Decided to take advantage of the last day of the unseasonably pleasant temperatures. 52 to start, slowly climbed into the 60s and eventually topped out at 76 when the sun was out. Still a cool breeze though and plenty of clouds to keep the sun from ruining things too much.

Hadn't walked 2nd Water since it burned. Met all the expectations I'd been given from other visits I'd seen reports of. Meh.

Boulder Canyon is unburned so that's nice. This trail has gotten a lot more use over the years and is pretty much a highway now. Despite the recent stormy weather, still not a drop of water remaining on the surface.

Took the old boots route up to the saddle, though there's a newer one that gets plenty of use a bit to the north which I used on the descent. Straightforward trip across to the summit. High clouds made for some flat light and lackluster views. Took a solid break to enjoy some 8am m&ms and gummybears for breakfast. :D

Passed the only other humans on the day along the 103. Turning onto 236 I decided to head up canyon, which I had not previously done. The burn here is fairly complete, so there's no mystery to any of it. Plentiful water, though it looked stagnant and unappealing. I imagine these pools now heat up to gross temperatures with the lack of shade surrounding them.

Made some attempt to find the Stoker Trail. Don't bother, there's no sign of it anymore. But it's an easy ashy traverse back to 236 even without obvious tread.

Quick work back to the trailhead. Sun came out for a bit and it felt warmer than the thermometer indicated. Go figure. Hit a solid rain shower on the drive home which is always a nice May treat here.

Plenty of pools of algae-topped water and a very light trickle from one pool to the next. Filterable? Sure. But it doesn't look appealing at first glance.

Decided to join a Meetup for 9 am. This is an hour from my place so the start time is early for me. Advertised as Hackberry Springs Loop but upon comparing my route to those available on here, found a diff match.

Two of us branched out on 2nd Water and then checked out a couple side trails. Beautiful area altho not much in the way of water as of today.

Been a while since I hiked on the boulder canyon trail from the marina. Interesting that now the marina parking lot designates only 10 parking spots for the Trailhead. :/. I took the 10th spot when we arrived, and it was pretty early.

We started off in the morning with some glorious clouds which didn't last too long. It was a nice hike up and around. We didn't see too many people at that point. As we headed down to the wash, we started seeing people come up. The skies cleared, and the rest of day would be clear, almost hot, and sunny. We had a snack when we reached the wash, and enjoyed the running water before continuing on. ♥️. So much running water!

From there, we hiked on the trail next to the wash. Saw some back packers camping. Took a gander at the rusty bed frame. At the junction with second water trail, we headed towards Garden Mesa. After going on for a while (but not up onto garden Mesa), we turned off on the Stoker trail. This is not a trail I have been on before, so I was excited to see a new place in the supes! It's a short 0.3 mile trail to the old mining camp site from second water. At the site is a rusted out bed frame and a camp fire ring in a clearing on level ground. That is about it. The trail itself was very faint, but distinguishable within about 30 feet of the second water trail, up from the Gulley crossing. There were some cairns along the way, and there were a lot of cairns getting closer to the old mining site. It doesn't look to get much use. There was an old tent in a bag sitting on the rusted bed frame which looks to be disintegrating from exposure to the elements.

After a quick snack at the mining site, we retraced our steps going back the same way.

As always, it was a glorious day to be out enjoying the spectacular scenery in the supes! 🥰♥️

As the day went on, we saw quite a number of people coming and going on the trail. Probably 30 or so. A bit like the mall! Maybe time to drive further in with hopes of seeing less people!

My route from route scout has issues despite being in airplane mode the whole time. I set my settings correctly, but maybe my phone decided to revert the settings back on its own. Phones are sneaky that way sometimes . :/

1045 start. I queued up a nice easy loop hike from the Needle Vista lot to Hackberry Spring, up to Garden Valley and back via Second Water trail and the Horse Lot.

Then I got silly and added a second loop with an off trail trek across Black Mesa to Second Water Canyon, which pretty much negated the little saunter I had in mind.

The view east from the top of Black Mesa almost made it worth the effort. While in Second Water Canyon I came across some old pipes and a spring box that I didn’t expect to see.

It was chilly out with clear skies, just a wisp of breeze. Didn’t see many people today.

0700 start. Took a clockwise loop around the boulevard trails out of First Water. Stating the obvious, there is no water on this loop. I took the Stoker trail down to Second Water Spring. It was dry also. There are a couple of frog pools surrounding the reeds below the spring, but not worth filtering unless you’re desperate.

What I like about this big loop hike are the sights along the way. There are wilderness monuments around just about every bend, keeping the excitement level high, tempting you towards something more challenging along the way. Like Battleship Mountain. A hike in the Supes is always a good time, especially in the morning. Just need some rain to make it spectacular.

The trails are in better shape than expected. Occasional cat’s claw will nip at the shins on Boulder Canyon but it’s not overgrown. Those headed for Battleship can wear shorts. The rest of the hike along Boulder Canyon trail isn’t bad. Dutchman is good all the way back to the trailhead, with a wee bit of thorny stuff grabbing at you in the last (first) couple of miles.

For a Saturday with nice weather, I thought I might see more people hiking. I saw about a dozen total, most within a mile of the trailhead coming and going. Only a handful of cars when I started and finished.

Took Dmitri out for another hike in the Superstitions. He handled the 8 mile last week very well, so I decided to try to step it up a bit. I decided to go out to Cholla Tank, which I hadn't been to in over a decade. Started from First Water TH and took the Second Water Trail to the trail for the cholla tank. The trail is a bit rough at first as it crosses a drainage, but then it's totally level and very easy to hike. It's still very faint, but not too hard to follow and the easiness of the hiking makes it very pleasant. Cholla Tank was full of water and very green. This would be a very nice camping area.

After that, I decided to go find the Stoker Camp, which I have never been to. having the track definitely helped, and it got us there very quickly, as well. That trail also gets faint in spots and some of the cairns can throw you off track. Interesting to see some of the older items (bed and pots) used by miners, as well as newer items (duct tape) that hikers use.

Made it back to the trailhead by noon. Saw more hikers as we got closer to the end. Also saw several groups of overnight backpackers on their way out. First water creek is running pretty well, but still easy to cross.
