP we went... another "Karl's Hill" situation for me like when we did 5057 and didn't have to do the hill but did.

We encountered a couple different hikers that before you knew it had already turned around. We couldn't quite figure that out. The entire hike I kept expecting Karl to drop but then concluded he probably hikes in his sleep ;) . It was a good afternoon out on the trail with good people and good weather. What more can one ask for?

Ocotillo and Hedgehogs were blooming along with some cane cholla. There were limited patches of poppies. Looks like the hedgehog and cane chollas will continue to bloom for awhile.

Couldn't ask for a better day. Hit the snooze button three or four times, had a beautiful hike, and back home just in time for the NFL playoffs to start. 8)

Tons of people out enjoying the warm holiday weekend... 15-20 hikers and 30-40 mountain bikers.

Also nice to see a Phoenix Police officer watching over things in the trailhead parking lot. And yes, a real live cop, not just one of their cars parked in the lot. Glad to see they're keeping an eye on things up here.

First time in the northern part of the preserve... the City of Phoenix really did a great job with the Apache Wash trailhead!

Pretty busy for a Monday. Saw maybe a dozen hikers and five mountain bikes. The spectacular weather probably had something to do with it.

Decided to try out the northern part of the Sonoran Preserve today. Did a counter-clockwise loop through the first part of the Sidewinder Trail, up to the Apache Vista, down the Ridgeback Trail to the Ridgeback Overlook, then the Ocotillo Trail back to the trailhead.

There were lots of people in the park today, but the crowd really thinned out once we passed Apache Vista. Once we were on the Ridgeback Trail, we saw almost no one. Bit of a hazy day out, but the view from the Ridgeback Overlook was probably the best I've experienced in either side of the Preserve so far.

Another nice day at the Sonoran Preserve. Next time I'm here I'll have to go further down the Sidewinder Trail and make a longer loop out of it.
