This little loop marks for us the completion of hiking all the trails in the Cave Creek Regional Park. Most of them we've done many, many times but this hike finished the park off in it's entirety. In the photoset is a map of the park and todays loop is the little one on the far west side. My GPS messed up again, (I don't think it likes lithium batteries) so I resorted to an old school photo of a map. :( The pink lines mark all the trails we've completed.

Todays trip was very scenic and we used a route posted by @mt98dew a while back. It involved some minor wash walking and going under a barbed wire fence to exit the park boundary. This allowed us to follow an old double track trail north to then re-enter the park at it's western boundary spur trail. A short climb back up to the Overton Trail and then back down to the parking lot closed the loop.

1st trip
Last weekend before football season starts, so I wanted to get a hike in before a couple Sundays off. I wanted to keep the mileage around the 10 mile mark with the heat still kicking. The CCRA looked to be a good area to be able to do that, plus it's another place where I haven't hiked those trails in over 15 years.

I picked up my friend Ted on the way up and met Brian at the trailhead. Brian had to be done by 11, so he was already there for a half hour by the time we showed up. We headed east on the Go John Trail, then took the Jasper Trail down to the Slate Trail, and took that all the way outside the park to the connecting trails in the preserve and/or private area to the east. The Slate Trail meets a trail that kind of forms a tee. We stopped there and headed back west and took what seems to be labeled the Military Trail to the north and headed back into the CCRA. Along this area we ran into 3 older ladies riding horses who weren't sure where they were going. there were a few trail junctions we encountered that aren't on the Maricopa County maps, so that might have had something to do with their confusion.

In the park, once we got to the Quartz Trail, Brian started to trail run the rest of his route. Ted and I kept a leisurely pace. We ended up taking the Quartz Trail north to the Go John Trail, and finished the loop back around to the trailhead. Saw 6 other hikers and a few bikers. The weather was much more pleasant than my last two local hikes in the heat and humidity.

Great hike today in the Cave Creek Recreational Park. Temps in the 70's. Although we haven't had any rain, the desert in this area still looks fairly green and is such a beautiful desert. Haven't hiked this area in a long time. I will be back soon!

Day 1,
I took both my pups up to Cave Creek Regional park. We did the ClayMine, Overton West Boundary, Jasper trail, and parts of the slate and Go John Trails.
Day 2
On day 1, I hadnt planned on hiking the rest of the park all in one day. If I had planned better, I could have shaved 2 miles off todays hike. I did a lot of backtracking today. Day 2 started out perfect. Great weather with an early start. I only took my Jack Russell (Miss Ellie) with me today. This is her first hike with out my other dog. We did the GO John trail, backtracked to the Quartz trail. Then we did the Flume trail forward and backward. Then the slate trail a little past Cave Creek, then backtracked back to the truck. Miss Ellie did great! We didnt take any real breaks. She stopped running back and forth around the 5 mile mark, and kept pace the rest of the trip. I dont know how dogs do this, but when we got close to the truck she knew we where close to the truck. Her paced picked up the last 1/4 mile. She remembered that part of the trail from 2 days ago.
All the trails in the park are great trails, except the flume trail. The flume trail is hiking on the desert floor. 1 mile of the trail is on an access road.

Miss Ellie learned a valuable lesson.. Dont chase birds into a cactus. http://hikearizona.com/photo=404850 This picture was taken, after I took 20% of the thornes out. She did very well during the surgery. She didnt chase any birds off the trail after that.

Did sections of the Slate, Flume, and Overton trails. Marley met his first horse- and after the initial growl/bark/cower got brave enough to sniff his muzzle, and decided the giant hooved beasts weren't so bad after all.

Took the Slate trail for leisurely New Years Day hike. Not as many people out as expected, except for horse riders. Beautiful day out of the Phoenix smog!!

4 miles. The trail is actually much longer but the trail was not in good condition. We completely forgot about all the fire and flood damage to the area. The day we hiked there were two crews working on the trail. After about 2 miles we lost the trail and decided to head back. We were disappointed since we had to pay $5 to enter the park and there were no signs about the trail damage at the self pay station. There were signs at the trailhead however so I'd recommend checking out the trailhead before deciding if you want to part with your money. I didn't get my money back but we did get a reply back from the Tonto Forest Public Affairs Office after emailing them a complaint. Unfortunately there was a lot of damage and it will require time to fix it. Directions: Drive east from Carefree on Cave Creek Road for 6 miles. The road then becomes Forest Road 24. Continue on for another 12 miles. It's a well maintained gravel road that is OK for cars. The trailhead and parking is just past the Seven Springs picnic and campground areas.

If you live in this part of the valley this is probably a decent day hiking area. I don't think it's worth it to make a drive up though. There are better hikes closer to most of us.

This area would be good for trail running as they are wide trails and easy to navigate. Be on the lookout for Horse and Mtn. Bikes though.

I took the Overton trail and connected to the Go John trail. Overton is quite easy, but the Go John trail gets way dirty. This is a very rocky trail with some steep grades. Watch for horses! I did this loop pretty quickly but it was like 110F so I was a little slower than usual. Have fun. -piv
