Hiked a nearly 8 mile loop in this area from the Power Road TH. I can never keep track of the names of the trails in this area. I tried to keep it kind of level but I still got over 1K AEG. The climbs kind of sneak up on you. Lots of bikers early, no one at all the last 3.5 miles. Then when I got back there were hikers going out starting after 10am.

Only interesting thing to see were the 2 coyotes checking out the bikers helping out another biker who's bike was broken. they seemed to be hovering over them, like they sensed a woundedness. When they spotted me getting pics of them, they got spooked and took off.

Seemed kind of hot at first after sitting in the AC, but then the temperature was actually very mild for late June in Phoenix. The low humidity has been a big plus lately.

Following a year that I mountain biked 56%/44% over hiking (& all-time high of 2,505 miles biking),
I kind of doubted that during this year, when my age will top 3/4 of a century (which my knees and hips keep me aware of), that I would be able to keep up that pace so maybe I'd swing toward a 50/50 bike/hike ratio.

But wouldn't you know it, I started off on the wrong foot (not on foot at all?) by biking before my first hike of the year. Even then, for my first hike of the year, it was all I could do to get motivated enough that I drove only as far as the absolute closest trailhead.

From the Bush Highway Trailhead (Bush Hwy & Granite Reef Dam Road) I crossed the road, dropped into the wash along Road Runner Trail(?), turned onto Ridge Trail #59, followed it until heading cross-country to hit a few rocky overlooks, then onto Saddle Trail #51 for a while, more off-trail, a bit on Saguaro Trail #50 before a final off-trail bee-line back to the TH. Not much more than an abbreviated aimless wandering hike, but at least I got my first miles in.

I put together an almost 10-mile loop. I thought I’d downloaded my intended the route to my GPS, but NOOO … Fudge. Fiddlestix. I wasn’t going to drive 35 miles home, so I decided to wing it.

The trails wre great for hiking, but beyond my minimal biking capabilities: The minor wash crossings, though not high, were steep & slippery.

There are trails spider-webbed all over the Hawes area. Most of the intersections are signed in some manner, though not always clearly. If you lose your way, just head in the general direction of Red Mountain: Eventually, you will hit the highway.

The high-end Las Sendas community is tight against a 300 ft. hill. I “remembered” the trail continuing straight, but instead it turned north, to curl around the hill, which confused me. I wasn’t lost, I just thought I’d somehow wandered off the route I failed to load onto my GPS. All along Las Sendas, there are concrete posts marking buried fiber optic cable.

I split left onto Trail #51, then soon after split right onto Magic Mountain Trail. Though only ⅓ mile long, MMT’s boulders were the highlight of my day.

The “far” end of Magic Mountain Trail is anchored on Trail #52. Rather than continue as intended, and make more wrong turns, I decided to start working my way back towards Bush Highway. Several times, I considered taking a shortcut down a wash, towards Red Mountain, but stuck to the endlessly MTB-optimized twisting trails instead.

At Saguaro Trail #50, I turned left, southwest, downhill. Besides Red Mountain, another good landmark is the levee on the west side of the highway, at the base of the butte: That’s where the trailhead is. Unfortunately, Trail #50 kept dragging me southwest, rather than turning towards the levee.

At an unnamed bike repair station, I was unsure which way to go. I headed right, towards Red Mountain. I didn’t want to hike to the river, so after a bit I turned southwest towards the levee. Thankfully, the switchbacks were over, and I was done with my loop 15 minutes and less than a mile later.

Been meaning to hike the newly built Boulderdash Trail over by Hawes and finally got to it. Hiked it downhill to make it easier, although the steep drops can be dicey with the scree. My general thought is that it's probably safer to hike these types of trails uphill since they're built more for the bikers and you can see them when they're coming. It's pretty much impossible for a biker to go uphill on this trail. I only encountered 2 bikers on this trail coming downhill behind me and was able to get out of their way. The trail is fun to hike, but you have to be careful on the steep drops.

Started from the Power Rd/Bush Hwy TH and took the Ridge, Saddle and Saguaro Trails over to the Lower Gidro and hiked up that to get to the top of the Boulderdash, then hiked back mostly the same route. Only saw 4 or 5 bikers until the last mile, then a lot of hikers and bikers. Early start in the dark makes for less crowded trails for most of the hike, especially at the higher elevations.

I started from the Power Road TH early at 6am in the dark and did a loop counter clockwise. I just wanted to get some mileage in quick before getting ready for Xmas Eve and this fits the bill nicely being so close to home. Getting the early start in the dark reduced the amount of overall traffic for a while, especially bikers. Although I did see one biker farther ahead of me with a headlamp.

The fog made for some nice pictures. It seemed to clear up a little after a couple of hours and then a second wave seemed to roll in. I was expecting to have sunny skies but the entire time it was overcast and foggy. The last couple of miles the amount of foot traffic increased. It was chilly at the start but remained cool the entire time. Higher up there were some breezes.

Had some chores to do on Saturday so I moved the hike this weekend to Sunday. Decided on the Hawes area because it's the closest drive. Parked at the new MT trailhead along the transition from Power Road to the Bush Highway and did a big clockwise loop, finishing with a little spur to get my mileage up to 10. At the start I hiked the Mo Ridge Trail, which is one of the new official ones being built in the master plan.

Found an unmarked trail but I decided to follow it for this hike since I was so far in on my loop and I wasn't sure how much it would add. marked it with a waypoint for another day. Also hiked up to a knob that has a social trail on it from previous use.

Didn't see too many people on the trails this week as compared to 2 weeks ago. the forecast was for temps in the 90s, but all morning it was pretty nice and breezy at times. Saw more bikers but by the end there seemed to be more hikers. Nice to get a respectable AEG in with the mild climbs throughout this area. Not flat, but not too strenuous for an easy Sunday morning hike.

Since Deborah was in town, I wanted to continue a new tradition we started last year (San Tans) which was to do a hike together, and Duke too. Since last year I've wanted to give this trail system a spin... well not a spin on a bike but in my hiking shoes. Linda was game and she let me pick the start time of 9AM. Kelly was going to join us but her plane was late. Kelly would have liked this hike plus I wanted her to hook up with my friend Debbie since they have running in common.

Finding a parking area was a bit of a challenge so I PMed @adenium (thank you) and he gave us four possibilities so we picked the one just to the east of Granite Reef Rec area. There were quite a few cars at this lot and we encountered this group fairly early on during our hike. We would see another large group and then about half-dozen other hikers and about the same number of bike riders, so not bad. The tread was very nice and it proved to be a roller coaster hike which I like. We had a couple good hills mixed in.

The scenery was typical desert that teased us with several good views of Red Mountain :) . We came upon an area with two roads and a blowout to the north that was a mystery that we eventually figured out was part of the canal system; exactly what part we're not positive about... The hike got particularly interesting, on the south side, after we got past the first row of very nice homes and headed east and then north and then east back down by another set of houses before making the final turn north. The rockery and steeper mountains to our east were impressive. Linda labeled our hike description appropriately as the trail really starts some serious meandering from area to area.

The trail erosion efforts were interesting; something I've not seen before. I'll post a picture.
We stopped for a little break before finishing off the last 1/2 or so of the hike. From here we encountered some steeper parts of the hike going down into the narrow wash as the trail was a little slippery from the loose granite. We checked out a wounded saguaro and a couple very green, very little plants. We saw some cool rock formations and Red Mountain would pop up into view here and there.

As we finished off the last leg that took you up to a saddle and side of a mountain we were treated to good views of the river and then were rewarded with a mine area on the Mineshaft Trail. The quartz in this area was very pretty. And fortunately, Linda's curiosity struck again as we went to the top of the hill above the mine and got a spectacular treat with some great 360 views. It was a clear day in almost every direction too. You get a couple long switchbacks to get you down the mountain with just a couple slippery areas. The views to the river kept us entertained too📷.

We enjoyed our Huckleberry Wheat Lager before going our separate ways. It was nippy and windy in the morning to start and in less then a couple miles later it warmed enough to take off my jacket. It was nice for the rest of the hike with only a slight breeze as we did the interior and then got windy again once we got to the north high part of the hike.

WATCH: 8.5 miles with a starting temp of 47.7 and 40% humidity (high point 1876, low point 1257) Avg bpm 127, max 167 with 33% at zone 3, 52% at zone 2 and 12% at zone 1 burning 1604 calories finishing at 1:15PM

Angela invited me to join her and her friend Deborah for a hike out at Hawes. I was up for anything she suggested, especially some new to me trails, so this was a good loop.

We parked at the north end of the loop, crossed the road, and headed southwest on Saguaro Trail. Some small ups and downs, which was the them for most of the loop, and some nice views of Red Mountain. Most of the junctions seemed to be signed, but having a track was helpful since trails seem to head in every direction.

We made our way south on Granite Trail, then Ridge Trail, before getting onto Hawes Trail. Took that south, then east along the edge of the neighborhood. Near the southeast corned of the loop, we turned onto Magic Mtn Trail. This one headed west for a bit before turning north. There were some steep spots on this one, but they were short. There were also some nice sections through a wash, and some interesting rock formations--similar to the north end of the McDowells.

We turned north on Saddle Trail and followed that to Saguaro Trail (again) at the north end of the loop, taking that west to finish out. That section of Saguaro was also nice as it followed a ridge with some good views in all directions, a few mines, and lots of quartz. Saguaro also had a few steep spots coming off the ridge, with the decomposed granite trying to make you lose your footing.

Nice day for this one, especially with the breeze and high clouds. We didn't see many hikers (mostly just two groups in the first half) nor many bikers, but I'm sure weekends are a mess of bikes.

We thought we would check out this area. It is certainly used heavily by mountain bikers. Got there a little early, and one car was there. Another couple of vehicles with bikes pulled in while we were waiting for dawn to break. Friday morning? Usually we will have the trail to ourselves this early on a weekday.

Our plan was to go down the Wild Horse trail, but as we were started we had three different bikers pass us. We thought the Twisted sister trail looked less used, so we backtracked a little to the intersection and went on that. Now we were winging it. Lucky enough we ran across a sign/map at the end of the Twisted Sister leg, and mapped out a balloon hike. The map did have a barcode you can scan for the latest mountain bike trails. I don't have a smart phone, but I took a photo, and when I got home it leads to this website:
https://www.trailforks.com/region/hawes ... -111.66429

All the latest updates are here, and It looks like we could have made this an actual loop if we were to hit the Mine trail followed by the Riverview trail. Riverview trail wasn't on the map on the trail, so we ended up retracing the Twisted Sister trail.

The trails here are extensively used by mountain bikers, ran into probably a dozen of bikers over the course of the hike. As stated in the Coon Bluff hike, this area looks to be a good night hike area; trails are easy to follow, so I think I'll wait until spring/summer to explore more in this area at night; not one I would recommend during the day, to many bikers.

I had some errands to run today, so I picked hiking at the closest trails to my house. I picked a route to hike sections of trail that I hadn't hike in well over 10 years.

I started a figure 8 circuit with the Mineshaft Trail from the parking area east of Granite Reef on the Bush Highway. At the top there, I took the Saguaro Trail all the way down to the Hawes Trail and headed east again. There is a little unofficial trail that goes to the top of Peak 1970. It's pretty steep and loose towards the top, so I decided to bushwhack my way down. Looks like there were signs that others had done the same, the route was pretty easy to walk, not too loose, steep, or overgrown anywhere. at the end of the Hawes I took the Saddle Trail north, then cut to the west on the Upper Ridge and Ridge Trails, and back on the Granite with where I started. At that point I had only done 8 miles, so I went out and back on the Riverview Trail to get my mileage up to 10. The riverview trail has so much ups and downs on it, it's more work than it seems at first.

Looking forward to the new trails they'll be adding this area in the coming year or so.

It's been a few years since we hiked the Hawes Trails north of Las Sendas. Not much has changed, except the trails are obviously getting lots of use by the mountain bikers, and one of my favorite cactus' growth seems to have been stunted. Great day to get out!

On Sunday, I attempted to follow the Crazy Horse Loop. I used the route of that name posted by hikerdw to this site, but hikingaz2 has posted a similar route with the same name.

I didn't do especially well at following it, which is partly the reason for my mileage ending up higher than what they've posted. I also attempted to stay on the bike trails as much as possible, though in some cases, I stayed on them too long causing me to get seriously off route for a while.

Some of the trails that I hiked - when I did hike trails - can't be found (yet) on HAZ. Trailforks has them; the names that I use here will be mostly those shown on that site.

Starting from the Bulldog Canyon Trailhead, I crossed the road and took the NRA Access Trail. This was the first spot where I deviated from hikerdw's route. His route either followed the wash or some other less defined trail. I continued on the NRA Access Trail until I came to a fork. The right fork continues to be the NRA Access Trail. The left fork is called L'Alpe d'Huez. Okay, so I got confused here. I continued on the NRA Access Trail for a time and realized that I was going the wrong way. I considered going on and doing the loop in reverse, but decided that I wanted the steep and gnarly stuff out of the way early so that I wouldn't be doing it in late afternoon / early evening. I'm glad I made this choice. So...

Returning to the fork, I (correctly, this time) took the left fork which is the L'Alpe d'Huez Trail. As I proceeded up this trail, I found some rocks acting as a blocker for another trail which appeared (according to my GPS watch) to be where the route I was (sometimes) following joined L'Alpe d'Huez. I continued on L'Alpe d'Huez (which turns into the Goat Trail) until the ridge and even started over the ridge. My GPS watch told me that I was off route - I continued a bit further and discovered that I was really off route. I backtracked at that point and found another trail, this one for Peak 2972 - Usery Mountains, which is the name given by this site (HAZ).

That section of the trail leading to Peak 2972 was steeper, looser, and occasionally hard to follow. I ended up on the peak. To the south, I saw some flags on the slightly lower Peak 2959. As I backtracked off the peak, it wasn't clear to me how to continue the Crazy Horse Loop since the terrain here was quite steep. I continued to backtrack with the tentative plan to return to the intersection of Goat and L'Alpe d'Huez. But, as I backtracked, I sort of got lost doing so and ended up working my way (according to my GPS watch) back to the track for the descent for the Crazy Horse Trail. I continued working my way down the mountain and got off route again when I came across an indistinct path which led me back to the bike trail. As I continued a short ways further on this, my watch informed me that I was back on route again. As I continued on this trail, I encountered a sign which said "Upper Gidro Pass Tr No 66". Arrows pointing to the left (which was the way that I was going) were labeled "Cactus Garden" and "Hawes". The right pointing arrows were labeled "Goat" and "Alpe d'Hawez". I can't find any individual trail named "Gidro Pass" on Trailforks, though there is a loop (comprised of a bunch of trails) of that name. Also, "Alpe d'Hawez" seems like a better name than the one listed at Trailforks. In any case, I think I was on what Trailforks calls "Cactus Garden" at this point.

I stayed on Cactus Garden / Gidro Pass longer than I should have. It's a very nice and easy to follow trail. I passed the turnoff for resumption for the Crazy Horse Loop thinking that Cactus Garden / Gidro Pass might go to roughly the same place. As I continued, however, it became clear that it was taking me south when I needed to be heading WNW. I see now that taking Cactus Garden / Gidro Pass could have "worked", but it would have resulted in a much longer hike than I wanted to do on Sunday. This time, instead of backtracking, I simply headed downhill and made my way back to the track shown by my watch. This led me to a canyon with a sandy wash and some easy down-climbs. It was very pleasant.

The wash / canyon eventually led me to the Saddle Trail #51 (listed simply as the Saddle Trail on Trailforks). I took the Saddle Trail north until it ran into the Saguaro Trail. Heading east (and then north) on the Saguaro Trail brought me to an intersection with Twisted Sister. The sign at this intersection suggested that I might be able to see a mine if I continued on the Saguaro Trail, so I did this for roughly 1/4 mile which led me to the top of another hill. (Actually, it wasn't clear from the sign that this was still the Saguaro Trail. It seemed that it might have been the "Mine Trail" at that point.) The day was wearing on, so I turned around and eventually headed east and then north on Twisted Sister.

Twisted Sister intersected with Wild Horse, which I took east. I ended up taking a (slight) shortcut shown on Trailforks as Jumping Jacks Cut. This led to the NRA Access Trail, which I took back to the trailhead.

I saw only three other hikers - they were heading the other direction on Wild Horse. They told me that they had parked a car at each end so they only had to do it one way. I saw a lot of mountain bikers; they were all courteous and a few even stopped to let me pass.

I had fun on this hike - I enjoyed both the off trail and on trail portions of it. The Wild Horse Trail was better than I was expecting it to be. Also, the off-trail portions of it were good practice for learning how to use my new GPS watch.

Beautiful morning for a trail run through the Hawes Trails. I call this one the winged dragon due to the shape of the route on the map. Several mountain bikers out. Saw a roadrunner.

I've done some trail runs out here, but first time on a MB. Went with my son. My bike is 20+ years old, so definitely not the best equipment. That, and a little lack of experience, resulted in a pretty good spill about half way through. A few raspberries and a bruised up right thumb left me giving "Scout handshakes" at church the next day, but otherwise, we had a fun time. Probably will opt for some more gentle trails next time, like the trails on the south side of Pass Mountain in Usery Park.

First time on the Hawes system. In fact I only heard about it a week ago. I parked at the TH for the Hawes trail #52, right after the canal. Started at 6:35 and by 7:00 I had already seen 3 bikers. So my first thought was oh no what have I selected. Took the Hawes trail (and Microwave Tower Trail) up to the Microwave towers. On the way back I turned onto a side trail thinking it was the Secret Trail. About a mile in ran into a nice lady who told me that it wasn't the Secret, rather the Cactus Garden and that it didn't join up again with the rest of the trail system. But that a hundred yards ahead there was a great view. So I continued on for the great view and got a couple pictures. Interesting that the Cactus Garden goes about 80 feet higher than the Microwave tower area. Then retraced my steps back to the Hawes.

I found the Magic Mountain Trail which led me to the Upper Secret and then the Secret Trail. Then onto the Saddle which led to the Saguaro. Then took the Ridge Trail and back to the Hawes.

It was fairly hot out there with the sun beating down. Not many people being a Monday. I think my main concern with the Hawes is that it follows just about in the back yards of houses much of the way. Nice houses but I'd rather be away from houses.

I was online checking out the new mapped sections of the Maricopa Trail and saw that over at Usery Mt. there's a trail from the Bulldog TH along Usery Pass Road. From the west side of the road, the trail heads up the east side of Usery Mt. and connects to the Hawes Pass Trail system. I took that trail up there, and then took the Saddle, Saguaro and Twisted Sister and Wild Horse Trails back to the car, making for a 13.3 mile loop.

As the unnamed trail ascends up towards Usery Mt., the views are very nice. Four Peaks, the Mazzies and Mt. Ord all had fresh snow from the previous day's storm, making the scenery even nicer. At one point near the top, even Weaver's Needle is visible. The clouds make for some interesting lighting as well. As I got to the high point, the McDowells were all shaded, but Red Mountain was brightly lit up from a small patch of sun. I highly recommend this section of the trail, either as an out and back, or doing the big loop like I did.

the weather was mostly cool all day, depending on if the sun was blocked by the clouds. Saw quite a few bikers, mostly on the lower trails, as well as a couple hikers and a couple trail runners.

Towards the end of the hike, I got sidetracked on some new trails that are being built for the mountain bikers. There's a bunch of dirt ramps for them to make leaps over, some look pretty gnarly. I passed a crew of 4 guys digging out a new trail. They had a 6 pack of SanTan Devils Ale on the ground nearby, so it seems unlikely that they were doing official Forest Service work.
