Private property still an issue. We chanced it but turned around when we heard people at the cabin. The alternative route is steep and adds some mileage.

Chance of lightning, albeit slight, so I got an early start around 445am hoping to summit Union, Moscow, and Davis in a semi-convoluted out and back.

Groom Creek was dark on the way up. Shady and dark all the way to Union, and mostly even all the way to Moscow. Crosscut hard to mistake. Two wooden posts mark the trail where it skirts away from under the power lines and straight up Spruce Ridge. Steep but good shape.

Isabella light started to come out. Such a beautiful trail. All three trails smooth, little rocky on Isabella higher up where it's steepest.

Slipped through Potato Patch before the neighborhood watch was up. Damn is it cold in that pocket of the mountains. Dandrea is pretty terrible but I guess it has its charms. Real dense forest. Better in the light. Tread is about as bad as they come.

Yankee Doodle the oak trees that looked downright burned a month or so ago have leafed-out, and the difference is pretty stark. Oak tunnel in place of Southern views.

Union shmunion. It's a tower peak. Views are good for what they are, pretty big if possible to ignore all the metal on top. LO unoccupied.

Yankee to Moscow ridge. Hadn't been south of Union on Yankee, but it just gets better and better. Easy game trail to the ridge and an obvious use trail to the summit. Sees more hikers than I thought. You can drive most of the way up with sweet enough wheels. Moscow was worth the effort and the ridge walk to it is pretty rad. Beware false summit.

Clouds were coming in by the time I was on Davis. Didn't hang around. Never ended up storming, so kind of a bummer. Waves of cumulous clouds rolled in by the time I was back on 307. Only saw one person, on the Isabella trail.

This is a go to area for us for when the giant Orb, makes thinks toasty in the valley. We purposefully started in the middle of the hike to 1) Stay away from the more popular Groom Creek TH and 2) start in the middle, so we could leave our additional water and food in the truck.

We were the first 2 vehicles in the small lot for our 7:30 start. We made our way through Peters Potato Patch, crossed the headwaters of the Hassayampa and took a new approach to gain Mt Davis. We both agreed that this was probably the approach we'd take in the future. Mt Davis is my favorite up here. Mainly because of the solitude and views.

Next, we made a mid route change and decided to hit up Moscow Peak and Peak 7675. These were 2 worthy additions and will be added to the rotation. Some very nice views from the top. The preferred route to the top, was the way we came down. From FR261 go due South, following the ridge line to make your climb.

Next up was Union since we were in the area. The tower was manned, but I don't think it was our buddy John. We saw our first people of the day here.

Back down to the Isabella TH, we had our SD lunch.

Isabella is a well groomed trail through some tall conifers. In sections one of the prettiest in the state.
We took this to the Groom Creek Loop and headed up to Spruce Mountain. This tower was also manned but I don't believe it was Suzy. The truck had Idaho plates.

To complete our loop, we used the Spruce Mountain Crosscut. After I splashed in Wolf Creek a bit, we completed the climb to meet back up with the Isabella Trail.

Good times in the PNF

Got the idea for this from a Karl and Kathy trip but I changed it slightly and started at Potato Patch. Big mistake there were 30 deadfall on Dandrea trail 285  About half were easy to step over or walk under but that still leaves 15 that slow you down a bit more. This trail needs @chumley and his chainsaw!

From the trailhead I went up Union then over to Moscow and Yankee Doodle. On the return I took a detour up Davis. Still a few patches of snow above 7500', saw 2 deer along the way. great day in the Bradshaws.

Decided to do some peaks in the Bradshaw Mountains driving up the eastside on FR 261 to saddle between Union and Moscow. Kind of cheating starting at 7000 feet but we wanted to get 4 peaks in without taking all day

We headed south down Yankee Doodle Trail for Yankee Doodle Peak first which is not much of a peak. Then went over to Moscow Peak and making it slightly more challenging headed up the south side. Nice peak on top and fits the designation of peak much better than Yankee.

Still some off trail heading north towards the next peak Mt Davis before hitting trail again. Took trail past Union most of the way up Davis except for the last 1/2 mile. Once on top there is rocky out crop on one side of the summit with great views. Took a lunch break enjoying best peak of the day.

On the way back to the vehicle we stopped by Mount Union and the tower. All quiet with tower shut down for the season and no other hikers on this day.

Drove into Prescott, with sun, despite predicted 75% chance of thunderstorms, to pick up the stylin' one. We headed down Walker Rd. and Big Bug Mesa to Five Corners, whence we started. It was the warmest 73° I can recall ever experiencing. Seriously unpleasant. My wife Bernie defended the fort against marauding cattle and squirrels while we climbed 900 ft. up FR 261, aka the Mount Union summit road, to Yankee Doodle Trail #284.

Clouds were already rolling in, thankfully moderating the apparent temp. Trail #284 was pleasantly shaded. After a couple hundred yards, we headed up a draw, towards a saddle, then traversed the highline to Moscow Peak itself -- today's main objective. Negotiating the highline was a stab-free breeze. The summit itself had fantastic views of Mount Tritle, Mount Union, Mount Davis, Big Bug Mesa and points south & west with which I am unfamiliar. Rain, thunder and lightning abounded in those surrounding areas, but we remained unmolested. Indeed, all we felt all day were a few sprinkles here and there. (Our garbage bag rain coats remained undeployed.)

We headed down the steeper and rockier, but still not bad, south slope of Moscow Peak to reconnect with Trail #284, which by that point is not so shadey anymore. There was more evidence of motorized traffic -- including a KTM fairing -- than foot traffic. We both slipped several times in the slippery, steep, deep v-shaped ruts.

Orofino Mine, just off the Senator Hwy., was anti-climactic. :| (I checked that usage on the Grammarist: grammarist.com/usag ... tic/ :D ). Just a few scraps of wood and metal: No shafts or adits, not even of the sealed-off variety. We headed north on FR 83, walking right past the Mastodon Mine. If there is anything there, it was not obvious enough to make us notice & stop.

When we reached the southern intersection of FR 83 and FR 9404, I was unsure which way to go. We ended up going left, towards the claim. Prescottstyle spotted a baby calf cub up a tree. Sweet. :y: Then he spotted mama. :o We basically diverted around the claim, which had several cabins. One had an open door, prompting me to make a Goldilocks joke. We soon rejoined FR 9404. Two OHVs passed us en route. (Bernie told us later Five Corners had seen quite a bit of motorized traffic.)

Dandrea Ranch was a pleasant area, but disappointing. We passed more baby calves -- there's always plenty of cattle in the area -- before arriving back at Five Corners. I was bushed. (I had barely slept the previous two nights.) Beer consumption ensued. On the way back up Big Bug Mesa Rd., we cornered two baby calf fawns next to a bluff, which mom was on top of, but the baby calf fawns could not climb. After some photos, I eased my way past.

Back in Walker, we encountered a lost transvestite. :-k (No, I am serious.) The guy driving looked a bit like Riff Raff. They were looking for Lynx Lake, and had gone left, skipping right past it. So, we had them follow us back up the road. Me & Janet ... I mean Bernie ... did not get home until after 8 p.m., by which time I was out on my feet. And you know what? I again barely slept a wink. :(

Fair number or Arizona Thistle, plus a few odd other species, mostly on the south slope of Mount Union or on Moscow Peak.
