It cost a total of $17 to obtain 100% Progress of the San Tan Mtn Reg Park - Trails
My synopsis is they aren't worth much more than that. It's also lame that climbing isn't allowed at Owl's Head anymore.

After two months of work stress and various sicknesses it was past due to get back outside and try to do a trail run. Plus eldest kid wanted to attend a birthday party that was at the park (they went horseback riding), so yeah, timelines worked well. Started at a leisurely 2pm, love this winter weather running. Saw a few people on San Tan trail, fewer on Malpais. The sandy washes along Malpais were damp and very cold, should have worn a long-sleeve. Run felt great and kid enjoyed the horses, so all in all a great afternoon.

Another run! Got my bike fixed up, so this time I got the extra treat of riding my bike to & from Phillips TH (adds ~4m either way).

Started at 5pm to a very empty park. Took San Tan all the way down, connected w/ Malpais, then came back on Hedgehog. Had running vest w/ 1L (half water, half electrolytes) and some blocks. Purposefully controlled my pace, especially on the uphills. Long shadows were creeping along the entire stretch of wash on Malpais, which was v appreciated. Even with the higher temps, this run went way better than last week's attempt. Heartrate never went over 180 and the cramps waited for the final mile to show up. No walking breaks, just slow, steady jogging the entire time. Between the exposure, hills, rocks, and sandy washes, this is one of the more challenging <10 mile loops I've done, and really happy with how this outing worked out.

Whiskey Row in five weeks. Let's do this. : rambo :

Headed out shortly after noon and really lucked out, with a nearby stormcloud blocking most of the sun during the outing. First 5 miles was textbook, took San Tan all the way down to Malpais south start, clocked a steady 12' pace and played leapfrog with a biker. Hit the wall while climbing out of the wash, later found out that my heart was between 170-180 for that first hour with the darn heat & humidity combo. Struggle bus from this point on, alternated between walking and running to the end, leg cramps were visibly twitching :sk: Was able to (very slowly) jog from the top of Hedgehog to the parking lot, just in time to drive to kid's school and 30s after they were released.

Trails were in great shape, as usual, no visible washout damage or anything.

Put together Rock Peak Wash Trail, Malpais Trail, and parts of San Tan Trail for a 8.1 mile loop starting at the Rock Peak trailhead.

Night Hike! - The Constellations
Arrived at about 1am and started hike. Decided to use the Canon EF 28-300mm instead of the Rokinon fish eye lens. The Rokion is a fast lens at about f2. Comparing this night hike photos with last one, you can see the difference. the Rokion lens is fixed focal length, while the canon can go from 28-300mm for a good zoom. Noticed the canon seems to work pretty well for representing what you typically will see in the night sky, but doesn't capture the scenery very well. A number of constellations were place well in relation to the landscape, so I decide to focus on them.

Moon didn't rise till just before dawn, so this was a darker hike than my typical night hikes that I generally do around the full moon.

Didn't see a single person the whole hike, but that shouldn't be to suppressing :)

Pretty sure I spotted an Arizona Grey fox just before getting to the Trailhead parking. Not much bigger than a large cat with a tail just about as long as the rest of it's body.

It’s getting harder and harder to knock out “get ur done” areas. This is one of the last “local” areas that I needed to complete. Got out to the TH around 6am. Still plenty dark out and unlike South Mountain the city lights don’t shed that much light on the trail system. Could have used a headlamp for the first half hour, but didn’t have one :( . Started off with a very slow jog without mishap. Luckily the San Tan is about as broad and smooth as you could wish for starting from the TH area. Did the loop clockwise. Starting on the San Tan and took that out to the Malpais trail. Really enjoy the Malpais Trail. Lot of people think of this as a “wash” trail, and a good portion of it is. But the sand, at least today, was about solid as you could hope for and it always has some of the best views in the San Tan area. After the wash the Malpais becomes a nice single track as it weaves it way back to the San Tan. This is probably one of the more isolated trails out there....didn’t see a soul the entire time I was out there. Back on the San Tan, I took it for a short distance to connect to the Hedgehog. This is kind of a shortcut. Fun little trail that took me over a saddle and reconnected back to the San Tan. Took the San Tan back to the TH. Good loop with minimal elevation gain. No wildlife. Beautiful moonrise! Just an orange sliver as it crested the horizon.

We have recently moved to the Power Ranch area and I decided to head over to San Tan Park to check out the trails. I have hiked the Goldmine Trail and Dynamite Trail before, but I have never gone on any of the other trails at the park.

I was browsing triplogs and routes and came across HikerDW’s route: San Tan RP Outside Loop

That looked intriguing and despite the fact that it was going to be hot one on Sunday, I left the house at 5am to give it a try. I was hoping to get a nice sunrise shot, but the mountain blocked the great colors. I did manage to get a few in, but only after I headed down the saddle and got into the flats. It would have been better to start at the visitor center for that.

The Goldmine Trail is what it is, it’s a nice hike up and give you a nice workout. I tried to climb up the ridgeline to get a better angle, but I could not get around the end mountain.

The Goldmine Trail connects to the San Tan Trail. This trail started off ho-hum. Lots of people hiking, biking and horseback riding, even at 6am. As I passed the visitor center, the trail greatly improved. It’s really quite scenic the farther down you go. I found the cool crested saguaro I saw in others triplogs, it was right off the trail. Very nice.

I continued on to the Malpais Trail. Every triplog I read said it was a bit of a slog as most of the trail is in or around the wash. That did slow me down a little and my miscalculation about that ended up costing me later on in the hike.

I loved the scenery along this trail as well. It was a little up and down and as I turned back to head back to the San Tan Trail, I missed the turn off and ended up on a little wash. I finally figured out I was in the wrong location and hiked up the hill to rejoin the trail.

Once back on the San Tan, it was also a little up and down all the way to the Dynamite Trail. I liked this section as well. The Dynamite Trail was an easy climb up and then down back to the parking lot.

The good: I was pleasantly surprised by the landscape on the southern and western sections of this loop. I am 15 minutes away from here, so it’s nice to know there’s a neat place to hike nearby

The bad: I overestimated by hiking speeds and ended up hiking in the heat. I am a bad heat hiker and it made for a very uncomfortable hike the last 4 miles. I was moving even slower than I normally move. I am very happy I did not underestimate my water needs as I needed every drop of the 6L I packed along.

Did the biggest loop the park offers:

San Tan south to Malpais near Rock Peak
Malpais loop back to San Tan
San Tan north to Dynamite
Dynamite north to Goldmine
Goldmine north to trailhead, then south to Littleleaf with a break at the graves
Littleleaf to the end

Malpais Hills looks like a cool ridgeline to explore

I was oncall this week so had to stay within cell coverage so this regional park loop was the choice. Not a bad little loop hike, typical for a regional park hike I would say. Here is my short description of each trail we hiked.

Goldmine Trail: The most elevation change of all the trails. Double track for the majority of the trail. Nice views.

San Tan Trail: This trail seems to get a lot of traffic. A combination of single and double track. Very well groomed. The southeast section of the trail was my favorite.

Malpasis Trail: If you want any amount of solitude your hike has to include this trail. Good condition but you can tell it gets the least amount of foot/wheel/hoof traffic. At least half of the trail is through washes so expect loose conditions. Views are limited since you are hiking mostly in a wash. My favorite in the park.

Dynamite Trail: Very nice trail and seems to get a lot of traffic. Some nice gradual elevation change which provided some nice views.

This park is close to the house so I will definitely be back to finish the couple cross trails.

I did this hike clockwise. San Tan - Malpais - San Tan - Gold Mine - to start of San Tan. The San Tan seems to be routed out of the wash now. The Malpais is in a wash for over half the trail. The Gold Mine part of this loop is the easy part, not the mountain. The mileage I came up with was from the park map. The aeg was just a number I through out there. :D

Went South on San Tan Trail, then took the Malpais Trail and came back on Moonlight Trail. Mainly interested in getting a closer look at the Malpais hills. Moderately scenic in this area.

Got back to the car just as the storm moved in; driving home through it was pretty cool :D

I did this loop in addition to the San Tan, and this part was the slowest moving part. Lots of sand in the wash at the bottom of Goldmine Mountain. The views of the mountain are fantastic, and some of the largest Saguro Cacti I have ever seen.

left the loop trail on south end near the rock peak and bushwhacked up the canyon to the top of the Malapais. Very nice little vally on the top. Then found the real way up/down which is a notch not too far off the trail. Couple interesting peaks to explore next time
