Planned hike up Marble North shifted slightly... Luster and Clint had never hiked Slab... and with Fossil Rock added in, too nice to pass up. Great weather! Exit included checking out the ridge cuts to the west... finally dropping down a nice game trail back into Marble North right at the forks with Spur. Massive load of rock hauled out! Nice outing. Slab is one of the best intermediate level hikes out there!

First in the Fall Series for the more difficult Canyon hikes... Ross, Mary, Lu. 7 hour hike shifted to 9 hours with one of the hikers sick. Still, great route...great day. We need to go back up when Mary is not feeling the acrophobic dynamic so acutely... she did not get to enjoy the moments as much as she could. One of my favorite routes... I enjoy the side hill, cliff top above the canyon up to the Tongue.

3rd in the Progressive Canyon Series... this with a bit more gain... ten hikers. The group was not as like minded... some too fast, some too slow...not the best blend. And, jury duty and foot injury has me closing out the year back out of shape! Interesting...

Ross, Dj showed up for this interesting cut... we looped up and out, then down N3/N2 for some variety. Nice bit of morning...

Day began stormy, cleared into a great hiking day. Five hikers for the planned "fossil search" up in the Cactus Cliffs.

Lots of talk about how to appropriately describe the hikes I schedule through Meetup... sounds as if my routes tend to be a bit more difficult than most. Every hike tends to be too much for one or more of the hikers... balanced by giving them exceptional experiences?

Today I should have logged AEG laps before the late starting main hike. Cold, brash north winds whipped in mid afternoon... along with rain... freezing rain! It cleared after awhile, but made for parka wrapped hiking for a few hours.

Trail work was cut short; every little bit helps.

Long, easier laps tomorrow? Meeting with the author of the new Lincoln National Forest Trail Guide later in the afternoon... might be interesting.

Third week of 5,000' days begins!

John and Marty over from El Paso... Summer and Terri and DJ from Alamo... DJ's first canyon! I hiked down and out with him... the rest headed up N2 to check it out. I headed over to the "A" to haul the metal cable up to Leah's Lair...

my normal solo exploratory day was joined by Timmy and Juarisca ( that's what can happen when hikes are posted on the Meetup Calendar!)... so, I headed up N4 to see what it would be like without all the over growth. It was nice!

Once up the cut, we tramped up and around the Cactus Cliffs... where the pace slowed to a crawl with an over focus on fossil formations in the cliffs.

Day was nice... enjoyed the off trail ramble up and around to Ortega Peak... including checking out the overhanging rock (Terri's Terrace?)

To round out their day, we dropped into Leah's Lair... with daylight illuminating to the very bottom... and, checking out that deeper area where Jim had speculated last week about the possibility of the Fissure continuing on down... we discovered: the Fissure continues on down! There is a cave taking off and down from the apparent bottom of the cut! Need to go back with rope and lights... who knew? Timmy wants it named after him...?... Timmy's Tomb... Timmy's Trench... Timmy's Trough? We need to get down into it to check out the features. Then we can name it.

Next... to the Bluffs for a trip through those caves... got photos of them popping out high up the west side of the Bluff. Nice.

Finished up with a downclimb into the Gold Mine Pit...

Overall... a very nice day! And, there was some exploration...

1st trip
Mondays are scheduled for Exploratory outings... with an initial emphasis on the Marble Canyon drainages. I'm hitting it all... those cuts and hills I've done; the cuts and hills I've never been in/on before.

Today was a new one... and it turned out to be a goody!

The second entry side canyon off of Marble Canyon North, it orients as N4 (fourth canyon along the Marble North drainage... N1, N2, N3 all oriented up the first entry cut). N4, Slab Canyon, gives us a new play ground.. very different than most of the surrounding area cuts.

After a short scramble, the canyon takes a turn to the right... and a turn in characteristic. It is basically a steeply tilted slab of bedrock. There is little technical challenge. Occasionally there is a short interruption where rocks and soil accumulated, allowing dense overgrowth...but, after three hours of path making, that should no longer be a problem!

My trip time was 9 hours and 32 minutes... my moving time: 4 hours 34 minutes! Lopping Shears were carried for pack weight augmented training.

As I neared the blockade of waterfall formation... which from above I'd estimated to be in the 70-80' range... I wondered how much time I'd lose finding a route up through the cliffs. I recalled noting back then a tree top poking up above the upper ledge... and wondering about climbing down the tree... and as I scaled the terraces below the falls I angled to the tree... to discover an easy cleft ascent! No time lost at all!

Sitting atop the falls I noticed my camera yelling at me that I was about to use up my internal memory space. I wasted ten minutes trying to find the switch to turn off internal memory... then popped the camera open... to note there was no disk in place...?

I'd opened it earlier to switch out the battery... and now I had to wonder if there was a disk sitting far below near the mouth of the canyon... or had I left it in the computer when I was loading pics on the day before...?

Fortunately, I had a spare disk... so, I would not miss out on documenting this maiden hike.

The upper portion of the canyon was open... more like ridge hiking... and then it was ridge hiking as I made my way across to the "A" trail. I figured I top out Ortega Peak. I called Jim; we agreed to meet on top.

We met and hiked down together... Jim adding on to his best year AEG... me scoring yet another canyon to document. Looks like I'll close out the year far short of the 100 new trails I'd hoped to hike and write about. I guess I'm over 60... plus there were five or six I hiked but failed to write up... lost the notes on those, so they'll get done again in 2104. I may try for a new hike each week in 2014... that should make for a fun year.

Now... big bowl of cottage cheese... chopped up fresh pineapple. That's a good recovery meal... right.

oh... disk was in my computer!

great day out!
