Did Chumelys' 2016 route with some modification for camping. Followed this route last year but hit the area too late. This year I arrived a bit early. Bummer, maybe next time. Temps were in the low 60s for our hike and cooled to the low 40s overnight.

Side note - a 24' toy hauler was in the quiet area. ](*,) Hunters (maybe forest?) not sure... Never saw or heard anyone and the trailer was being surveilled by trail cams.

Most of the aspens are not quite ready or went from green to drop. However, there are pockets of change. Just go exploring. Only saw one gamble changed. Maples were the star of the show with most near peak. Probably this weekend for better results.

Adventure number 1 for the weekend headed up north to do some exploring up on the Mogollon Rim for some fall color. Decided to explore in the Turkey Beaver Wildlife Quiet area to avoid the mass of hunters that were out. Took an old two track that led to the bottom of Beaver Creek. About half way down a Bull Elk started bugeling in the canyon below. I hurried down but he was already gone by the time I got to the bottom. Headed back up the other side of the canyon and oddly there was hardly any fall color as everything was still pretty green. Headed back to my rig and started driving the smaller roads, finding a couple spots were there was a little bit of color but again, Mother Nature must have lost track of time because there wasn't much yet. Around noon the skies opened up and started dumping rain, so that was my cue to head home. It had been since April that I have been up on the rim, it's always beautiful up there just too many dam people nowadays and October equals masses of hunters. Hoping in another week or two the colors will be prime.

I wanted to check out the fall color on Beaver Turkey Ridge, so I did a CCW loop that started and ended at the Fish Hatchery TH.

There was some fall color in the Beaver Turkey Ridge WQA, but I'd say that it is largely past prime. I did not see any red maple leaves left -- normally there is a lot in this area.

There is a little bit of color around Horton Spring, and it should get better over the next few days. I am wondering if See Canyon would be nice now.

Going forward, I would think that fall foliage will be better down below the rim as opposed to being up on the rim.

In the Beaver Turkey Ridge WQA, the big tooth reds were gone. There were some nice aspens, some showy maples with yellow leaves, and even some oaks that looked good with sunlight on them. The maples that are left will be gone soon, but there are still aspens with green leaves on them in some places, so these might look good over the next few days.

We made a weekend trip to one of my favorite areas on the rim to check out the seasonal progressions. It seems that there's always a wide range of dates for colors in this part of the world, spanning nearly a month of time with a kaleidoscope of changes from summer green to winter bare.

This weekend was solid for aspen color, but the maples were as pathetic as I have ever seen them. Many were already bare, but most with remaining leaves were dry and drab. We found one or two vibrant trees, but it was really quite disappointing to see the maples this year.

Nonetheless, we pieced together a nice 10 mile loop on Saturday in the WQA, and I set out solo for a short 3 miler Sunday much farther west than I've ever searched for groves of color in the Bear Canyon drainage. Water continues to abound on the rim, with standing pools in flat areas at the highest elevations to running water in many of the creeks and drainages we crossed. Not sure if the maple colors here were affected by the ample rainfall this summer or if another factor (or combination) played a role. Like everything else, it's probably reasonable to blame that Brandon guy.

On the hunt for more fall color, and I'd never seen the Beaver Turkey Quiet Area make the change, so I looped a track around the ridge with a trip to Knoll Lake. Started at the Hatchery TH at sunrise.

Nobody on Babe Haught's tale of two trails. Rocky and steep turns into smooth descent after 300. The lake's dried up pretty far. With the water level pulled back there were some sandy beaches from which to watch the steam rise off the water while the sun got going. Saw the first people of the day, a camper down the SE leg and a couple folks who had paddled out and camped on the knoll. The few aspens there are were just starting to change around the lake.

Up from the lake with a brief trip in the uppermost parts of Gentry Canyon and then on to Gentry Spring. Mostly green until past Turkey Creek and into the quiet area. In BTQA the oaks are just about prime. The many aspens had mostly yet to change. Maples were about 50% green, 50% red, orange, or yellow. Mostly yellow. I'd think from now for about a week it's pretty much good to go. Wind's taking a lot of leaves down, but there's so much to see.

Found my way back to 300 passing Horseshoe Lake. Down Horton Springs, which was overgrown in some places. Didn't see anyone from Knoll Lake to Horton Spring, and then it got busy. Lots of campers by the spring and a few groups on Highline. Looks like just about nothing has turned below The Rim. Saw a few massive elk, but that was it for wildlife.

The elk were all up on the ridge. No shine down in either canyon suggests that they are staying on the ridge up at night and through the morning as well.

In my opinion the upper half of Turkey and the upper part of Beaver are the best, lower down it is not that scenic.

I decided to head up to the Rim to check out the fall foliage and Beaver Turkey Ridge did not disappoint.

We did a loop hike starting and ending at the Hatchery TH. We went east on Highline to Horton Spring; took the steep Horton Spring Trail up to the Rim; wandered around Beaver Turkey Ridge; and then came back to the TH on the Babe Haught Trail.

Foliage on Beaver Turkey Ridge was a bit past prime, but there were pockets of some really nice fall color. It was very enjoyable hiking through there.

There was no fall color yet around Horton Spring. I imagine that it will be a week, and possibly 2 weeks, before any fall color shows up around the spring.

We saw a small tarantula on the Highline Trail, and we saw a single elk in 2 different places on Beaver Turkey -- one cow and one bull.

It was definitely a great day to be hiking up on the Rim!

Decided to wander back through the Turkey Creek and Beaver Ridge areas in the afternoon hours, occasionally following old decommissioned logging roads but mostly just taking paths of least resistance. We entered from FR 91 near Gentry Spring, moving East down a canyon drainage that appeared to have a large stand of hardwoods from satellite imagery. The intermixing of Maples and Aspens was truly spectacular, exceeding my expectations! This whole area is a mosaic of ridges and drainages, meadows and dense woodlands. The ridges are dominated by pine and oaks (maybe not quite at prime color). The wetter, cooler drainages are dominated by maples which seem to be showing prime colors (reds, pinks, oranges)! Aspens are mixed throughout and range from still green to golden to leaves dropped. Quite a bit of diversity throughout here. Saw a group of Elk about halfway through the trip, and heard their calls fairly loudly for the rest of the stroll.

Set out to find some fall colors on the rim! Started the day at the Turkey Beaver area and just roamed around to where we saw colors. It was pretty in there, but a lot of the leaves had already fallen. There are random patches that are very beautiful if you go off exploring. We took a couple of breaks in remote areas and stayed very quiet, so hopeful for a bear sighting. We saw lots of elk tracks but did not see any wildlife (or other people) until we got back to the road. Any of the creek beds we saw were completely dry, as expected. Although it was beautiful and quiet, we wanted to see more and thankfully were camping on the rim so could continue the leaf peeping search the following day! More to come in my next log.

Headed up to one of my favorite spots for fall color. Short hike down into a canyon and hit a goldmine. Huge grove of Maple, Oak and Aspen. While some are peaking there are still tons that have not. I would say another or week would be perfect. I definitely plan to be back within the next 2 weeks for another look.

Day 1 of 4 Day Camping Trip. This Area historically is peaking for Fall Color. Not this Year. It was mostly still green. I didn't Hike very far as it seemed pointless at that point. I struggled to find compositions with what there was to work with. The Highlight of the Day turned out to not be the Fall Colors. It turned out to be a adrenalin pumping encounter with the Charmin Toilet Paper Spokesman at only 150 feet away. I did everything wrong and apparently right. Instead of making noise, I stayed in tune with the Quiet Area and stayed still and completely quiet. I was hoping my black t-shirt didn't confuse. As a result, I got photos through the deadfall and he posed briefly, sniffing the air and staring at me, before sauntering on. We were both headed opposite directions, but even though I was not traveling his direction, I kept hypervigilant all the way back to the truck. I only had my fanny pack and a liter of water, so nothing that I normally carry, including food, my knife, or my In-Reach. Needless to say, the excitement stayed with me the rest of the day. It was a contradiction. I was glad I was alone as I might not have had the opportunity to see such an amazing animal up close, but at the same time, to be alone if it had gone bad, would have been bad. Just that sighting and knowing that we had shared mutual respect, made for an Amazing Day. It was a warm day, but both of us are ready to winter.

Multiple people flaked out for another trip, so I decided to go up on the rim for a couple days with the Lunatic. Found one of the last camp spots in Sitegraves right on the edge of the rim. Wandered up Beaver Canyon, up to the road above, followed that for a while, and then went down into Turkey Creek for the trip back to the rim. Beaver Canyon was cool. There were some fenced off sections and there were nice bear prints in the mud under a fence. The canyon narrowed after that and then opened up a lot under the powerlines. Followed what looked like a very old road along the right side for a while, and then went up to the actual road above. Explored my way down into Turkey Creek and then back to the 300. No fall colors yet and I saw zero animals, was probably because of the temps. Just nice to get out of the blazing heat for a few days.

Nice relaxing weekend exploring this area.

On Friday we parked near the Upper Horton Springs TH and hiked into Beaver Canyon. Started to see some pools of water beyond the enclosures. Found the old red truck. We camped a little north of Beaver Park.

On Saturday we worked our way down Beaver and turned back up Turkey Creek. Camped with access to one of the better pools we saw all weekend.

Sunday we eventually climbed out of Turkey Creek to walk FR92 back to the Rim Road. Lots of aspens above the canyon on the ridge, though some have recently blown down.

Certainly met expectations for a leisurely off-the-beaten-path trip to the woods. The route finding is quite easy here and the elk trails can be very well defined. Water was a concern but we ended up coming across enough pools to make it work. Thanks to folks who have logged some trips in the area, it definitely helped in the planning.

Took my mom out for some off-trail fun for some fall colors up on the Rim.

Started from Fish Hatchery, headed out on Highline and then up the very steep trail of Horton to the Rim Road (my mom was probably questioning her decision to hike with me at this point). Then ventured off into Turkey Creek. Pretty easy moving along the creek and through the forest. Saw some Maples and Aspens and no one in sight, could not as for more. I would say in one week it will hit its prime, but it was beautiful nevertheless. First time on the Babe Haught Trail for myself as well, and really enjoy the views of the rim!

I had been eyeing the Beaver Turkey Ridge WQA for a while, and decided to check it out today to see if there was any fall foliage in the area. I managed to bribepersuade Tracie, my intrepid and favorite hiking partner, to come with me on the hike.

We started at the Fish Hatchery and took the Highline Trail to Horton Spring; then we went up the steep Horton Spring Trail up to the Rim Road; then we wandered for a while in Beaver Turkey Ridge before making our way over to the Babe Haught Trail; then we descended from the Rim on the Babe Haught Trail back to our starting point.

I enjoyed hiking this section of the Highline Trail. While on the Highline we saw a bull elk, and heard quite a bit of elk bugling. While we were taking a snack break at Horton Spring, Tracie saw something moving above us to our left. We took a closer look and saw a coatimundi scampering on the ground. We saw one deer in the WQA, but saw no other animals in the WQA.

There was a decent amount of fall foliage in Beaver Turkey Ridge, and I would think that it will get better over the next week or so.

Close call, Turtle vs. Deer on the Beeline to begin the day just north of Rye. A big buck in velvet.
No need for more coffee at this point.

We did this loop CW, starting in Turkey Creek. Easy walikin' for the most part, through the wet morning foliage.
The prevalent flora on the day were the large patches of Yellow Cone flower.

We jumped out and up on a ridge to check out an area we'd been to last year, then back down into Turkey Creek.

Once in Beaver Canyon, it was a "bit boldery" for a while. We would not hit the sidewalk like part for awhile.

Closer to Beaver Park, we hit a steady rain for about 20 min.

We decided to jump out, up a side canyon, directly back to the Car.

This hike is an 8-9 in the fall with lower temps/humidity and the colors. This time of year, a 6-7 with sweaty temps in the 70's

Came up to the rim For a weekend hiking/camping trip. Was surprised at the amount of people camping on fr 40f and fr 91 but eventually we found a really nice spot away from the crowds. Saturday evening we did a short hike to the Gentry Spring area again. The few seeps in the meadow still had water, but downstream in Gentry Canyon was dry 😢. Monsoons are suppose to start firing up this week so that’s good. Anyway we retrieved a game camera from a side canyon close to Gentry Spring and it provided awesome entertainment next to the fire that evening. Had hundreds of pictures and videos of elk, baby elk, deer, coyotes, and even a sweet video of a mountain lion! Oh and a not so shabby video of a bear licking the camera! We are not hunters but cool to see what kind of wildlife roam in the areas we love to hike.

Next morning since we were camped just off Turkey Canyon we had to drop in there and check that out. Was last there about 4-5 years ago and it was my favorite canyon I’ve ever been too. Safe to say it still hasn’t changed. And this time I was able to show my wife and 2 dogs. The sweeping meadows and at times steep canyon walls are breathtaking. There was good water for a while but eventually started to dry out and tighten up and that’s when we climbed out. Found an elk shed and then dropped into open draw and explored that a little. Dry but beautiful. Looped back to camp and called it a day. Wildlife of the weekend consisted of turkeys (of course) and a lone coyote. Good times And good weather up on the beautiful Mogollon Rim.

Btw the route included is of our hike Sunday morning involving Turkey Canyon and open draw.

I don’t think I saw flow but where we hiked had plenty of large pools and was nice cold clear water. Farther downstream started to dry up

Quick little stop to an old favorite after hiking all day roughly 10 miles NW of this area.
Encountered a healthy young bull and two cow elk enjoying the water and bounty of food as we entered the park.
Antler growth is truly something spectacular this year due to the feed growth caused by that record snowmelt moisture, every bull I’ve seen from young to mature is sporting the healthiest possible rack and has the hunting community in a frenzy with the amount of giant bulls and bucks out this year.
Great little easy stroll finished in the dark to top off a great day up in some of my favorite country.
