After the big hike the day before, I wasn't sure how much I would be able to do. My quads were sore most of the night so any downhill would be rough. Fortunately I felt much better in the morning, just a little stiff.

From the Ellsworth ATV TH I took Maricopa Madness south to Scorpion, Scorpion Alley, north on Wild Horse, Jumping Jack's cut, and finished up on Lance's Trail, completing a loop. By mile 2 my ankle started to hurt, likely from the big hike the day before. It stayed that way for the rest of the hike, but went away once I was done.

Weather was kind of chilly to start but got very warm as soon as the sun was up. only wildlife I saw was a hawk from a distance. my camera helped me get a decent shot. Nice to still get a good Sunday morning hike in after the big hike in Mazzies 24 hours earlier.

This was my first foray into the trail system known as Hawes.

Linda suggested the east side of the park for the better hiking country, so I put together an 11-ish mile sampler to use as our guide. We got moving around 7:00 AM just as the skies were starting to lighten. The cloudy sky, 53-degree weather, and a slight breeze made things very pleasant. There is a plethora of trails out there, so having a GPS track of your route is definitely helpful.

It’s easy to tell that the majority, if not all, of these trails were named by mountain bikers. My favorite stretches of the day were Red Mountain Rush, Peak 2972, Iron Goat, and Pure O—mainly for the views and the terrain. Pure O is a Double Black Diamond in the MTB world that I would never consider riding; it’s steep and loose with numerous jumps (including one through a tree and another that spans a 20-foot gap).

It was good catching up with Linda again. Like HAZ... oops, that’s someone else!

Bruce and I opted for some all new to us local territory today. I'd been on some of the western Hawes trails with @tibber and Deborah about 4 years ago, but nothing on the eastern side. Bruce put together a good loop with a nice sampling of some of the eastern trails. We met at 0700 and got started, making the loop counter-clockwise. Having a track was helpful, as there are a ton of trails in this area. You could put together any combo of trails to suit whatever mileage/aeg you are looking for. Most of the trail surfaces are decomposed granite, which is prone to rutting, and the steeper sections can be slippery, but most of the time, we had good footing.

Nice clouds most of the morning, and a good breeze. It was very breezy up on 2972, and we scrambled up to the little peak just south of the high point, where there was an American flag anchored into a fancy setup with solar lights. Getting up and down 2972 was steep, but not as bad as I thought it would be. Some zigzagging on the southeast portion of the loop in order to incorporate more trails. My two favorite trails were probably Red Mountain Rush, and Iron Goat. Our final descent on Pure O did make me exclaim "wow" a few times, but mostly because I was trying not to fall. That trail is STEEP. If I tried it on a bike, I'd be dead. There was also an impressive gap for bikes to clear (at least 15') near the bottom of the trail.

Once back on level ground, it was a quick walk back to the trailhead. Nice to hike with Bruce again, and see some new trails, plus a peak. Not an area I'd hike often, but worth checking out on a weekday. Saw a lot of bikers and a few hikers. Weekends are probably awful.

Nice 7 mile loop on the east side of the Hawes system. Lances, Jumping Jack, High Noon, up Red Mtn Rush, Goat, and back down Alpe d'Huez. That was a good cardio work out but my knees are showing their age. A few poppies on the ridgelines but nothing spectacular.

I wanted to get this one done before the summer heat hits. The hardest part is the climb at first and I knew I could get that done while it was still cool enough in the morning going up Alp D'Huez from Usery Road.

Near the top of Red Mountain Rush there's a social trail that goes to the 3 peaks on Usery Mountain. I made my way up to the first one and decided not to hike the mini ridgeline to the other two since I had a loop planned out. Views up there are really nice. Spotted my buddy's house in that neighborhood and took a zoom in pic that I texted him later.

Headed down Red Mountain Rush. Saw some bikers who had just passed me at the start of the Sunset Ridge. They were reading the warning sign at the top of that trail and then decided to head down Red Mtn. I asked the last guy to leave "You guys aren't going down that trail?". He responded, "it says experts only. That ain't us."

Red Mtn Rush had the most traffic of all the trails all day. All downhill, obviously, that's what it's designed for (for bikers). No problems with sharing, everyone was cool and I made sure to get off the trail ASAP when I could hear someone coming.

Finished before 11am, weather was getting a bit warm but not like it will be in another month or so. Parking lot was nearly empty when I got back, as compared to nearly full when I started. Saw no other hikers, only bikers all day.

My buddy Dan B was in town from Seattle and wanted to do a epic ride in the valley. Went out to Hawes to ride the new Big Sister and Red Mountain Rush trails. Parked near the start of Twisted Sister and made our way on the following trails: Twisted Sister, Big Sister, Wild Horse, Jumping Jacks, L'Alpe d'Huez, Goat, Red Mountain Rush, and Wild Horse back to the van. Crazy long climb up L'Alpe d'Huez and even crazier drop off the ridge down Red Mountain Rush.
