Didn't have much of a plan, just wanted to get out of the house and try out the legs. Decided to do Guthrie Mountain with some side trips if I felt like it.

Got going a little before 10am, air felt a little moist but the thin clouds hanging around to the east were promising from a thunderstorm-risk standpoint. At the saddle just above the TH, I accidently took a social trail, figured it probably goes up Green Mountain, and decided to get that out of the way early. Pretty straightforward getting to the top: go up until you gain the ridge, then follow the ridge up. Wasn't sure where the true summit was, couldn't find a marker - from the top the south end of the summit looked higher, but from Guthrie the north end looked higher. Might have been perspective, because looking at topo maps later it seems it is indeed the south end.

Had the thought of trying to go down the east ridge to the Bear saddle, but couldn't see the whole way down so decided against it. That also probably would've been a terrible idea judging from the view from Guthrie.

Anyways, went back down to GM trail, then to Bear saddle, and up Guthrie Mtn trail. GM trail is burned more or less from the first saddle all the way to the Brush Corral Shortcut. After that, it was more or less still green in a lot of places.

Guthrie Mountain trail wasn't terribly hard to follow, overgrown in a few places but pretty straightforward. Some nice fir forest on the north side of the summit.

On the way back, decided to check out Maverick Spring trail, since it was right there. Mostly burned, but not too hard to follow. Got to a drainage with a small seep in it; my map showed the trail continues another hundred feet or so along the contour, but this was just a fern thicket, so I decided that would be silly. My map just said "Maverick Spring" without a point, and the words covered like a 500 foot long stretch, so I decided not to look for it. Looking at other maps later, it seems it's actually straight down the drainage from where the track disappears into the ferns. At any rate, I don't think there's any reason this trail really needs to exist now that the forest is burned to a crisp.

Right when I got back to the GM trail, someone said my name, which caught me off guard at first, but made more sense when I saw that it was a friend in Tucson on his way back down to Hitchcock. We stopped and chatted for awhile, then continued on our separate ways.

By this time, clouds had started filling in over the mountains, so I started getting a little worried about weather. Also, the muscle that problems a few weeks ago started acting up, so it was definitely strained. So I bailed on doing the Brush Corral loop (actually went 100 feet or so down before I decided to bail). Started getting some sprinkles before the other Brush Corral junction.

Fun time, while a lot of the north slopes are burned, the views are still nice, and Green Mountain trail is still in pretty good shape.

Originally planned a big group hiking from Mt. Lemmon to Sabino Canyon, but most of those wanting to do it canceled, so I chose this instead. I had Green Mountain on my bucket list for a while as one of Warren's 100 Classic Arizona Hikes, and honestly you can do a full Lemmon to the bottom hike through the trail system that is fairly close to Mt. Lemmon Highway (Aspen-Marshall Gulch-Sunset-Butterfly-Kellogg-Incinerator Ridge-Green-Bug Spring-Bug Spring Connector-Soldier, or instead of Soldier, -Sycamore Canyon-Bear Canyon to Sabino).

We decided to start at Bigelow Trailhead and took Bigelow to Kellogg, then Incinerator Ridge to Green to Bug Spring to Bug Spring Trailhead. We started out in the lower 50s and ended up around 90 degrees. On the way down we hit Leopold Point and the basically nonexistent trail up to Green Mountain Summit.

Loved the wildlife today. On the drive up Lemmon Highway I saw a gila monster on the side of the road. At the Bigelow Trailhead there were a couple of mule deer, and on the trail we ran into several bluejays, a couple of horned toads, a hummingbird (surprised to see that one buzzing around!) and several different kinds of squirrels, including one with long, furry ears.

One of our team had to pull off at the little parking turnoff across the road from Bear Canyon picnic area, but the other two of us made it to the bottom.

I only rarely hike in southern Arizona, because getting any place cool and shady is a 3+ hour drive, and I would like to get home the day I leave. So would my wife. But as much as I like exploring canyons on the Mogollon Rim, I can only do it so often without getting bored. Eventually, I came up with a plan to hike Green Mountain Trail #21 (top to bottom), Maverick Spring Trail #704 and, possibly, Guthrie Mountain Trail #704A.

Not many cars on the Catalina Highway on a Thursday morning. Really, the only folks we saw on the way up were bicyclists on their way down — watch out for them apexing corners! — and a Pima County jail trustee highway cleanup crew. If I had to serve jail time, I couldn’t imagine a better place to do it! The hills of Mt. Lemmon were covered in green due to all the recent monsoon rain. 🚴🏻‍♂️

My normal hike day is Friday, but I was hiking on Thursday, because this former paratrooper figures the best way to celebrate National Airborne Day is with a “ruck march”. And beer. 🍺

I made the Green Mountain summit in 30 minutes. The unsigned, but obvious, use trail was steep, but not as slippery as reported. My hiking poles came in handy, but you could get by without them: Just use trees & boulders for hand holds or foot brakes. On top was some sort of permanent antenna. I believe a relay station. Being a former Army radio operator, I raised a toast to the antenna. The beer was Efes, which we drank by the Humvee-load in Kurdistan, after the Gulf War. On the way back down Green Mountain, I found a great OP 100 yds. northeast of the use trail. Check out the attached GPS route for its location. I could see Redington Pass, and east all the way across the San Pedro River valley to the Galiuro Mountains.

Back on Green Mountain Trail #21, I headed east, down from the saddle. Just a couple hundred yards on, there was an unsigned split in the trail. I went right. I chose wisely. Just past the unsigned intersection were two boulders defaced with blue graffiti. Not just unnecessary directional arrows either. 🎃

Maverick Springs Trail #704 had more shade than Green Mountain Trail #21. The trail was in good condition, but I stopped short of Maverick Springs, when it dead ended in a tangle of dense vegetation. I didn’t bring a machete, so back uphill I went.

Back at the upright boulders, I headed from Bear Saddle down upper Bear Canyon. I stayed on Green Mountain Trail #21, but where it crossed the floor of Bear Canyon, that looked like it would be the better option. The floor of Bear Canyon seemed to be easy travel.

I never saw any bear scat, but I regularly clicked my hiking poles together to ward off any bears that might be in Bear Canyon. The only critters I saw all day were a small horny toad on Green Mountain and a hummingbird on its slope. 🐻

The hummingbird was feeding on some orange flowers that I was photographing. There was great #flowerporn all along Green Mountain Trail #21. I saw at least a dozen species, in a wide variety of colors: Red, yellow, white, purple, orange, etc. The flowers tended to occur in species-specific bunches, rather than mixed along the trail. Plus, I saw several varities of mushroom, including a stunning red cap mushroom. Or, as I like to think of it, a “maroon beret mushhroom”. 😁

The hike was not long, nor the AEG excessive, but for the next 48 hours I had trouble getting up from chairs, down stairs, or out of bed, I was so sore. Wierd. 🚑

Did Green Mountain and some other little things around there. Beautiful, verdant afternoon. I rested up top at one of the fire rings, and as I stood up I saw a little bear just as he disappeared to the other side of the hill.

Just a short, hour long hike while traveling the Catalina Highway. Second trip to the summit for me, and a fun off trail jaunt. The hike description describes the route well, steep, slippery, and wise to bring hiking poles. I reached the top quickly, but took baby steps coming down so as not to become a human toboggan on the steep stuff. Great views from the rocky overlooks. Checked out some of the damage from the Burro Fire below and on Guthrie Peak. So glad that the Burro was stopped before it could reach the Catalina pine country!

My intent was to hike the official Green Mountain trail and possibly do Guthrie Peak. Started chugging up what appeared to be a trail and kept going up and up. Hit a saddle, looked over and it appeared a summit of some sort was off to my right. Hit the top of the peak and then bushwhacked and scrambled back down to the parking lot. Really had no idea what summit I was on until I uploaded my route on my computer.

Not quite the hike I intended to do, but a nice introduction to Mt Lemmon hiking. The views from the top were spectacular.

Afterwards made a stop to Windy Point to check out some of my old climbing haunts. Very weird to go back to places I haven't been to in 30 years.

Made a second variation out of the monster loop posted by AZhiker456 on Feb 27, which included a bushwhack summiting of Green Mountain (and Guthrie) from the General HItchcock CG. Frank and I noticed last week that the ridge to Green from Bear Saddle looked doable and dreamed of including Guthrie on the way down. However, bushwhacking up & down that ridge took too much out of us; plus I had to be back home by 4:30 pm to watch the Ky game with a friend. The nice trail up to Bear Saddle was uneventful, but about 1/4 mile up the ridge, the going gets pretty brushy and boulderie. About 3/4 the way up, you have to go left to avoid cliffing out, and it takes a while. The key is reaching the little saddle at about 7600 feet. Otherwise you could lose a lot of the elevation you just gained. You may note that we got off a little left (north) coming down and had to climb back to the ridge. We were headed toward the Maverick Spring cutoff from Green Mtn trail, but realized it in time. It's pretty hard to see where you're going along most of the ridge.

One of the best parts of the day was meeting a couple of ham radio people at the top. They had come up from Catalina Hwy, and strung an antenna in the trees (see pics) for reaching far-away places using Morse Code. He contacted people from the Pacific and Spain while we were there, changing the band width(?) of his antenna by sliding a wire back and forth. You sure meet some interesting people hiking in the mountains.

Anyway, we put off Guthrie for a later day and intend to do the AZhiker456 bushwhack southerly loop back to the CG. Looks interesting.

Frank and I got the idea for this hike from AZhiker456, who did a somewhat bigger loop including Guthrie Mtn a week or so back. We were looking for something with some bushwhacking about mid-mountain Catalinas. We got an early start (about 9:00 a.m.), for me anyway and it was absolutely blue-bird day. The bushwhack up from the General Hitchcock CG is for real. Lots of steep climbing on loose soil and rocks, but not much inthe way of thorny bushes. There is fun scramble to the top of a beautiful crag about 2/3 way up. We stayed in '456 footprints for much of the way. We did not include Maverick Spring and at the Bear Saddle decided we had enough and came down the Bear Canyon Trail to the CG. It was my first time on the Green Mtn Trail. Very nice and well signed.

The only slightly disappointing thing about the whole loop is that there are no clear vistas from the top of Green Mtn because of all the big trees. However, if you come down (or go up) the north side, there is a great rock down a short ways with great eastern views. That side, although a clearer trail, is very steep also.

We hope to do the southern part of her loop (which includes Guthrie Mtn) in a week or two (before the snakes come out). Very few flowers, although they are coming out nicely lower on Catalina Hwy.

Like my last visit to the Catalinas, my return proved to be pretty “F*@#$g Epic!” as well. This time however, it’s safe to say that my hiking partner, Peter Medal, was responsible for making this one so awesome. This pic [http://hikearizona.com/photo=556981] of the planned routes says it all; [I wasn’t kidding that I’m a total rookie compared to Peter when it come to route planning, and I’m sure glad I thought to ask for his feedback a few days before I decided to give this a go]. To say he gave my route a total makeover would be an understatement. With endless boulder-hopping, sweet ridgeline traverses, and tons of peak bagging, [including both Green and Guthrie Mountains], his route gives a whole new meaning to the Green Mountain loop hike.

After a surprisingly peaceful night of car camping at Cypress, I kicked things off from the Lower Green Mountain TH, [located just passed the Cypress campground and just before General Hitchcock]. Although this loop can be done from other TH’s, it works very nicely if done counterclockwise, starting from the Lower Green Mountain TH. The ascent to Green Mountain is definitely the most exhausting part, so starting from the Lower Green Mountain TH allows for this portion to be completed in the beginning. The first mile give or take is a nice stroll along the Green Mountain Trail… then the REAL fun begins when you break from the trail and head for Green Mountain. Eager to get started with the bushwhack, I broke from the trail slightly earlier than planned; had I waited just a tad further, there would’ve been even more bouldering; luckily the terrain is very favorable and it worked out in the end.

That said, I got back on route just in time; toward the top there are some large rock crags to maneuver over / between, and the path I was on was brushing out very fast, while the other side of the rock crags was cliff. Fortunately I managed to get out from the brush without backtracking and rejoin the route just in time to experience some AWESOME stretches of bouldering. There were a couple of sections involving some climbs that may have even been Class 4; [and if not then definitely Class 3]. Toward the end of the boulder crags, there was this fun little unnamed peak, [which was a 30 second scramble to the top], that I bounded up. After that, the boulders really thin out as the ridgeline continues toward Green Mountain.

The final push to reach the summit of Green Mountain from the way I approached was surprisingly easy. The combination of animal routes, very widely spaced brush of the non-thorny variety, AND good gripping footing made it very pleasant. I did not find a summit register near the highpoint but did not spend much time looking either… while the views were awesome on the ascent and descent, views from the area of the highpoint were almost completely blocked, so I wanted to move on. Once on the summit, however, there is a full out route… to the point where it is more obvious and less overgrown that many official trails.

Heading off Green Mountain, I stopped at a large rock outcropping mid-way down. Being so close to the upper portion of the Green Mountain Trail, there were tons of well-beaten paths leading to the rock outcropping and back to the trail. After 3+ hours into the adventure, [over 2.5 of which was spent bushwhacking], the next 1.5 to 2 miles of trail was very welcome.

Next up on the itinerary was Guthrie Mountain; but first, I decided to hit up Maverick Springs. Instead of doing an out-and-back to/from Maverick Springs via the spur trail, I took the spur trail to the springs and then bushwhacked up this very sweet ridgeline and then up to the “route,” [which is extremely well-beaten in to the point of looking like a full out trail], to Guthrie Mountain. Compared to the off-trail I had done up to that point, the small scamper up some rock slabs to the summit of Guthrie was like a walk through the park but fun nonetheless. The register is located under a cairn that is situated on the backside of a boulder right at the highpoint. It goes back to 1998; and, as with many peaks in the area, is dominated with SAHC signings.

After Guthrie, it took me about another hour of ridge hopping, contouring and traversing before I finally reached the ‘ridgeline of awesomeness’, this long ridgeline with exceptional views that was tons of fun to traverse. There were several sections with large boulders, several mini-peaks, and even a faint route, all of which made for one awesome ridgeline experience.

Just before reaching the turn for my exit ridgeline, I finally saw [human] footprints, and there was even a cairn by the turn for my exit ridge; [the first I’d see of either since departing from the route leading to Guthrie Mountain]. Before heading down, I continued a short ways to check out another sweet viewpoint. The exit ridgeline literally dumped me right back out at the Lower Green Mountain TH. It was an amazing day and pretty awesome loop to say the least.

I left the house in Mesa, AZ at 5:00 am. My plan was to do "Summits on the Air" for Mount Lemmon, Mount Bigelow and Green Mountain. I got an early start due to a weather forecast of afternoon thunderstorms. As it turned out, it was raining on the way up, but once I started activating Mount Lemmon it stopped and there was no rain the rest of the day. Green Mountain was a really fun hike. I bushwhacked right up the west side of the mountain and went back down the north side. On the way down I jumped a coyote. I don't know who was more surprised.
