I headed over to Rathdrum to hike some of the trails there, and to see how close I could get to the summit before snow became an issue. Headed up Westwood Loop, then Frog Spit and a moment on Monarch and Skyline before reaching Hi Frequency. All the downed trees have been cleared.

Reached StormKing Pkwy at the tower, then continued uphill. The ground had been frozen since near the trailhead, and now had occasional ice and snow on it. Nothing of concern. The short connector from the road up to the saddle was where the snow really showed up. That connector is quite steep and rocky and was covered in snow and muddy ice. I carefully made my way uphill, using some boot tracks from probably yesterday and kicking little steps in the mud.

Once at the saddle, the trail was completely snow covered, but the snow was pretty firm, so it was easy hiking on the gentle incline. After a while, the boot prints ended, but I kept going. Eventually, the snow become softer and I was sinking with each step, so I turned around about a half mile and 500 vertical feet from the summit. That final push to the summit is fairly steep, and I was not motivated enough since the clouds were obscuring the views.

Descending was easy, and the steep connector was okay, but tedious. Once below that, there was nothing of difficulty. I took the road farther east towards the saddle on the other side of the mountain, but turned around along the scree slope. A helicopter had been hovering over me, then moved to the saddle, so I didn’t want to hike towards whatever he was looking for.

Took StormKing Pkwy most of the way back down. At one point, I noticed what looked like a brown horse on the ground, a second later I realized it was a moose calf. It hadn’t been dead long, very fresh, obviously eaten by something large. Based on the contents spilling from the intestines, this calf did not die of hunger. I left the area quickly, since whatever (bear? mtn lion?) was eating it was probably still nearby and might come back for another nibble, and since mom might be nearby and probably wasn’t in a good mood.

The helicopter came back after a while, still circling above the saddle. He hovered over me again, but I ignored him. He circled over the saddle for quite a while, then headed back towards the airport. I saw no footprints of anyone else near that saddle, but there are several other roads over there. Took Majestic Passage for the final mile of the descent. I like the trees along that trail. Then finished up on South Hawkhaven which connects back to the parking lot.

Nice workout. Temps were 32 at the start, in the 20s up higher, and 42 at the finish. A few snow flurries, and snow falling on all the surrounding mountains, especially to the east. Saw one e-biker near the trailhead, but nobody else all day.

I try to avoid the Rathdrum Mtn/StormKing trails on weekends, but this morning was cool and drizzly, and I figured an early arrival wouldn't be too crowded. I think the gate opens at 0700, I got there around 0745, and was the first vehicle in the parking lot. I wasn't sure exactly what trails I would do this morning, and a quick look at the updated trail map in the parking lot showed a ton of new trails since I was last here last summer/fall. They've been busy.

I headed up Westwood Loop, which was familiar territory. Always a pretty section of trail. At the top of Westwood, I continued up Frog Spit. I've been on part of Frog Spit before, but the upper part was new. It looks like Frog Spit is still being extended farther up the mountain, but I stopped at the current end of it. Then took Monarch Trail, including a short walk to the end of it to get a full track. Monarch was new to me. Monarch is easy, contouring about the road. All water crossings have bridges. The last bridge was "closed" due to being broken by a falled tree, so I used the tree itself as my bridge.

At the end of Monarch, I headed up StormKing Pkwy, which is always a little dull. Saw some moose tracks in the mud. Once at the radio tower, I decided that was far enough for the morning. The rain was done by this point, and it felt warm. Ditched the rain jacket.

Headed down Hi Frequency, which is also new. Nice enough trail, not too bad of an incline. At the bottom of Hi Frequency, I took Skyline, which I've been on before. It seems like Skyline is intended to be bikes only, but you have to hike at least part of it, and I'm guessing when Frog Spit is done, it'll be the hiking option. There was some blowdown on Skyline anyway, so bikes weren't an issue. Took a short bit of Timber Ridge to close the loop, then finished on Frog Spit and Westwood Loop again.

The parking lot was mostly full by the time I finished, and the parking near the disc golf course was full too. Nice workout, and now that most of the road construction between Rathdrum and my house is done, I'll have to hike over here a little more often.

Rathrum Mtn is a fairly easy nearby summit, and fit the bill for today. Rathdrum Mtn Park is constantly adding new trails, but almost no signage, and I noticed a lot of new trails today. I’ll have to take a day to explore the new options there. Today, I headed up StormKing all the way to the park boundary, then continued up forest roads all the way to the summit. Generally easy hiking, with one short steep section just below a saddle, and the final half mile or so is steeper and rocky.

Good views from the summit. Headed back down on the road, then took one of the new trails back the rest of the way to the parking area, which cut a couple of miles off the hike. Only saw people near the trailhead. Good weather, in the 60s most of the time.

Opted for good mileage close to home today. I don’t like driving thru the town of Rathdrum (actually, I don’t like anything about that town) but the annoyance is short lived.

Headed up Westwood Loop. Then, I was hoping Frog Spit would be the lower part of the shortcut up to the upper portion of Storm King. Lots of new trail work, but it was not the shortcut I was hoping for. Added a half mile of unnecessary hiking. Then a ten foot drop off the embankment down to the road. I held onto the base of a tree, lowered myself as far as I could while still hanging, then dropped the last three feet or so. Covered in dirt and leaves after that. Took the standard route up Storm King. Boring, but easy. Noticed another new trail being cut. Saw a juvenile moose ahead of me. Heard his mom in the brush below, but never saw her. Luckily they both ran downhill.

Once above the park boundary, followed the forest roads up to the summit. Fall colors just starting. Cool breeze. Again, easy hiking. Quick stop at the summit, then headed back down.

Took the upper portion of the same shortcut I was hoping for. Luckily, it is now complete, and ends just south of where I was expecting it to be. Cuts off a ton of extra walking. Steep in places, but not bad. Using this route probably would take a good four miles off the roundtrip to the summit.

Cool temps all day, felt great. Only saw four other hikers, mostly near the trailhead.

Needed some mileage today, but had to be home by early afternoon. Got to the trailhead at 0700. Headed up Westwood Loop, which is still under construction, and has been slightly rerouted every time I’ve been on it in the last seven weeks. Looks like it’s close to being done.

At the top of Westwood, I headed north on Timber Ridge, then Storm King Pkwy, which I followed all the way to where it ends. Half of it had recently been trimmed back, the other half still had knee high vegetation to walk thru. Everything grows fast around here. Noticed the top of Frog Spit trail now reaches Storm King. This was a nice development.

Once out of the park boundary, I took the road to the northeast, across the talus slope, up some switchbacks to the saddle between the summit of Rathdrum Mtn and a seemingly unnamed subpeak marked as 4467 (or something like that, I can’t remember the exact number).

From the saddle, I found a very faint road leading towards the summit of 4467. Lots of vegetation, but minimal thorns. Satellite view had shown a road/trail leading east/west just of the summit, and an old road circling around the north side. Satellite view does not always correspond with reality. Getting up the west side was fine. I wandered over to the summit for a minute, then headed down the east side. No visible route, very steep, tons of vegetation to push thru. Annoying. Finally found the road bed, and followed it around the north side and back west towards the saddle. Full of vegetation, but not terrible. Some nice views.

Once back at the saddle, I could retrace my steps for a while, or follow another old road as a hoped for shortcut. The old “road” quickly narrowed to an overgrown path. Not far from the next road, the path essentially ended in thick vegetation. I opted to head straight down to the road. Annoying, but short.

Once on the road, I headed towards the south slope of Rathdrum Mtn. Clear road, easy walking. Once at the ridge on the south, I started looking for the path down the ridge to my next road. Again, what’s visible on satellite view was overgrown in person. I didn’t want to turn back and follow the road back, mainly because I’m either stupid or stubborn, or both. After some back and forth, I spotted the path and headed steeply downhill. Steep descent, but there was a faint path visible most of the way thru the tall brush.

Got down to the road and followed it back down Storm King. Once back at the new junction with Frog Spit, I decided to see if it went all the way thru. If it did, it would connect to the top of Westwood and save me a couple of boring miles. Nice, pretty brand new trail, clearly designed for mountain bikers. After less than a quarter mile, I ran into a bulldozer clearing the trail, which no longer existed. I chatted with the guy for a moment, he said the route beyond is flagged if I wanted to keep going, but that it was not cleared at all. I had no interest in at least a quarter mile of steep off trail down that drainage (I’ve been there before and knew what lay ahead) so I turned around and got back on Storm King.

Finished on Majestic Passage, which has been re-graded in several places. Saw two guys playing disc golf, and other than the guy on the bulldozer, were the only people I saw all day. Trailhead was still empty when I finished around 1300. Saw one rubber boa, at least forty turkeys, one deer, a few rabbits, and a million grasshoppers. Other than the initial off trail up 4467, I would not repeat any of the other off trail sections I hiked today.

My original plan was a hike in the Selkirk Mtns, since Reagan did not have wrestling practice this afternoon, but I was feeling a little blah this morning and didn’t think I’d be up for 12 miles, 2900’ aeg, and possible snow at the top of the trail. So I opted for something more local, and planned on doing a shorter hike. Final stats indicate otherwise, lol.

First car in the parking lot at 0745. Headed up Westwood Loop, which has seen a ton of new construction since I was last on it a few weeks ago. Felt almost like a different trail. At the road, I turned left to see what the rest of Timber Ridge was like. Kind of boring, dead ends at private property.

Turned around and retraced my steps north and onto StormKing, figuring I’d turn around whenever I got tired or bored. The more I walked, the better I felt, so I kept going. Once up at the road, I stayed right, which was new to me, and gently climbed the east slopes of Rathdrum Mtn. Crossed several talus fields and had some great views. The road switchbacked higher, and I decided to make a balloon loop at the top where I could reconnect to the road on the south slope of the mountain. That would have been a very easy, scenic hike.

At the high point of the road I was on, a cairned path turned north, on an old logging road. I decided to check it out, thinking it might lead to the summit. Steep, but was in good condition at first, clearly a well used path. After a while, it began to fade, then seemingly disappeared at the edge of a talus slope. Looking at satellite view (which is almost useless in the dense vegetation around here) showed no distinct path. One option might have led above the trees above the talus, but looked steep. Another option might have followed the old road bed below the talus, then curled upward once past the talus. I’m guessing this was the more likely option, but unfortunately the old road bed was choked with deadfall, and was not appealing to me.

I opted to traverse across the talus, hoping to pick up a trail on the other side of it. Getting across was fine, kind of fun, but nothing looked great on the other side. Knowing I only had about 200 vertical feet left to summit, and knowing there was a reachable road above me, I opted to head offtrail straight uphill, despite the fact that offtrail travel around here is close to impossible. It was tough, but doable, and I knew it would be shortlived, with a better descent option on the other side.

Quick stop at the summit, then descended the main road. I kept an eye out for potential routes tieing in to the one I had been on, but nothing looked obvious. So it was a boring road walk back down to StormKing, then a descent on StormKing to Majestic Passage, which I took back to the parking lot. Warm by the time I finished, in the 80s. Ended up being a solid hike for the day.

Opted for another nearby hike today. Days of painting still has my arms and legs sore, and there’s still a lot more painting to do. I was the first vehicle at the trailhead, and got started to temps in the mid 50s, no clouds. Headed up StormKing Pkwy and took that all the way up and out of the park boundary.

From there, I headed west on a forest road around the south and west side of the mountain. Up until this point, the incline on the road had been pretty gradual. Once I curved around the north side, it got steep. Felt warm in the sunny spots too. Great views from the summit.

Mostly retraced my steps down. I wss hoping to take a few shortcuts on the descent, but they were all more overgrown. Hopped onto Majestic Passage for the final mile.

Good workout hike, kind of reminiscent of Mt Ord since it’s mostly a road walk. Only saw other people in the final 1.50 miles. Saw one rabbit and one rubber boa. Lots of deer and elk tracks. Temps in the mid 70s when I finished.

Another nearby workout hike. Hit several trails in Rathdrum Mtn Park. Didn’t have any specific goal in mind other than going up to the radio tower near the top of Stormking Parkway Trail. Also hiked on Westwood, Frog Spit, Timber Ridge Lane, and Majestic Passage. Trails are all in good shape, with several of them being old logging roads. Tons of trees and shade, all the drainages had flowing water, but only a few muddy spots on the trails. I think I found a potentially decent route up to the summit of Rathdrum Mtn, and may come back next week if I get a chance to research it a little more before then.

Parking lot was nearly empty when I arrived, but overflowing when I finished. Temps mostly in the upper 50s.

Visited the network of trails in Rathdrum Mountain Park. Nothing is well signed, and I couldn’t find a decent map, but we wandered around enough to satisfy the dog. From what I could tell, we were on Storybook, Storm King, Majestic Passage, and Reservoir Ridge trails, but who really knows. Majestic Passage was pretty nice—a curving trail through the cedar trees along a creek. Some of the trails climb higher up the mountain, which we did not do today, but I’d consider for a future visit. This newer park is a little hard to find, and still a work in progress, but worth hiking if in the area. The locals say it gets a lot of moose activity, and I can see why with all the running water.
