Very little water in White Horse Lake made the hike around the lake substantially shorter than usual when walking the shoreline instead of the actual trail. It was weird to see all the cracked mudflats and exposed stumps.

We saw a few very cute tiny thin snakes moseying in and out of the ruts in the mud flats. The kids nicknamed them "danger noodles" 🤣🤣🤣🤣.

Also, the night before we saw a beautiful large spider that really blended in with the surrounding pine needles.

Nice hike to the Sycamore canyon overlook and also around white Horse Lake from the campground. The water level of white Horse Lake is super low. I've never seen it so low on all my years of going there.

Nothing new to report on the overlook trail. No horses or cows in the meadow area after going through the 2 gates. Things are starting to slowly grow back from the burn near the overlook, but still lots of burned tree skeletons around. Trail is easy to follow, and only a few downed trees on the trail.

There is a big fort structure someone constructed on the way to the canyon overlook junction.

No drinking water at the white Horse Lake Campground, so that was a surprise. I should have checked the website. The water processing is down. The camphost said the maintaining entity is new this year. No kayaks to rent like usual, (maybe because very little water) and also no food truck that used to be there on weekends in season.

Beautiful weather for a quick hike to the overlook and around the lake. No cows or horses grazing on the way to the overlook. Water level in the lake seemed a bit low.

Delightful hike with the kids around the lake and over to the overlook. White horse lake is so beautiful and not overly crowded. It's always a nice place to camp and hike.

We saw horses on the way back to the lake from the overlook.

We also took a drive over to JD Dam Lake and Sycamore Point overlook which are great nearby sites to see. The overlook is especially breathtaking. A much better view than the Overlook view from the hike near white horse lake!

Note that you can walk entirely around the lake despite what the official route shows.

A staple hike when we camp at the White horse lake Campground. The view of sycamore canyon is always nice from the overlook. The burn damage did not look bad along the section traveled.

The kids were semi-reasonable sports about doing this hike. :/

Saw a javelina. I did not expect that, as I thought they were desert dwellers. Also saw a great blue heron and a herd of horses.

At first, I thought the stallion of the herd had lost its mind. Later I figure it was trying to impress the ladies in feats of strength and endurance. The ladies were having none of it. Each of the 5 mares had a young foal and kept kicking at the stallion whenever it got close!

Distance includes the Overlook Trail 70.

Better Late than Never I guess...

I did 9 Hikes on this Trip, but I decided to just do the one Photoset with the Camping, Driving and Highlights from 8 Short Hikes and a longer one, that turned just a Tad Epic in the last 4 Miles... I went up on Thursday, and hit a couple of Areas in Flag before getting to Camp after Dark.... I headed for the Barn on Sunday, although from Camp, I think it took me about 3 1/2 Hours to get to Flag because of some pretty Sweet Storm and Sunset Action along the Way....

Chumley always puts on a Great Event and his Attention to Detail is Unrivaled. Nonot's Fires with Chumley's Wood Contributions did not Disappoint. It was Great to see Old Friends again and Meet some of the Newer HAZ Faces out there... Thanks for Organizing this Todd...

Awesome Weekend with Good People and Sweet Hikes and some Amazing Wildlife along the Way... What did the Fox say? "Na Na, Nana Na! You didn't get a Photo of me!" ](*,)

Spent a couple of nights at White Horse Lake. Took a slow meander around the lake on Saturday afternoon, right before the heavens opened up and dumped on us.

Went for osprey pictures. The chick in the main nest hasn't fledged yet. Saw adult arrive with a fish and the other adult that was protecting the chick in the nest fed the chick!

I wouldn't go out of my way for this hike, but since I was camping & fishing at White Horse Lake with my daughter, I found this hike. When you enter the Park go left and through the west campgrounds to the Group Camping area. The TH is on the NW quadrant of the lake. It follows the lake for a few hundred yards then goes away from the lake on a nature trail. I stayed along the lake and found various trails as I followed the lake to the east. At the NE quadrant, the trail comes back to the lake. Do not go east and out onto the road (like I did) stay along the lake. The trail continues around the lake to a TH on the South edge of the lake. You could walk through the campgrounds and make a loop. I choose to go back around the Lake so that I could take the side trail to the Sycamore Rim Canyon viewpoint. Well worth the extra effort.
