Hangover loop with Merry Go Round addition this time. We saw the window insta spot on the way back down but didn’t stop for that one. Views at the top seemed like they were better.

decided to hit this up on the way out of town after a chilly night at pine flat. I was gonna do west fork but woke up to oak creek canyon filled with smoke from the prescribed burn in Flagstaff. Oh well, this hike could never get old for me. Love it!

Rounded up 3 hikers from Meetup. Parking full so parked across the street on the other side of the gate. This is the trail on the right side of the TH.

Munds Wagon Trail runs adjacent to Schnebly Hill Rd. Hangover trail is the most adventurous section and took the longest. Pay attention to RF. Cow Pies is short and connects to the Jeep rd.

Will have to return to drive Schnebly and do a different variation of this outing.

This was our second straight weekend in Sedona, and the plan today was the "Merry Hangover" route that combines the Hangover Loop with an out-and-back past Merry Go Round. There was a lot of smoke around Verde Valley as we drove up I-17, and we wondered how bad the air quality would be in Sedona, but it was clear when we got closer to town. Munds Wagon Trailhead was already full at 8AM, but we parked along Schnebly Hill Road, just inside the gate.

As we got started, I realized this was my sixth time hiking all or part of the Hangover Loop, but this would be the first time going counterclockwise. The scenery was every bit as good as I remembered, and the constant noise of tourists and jeep traffic along Schnebly Hill Road was just about as annoying as I remembered. We headed for the Merry Go Round first, and the popular window and platform along the edge of the cliff were covered with people, so we didn't stop.

The route continued north on Munds Wagon and was supposed to connect with Schenbly Hill Trail #158, but it was closed due to trail washouts, so we returned on Munds Wagon. I hadn't been up to the top of the Merry Go Round before, so we went up there to check it out. TboneKathy didn't go all the way up, but reaching the top wasn't too bad except for a narrow ledge or two. Great views from the top (and lots of graffiti carved into the rock :(), and it was nice to look down on the tourists below, both literally and figuratively. [ youtube video ]

We ate a snack near the top and battled gnats that left us covered in bites the next day. We started down just as a jeep full of tourists showed up, so our timing was perfect. The platform and window below were miraculously empty when we passed by, so we went out there for some pictures with the stunning backdrop, but I didn't go down into the window this time.

From there, we backtracked to Cow Pies to continue the loop. Once again (or still), great views along Mitten Ridge with the impressive red cliffs, and the landscape near the saddle looks almost Martian. On the other side of the saddle, we continued past the namesake overhangs and enjoyed the views of Wilson Mountain. Around the corner, Elephant Arch and came into view, and we made our way down the steep slickrock. That was my first time going down that section instead of up, but the grip on the slickrock is very solid.

Next up was the arch...the approach looked steeper than I remembered from a few years ago, but the good traction on the rock made it easier than it looked. TboneKathy didn't like the steepness near the top and stopped a little short of the arch, and I went up and spent some time at the arch and in the window/cave nearby. That whole formation is covered in small arches and interesting erosion, and the views were excellent.

Elephant Arch: [ youtube video ]
Window: [ youtube video ]

Once we got back down the slope, we stopped for a late lunch and then completed the loop on Hangover/Munds Wagon. When we were away from Schnebly Hill Road, we only saw a handful of people all day, and the weather was very comfortable. I usually try to avoid repeating hikes--especially one I've done so many times--but this one has some of the best views in Sedona and doesn't get old.

Kelly is helping me do some prep hikes for my big outing this summer.  We hadn't done this for 7 years and decided it would be a good one to do again.  We made the drive north and just like several years ago, we blew by the turn ](*,) for Sedona but realized it right away, unlike the last time when it was several miles before we realized it.  We finally made it to the TH and geared up.  It was a little warmer than I would have liked but we did get a breeze that picked up later in the day.

We headed out on Munds Wagon Trail and I was surprised that we saw as many people as we did until after we took the first junction for the Hangover Trail.  There were some nice wildflowers along the way including what I thought was Hollyhock but I now believe was Palmer's Penstemon.  The Penstemons were almost a grove in a couple places.  We were quite surprised to see some water in the drainages... and running water at that.  You cross the drainage many times during this hike before and after you come down from the Hangover.  We enjoyed checking out the water :)

Kelly suggested we do the loop clockwise as we had not done it this way.  I was a tad reluctant as we didn't know the elevation gain but we went for it.  This turned out to be the perfect choice; especially after coming down that relentless hill from Schnebly Road later.  The Hangover Trail in this area was in nice shape and you had good views along the way too.  We did run into a bicycle rider here.  It was interesting to see how the trail wrapped around the base of the mountain and takes you up fairly easily to the western saddle.  I had downloaded DixieFlyer's route just in case we wanted to take a shot at the arches/windows above us to the west. I told Kelly to go ahead and I'd wait but she suggested I come along so I mumbled something and followed her.

Well after several stabs at different routes to get up a steep layer of bedrock, we ended up turning back.  We did spot a bike rider across the way that pondered going straight down the opposite mountainside to the saddle.  I can't even imagine.  We never did see him complete the task.  Kelly figured we could probably get up this one section with good effort but getting back down might be a little dicey. I did get a few good pictures of her attempt.  In fact, getting back down to the saddle was slippery and we had to do a little rumpaging.

Once back at the saddle on flat bedrock we headed straight up a couple more levels to the designated trail (on bedrock) and enjoyed our hike to the north side as the views kept us in awe.  Oh ya, this next part... now I remember, it is incredibly vertical and a tad tricky in spots to get up once you have to veer away from something of a trail.  Thank goodness for the white marks that helped guide us up and back south.  I had my heavy day pack on so this was a tad challenging : rambo : .

We finally made it to the last level at the base of the top tier.  And now it was time to head east, hugging the side of the mountain.  The trail is dicey in sections too but nothing too bad.  It is amazing how they fit this trail in here.  The overhang sections are so impressive and today there were water seeps, moss and some plants growing right out of the walls. And oddly enough, I got hit by a rock coming off the hangover above me. I didn't see Kelly again until I got to the area where you cross below the saddle.  I did quite a bit of filming on my way and would occasionally stop to inhale the views.  I finally got to where I could see Kelly on the east side below the saddle. We had one quick steep section before we arrived at the top of the saddle.  For some reason, my mouth got really dry while hiking between the saddles; such an odd thing.

We found a nice restaurant, I mean some comfortable rocks :D , to sit on for lunch time.  We were only half-way done with the hike but at least it was downhill from here.  We headed west across the saddle and then down a layer heading east.  However, as Kelly was running point pretty far ahead she came back to say this wasn't the way.  So now we were on the hunt for the white marks which were pretty much on this west side as the trail headed down the layers to get to a bigger layer where all the big loose rocks were hanging out.  We pretty much stayed on this layer still enjoying the scenery and a lizard that looked turquoise in this light.  I dropped my phone for the second time today, UGH! There were a couple sharp ups and downs as we finally reached the Cow Pies Trail.  While the Cow Pies Trail is short, it packs a nice 360 view.

It was a little tricky finding the white marks to follow the trail across this huge area of bedrock, before making it into the trees and to the road.  We noticed how intensely green the trees seemed on the tall hillsides to our east; I think because they had just leafed out in some cases. We crossed the road and did a zig when we should have zagged to get on the Munds Wagon Trail for the last couple miles back to the trailhead.  The sun was warm so I was glad for the breeze and the occasional shade created by the pine trees as we made our way back to the creek.  The trail seems to be on a constant down so I was glad Kelly had made the choice to try it clockwise.  I had forgotten how relentless the trail would have been on the way up.

We made it to the creek where once again we found running water and some deep pools.  I asked Kelly for one more break before finishing off the last few miles.  We found a great setting including a nice big rock to sit on with a pool in front of us and the red rocks beyond.  Just past the junction with Hangover west, we were more in the grassy area and some more flora.  We still crossed the creek drainage and the road a few times before that last little hill where we found a beautiful smattering of blooming prickly pear cactus.  It was starting to get a bit warmer now so I was glad when we could see the trailhead in the not too far distance.

We enjoyed our beers and peanuts before heading south, but not before asking google for a place for lunch.  We lucked out and ate at the replacement of the Blue Moon.  We had great food and I had a stellar margarita.  The chairs are also very comfortable here at Colt Grill BBQ and Spirits.

I took quite a few movies and if you've done this Loop, you know why.  It's really a great hike.  Once again, I haven't finished reviewing the videos.

angela was looking for a prep hike for her summer travels
we did this hike seven years ago
had planned to do it while sue was here, before she broke her arm :o
got going around 0900 on munds wagon trail
a few hikers out and a few pink jeeps
went clockwise on the loop this time and soon arrived at our first saddle
wonderful views of wilson mountain, thunder mountain, chimney rock and more
we made an attempt to climb up to the arches but got kind of sketched out about a third of the way up
maybe not the best route or the fact that i haven't been climbing in three years
hangover is such a great trail, getting up under the overhang and the overhang itself
took a snack break at the second saddle and began our descent, eventually taking cow pies trail back to munds wagon trail
a lot of water in the drainage, still flowing over the bedrock in places
finished up and had beer and root beer at the trailhead
late lunch at a new place: colt grill, bbq & spirits
the brisket tacos were delicious
nice to be back in sedona
great hike, fun day - thanks, angela!

Hangover hike with the Harem! I usually drive up Schnebly Hill road to Cow Pies trailhead, but the road condition was so bad, that we about 2 miles past the end of the pavement and jumped on Munds there to do the loop. Nice not having to hike all the way back to Cow Pies at the end. Lots of hikers out this morning, no bikers on the trails. Sun was super hot by lunch time. Gas prices were $3.75 in Oak Creek, incredible!

Plan A (phantom ranch) was interrupted by the weather/arizona department of transportation's closure of I-17/I-40, so I picked this one for plan B. I had long wanted to do this hike, and thought it would be cool with some snow both on the ground and in the forecast.

Did the lollipop loop from Munds Wagon Trailhead. We went up Cow Pies to connect with Hangover. On Hangover we had the benefit of being the first people on the trail for the day, and got to walk on totally fresh snow. Icicles on the side of the trail were really cool. There was also a ~12 foot section of broken up ice slabs.

When we got back to the South side of the loop, we were hiking into pretty strong wind and snow. This section I would have had trouble following without a map.

Really good hike.

From the end of pavement to the Cow Pies Trailhead it took me about 30 minutes by Jeep. I first came out here last week to check out the area, but didn't have time to hike far because of my schedule. This time, on the last day of 2020, I brought my wife and we hiked about 0.6 miles into the Cow Pies trail, reached the intersection of the Hangover trail, at which point my wife correctly concluded that she could not handle the cliffs and precarious heights to go any further. She is particularly height-averse. I figure the average experienced hiker would probably be okay to handle the Hangover section. Her issue with heights is serious enough that she immediately experiences dizziness and physically cannot handle it. The Cow Pies section is easy.

So I had to make do with one more "just a taste" of this beautiful area. Everything about it is spectacular. The "cow pies" themselves are super cool and my wife couldn't stop taking pictures. I ventured out alone onto the Hangover Trail for maybe 0.2 miles or so, and am salivating for a return trip to finish it. The advantage of venturing out alone for that short jaunt was getting a long-distance selfie as attached.

I did also bring our white fluffy rescue dog Lexi, who is a 15 pound bichon-poodle mix. She did great but we've purchased a "dog backpack" to carry her if she and her tiny legs get tired. At 1.2 miles round trip she was in heaven the entire time though. But just a heads up that Sedona is famous for people bringing their dogs and not keeping them leashed in hiking areas. There is zero enforcement of leash laws, and very poor signage educating the public that leashes are mandatory. (Leashes may not be mandatory in the Coconino National Forest. They are mandatory on Sedona city park land. Either way, expect to deal with unleashed dogs on trails).

We did this loop clockwise. A decent amount of mountain bikers out there for a Monday, but an enjoyable loop. I guess I wasn't sure what to expect, but far exceeded what I thought it was going to be.

i saw @DixieFlyer route for the munds wagon/merry go round/hangover route and though it looked great.

it certainly was

though the parking lot was relatively crowded i saw very few people all day and had perfect weather. climbing up merry go round is easy and the views are outstanding! took munds wagon up to its end, then poked around on schnebly hill road a bit taking in some viewpoints.

of course the highlight was cow pies/hangover which is kind of mindblowing at times. climbed up to the arch, which is a very worthwhile side trip indeed.

fantastic route, thanks for posting it! :app: :y:

The Munds Wagon-Cowpies-Hangover loop is one of my favorite Sedona hikes, and I figured that this would be a good time to go do this one again.

We added in a side-trip to Merry-Go-Round Rock, and to Elephant Arch and the other arches on the "Window". Merry-Go-Round Rock is an easy climb, although it is class 3 in a couple of places. Climbing up to the arches is a little more difficult, but isn't too bad. There are great views up there, along with some fun climbs depending on how adventurous you are.

It was a little warm, but we got an early start and it turned out to be a great day for a hike. I was a little concerned that there might be some smoke from the Horse Fire, but that turned out not to be an issue at all.

I decided to take advantage of a nice day and go hike on one of my favorite Sedona trails: the Hangover Trail.

We started from the Huckaby TH and took the Munds Wagon Trail from the TH. We continued on the Munds Wagon Trail until we got to Merry Go Round Rock, and of course we climbed up on top of the rock. That was my first trip to this rock, and it was a fun, fairly easy climb. After getting back down off of the rock, we continued on to the Munds Wagon TH.

Then we took the Munds Wagon Trail back to the Cowpies Trail, and took it to the Hangover Trail. Then we took the Hangover Trail up to near Mittens Ridge and took a snack break to enjoy the scenery. After eating, we went to a small cave and went in for a few minutes. Then we continued on around on the Hangover Trail -- this is my favorite section of the trail. It was such a nice day that we decided to climb up to Elephant Arch and the other arches/windows. We spent a fair amount of time there doing some rock climbing and enjoying the awesome views. Then we continued on the Hangover Trail until we got back to the Munds Wagon Trail, and followed the trail back to the TH.

After the hike we stopped off for lunch at Cafe José in Sedona. This was my first time in a sit down restaurant since this virus frenzy started.

The first hike of my 50s. I didn't get a chance to do an epic memorable last hike of my 40s like I did 10 years ago for my 30s. so I decided to make the first hike of my 50s a nice one. I've been hiking locally in Phoenix the last few months since I got burned out doing long drives. I did a lot of hikes in July, but they were mostly kind of urban hikes in PA. It was beyond time to get in the car and take a road trip. Wally was in as well.

We started out on the Margs Draw Trail, and did a few others, but the main feature of this hike was the Hangover Trail without a doubt. The views along this trail are the best. There are a few steep sections, but they're pretty short. Just enough effort to make it a respectable hike. How this trail isn't considered one of the better hikes to do in Sedona is beyond me. At least I haven't heard many people mention it, or seen enough posts on HAZ.

Starting from so far south was mainly to add some mileage. After Margs Draw we took the Munds Wagon Trail and intended to do the Hangover/Cowpie loop. I looked at the topo and it seemed like getting the climb out of the way early was a good option, so we did the loop clockwise. the big climbs are on the west end of the loop, and they give some of the best views. The trail is mainly marked by spray painted chevrons, so there's that. Some sections of the trail are level while the ground is at a steep slope, which isn't great for middle aged ankles. Which is why there is ibuprofen. Vitamin IB.

the Hangover Trail heads over a saddle between two buttes, and then continues eastward. At some point this apparently becomes the Cowpies Trail, but I didn't the sign which stated this transition. We stopped for lunch along this section and saw a mountain biker coming the other way. we still wonder how he made it down the steep slick rock section of the western end of the loop. The last time I was in this area was in 2005 when I did a shuttle hike on the Jacks Canyon Trail with my friend Ted. It was nice to be able to recognize the area from then and remembering everything very well. doesn't seem like I did that hike 14 years ago.

Once we were back on the Munds Wagon Trail, it was pretty easy. Had some shade and a gradual downhill grade. There were some sections of potato sized rocks to negotiate, but it wasn't too bad. by the time we finished it was a bit toasty, but not as bad as its been in the valley lately.

Saw more jeeps and 4x4s along Schnebly Hill Road than we saw hikers on the trail. also saw more helicopters flying around the buttes and mountains than I would have preferred, but crowds and money will do that. Noticed the helicopters more when we were up at the top.

Nice to get out for a day/road trip. Sedona rarely disappoints.

Did the Hangover Loop counterclockwise hitting Cow Pies first. Figured this way I would do most of the walking next to the road before the jeep tours started for the day. Started the hike at 6, and this ended up being the case: none on the way in, four on the way out. Apart from them and a pair of trail runners on the road I did not see anyone during the whole loop.

The lack of traffic was astonishing to me because having now completed Hangover, I have to agree it is a masterpiece. Hangover, and the loop in general, has everything you want in a Sedona hike. I feel like with most Sedona hikes there is a sacrifice made between crowds and views. It was a nice change of pace having world class scenery without a crowded trail and the noise that comes with it.

Tracie and I did this hike earlier in the week, but we were not able to locate the cave near the Mitten Ridge saddle, so we wanted to go back and try again. I took a few friends out there with me this time, so we had a small group.

We had better luck this time and we were able to find the cave and crawl into it. The opening is small, and once you were in you had to crawl in the dusty ground for a short distance. Then the cave opened up into a small room that is 8 feet to 9 feet high, and I'd guess 15 feet X 25 feet. It's not something that you see everyday on a hike!

We also went up to Window Rock again and explored a couple of the small arches that are beyond Elephant Arch. Two people in the group climbed up to the top of Window Rock, but that climb had more exposure than I wanted today so I did not climb up to the top of the rock.

It has been a long time since I have hiked on the Hangover Trail, and Tracie had never been, so we decided to head up to the red rock country of Sedona. I also wanted to check out Elephant Arch and the other arches above the Hangover Trail, so we checked that box also.

We started and ended the hike at the Huckaby TH. Schnebly Hill Road was paved all the way to the TH, although the road is not in pristine condition. In fact, the pavement in the TH parking lot was better than the road.

We decided to hike all the way on the Munds Wagon Trail to the Munds Wagon TH. This added about 2.5 miles and 550' of elevation gain to the hike as opposed to just doing the Cow Pies-Hangover Loop. The views were nice on the ascent up to the TH, so it was worth it.

We did the loop CCW, so on the way back down we took the Cow Pies Trail up to the Hangover Trail. In spite of Cow Pies odoriferous name, there is nothing to step on that will ruin your day!

The Hangover Trail was the highlight of the hike. It was fun to hike on and there were some awesome views along the view. It was cool on the west side of Mitten Ridge seeing the cliffs literally hang over the trail.

While on Mitten Ridge, before making our way on the west side of the ridge, I tried unsuccessfully to locate a sinkhole that some others talked about in their triplogs. I reviewing my route, I must have walked right past the sinkhole -- thankfully I did not fall in! From the saddle atop Mitten Ridge, we went for a short distance on the Damifino Trail, and then bushwhacked up to the cliff walls in our futile search for the sinkhole.

I have read that there is an interesting bit of history behind the name of the Damifino Trail. Back in the day, a survey crew was in the area, and one surveyer asked another what the name of the canyon was. The second surveyer's respone was "damn if I know". So now you know how the trail acquired its name!

On the initial part of the hike, I had spotted Elephant Arch and 3 other arches high above us. I believe that some folks refer to this as Window Rock. On the way back on the Hangover Trail, we went off trail and climbed up to Elephant Arch. I would have gone over to the other 3 smaller arches but the wind was blowing like crazy, so we decided to save the other arches for another day.

On the way out I wound up hiking quite a bit on Schebly Hill Rd. instead of staying on the Munds Wagon Trail. I did not make that mistake on the way back, which was fortunate since there were lots of jeeps on the jeep road in the afternoon.

imho, this hike is a keeper!

There was not much in the way of wildflowers. I saw a few lupines and a couple of cool claret cup cactus, but that was about it.

Fantastic day to head up to Sedona and sneak in a hike before the rains came in with Yolanda, Carey, Mel, and Trish. Drove up the bumpy Schnebly Hill road to Cow Pies trailhead, high clearance required (bottomed out the jeep a couple of time on the way back down). Breathtaking views. Spotted a group of hikers heading up to Window Rock, which is now on my wish list. Lots of traffic on Schnebly Hill road, an endless line of pink jeep tours and side by sides. Running water in the creek aside of the road.

We were looking for a Sedona hike while back in Arizona to visit family for Thanksgiving and settled on this one. We followed the route described by @daytripper in his 11-4-2018 triplog. Can't believe we never did this hike while living in AZ. Ranks right up there with Oak Creek Canyon as my favorite Sedona hike. We started at the Huckaby trailhead and followed the Munds Wagon Trail up to the intersection with the Cow Pies trail. Took that short link to the Hangover trail and followed it back down to where it hooks up with the Munds Wagon trail and then followed it back to the parking lot. Bluebird weather today. At this time of year if you're starting mid-morning I think this counter-clockwise loop is the way to go as it gives you great lighting for pictures the entire route. Definitely not a hike to do when it's hot but on this day it was mid 40s when we started around 9:30 which was great. Not hot but not really cold either - perfect hiking weather. Great views all along the hike. Still a little fall color left. We clocked in at a little over 8 miles and had we not stopped to take so many pictures we would have made better time. We enjoyed our leisurely pace and soaked in all the views. Definitely would recommend this hike!
