Joined a meetup which showed 7 going. Where did the extra 20 come from? The opposite of the expected. Less than an hour to get there but knew I would have to extend this one out.

Coyote canyon was a unique setting. A lil over 4 miles into a proposed 7 miler, I bolted from the group. Didn't wish to repeat a couple of recent trails. This allowed me to explore a rarely used area.

I then took cowpoke trail back and formed a double loop. Some pretty scenery + a crested saguaro fairly early during this outing. Till next time...

Second hike of the day. After the McDowell Preserve (Shallmo) I drove over to Grantie Mountain TH to get a loop involving the Old Paint Wash Trail. TH is all complete. Beautiful. There are bathrooms, but I didn't see a drinking fountain (though I wasn't looking for one). I took the 136th Express out to Old Painf. Love 136th. It does a lot of twists and turns with some with a bunch of little ups and down along the way. I love, but my knee doesn't. Within a .5 mile of the TH it starting complaining to me. (There's not much worse than a "grumpy" knee). I think the quick up and down nature of the trail aggravated it. I was a little worried how I would handle the wash. But to my surprise the knee was happier with that terrain than with the 136th. I did take it slow and baby it, but that seemed to keep the knee happy. This was probably one of the best times to do the Old Paint Wash. With the rain and relatively cold weather the sandy soil was firmer than usual and it wasn't quite the slog that it probably would have been. This is a pretty major wash, (more in width than in depth. It never falls too much below the surrounding landscape), and there are a couple of threads (side washes) that my cause tour to get off trail. There is signage, though not quite as plentiful as I would have expected. Starting in the larger part of the wash should serve you well for the most part. The one exception is where the trail ends with the High Desert Trail. I was fortunate in that I saw some signage off to the side (along what I thought was a minor wash), I in investigated it and it turned out to be the Old Paint/High Desert juncture. To make matters more surprising, where the larger wash (in my opinion) crosses the High Desert Trail there is no signage. I can very easily see someone following this wash past it "defined" ending because there is no signage along this secondary wash. From the High Desert I took a medley of trails, all of them super sweet - among the best in the preserve - to get back to the TH. .......From High Desert, I took Renegade - Desperado - Coyote Canyon - Granite Mountain Loop - Saddlehorn - and Bootlegger Trails. Great trails (Old Paint). Decent run. Knee seemed a little happier after Old Paint (go figure) and allowed me to finish the run relatively pain free.

Side notes: When I did Old Paint I actually followed it .3 miles east to where it starts and then turned around and continued west. If I had studied the map more closely, I could have avoided this retracing of steps by taking the Cow Poke Trail east to where it connects to Old Paint. Also, at the end of Old Paint there is an Enviromental Monitoring Station. This was a nice "beacon". It caught my eye and and "encouraged" me to head in that direction to check it out. As it turned out, that was where Old Paint ended. Saw one chipmunk and that was it for wildlife. 15 bikers do 13 hikers.

Love these trails! :D

Short walk in the park.
Beautifully cool weather.
The park is busting with blooming flora.
Banana Yucca, Poppys, Brittlebush, Dichelostemma capitatum, Fiddleneck, Scorpionweed,Desert Chicory, Globemallow, Luppine, Woolly Daisy, Wiry Lotus, Chuparosa and even Microseris :), to name a few.

This is the best time of year to enjoy this park

With afternoon plans, the goal was to hit a few trails out there I had not been on.

There were no @Mazatzal or @Crzy4AZ sightings

Joined an organized hike from McDowell Sonoran Conservancy. 15 of us started from Granite Mountain TH and used various trails to get to Hawknest trail and back. On the way back we had one individual who had foot issues that slowed the whole group down. Meet up was called for 7:45 AM and we left at 8:10. Wish we could have started at 7 as it was warm the last hour or so.

Got out for a quick morning hike with a later kickoff for the Steelers, doing a few more trails I haven't hiked yet. Right at dawn I saw another saguaro with about 5 hawks sitting on the tops of all the arms.

I took the 136th St. Express Trail and finished of the last section of that I hadn't done, then did a figure 8 of the Dove Valley, Cowpoke and Old Paint Wash Trails, the took the Old Paint Wash Trail up to the Soapberry Wash Trail, Desperado Trail, then went east on the Coyote Canyon Trail, back to the Dove Valley Trail, and did a section of the Renegade Trail. I circled back taking the Renegade-Soapberry Wash connector to Soapberry, then got back on the Renegade eastward again to 136th St and back to the TH.

I was hoping to finish up a section of the Cholla Mtn Trail, but if I did that, it would have been over 15 miles, which is more than I wanted to do today. I also forgot to take my snacks, so I was ready to get home for lunch.

Went back up to the northern part of the McDowell Sonoran Preserve to hike more trails I haven't done before the start of football season. I started at the end of 136th St. again and hiked my way over to the Old Camp Trail and back again. I took 136th St. Express, Barb's Trail, Old Paint Wash Trail, High Desert Trail, Hawknest, Dove Valley, Stagecoach, Old Camp, Hawknest again, Stagecoach again, then Dove Valley all the way back to Barb's to 136th St. Express and back to my car.

I only saw 2 hikers very early and then a few bikers after that. I think for the last 3.5 hours of my hike I didn't see anyone. on the Dove Valley Trail right before the step over gate at the NW corner of the park there was a diamondback lying on the trail. I got some pics and walked around him, going off trail for a bit. He turned his head to look at me a bit as I inched closer to him, so I decided not to get him riled up for the sake of a nicer pic with him all coiled up.

There's a map and kiosk up in that NW corner of the park at the step over gate. Not sure if it's ok to park here, although it seems kind of remote to drive to.

Hiked over a half marathon this morning, total time 4 hours, 57 mins, with only 5 min, 31 seconds of total non-moving time. Not really even sore, I think the beastly hike Wally and I did last week on Mt. Lemmon helped with that.

I did it! Completed all the trails added to the Northern Section Map in the McDowell Sonoran Preserve dated August 2015. These are the trails that are North of Brown's, Cholla and Granite Mountains. They total about 30 miles, but that's not the point as you need to hike many miles just to get to them. Pretty sure Crzy4AZ has completed them also but is behind on her triplogs. That means HAZ'ers are 2 of the 4 hikers to complete ALL the trails in the preserve. I also think we are the only ones that hiked them all versus others who used their mountain bike on many of the trails.

We went to check out some of the new trails in the McDowell Preserve far north area (thanks to Crzy4AZ for posting the link to the updated map)

Hawksnest :next: Old Paint Wash :next: Soapberry :next: Coyote Canyon :next: Granite Mtn loop :next: Cow poke :next: Dove Valley :next: Barb’s :next: 136th St Express

Hazy views to the east, cleared a little but the mirror was still cloudy. We saw another water catchment 'tank', still had a little water.

The trails were pretty quiet - we saw a few bikers and 2 equestrians.

1st trip
Friday morning date hike - very unusual but Brad took the day off for our Memorial Day weekend trip to Pine/Strawberry. So it was his idea to get in a hike just the two of us before our trip. Was last day of Kindergarten for Caroline - what a great year it's been.

Picked this loop to explore Old Paint Wash trail in its entirety and to make sure I can legitimately say I'm still in "ATC" all trails club with the newest trails added March 2015. We had hiked Hawknest to what I thought was the end on Christmas Day and sure enough the signs do show it finishing at that bent and chopped saguaro. However - it will extend further west by mid-summer. Construction on Phase 2C trails is complete for the summer - but signs won't be up (and another new Northern region map) until mid-summer. So for now I've done all the signed portions of the "super north"-eastern region of the Preserve.

The 0.5 north/south segment between Hawknest and Old Paint Wash is called "dove valley extension" on our MSC patrol reporting page; however none of the maps call it that. We will see how it all sorts out. There's an old AZ Game and Fish water tank for game at OP11 marker with a bunch of older signs and barbed wire.

Old Paint Wash is not really a trail - it is a natural sandy wash. You have to trudge through it. Seems like bikers would hate it - might have to push bike through some parts of it. Dove Valley Trail runs parallel to it with multiple places you can connect between the two trails.

Took Cow Poke trail (the newly extended part) back to 136th Street Express and saw dozens of beautiful saguaro blooms. A few at eye level. Saguaro stands around Granite Mountain are the best in the Preserve. Now I've done all 6.7 miles of 136th Street Express.

Home for lunch - nap - packed for trip - got to cabin by 8pm. Very nice start to the weekend.
