In addition to the short walk, I logged 4 miles of flatwater paddling on the "lake".

Bruce lucked out by somehow declining to join on this one despite the obvious benefits someone of his advanced age and questionable calf measurements could gain from an adventure such as this.

As it turned out, what is regularly my favorite central Arizona lake was nothing but misery today. The level is about 8-feet low, which isn't great, but is easily overcome on a lake this size. Starting at the head of the lake, however, makes for really shallow water and quicksand mud shorelines. Thankfully, my buoyant calves kept me from sinking thigh deep before managing to get on my board.

While prepping on shore, I was relentlessly pelted by nasty biting flies (horseflies?) that would not leave me alone. I wasn't prepared for this onslaught. Shouldn't the fish eat these beasts?

Oh, no. Not this year. There are no fish. The lake is a cauldron of death. An algae bloom was in full swing, and while I floated easily across the surface, there was absolutely no option for a refreshing swim. :sk:

I held out hope that as I made my way north the condition would improve with the deeper and cooler water near the dam. That was not to be. It only got worse. I gave up before the dam, turning back between large floating algaebergs that now began to give off an odor that would make your average FS pit toilet site a delightful reprieve. (Thankfully the rest of the lake was odor free).

Nearby rain showers cleared as the afternoon progressed and a light breeze made the 87 degree temp feel like the 70s.

The 3.5 miles of road to the trailhead is as miserable as ever. I wish there had been more rain this summer, but when that road gets muddy and puddled it's almost impassable, so the dry conditions were ok for this purpose.

Stopped by Bear Canyon on the way out for a twilight swim to fully cleanse any residual toxicity I might have picked up on the day.

I don't know how long a bloom lasts, but I wouldn't waste your time visiting this lake for at least a few weeks.

9L had never done this one and since we were in the hood with some time to kill, I suggested it might be fun.

I forgot how awful the 4 miles of driving on 180 is. Not much water in the deep mud puddles, but so much more bone-jarring rocky than I remembered.

9 or 10 vehicles were parked at the trailhead and we passed a couple of groups along the way to the lake. As we learned yesterday, the lake is about an adult low, but at the head of the lake it is much more apparent than at the dam.

It was actually a little bit warm in the sun. October 27. Go figure.

I've never hit up Chevelon lake before and for some reason, the idea popped in my head to give that a go this weekend. My main off pavement vehicle is a subaru, so I was curious about the last bit of road. Things are pretty interesting now with 300 being completely paved (at least to the 169 intersection) and then 169 and 119 have to be the most manicured gravel roads to ever exist. The last 4ish miles on 180/180b are definitely not super highways. It took me about 35 minutes going in and 30 going out for those four miles. It's not the worse but definitely not something for a sedan and clearly hasn't seen any maintenance for years. Some off canter sections, some pokey rock sections but most trucks and SUVs can make it if the driver has a bit of sense and a little experience picking the right line. A couple of spots would make me not want to do it without 4WD or AWD if there are muddy conditions, though, so keep that in mind for sure. The trip back is a little more difficult as you are coming uphill for the first bit, I did lose traction in one spot and had to reverse and pick a different line. Something to keep in mind.

The hike down was a pleasant surprise; the trail is in great condition and a quick jaunt. I ended up spending a couple of days hiking all around, settling on a base camp around where the creek feeds the lake. Absolutely beautiful place, caught quite a few fish, wish I had realized this is where every crawdad in Arizona apparently starts from so I would've been prepared to catch and cook those guys. Walking the shore, every step I took made dozens of them flee in a fury.

Overall, great trip. The hike out was warm so I was glad I took the shortest route down to the lake. I was absolutely surprised with how much trash and crap there is in the camp spots, though, with how much harder this is to get to than many other places I go to. Every firepit is just filled with cans and bottles. Also, a lot of crappy bushcraft projects all over the place? More than I've seen anywhere else as well. I guess they feel it's "remote" so it's okay? Either way, a very pleasant trip.

Spent an enjoyable weekend camping in the ASNF with a few different short hikes exploring the use trails established by folks who like to fish. It's been a few years since I was here last, and the road in is definite high-clearance now and probably requires 4wd if wet and muddy. This area is a real gem.

Parked near the end of 119 and 180 intersection early Friday morning. Hiked 180 the four miles into Chevelon lake. Only one group camped near the roads end and nobody camped down at the lake. I followed the trail on past the first obvious campsite. Very trashed, broken glass, TP... The spot further down was better and had a better view without the muddy lake front property. There were a few guys launching float tubes and they were complaining about the mud. Seems like the water is really low. Had several drops of rain Friday afternoon but otherwise just cloudy. Right before dark, the buzz of mosquitos is super loud and they were thick, but not one bite. Saturday I hiked south along the creek a mile or two just fishing around and lounging in the hammock. Hiked out Sunday morning and had a dusty drive out.

We had originally intended to head to clear creek for a paddle for the day, but we got a later start than intended then had a dead battery, so we’ll be saving that for another day. Thank you to the family down the road for helping us get started. We headed out for the main entrance to Chevelon lake with hopes of it not being as busy on a Sunday. James carried his two person inflatable kayak down the steep hill and I carried the backpack with our stuff. It wasn’t too busy down there which was nice! However, he was missing a piece to the kayak so that plan didn’t happen. It weighs 80 pounds, so we were very appreciative to the people who offered to bring it back up on their trailer. We relaxed by the lake in the shade for a bit and watched some dogs playing in the water. Then we explored around the corner past the dam and found a nice big pool with no one there! We swam and cooled off for a bit before heading back up the hill.

Really had just wanted to take a dip away from the crowds so this was perfect! Road was not awful, but not great, so doable with some clearance. The route down to the water was super easy to follow and not that steep either! There were minimal people there and it was easy to get privacy! We walked along the shoreline until we reached a spot that looked calm enough to float. The water was super refreshing and the scenery was beautiful. We floated for a while until the sky started looking questionable and the winds picked up. Once it was too choppy float, we dried off and went back to camp. On the way out a snake fell out of James’ backpack :scared:

Compared to the Weimer Ridge Trail this one is walk in the park, not that Weimer was hard but wow is this little path down to the lake/creek is almost a cheater, luckily the drive in is long and bumpy keeping out pseudo trucks, SUVs and the rest of the general riff raff.

With this visit I headed upstream for a few miles to uncovered ground for myself, I made my best attempt to stay off the beaten path but it seems like this area is hit hard by fisherman and sportsman alike.
I was told by locals that 10 years ago that you could walk for miles without seeing anyone down here and definitely never came across trash and over developed campsites around every corner but things have changed since then and Chevy is popular.
Nonetheless it’s a beaut and one of my favorite places to cool off on The Rim, I wandered into some side canyons and in one of them discovered a decomposing small elk calf most likely due to a lion kill.

Had a great encounter with a solid herd of 20-25 elk, mainly cows near a big wallow area near the canyons walls along the creeks marshy side flow.
My dog may love this place more than I as she munched on old elk heads, splashed in the water like a goof and ate every species of scat she could get her mouth on.

Again though the sand in Chevy and it’s entire vicinity is dangerously hot for a dogs paws, I’m not b.s. when I say it’s scalding hot to attempt to hold in your hands.
Luckily we had nice clouds and storms forming in the afternoon but our path of travel was either directly in the water or the grassy knolls, the sand was just way too hot for a pup.

I packed in something special on this hike and had a memorable moment soaking it in along an idyllic secluded spot along the creek, truly blessed.

so it's a rough road. and.... it's an unmaintained old pumpkin road on top of the rim. gets a bunch of seasonal snow and rain. and mostly used by hunters in the fall. i never needed 4wd for any section of the 4 miles in, it was dry.
the trail leading down is the easiest, imho, of the 4 that reach the bottom of chevelon canyon in this area. a straight, mild grade about 1/2 mile to the bottom. here you can find plenty of hanging trees and a few eyesore campspots with fire rings, most of them not 1 yard off the trail. by the way, the fishing here sucks. don't go. it's a waste of time. go to woods canyon instead.

we saw no others at the bottom. caught and released several native trout, 13" being the smallest of the lot.

My Dad and I took my 4 YO son to Chevelon Lake to introduce him to camping and Kayaking. Nice 3 generation Father's Day camping trip! The last 4 miles of FR 180 were definitely high-clearance only. As my Dad said..."Keeps the Prius crowd out of there!" :y: Arrived at the end of FR180 and there were already folks camping at the best spot (Right on the edge of the canyon. :( So we made do at an adjacent spot and embarked on a great weekend filled with tents, hammocks, hikes, kayak, rock jumping and some Rye and cigars once jr. went to sleep! :D

Very nice local with a brown Doberman Pinscher (Tonto?) told us about the flat rock on the edge of the lake for some great swimming and jumping. Thank You! Heading back up there very soon. Might try the east side next time to get the seclusion we sought. Not sure about any trail down from the ridge on the east side though...more research needed.

After spending an hour driving down the absolute cluster :pk: that is FR180 (I swear they are trying to make it impossible to get there!) I did a quick out n back to the lake. There were two people camped at the bottom and I think they were the guys Jackie and Lee spotted the day before. Just a guess though.

Seriously though FR180 is so bad it's really indescribable. High clearance can make it without 4wd when it's dry, but many of the rutted puddles are deep and steep. It took me nearly an hour to go the 4 miles and I don't drive with a feather pedal. It was mostly dry today, but in wet weather, I wouldn't recommend it for anybody except the biggest trucks. Plenty of plastic bumpers and other car parts and remnants of homemade traction devices remain from where others have obviously gotten stuck before.

That said, there was a forrester and an escape at the trailhead, so it can be done.

HAZ - Event
So I contacted everyone signed up for this trip, and we agreed to postpone it a week.

As it turns out, the trip went terrible, first of all the backpacking part was way too easy, down the short trail to a creekside camp. Then there was the horrible scenery, the old growth pines, the pristine creek with cool water, expansive meadows filled with wildflowers, who wants to put up with that? Then there is the fact that there is a pretty decent trail up and down the canyon, with access routes at Trail 180 and Larson Ridge. And it didn't even rain on me on Saturday. Glad all you folks avoided signing up.

Took a quick trip up and back just to get a route posted on HAZ and some photo documentation. The end of the road is definitely high-clearance. Not sure what it looks like farther up.

Super fun overnight in an amazing location. The drive in was an adventure with as much as 6 inches of snow. All the roads up there are completely destroyed. The rim road will be an absolute mess until it gets graded again. The car wash attendent is gonna hate me tomorrow. :y:

By the time we got to the trailhead, we had dropped enough elevation that the snow was patchy, and the hike went a bit slow due to the snow and mud. But camp was set up quickly and we tried our luck at fishing, but the midday light wasn't good so we headed downstream to the lake. There are two creek crossings but we managed both without getting wet. A few hours later, 9L and I tried our luck with the fish again, and this time luck was on our side. 9L struck first, and I followed up just a few minutes later! Woot! Dinner! :y:

In the morning we headed upstream and I investigated the Larson Ridge route that ALMAL had inquired about. Nice to know of alternative access point. Plenty of camp sites down here, and the first couple miles south was reminiscent of the Houston Brothers trail. I should come back here more often :)

I've never been to Chevelon Canyon lake so I whipped up a route using the HAZ route manger. I made a route from the intersection of FR99(AKA Wildcat RD) and SR260.
I went down FR99 to FR170 to FR90. The roads are very well marked up to the FR9517/90 turn. Then the signs are gone. FR90 is a like a peninsula. There are numerous roads that go to campsites, vistas or just nowhere.

The first stop for me was an awesome vista of Chevelon Canyon Lake / creek. I then went to where the topos showed a trail going down to the lake from the south/east side. I was skeptical if this trail existed or what shape it would be it.

The route took me right to an old little used trail that was not for the casually hiker. The trail is steep and has a couple of loose dirt sections. There was a couple of cairns the closer you got to the lake. I did a little exploring down at the lake. The lake was a lot longer and deeper than I expected. I thought I could cross over to the other side and check out the south west trail. I found a good lunch and started to eat. A couple of minutes later it started to rain. I was worried about the climb out, so packed up fast and headed out. I took a more rocky way out to avoid the slick trail. Near the top the trail got slick and I started to slide a bit. I’m glad I got out before it got worse.

Once on top, it stated to rain harder and I explored around looking for another good lunch spot. Second lunch was at a spot overlooking Weimer point.

The last item view spot on my agenda was almost across a ravine from the first view spot. I tried to cut across the ravine in a couple of spots, but none of them seem safe enough. so I keep on doubling back until I found one that was OK(which was back to back ravines).
The other side was a smaller peninsula had at least 2 loops and a couple of abandoned jeep roads. The view was of the first view spot of the hike. By now the rain started up again and didn't stop. As I got closer to the jeep, it started to rain harder :( .

I’m fascinated by the Chevelon Canyon / Lake area. I think I’ll be back to explore the canyon some more, possibly the telephone ridge trail.

Did my 1st backpack trip of this year. Wanted to maybe get some fly-fishing in as well, so I found this hike on here and decided this would be the one. What a workout, it is only about 1.25 miles one way, but it is almost straight down and then back up again. I just recently lost about 35 lbs. in the past couple months and thought I was getting in shape. This hike showed me how much more I had to go.
The trail looks like it had been cleared and all the down trees cut away. I know previous triplogs talked about climbing under downed trees. The actual trail was quite nice. The trek to the bottom was well worth it, the bottom was spectacular and even though the water level was really low, there was plenty of water. Midday was very warm so there was a lot of looking for shaded areas to throw the line in. No luck on the fish, but it is always fun trying. There were quite a few primitive fire ring camping spots all down stream. If I had more time, would like to have gone all the way to Chevelon lake. Will definitely be doing this one again, just maybe a little earlier in the year, to beat the heat.
