Another one of our usual routes.
Had a breeze so 73-89° seemed fine. (to me, anyway)

7 am start made for slightly warmer temps: 86-95° F
Felt much nicer going downhill on Scorpion than when doing loop CW.

Out early enough for temps to stay 78-90° F
Slight variation from the route we used in April.

Both of us felt pretty wiped out from yesterday so we decided to skip it today. But after doing a bit of gardening at home under an overcast sky Tracey said it didn't feel that hot, so we set off for a late, our usual, close-to-home loop.
Being a Sunday I expected more mountain-bikers but there weren't that many, probably 'cuz the early-birds were already done with their rides.

On the first part with calm winds the humidity made itself known but once turning West onto Scorpion Alley the breeze picked up and with a continued overcast it actually felt quite pleasant, so on this day 88° to 92° was ok.

Quick, early, very humid hike with temps 81-87° F

Met/passed by over a dozen mountain bikers (50/50 on E-Bikes) ranging from expert to scared to even be ON a bike... two gals appeared to be on their first ride with shiny new bikes. A guy with them appeared to be their minder/guide, although not seeming to 'mind' much.

Traffic on Bush Highway @ 8 am already busy along with the usual idiots... one guy appearing to do a 5 point (couldn't do it in less?) turn-around in a spot where the predominant traffic had a poor line-of-sight. Somehow made it without getting hit, or other vehicles being rear-ended while slowing.

A quick early loop to beat the temps. Humid but breezy kept it reasonable. Encountered no bikers, or hikers, just how we like it. Ok, so Tracey also likes a no rattlesnakes hike as well.

Quick hike on one of our regular local loops. Temps 69° to 80° with SE breeze so it was quite pleasant.

Had to get some chores done at home so I stayed local but did a little longer hike.

Started from the Ellsworth ATV TH north of Usery. Mostly shady up Alpe D'Huez until the top, then took the Goat Trail over to Sunset Ridge. The views up at the top here are really nice and underrated. You can see from Phoenix to Scottsdale, Red Mountain, Mazzie, Ord, 4Peaks and the Supes. A winter hike after a rainy day gives some great views of snow capped mountains to the north.

I hadn't done Sunset Ridge in a few years and I remembered the dicey sections. After last spring and summer of doing really steep hikes, this was a breeze this time. Because it's so steep and technical for the bikers, there's not much traffic on it.

After Sunset Ridge I took Twisted Sister over to Big Sister. Big Sister had the most traffic, all downhill speeders. I took High Horse over to the Stinger Loop and then made a wrong turn and headed west on another trail. I doubled back and got back on the Stinger Loop but took the Brush Lite Trail, which parallels the Stinger west loop and has been rerouted a bit, which I noticed only after I got home and downloaded the track on my computer.

took Scorpion Alley over to Scorpion, and then headed over to Maricopa Madness to complete the loop. These trails had much less traffic, but that may have been because it was later in the morning and getting warm.

Temperature was cool to start, and getting hot towards the end, but not that bad.

Another Sunday morning easy hike close to home. Started from the Bush Highway southbound on the Scorpion Trail, west on High Noon, generally south on Stinger, then finished the loop on Bush Lite East. Cloudy at first, then the sun came out after an hour or so. Light traffic overall, but mostly all bikers. Saw one trail runner. No wildlife or feral fauna. Seems like this area has more gnats that other parts of metro Phoenix. They weren't bad but spring is here now, so it will get worse.

Met up with my new fat bike bestie on the Bush Highway this morning at Mesquite trail do ride some sand and singletrack. Started on Mesquite and headed toward the Salt River, took the west half of the Salt River Interpretive trail to the river. Turned west on the social trail and followed the pipe fence all the way back out to the Bush Highway at Mine Trail access. Turned around and followed the fenceline along the river to the Coon Bluff Rec Area. Watch the small crowd and then took the eastern half of the Interpretive trail to Mesquite and Bush Highway. For the second half of the day we did a counter clockwise loop on Wild Horse, Scorpion, and Bush Lite trail. Cloudy and cool today. Saw horses down at the river. Plenty of bikers on the Hawes trails loop.

Started at the bottom of the Scorpion Trail from the Bush Highway and did a clockwise loop on that, Wild Horse, and Bush Lite West and East Trails. The gnat activity was much higher than the day before at South Mountain, not sure why that is exactly. Only saw bikers and one trail runner the entire time. I hiked at bit of a faster pace than I normally do on Sundays, which was helped by the pretty easy terrain on these trails, so I was done kind of early.

When I got back to the car, the Bush Highway was crazy busy, but only in the north/west bound direction to the Beeline. I found out when I got that this was due to the fatal car crash that occurred that morning on 87 near Fountain Hills. It was tricky trying to get out to head the other way, but not too bad.

Slowly getting back into the swing of things. I've always liked the Hawes Trail system. I have a buddy that wanted to hike, but not on one of my "typical" trails. I am still dealing with my latest injury. This time an achilles tendon problem. Can't mess around with that one. So, PT, stretching, walking and some easy hikes is my future for the coming weeks.

We started off Usery Rd north of the pass and made a lasso loop with Wild Horse, Scorpion and High Noon back to the road via Wild Horse. LOTS of mountain bikers out. The weather was perfect.

Not many blooms out, but with the coming rains, I hope we get some splashes of color out there soon. It looks like the brittlebush is about to start and I can see the blooms forming on the cholla and hedgehog cacti.

A little soreness afterwards, but it felt good to get out and about. A quick and easy 5 miles.

Joined the Bagel Bunch (Doug, Bruce, Jane, Jen, James) for a ride around Hawes this morning. Started at the Wildhorse trailhead and headed up Twisted Sister, down Big Sister, up Wildhorse, down Scorpion, and back on Bush Lite East/West with a quick spin on Bush Lite Loop. Some hikers out on the trails this morning, bikes everywhere!

Parked on Bush Hwy across from Mesquite trail and took Riverview east to Lower Mine, Granite, Ridge, Saguaro, Twisted Sister, down Big Sister, Wild Horse all the way to Scorpion, Bush Lite East, Bush Lite Loop, and Bush Lite West back to the start. First time riding trail on both the east and west side. Lots and lots of climbing. Interesting observation. Saw mostly hikers on the eastern trails, Granite, Ridge, Saguaro and bikers on the western trails, Wild Horse etc.

Ran my second 50 miler this weekend. Had a good day overall

first 13 miles were easy and i soaked in some smooth running. after that the route went out of the park and into much rougher territory for a while including some off trail through bulldog canyon and some rough, steep and rocky jeep roads. was still feeling pretty good at this point.

miles 21-25 were sandy uphill roads but i still managed to run some of it.

after the 25 aid station we entered the Hawes trail network. i ran some, struggled some and passed some people.

i was able to see Michelle and Sierra at the mile 34 aid station and that really helped because i hit that at a low point mentally and physically and was also dehydrated. they gave me a much needed tune-up and out i went.

the next 10 miles were the hardest of the day for me. lot of uphill, physically wasted and battling demons - really the reason why i was there lol. did pass some more people.

the dude at the mile 44 aid station was a life saver. he got me on track with electrolytes, food and positivity. the last part of the route was the hardest, climbing up pass mountain trail then dropping down the rocky way in the dark, but this was one of my best stretches of the day. i ran quite a bit of the uphill and hit the high point at sunset - which was lovely. also i love running in the dark so i did pretty well from there on to the end.

really a stellar weather day, could not have asked for more. Happy to have another one of these under my belt. Feel pretty good about this one. oh one last thing, my right arch hurt for every single step of the way.
