Went for a pleasant mid day walk to a place I've always been interested in for photo opportunities.
Just like all my hikes in the past week I encountered another group of deer around the rim of the lake.
The wildlife this year seems to be booming, I've seen more elk, deer, bear and turkeys this June/July than in the past 5 years combined!
It may have something to do with the fact I've been living out of my SUV in the woods for nearly a month straight but that will be addressed at some other point.
The lake appeared dry form a distance but upon arrival there was still a substantial amount of water and even enough to swim in that is if you don't mind stagnant dirty booty water all over you.

We left the Valley early Saturday morning and hit the trails off of FR 151 before there were any snow-players on highway 180. It was a nice partly-cloudy day in the low 40s with excellent views of the peaks! We found our own route up the ridgeline of the crater that surrounds Walker Lake, and then skied down the FR back to the 151. We found a little surprise just off the 151: a baby grand piano. After singing a few tunes, we headed back toward the 180. By the time we returned to the vehicle, there were 25 cars in the parking area and kids sledding across the cattle guard. :o
Next time I will have to find a more remote place to ski...

Nice to be in the cool pines. Much cooler than 2 days ago heading up from Lockett. Didn't seem as busy as expected. We've had to park in the nose bleed section of the Kachina lot in June many times in years past. The main lot was about 70% full at 8am. Friendly hikers throughout with several HAZ hellos! Great to meet @mr14ner, @DallinW & @adrenna! The monster gnats were fairly tame until the breeze died at the summit.

Hit up Philomena Spring and the Hot Tub Time Machine down to AZT 34. Kinna warm for 9k feet. Met some nice resourceful locals just before the AZT, then the friendliest mountain bikers on earth along the AZT to Walker Lake. The lake albeit dry turned out to be a nice gander.

Thx Ray for driving & shuttling the chariot

The lot was probable 1/3 full at our 8:10 start when Ray dropped us off. The trail was not as crowded as expected. Met HAZ members @mr14ner, @DallinW & @adrenna on the way up. Great to meet you all! Temps were perfect.

A 200' patch of snow to get to the peak, 72 degree temps and gnatty when the wind stopped. Two fires could be seen north of Kendrick, close to each other and two more in what I'm guessing to be the Pivot Rock areas. The Inner Basin has a bit of snow and the Aspens are greening up nicely

We had to get off the unofficial trail because of snow. We Jigsawed around the snow and downfall to get back to the trail. Once out to the meadow area, we ran into the couple who unofficially take care of the trail. They said they did not get to any maintenance last year. They gave us some great info about the area and Philomena Spring. There used to be a trough system that ran over to the old ranch carrying water from Philomena Spring. My rough estimate shows that to be more that 3 miles of trough! The trough has been replaced by pipe and the pipe no longer works. There are remnants of both in the area.

Nice to be back on a trail, and the AZT to boot!
Ray was waiting at Walker Lake when we got there.

We took a quick spin to the lake to check it out.

After months of training for this brutal excursion, we got an early start and made good time into the cauldron of monsoon soup. I was hoping for a bit more water, but it was still a neat area to see. It's funny that from the "outside" it just looks like a normal hill. It's a nice surprise to see the crater with a lake in it!

You could see a line in the grass that looks like a high-water mark, but that probably only happens in spring after snowmelt?

Yay Hiking! Ok I know this is not much but its better than nothing. My ankle felt okay on this. No setbacks is good even on the super easy stuff.

Not much of a "Lake" but a very neat crater with a swampy marshy thing in the center.
Lots of elk and/or cow bones...Freds.

The "road" that is now off limits goes/went all the way down into the crater and ends square at a quaint...and smelly...little "campsite". Not my idea of a spring vacation but whatever.

Tooons of lovely wildflowers, more perfect weather. Thanks Chums or 9L or Aviator...whoever had the idea to head out there, I enjoyed this a lot.

Quick trip to check out the wildflowers with the Macro lens. The wind proved to be quite challenging! Lots of water in the pond and who would have believed, larkspur in August!

I needed a midweek getaway and I knew the sis could us a trip so we left the heat and woes of the valley and went north. I told her I knew where some wildflowers and butterflies were (Thanks Fotogirl! :) ) so we headed towards Hart Prarie. We left at 6 to try to beat the storms for at least part of the day but it was still overcast for most of it. I let her hold the map and mark off the FR's as we passed them. We drove towards the Michelbach Ranch and hiked over to the cabins. We spent the rest of the morning climbing hills, exploring the buildings and photo'in flowers. Back at the Xterra we ate lunch before moving out. We ended up at the Bismark Lake trailhead and then hiked over to it shooting butterflies along the way. On the way back the sky opened up but we were ready with the ponchos. The rain sounded great in the woods and tapping on our coverings.
It let up as we drove over to Walker Lake. As we hiked up and into the crater it rained off and on as we wandered around it.
We then tried to see how many different roads we could take to get towards Crater Lake. While offtrail hiking nearby we found a very old cabin next to a sinkhole.
We saw a few deer and an elk while out.
We ended the day at Cracker Barrel where a random stranger lady approached our table and asked: "Oh my, were you one of the ones caught in the flood yesterday? I couldn't help but notice how muddy your Jeep was when you came in."
On the way back we got to call 911 on a lightning fire Dana spotted in a tree off the interstate.
