Hiking the entire Balancing Rock Trail #349, starting from the Cayuse Equestrian Trailhead and turning back at Trail #40, you will mostly hike among Ponderosa pines and Gambel, Emory and Arizona white oaks with a section of junipers and pinyon pines near the trailhead. At the start of November 2025, the Gambel oaks and many shrubs were bright yellow to reddish-brown (see photo) with the three-leaf sumacs occasionally red to the color of hammered copper (see photo) and some leaves on a pineywoods geranium turning red. Any time of year there are close-up views of Granite Mountain from the southeast side to due south, including the cliff face where peregrine falcons nest in the spring. On the return trip, watch for a view of the San Fancisco Peaks and Mogollon Rim (see photo). I've hiked Balancing Rock Trail several times looking for a balancing rock. One of the photos in this photoset is the best I've come to finding it. Perhaps the rock that appears ready to slide off was upright in the past.

This "tadpole loop" starts at the Iron Springs Trailhead west of Prescott, AZ. The "tail" of the loop is the northern 3 miles or so of Javelina Trail #332, plus a few tenths of a mile of Willow Connector Trail #346 to the Cayuse equestrian parking lot. The loop consists of West Lake Trail #351 which starts at the north end of the Cayuse parking lot and ends at Balancing Rock Trail #349 at the south end of the lot. Balancing Rock Trail continues for less than a mile to the NNW, but this hike returns to the Cayuse parking lot by turning south on Balancing Rock Trail. For the 10.6 miles of this hike, return via Willow Connector Trail and Javelina Trail to the Iron Springs Trailhead. For about a 3 mile shorter tadpole loop, you can park where Javelina Trail crosses Granite Basin Road, or park in the Cayuse parking lot and just do the 4.5 mile loop formed by West Lake and Balancing Rock Trails.

Full harem hike in Prescott this morning. 68 degree start at 8am at Cayuse picnic area. Took West Lake trail towards the lake and then returned on Balancing Rock trail to the trailhead. Great hike in the shade of tall pine trees. Bugs were terribly distracting during the hike. Only saw a few hikers and one small group of mountain bikers. No horses on this trip.

Good hike but the summit was way tougher than I remembered. It could have been the "alternate" route we took up :D We were all pretty ready to be down from there quickly. I couldn't believe the summit was already swarming with ladybugs-- seems early. Lily did really well-- though I wouldn't recommend taking dogs up to the true summit. She loves that kind of climbing but had to find a couple work-arounds on the way down (she never needed to be picked up lowered). Even though she's done more mileage and almost double that aeg in a day-- I would consider this the most challenging hike she's done. It was my first time doing the Little Granite Mtn Loop and that was really enjoyable :D

We headed back out to Granite Mountain in Prescott. Kyle and I hiked to the peak a few years ago and decided to return. This time we started with the Little Granite Mountain Loop. We made quick time as we traversed around this side peak. We took a break before we started the hike up the Granite Mountain Trail. We made steady progress as we hiked up the trail. Once up top we opted to head directly for the peak skipping the viewpoint. The going was relatively easy for the first half mile. There were some sporadic cairns that helped but you can’t rely on them and I referred to Route Scout to keep us on track. The climb to the summit went well as we fought our way up. The entire off trail portion of this hike is burned out. I had lots of ash on my hands and clothes.

We topped out and signed the register and took our lunch. The summit is covered in Ladybugs. You had to be careful where you stepped because there were clusters of hundreds of them. After our break we made our return which went really well. We descended from the peak and Lily, Kyle’s dog, did great although I don’t recommend taking dogs to the summit. Once back on trail we flew down and were back to the car around mid-afternoon. It was a nice day in Prescott.

I'm glad I had the chance to hike and get this mountain. The lower trails were a breeze and we easily made good time which came to a screeching halt as we entered the higher trails and the summit came into view. Awesome views at the top, but also lots of lady bugs hanging out which is fine, however I was grossed out because I didn't want to crush any of them and at some spots it was difficult. The bushwhacking to the summit was tougher than I anticipated but we still made really good time and were back at the car in the early afternoon. The trails were also fairly empty which was a surprise.

Sam and I did the loop from the Metate TH on trails 353, 351, 346, 349, and 261 back to trailhead. Nice trails especially 349. Saw a deer dash across the trail ahead of us and a few other hikers.

Went up north to breath cool forest air and be bitten by lakeside gnats. Hiked a loop from Cayuse trailhead: 349 - 261 - 353 - 351 to 349 junction - 351 back to Cayuse.
