This outing had been on my want list since Oct 2022. A friend had been wanting to go to the E Supes. Two others were also up for this mega adventure. Met in Tempe at 7:30.

Turn off into Pinto Mine area. Once onto forest land the road grows rougher. There is a drop off on one side. Between Paradise Trail & Myles TH is the roughest patch. Start hike 10 am 37 degrees. Cold hands 1st mile. Jacket off after 2 miles.

We were thrilled by the beauty and solitude. Wildlife tracks and scat. Primarily bear & deer. No human prints. Bull Basin seriously overgrown. Expect to bleed. RF rating of 1 on here clearly needs to be updated. No possible way to justify a rating below 3.

Bout the time I was finally growing tired of getting smacked in the face by vegetation, we hit Haunted Canyon. Steep ascent with switchbacks. Paradise Trail-actually rocky and steep. This eventually gives way to a magnificent stroll. Plus skunks. 🦨

In regard to the Bull Basin Trail, the same as what Ms. Stardust said previously. Essentially a one-off in its current lousy condition. I regularly thought I was going to step on a viper or come face-to-face with a bear tunneling through the vegetation from about miles three through six (CW loop ascending). Gritty and painful chaparral slogging with not many views. Don't plan on making good time through this section. I had researched FOTG's and some others routes for Government Hill and was strongly drawn to bailing from the Bull Basin Trail on GH's western side and traversing over the top, but stuck it out like a bull because I wanted to complete the whole trail and not have to go back and repeat the torture again. Once reaching the Haunted Canyon Trail, the hiking was more enjoyable and quicker. I ascended/descended the standard Government Hill route, which was surprising good (practically zero bushwhacking). The views were better than expected also. The descent of Paradise was unique and quite pretty with plentiful water sources still. Someone has pruned recently, but there is one massive deadfall that blocks the whole trail on the lower section. One of the best highlights was two small yellow/black birds (orioles?) that were battling a Hau'Pal on the trail in front of me. Another significant observation was all the bear scat and tracks throughout the loop. The cypress groves are also neat and remind me of Stewart Pocket. Yup, Supes hiking in mid June! :?

Started at Paradise and came back through Bull Basin. Several miles of Bull Basin were pretty choked with all the pokey plants, the worst being catclaw. Seeing a few manzanitas to push through was a welcome break. :) Pretty decent water out there and saw no one on trail, just campers at Miles TH. Probably wouldn’t do Bull Basin all the way through again unless there’s future maintenance.

Another stroll in the Supes. The morning started off with some miss cues but it all worked out. The forest road is in okay shape with a few small washed out bumps but nothing too bad. The Bull Basin trail could use a trim but I had no problem following the trail. We somehow walked past the unknown cowboy grave but then noticed two ruins the trail runs through the middle of. The creek was flowing but easy crossing and there where a few trees down on Paradise trail to keep the wild in wilderness. We noticed the short cut route at the fence line that goes over Government Hill ridge but saved that for another trip. No critters on the hike but I did slow down for 4 mules does on the drive out. All in all a successful hike with good company.

Chris invited me on this cool loop. Wally joined us at the trailhead.

The hike was a little more challenging than I expected, but it was an awesome way to spend a Saturday for sure.

The hike up the Bull Basin side seemed never-ending, lots of switchbacks at the top. The first part of this trail was along Rock Creek and was really beautiful. Lots of water flowing in the creek. Once we started up (and up and up), the forest gave way to manzanita. Wally pointed out a few ruins and found a good number of sherds along this trail. We missed the unknown cowboy grave and I told Wally I will have to ding his Trip Advisor review now…ha ha.

There was some overgrowth at the top of Bull Basin. It got a little hairy in there. Once everything blooms and gets leaves, it will be a much harder path to navigate. The manzanita was blooming and had a very fragrant flower for sure.

The back side of the loop was steep at the start, but eventually followed Haunted Canyon creek. That was flowing nice all along the trail. Heading back up the Paradise side was a steep climb up as well. I was moving turtle speed up this portion. Wally and Chris left me in the dust. I made pretty good time once gravity was on my side going down.

Paradise was really beautiful in the forested sections. The creek was running and there were little falls all along the path. It was flowing all the way to the road.

I finally made it down to the end and Chris was driving up from the Miles TH and spared me the last ¼ mile walk up the road.

A very cool area in the Eastern Supes for sure!

1st trip
Finally got some new tires on the Stillermobile, so I'm good to dare out on the rougher roads of the eastern Supes. This was one I had my eye on to do for a little while, and this time of year is probably the best. At the end of last week's hike to Broadway Cave, I mentioned it to Wally and he liked it. I told him I would send my usual follow up confirmation email next week to confirm. But, sometimes, things fall thru the cracks.

I arrived at Wally's darkened house at 5:28am, with no Wally outside. Uh-oh. Oh yeah, I forgot to send that email. I decided to go ahead and ring the doorbell, as soon as I could find it in the dark. The door opened just enough for him to stick his head out, no glasses and squinty eyes.

"You weren't gonna do it. It's not on the Wishlist."
"I forgot to email you. I'm sorry. My fault. I almost forgot to message Andy until yesterday afternoon. I kept meaning to email you..." :sorry:
"No problem. I meant to email you."
"Yeah, I was supposed to email you, anyway, my bad, I'm sorry. "
"ok"

and the door was closed. :scared: Now, if I hadn't known Wally for 13 years now, this might seem rude. But I knew what the abrupt shutting of the door meant. He wasn't going back to sleep. And he knew where we were going. We was going to catch up with us. there was a precedent set for this 11 (OMG, THAT long ago?) years ago. I had to move, Andy was waiting.

Andy said to meet at the Safeway at Ellsworth and Baseline. I pulled in and saw no Safeway. then I could tell after a few minutes that the Safeway had closed. After a few more minutes, Andy pulled in. I drove over to him.

"I forgot to do the confirmation email to Wally, so he might be out. But, maybe not. He's probably going to catch up with us."
"we can call him to see"
"yeah, that's not how this works. :SB: "

We arrived at the trailhead about 7:30am, and got ready. Within 5 minutes, I could hear a car driving up.

"Here he is."
"You guys haven't started yet? I even stopped for gas."
"Oh man, you were right!"

And we did the hike.

Bull Basin is kind of overgrown. Not terrible. Uphill with the overgrowth, loose rock, and steep. At the saddle we all felt pretty spent. On the way up to the saddle, Wally pointed out some not at all obvious ruins and casually found several pottery sherds along way and set them on rocks so we could see them. Andy and I had to concentrate on keeping our balance and breathing. We noticed the faint trail shortcut over Govt Hill to Paradise along that ridgeline. Another day. : rambo :

Downhill felt better at first, then it seemed like a slog until the low point. The lower we got, the worse the overgrowth at points. Finally I reached the bottom with Wally waiting and had lunch while we waited for Andy. He had some work related satellite texts to deal with that held him up, so Wally started to head back up the trail before he found him almost immediately (after I wolfed down my lunch).

The hike back uphill wasn't so bad. We knew we did 1700' out of 2600', this should be a cakewalk. :y: Bit of a slog in places, not very bad. At the 2nd saddle it was all downhill from there. the trail was much less overgrown, but still a bit in spots. A protruding branch smacked me in my temple on the way down at one point. Other than, that, the last mile the soreness kicked in and slowed me down a bit.

Lots of water out there still. Very nice to hear the running water and make the many stream crossings necessary. Several spots on all the trails seemed to follow the stream bed at times, making it a little confusing at first, but easy to navigate. Very fun day in the Supes with great weather and great company. :rollH:

Recent triplogs made me think this would be a good loop. Nope. Bull Basin needs some work again. I wonder if it was the heavy snow last winter, but there's a lot of taller stuff that has bowed over into the trail that has to be pushed through. The tread is clear though. It got progressively worse on the climb from Bull Basin up to the saddle, and the entire downhill side south of the saddle to the Haunted Canyon junction was a mess of overgrowth and a lot of catclaw. The initial descent off the saddle has some pretty good water erosion, with several of the water bars completely gone.

The rest of the hike was great. The northern section of Bull Basin is beautiful, as is the lower part of Paradise. In the middle, the trip to Tonys and back is very nice. It was warm in the sun for November and while we had planned for that, we had not anticipated how cold it would be to start. Temps in the 30s made the first couple of miles a real chill.

Stupid amount of bear poop on Bull Basin. The most I've seen on a single trail ever. Several were still warm. No direct sightings though.

I headed out to one of my old haunts with John in search of waterfalls today. The marquee falls were a no go, but there was plenty of water and some nice secondary falls and cascades. Bull Basin is a top notch trail with flowing water. All the trails along the loop were in excellent shape, it rained from the moment we started hiking until we finished. The road in was a little slippery.

There was plenty of water for the dogs the whole way. Paradise trail is the best part. I started at bull basin, to it was a nice way to finish the hike. I ran into some people fixing up the trail. Great people and much appreciated.

After a bit of a dry spell it was nice to get back to Miles TH. 287 through the mine is in great shape. 287a seemed a little rougher than I remember but still 2wd passable. It looked like it was recently graded which dug up a lot of small rocks so I felt like Ace Ventura bouncing along down the road.

Paradise Trail is a real treat, absolutely beautiful, and with water flowing most of the way elevates this trail to a 5+ IMO. Passed a couple trail crews along the upper sections of Haunted Canyon Trail but other than that we saw no others. Took a break and had a snack near Tony Cabin Spring. Bull Basin Trail, as reported by others, is in nice shape. Not as groomed as Paradise and Haunted Canyon but very easy to follow. Really enjoyed this hike on this day :D

Rick's Son, Dustin is visiting from the U P Michigan, wanted to do some camping and hiking. We scouted out Miles TH last month and determined if we are to camp there it has to be during the week to have some solitude :) . Showed up mid morning on Monday and :o only one spot left to set up camp :pout: We made the best of the situation and it turned out, no problem, was all quite around us. After we set up camp, gathered all the camp wood, we set out on West Pinto to Cuff Button and returned. Met a young lady heading up to Oak flats to set up camp, found out she was part of the Arizona Conservation Corps, and rest of the group was joining her on Tuesday. The plan was to scout out all the trails in the area, and process them for future trail maintenance this summer and have work done by next fall. :D Also all the other camp sites were occupied by Wilderness Volunteers planning on working this week on Trail Maintenance, Monday they finished Paradise Trail, Tuesday they were heading up Bull Basin Trail to the saddle. So looks and sounds like Miles TH will be busy hosting work crews this summer. According to their Web site, Champaign Trail is on the agenda this week. Tuesday Bull Basin Loop was our chosen hike. Wow hats off to all that has done this :) When they say steep, they mean steep !!! Got to Haunted Canyon finally :scared: took the side trip over to Tony's. While there we met 3 yes 3 state workers from the Fishery Dep't, checking if there were any fish my the stream next to the cabin, talk about time wasted management :( :? Great time can't wait to get back.

Came armed with hand trimmers and lopers but there was little to do - although I did do some cat-claw eradication just to keep in shape for it.
Trails were awesome and water was flowing in every drainage of note - a beautiful time to do the hike. No trail sign at either end of the Paradise Trail, but it it pretty obvious.

ray and john had monday off, so we picked the best weather day of the holiday weekend to hike bull basin loop
road was a little muddy, but ray had no issues on the drive in
37 degrees around 7:30, starting out on west pinto trail
came to our first crossing of rock creek and found a slick log to crawl over
stayed dry on that one, but gave it up on the next 40 or so
there was water flowing in every creek and drainage, and often on the trail
the bigger crossings got pretty cold :o
turned onto bull basin trail, which climbed to a saddle and then dropped down to haunted canyon trail
took the side trip to the cabin as i had not seen it
cool spot for a snack break
headed back to the intersection with paradise trail, which also climbed to a saddle
the initial descent was a little steep, rocky and wet, but soon moderated into a nice dirt path through the woods
finished up and headed into superior for a late lunch at los hermanos
fun hike on all new trails for me
good company, too
trails were in great shape - very little brush
love seeing some new territory in the eastern superstitions
thanks for driving, ray
plenty more to do from miles trailhead, which is worthy of some wandering around to check out the old ranch stuff

Kelly and I have been talking about doing something out this way and agreed on the Bull Basin Loop with a side trip to Tony Ranch. It was scheduled for Sunday, but rain got in the way. Monday looked better. John was looking for a hike so we invited him along too.

Running water ruled the day. We initially thought that log crawling across a creek at the outset would keep our feet dry. A couple of dozen or more creek crossings later we didn't care about wet feet. Some of the creeks resembled rivers. Some sections of the trails resembled creeks. At the saddle near the start of the Paradise Trail, John noted that it was the first time all day we could not hear running water.

The trails are in excellent shape. As noted in a couple of recent triplogs, they've been trimmed back nicely. A tiny bit of catclaw here and there, but easily avoidable. A little muddy here and there, more so at the saddle on Paradise trail, but a day or two of sunshine will make it all good.

We took a nice break at the cabin on Tony Ranch. What little bit of sunshine we had at the outset gave way to overcast skies. Our wet feet could have used some sun. Instead, they started to get cold. Time to move. It was 37 degrees at the start and it didn't get anywhere close to the promised high in the low 60's.

Wet, cloudy or cold, it didn't matter today; this was a fun hike. If you're on the fence about this one, or if you hiked it when it was bushy on Bull Basin trail, you should get out there. This is good hiking with the opportunity for much more. We all had fun.

John and Kelly, it was great hiking with you!

After careful deliberation Ray and Kelly decided to let me tag along on their adventure. Cool and wet. We'll all be jealous in a few months. Many creek crossings during the hike. Stayed dry for quite a few, but some weren't worth the effort. Once your feet are wet, it really doesn't matter much anymore.

This is my third time to Toney Cabin. Each time by a different route. Still don't know my way around very well. The trails are in good shape even though they have been hit hard by recent rains. The lower part of Paradise trail is very nice. Lots of cypress and sycamore trees.

Fun hike with awesome company! Thanks Ray and Kelly. :)

Denny needed to hike the Bull Basin and Paradise trails so this loop fit the plan. The morning was cool with cloud cover but the air was still so was nice. We stopped by the unknown cowboy grave and continued on. There was a small tree blocking the Bull Basin trail so we moved it aside and started the climb. The surprise for the day was the amount of snow on the trail and the amount of water flowing. We must have crossed 30+ washes. We made a quick stop at the ranch and detoured out old Haunted Canyon trail. Once we hit Paradise trail the sun was out and it was down hill most of the way back. It was a nice day with the water flowing and snowball throwing.

Wally agreed to take me to the snow :y: . Will I need my Grand Canyon pass? Wally SUPES Farak... :sl: . Kidding.
Wally is helping me knock off some Supes hikes. We did the Bull Basin Loop to get Bull Basin and Paradise Trails in. We added Tony's Cabin and a little exploring and took the old Haunted Canyon since I've done the new one before. We didn't expect all the water crossing's or the snow :o . It was actually pretty cool and the weather was near perfect. The trails were creeks in a few place but trimmed up nicely. Only one tree down on each trail and we moved all three of them : rambo : . We even had to move one rock over on the road in. There is one more rock to squeeze by but will take more than Wally and I to move. All but the widest of vehicles will be fine. Great day in the Supes! Thanks Wally. like Haz, :yr:

Today was Daniela's birthday hike. I came up with several different hike options for her to choose from, and Lee contributed one hike suggestion too. Daniela chose Lee's suggestion of Bull Basin Loop. Whitney, Debbie, and I met at Daniela's house just after 6:00, and got to the trailhead a few minutes before 8:00.

It was 37 degrees when we started, yay! We headed west on Pinto, then up Bull Basin. Nice, steady climb and the trail was in good shape. It must have hailed yesterday or last night, because there was still a lot on and alongside the trail. When we reached Haunted Canyon, we headed east to Tony Ranch, had lunch, then returned and west up Haunted Canyon and Paradise trail back to the road, then a quick walk on the road back to the car. It was cool--almost cold--and windy all day; 50 degrees when we finished.

Wonderful way to celebrate our friend's birthday by exploring the eastern Superstitions. This mountain range continues to fascinate me with its diverse landscapes. I enjoyed the hike to Tony's Ranch as well as the beautiful trek through Haunted Canyon. Gorgeous overcast day for the most part. The sun graced us with an appearance a couple of times but this made for a truly cool, crisp, fall hike in temperatures in the 40's. Happy Birthday, Daniela!
