Needed something short and sweet, and decided it would be a good opportunity to finally hike up the north side of Green's Peak. Located the TH and started walking; aspens were still vibrant at the bottom and there were a few patches of snow left over from last weekend. Parts of the ascent were steep, but it was pretty the whole way. The aspens on the actual mountain are all bare at this point.

At the top, headed towards the southernmost tower for a better view, where some people in a Jeep offered me a beer. Should've been way colder than it was this time of year.

Took Candy Mtn trail down, which was a lot of fun, basically a chute. The Jeep guy at the summit told me these trails were built by motorcyclists, which makes sense considering how steep they are. That descent was so fun that I was tempted to go back up and do it again.

Past peak here. Still a few fiery aspens at the very bottom, but it's bare by the top. The view looking south from the summit featured some nice colors.

Went up the road and then down the backside. Saw one hiker. 2 blue grouse and 1 horned lizard. Stats from RS. Distance seemed high.

Pinetop AZ and Area - April 2015

197 miles, 3hrs 45min per Google Maps

Bob Mohle's country getaway cottage on the outskirts of Pinetop AZ was offered up as an excuse to burn off some forfeitable vacation time. With some backdrop interest in the local history surrounding lumbering/lumberingu railroads, we headed out to the White Mountains with seven basic clues;
Clue #1, Apache Railway :next: https://azmemory.azlibrary.gov/cdm/ref/ ... lhch/id/34
Clue #2, Apache Railway :next: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apache_Railway
Clue #3, Apache Railway 2004
Clue #4, Southwest Lumbering Industries logging train, circa 1910 at Standard AZ in the White Mountains :next: https://azmemory.azlibrary.gov/cdm/sing ... /35/rec/14

Day 1 - Sunday April 5th, 2015
FitBit totals = 7.64 miles, 770 AEG (77 floors)

On the road by 3pm after Easter brunch with the family. Arrived at Bob's Pinetop cottage about 7-ish and enjoyed some crisp country air with temperatures expected to drop into the hi 30's later that evening...

Day 2 - Monday April 6th, 2015
FitBit totals = 6.97 miles, 410 AEG (41 floors)

Up at dawn with a loose plan to visit Kinishba Ruins, Fort Apache Historic Park, Pacheta Lake, Pacheta Falls, and scout out remnants of the logging railway that ran between McNary and the ghost town of Maverick. Flat tire on our way out from Pacheta Falls to Maverick put an end to the exploration (made it back to Pinetop to see NCAA final game tipoff).
Apache Railway that ran from Holbrook to McNary to Maverick :next: https://azmemory.azlibrary.gov/cdm/ref/ ... lhch/id/34 NOTE: ran as a tourist train during 1960's and 1970's until fire in 1980 (1976 in some references) at the McNary Lumber Mill combined with changes in tribal lumbering policy led to its closure. Ran under brand of White Mountain Scenic Railway.

Finish the day with some "Hollywood History" by watching Walter Hill's "GERONIMO - An American Legend" with Wes Studi, Jason Patric, Gene Hackman, Matt Damon, and Robert Duvall :next: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0107004/.
Our visit to Fort Apache and seeing General Crook's cabin made me think that movie would be a great bookend to our day...
Later that night, I find the best historic reference for the Apache Railway, an article from the January 1963 Arizona Highways entitled "First Caboose to Maverick"
Day 3 - Tuesday April 7th, 2015
FitBit totals = 9.60 miles, 790 AEG (79 floors)

Up at dawn and after a hearty breakfast, headed over to Greens Peak - Four Knolls area to take in the stellar panoramic views (despite hurricane-like winds). Explored Sunrise Ski Resort area to see if tram to top of mountain was open (everything closed to public). Off to explore the headwaters of the Little Colorado and the Mount Baldy Loop. When we parked at the West Baldy Trail #95 TH, I heard a distinct hissing sound - Another flat tire!
Fortunately I was able to limp back to Pinetop where Rex @ Future Tire (https://www.futuretireaz.com ) took care of us. Today's flat was caused by a roofing nail and a simple plug-n-patch repair to the Goodyear Wrangler P275/65R18. Monday's flat was a rock puncture and not repairable. Disappointed with Ford's off-road package tires (these weren't my first off-road flat tires), I let Rex sell me a Cooper Tire Trailcutter AT2 that we mounted as my spare for now as I contemplate what to replace my other 4 tires with (anyone have experience with Cooper Tire Trailcutter AT2's???). A special "shoutout to Louis Weaver (Bob's handyman in Pinetop) who met us as we limped into town just in case we needed a ride
Lugs are 21mm, stock tire wrench lugs 7/8", yet have specialty 21mm wrench in truck
(Shouldn't the 7/8" lugs on truck all be 21mm to fit wrench?)
Back on the road after lunch at Red Devil Pizza :next: https://www.reddevilrestaurant.com (Randy and CJ took care of us during lunch) and headed over to Porter Mountain and

Day 4 - Wednesday April 8th, 2015

Day 4 of my Trip - Memorial Day....
Everyone in Camp was packing up to head back to the Heat, but Scott and Rincon wanted to go for a quick Hike since Scott had just gotten there late the Afternoon before...It was finally going to be a gorgeous Day with great Clouds, Blue Sky and Sun! Green's Peak sounded like it would Perfect, so the 3 of us took off...

Thanks to Todd's Instructions, after passing some Folks on the South Slope waving Butterfly Nets, we found the start of the Candy Mountain Trail without any Trouble and were soon Hoofing it up the fairly Steep old Road...Of course, Scott pulled ahead fairly quickly, but as usual, he was Scott, and would wait for me at various Points... :) We actually made pretty good time to the Top and with the Fire Tower Lookout being there, we took turns going up to say Hello and check out the Views...The Gal manning the Tower and her Companion were both extremely Nice and we had a Nice Chat...She's been manning this Tower for awhile, from the Conversation we had...Took some Photos, wandered around the Peak a little with Rincon, while Scott went up into the Tower...In Spite of all of the other Towers up there, it was a nice little Peak with some great Views...Headed back down after a bit and chilled for awhile next to the Vehicles before we said our Farewells. Scott and Rincon headed to the Valley, with me going back to Camp. I would be spending one more Night at our Camp before embarking on the Rest of my Trip.

A little Story you can Skip if you want, but it will explain some of the Photos...
On the Drive over to the "TH", I spotted some figures in a fairly large Meadow...I didn't want to stop, as I knew Scott was on a Timeline per se, so I made a Mental Note to check out the Meadow on the way back.

I get back to the Meadow and I can still make out 1 figure towards the Back of the Meadow...I took a small Road as far as the Corral, exited and walked in about 30 Yards and sat down in the Road...What happened for the next 20 or so minutes after that was extremely interesting and completely Out of Character for a Pronghorn. She appeared to be by herself and when she saw me, she actually didn't react much. So after a few Photos, I got up and moved about another 20 Yards and sat down again. That got her moving, but not quite like I expected...She started walking towards me! And the Curiosity Peaked between her and I...I didn't understand it at the Time, but I was happy to get more than a few Photos...She would walk towards me and then I would Zoom in or out and either the Noise or the Movement would scare her and she would bound away, but never really away from me. More, parallel to me across the Meadow. Then she would stop, stare at me some more and then start Walking towards me again...This went on for at least 20 minutes...At one time, she actually got so close, that I realized she was vocalizing and I could hear her and see it. I can actually say that this is the first Time when Photographing Pronghorn where I have ended the Shoot, by finally walking away and leaving her be to her Meadow... :) On the Drive back to Camp, I kept mulling over her Curious Behavior and wondering if it was sheer Curiosity or something else that made her behave that way...And then, it dawned on me...I've seen this Behavior before in a Long-eared Owl in Hess Canyon...It would fly away, but never far, and would not leave the Area. I suspected, that at that time of Year, it must have had a Nest nearby...That's when I realized, that the Multiple Pronghorn that I'd seen earlier, may have been this Doe and at least 1 Fawn, maybe 2...They had probably laid down somewhere in the immediate Vicinity and she didn't want to leave them. As far as her actually Walking towards me? I don't know, combination of Curiosity and maybe flat out not knowing what I was, since I didn't move much and was sitting down at Grass Level...My Suspicions about possible Fawns may have been confirmed when I went through the Photos today...She was lactating...If I had known then, would I have gone off in Search of them? No...If they had been out and about, I may have attempted a few long Shots, or if I had just stumbled on them while I was Hiking or Wandering, I probably would have taken a Shot or two...But they were Hiding at this Point and to seek them out with an already nervous Parent is uncalled for and unnecessary...Better to walk away and leave them be to their nice little Meadow...That's just how I roll these days I guess...In certain circumstances, I'm not about doing whatever it takes to get a Shot...The Wildlife come first... :)

I got back to Camp and everyone else was gone...It was almost as though they had never been...I think we're all pretty good at LNT even when Camping...It was eerily quiet with just the gusty Winds blowing through the Pines and the Scolding of an occasional Squirrel...

It was a great, fun Weekend with good Friends and although most of the Rest of my Trip would be Solo, I would meet a few more nice people along the Way...Just another good Day in the Outdoors... :)

Cold start to Memorial Day weekend on Greens Peak. We did this short little hike as warm up for the bigger hike of Baldy next day. Snow was threatening off and on but not too bad if you kept moving. We went up the Candy Mtn Trail which is on the back side of Greens Peak. Looks like the trail is used by mountain bikers with lots of jumps built in.

We started on the northeast corner of Greens Peak at a big camping area used by mountain bikers at the base of what they call the Candy Mountain Trail. I can't find any information online as to why this is called Candy Mountain, but the mtbr forums refers to Greens Peak as Candy Mountain, and there are numerous tracks that get frequent fat tire use. Apparently they shuttle to the top in vehicles, and then bomb down the mountain on bikes. There are numerous terrain features and structures built for biking enthusiasts.

I believe that the lower portion of this hike is along the Candy Mountain Trail, but about 3/4 mile up you reach a junction where another old road heads down the west slope. I believe that the west descent is actually the Greens Peak Trail, and I don't know where it's bottom terminus is. Perhaps the old FR 8578, or even all the way down to FR 61? In any case, both used to be roads, but the mountain bikers appear to stick to the north and northeast flanks of the mountain. The old west road would be interesting to explore as well. Both roads come together and ascend the final 1/4 mile to the fire lookout and antenna farm.

I saw an interesting memorial/grave site off the trail north of the summit. A quick web search turned up nothing.

The fire tower is one of the nicest I've seen. We were there late in the day so the lookout was not on duty, which is too bad, as I would have liked to ask him/her about the trail, biking use, and the grave. Oh well, next time I guess...

It was cold and windy for our hike with a few bursts of snow flurries along the way. Views included some snow showers in the distance, but fortunately the lightning we had experienced a couple of hours prior was no longer an issue.

After getting camp set up, Bifrost, Chumley, BrunoP and I set off to make a quick summit of Greens Peak. We started fairly late in the day on the northeast side of the mountain. The trail makes a steep ascent to the summit. There are a bunch of mountain bike jumps and ramps along the hike. I could see those guys blasting down the trail and then shuttling back to the top for another run. Would be good fun!

We arrived at the summit and had a walk around. It was very windy and chilly up there. Views are nice all around. After we got our fill we returned to the truck and then back to camp.

This is a nice summit that can be completed in less than an hour. Give it a go if you’re in the area and have some time to kill.
