Started from the lot across from the Phoenix Zoo entrance and did a clockwise loop on the singletrack trail that parallels the Papago Park Walking Path. Did a spur on the Papago Buttes trails and rode down the amphitheater steps, which was pretty sketchy on the full rigid bike. Worked my way south on Vigilante trail and crossed Galvin Parkway on a path that heads over to Hole in the Rock where I found crowds of visitors. Went south from the Hole along the Crosscut Canal trails crossing over Marigold Lane and under Curry Lane. Last time I was in the area between Curry Lane and the 202 in was full of trash and homeless people. Not any more. While the trash has been cleared out of this area, it still feels like a dystopian super fund with trails going in all directions like a heap of spaghetti hanging from a fork. Found my way over to North Mill Ave and crossed under the 202. Followed the Tempe Town Lake shoreline west to the pedestrian bridge, crossed to southern side, then took the Rio Salado Bike Path to Scottsdale Road and crossed back over to the north. Worked my way back to the van mostly using trails paralleling the way I had came in. Interesting mix of fun trails, hard trails, bike paths, crowds, and solitude. Merry Christmas Eve! |
