I picked another loop I had done within the past year. I originally planned to start from the Scorpion TH along the Bush Hwy but it's not really a true TH and there are No Parking signs everywhere there. I ended up at the newly finished Red Mountain parking lot, which is pretty big. Did the same loop but from a different spot. Hiked Bush Lite West, Wild Horse, Scorpion, Bush Lite East back to the TH.

Started in the dark for a little bit and the sunlight arrived quickly. Windy most of the morning but not really chilly. Very pleasant weather, clear skies and mild temps. No other hikers seen but many bikers. Very nice morning on the trails.

At home the forecast rain for early yesterday was a bust, and with such temperamental conditions I vacillated whether to hike or bike until it was too late to do either (that's my excuse anyway), so no way I would let that happen again today.

Local forecast said cloudy and overcast with rain by 2 pm, but radar seemed to belie both possibilities, I figured hiking would be the better choice for changing conditions, packing both medium weight outer shirt and waterproof gear.

I began with a distinctly cold wind in my face but within 15 minutes I was in full sun, enough that I was sweating so I doffed my outer shirt, but of course minutes later it's a gray sky with a cold wind again. I was about to put the outer shirt back on when the sun returned. But again it was just being super temperamental and a few minutes later I felt two small drops of what, rain? Nope, it was hail.

With super dark skies now I had just enough time to pull the waterproof windbreaker out of my back before the hail became a full-on rain squall. I took a few photos of the hail but of course it was so small they wouldn't show so I tried to zoom in. Unfortunately it took me a bit to realize the rain hitting the screen of the phone was negating anything I attempted to do, and all of a sudden it was filming. Ok, since at least now that I can see the hail in the video I let it run for a minute before the screen was completely wet. Instead of holding it out like I did in the past with my camera, I realize now I should have kept it close enough to my face that it would be somewhat protected under my hat.

The rest of the hike was under similarly changing conditions, with a bit of sunshine at the very end. But as soon as I started the drive home, here comes one more heavy rain squall.

Very last-minute selection... was thinking of something rather North but this has always been the quick-and-easy fall-back.
The sun tried but was unable to peek through the clouds so the temps hovered between 59-63° F.

The usual with a slight route change to check the rain gauge at Coon Bluff Road, ending with a bit less AEG. The gauge yielded an overnight precipitation of 0.02".

Our usual, this time starting from the Bush Highway/Coon Bluff three-way intersection.

As usual, we have to be wary in crossing Bush Highway as the stop sign is little more than a suggestion for many drivers. And the road bikers? Nope, they NEVER stop.

While I noticed someone had done some fine trail work on eroded areas of the various trails, they neglected one drainage crossing which has always been a rough dip, and of course got worse after the recent heavy rains.

So... being tired of all the times I told myself someday I'll fix this I finally got around to doing something about it. With the right tools a half-hour of effort was well spent.

Now that it's done and I'm out here, what next? I didn't bring my bike so I decided to do some miscellaneous rambling, which just now tugged at some mental cobwebs from long in the past...
Miscellaneous Ramblings was a column featured at the front of Road & Track magazine (which I subscribed to at the time) written by John Dinkel, who was the editor in the 1980's.

Anyway, as many times as I have wandered in this area I had never come across this particularly weird looking Saguaro, so naturally I had to document it with a few photos. While the rest of the rambling returned nothing more of note, at least I accomplished the task I set out to do, and will benefit from it every time I ride the trail.

After a bunch of 7-10K elevation hikes in Utah we're back to low elevations and warmer temps, but with a nice breeze 78-90° wasn't bad.

Both of us felt pretty wiped out from yesterday so we decided to skip it today. But after doing a bit of gardening at home under an overcast sky Tracey said it didn't feel that hot, so we set off for a late, our usual, close-to-home loop.
Being a Sunday I expected more mountain-bikers but there weren't that many, probably 'cuz the early-birds were already done with their rides.

On the first part with calm winds the humidity made itself known but once turning West onto Scorpion Alley the breeze picked up and with a continued overcast it actually felt quite pleasant, so on this day 88° to 92° was ok.

Quick, early, very humid hike with temps 81-87° F

Met/passed by over a dozen mountain bikers (50/50 on E-Bikes) ranging from expert to scared to even be ON a bike... two gals appeared to be on their first ride with shiny new bikes. A guy with them appeared to be their minder/guide, although not seeming to 'mind' much.

Traffic on Bush Highway @ 8 am already busy along with the usual idiots... one guy appearing to do a 5 point (couldn't do it in less?) turn-around in a spot where the predominant traffic had a poor line-of-sight. Somehow made it without getting hit, or other vehicles being rear-ended while slowing.

A quick early loop to beat the temps. Humid but breezy kept it reasonable. Encountered no bikers, or hikers, just how we like it. Ok, so Tracey also likes a no rattlesnakes hike as well.
