After having to cancel our previously planned visit, we made sure to check the wind forecast before heading out this time. Arrived at Tortilla Flat just before sunrise with no other cars parked. We headed off along the use trail to drop into Tortilla Creek - it's a little hidden heading out of the parking area but is very obvious once on it. Once in the drainage, we followed the occasional use trails as we found them or rock hopped our way up. While there are pools present, and light flow across the slickrock section, everything was able to be negotiated while keeping feet dry. We opted to bypass the majority of the extremely large boulders in the lower portion of Peter's Canyon by heading up the breakdown on the left (looking up canyon) - it's a little brushy, but I didn't seem to get any new scrapes. The slickrock section after the boulders clear out was beautiful, with plenty of interconnected pools and channels. We continued up canyon to eventually find ourselves at Peter's Cave. We made the steep scramble up to have a look - flipped through the register (interesting storage situation there)...and was disappointed at the camp debris and trash that had been left behind.

After descending back to the canyon floor, J decided to wait and give his ankle a rest while I headed up canyon go see what I could see. It wasn't too long before I found myself stopped by a pool with the clear sound of a waterfall tucked away behind a turn. Looking at the terrain, it looked like I could scramble up and back down on the left hand side looking up-canyon - as I was scrambling up, I was able to look down to see the waterfall...and contemplated the possibility of a different bypass that didn't require getting so high up on the other side, though it would have required backtracking further back down canyon to attempt access. After getting back in the drainage to have a look at the waterfall from above, I was stopped by a long water-filled corridor. I scrambled back up on canyon left (again, looking up-canyon) to see if I could get past it, but I wasn't enjoying the exposure. I got back down into the drainage to assess the depth of the pool, and dithered about pushing onward directly in the watercourse, but ultimately decided I'd rather stay dry.

The hike back was uneventful, and offered some better opportunities for photos with the cloud cover from the early morning breaking up. Was glad to visit a new-to-me area of the Superstitions. Found plenty of other vehicles at Tortilla flat upon our return, and sounds from the live music carrying up into the upper reaches of the parking lot. Happily, we didn't see any others while we were out exploring.

As an aside, I'm pretty sure my mileage is way off, as is my AEG, but that's what RS calculated - had one incident with straight-lining, not sure what may have caused it. My watch reported a much more modest mileage of 6.14 miles and 1114ft of AEG.

I did this one a few years back at the end of May and made a note to return when there was water. With the rain on Thursday and coming off some more recent rains in the area, I decided to make a return and introduce my wife to the area. Turned out to be a great choice.

Sections of this hike offer some of the best views in the Supes, IMO.

Despite screwing up the start of the hike on my last trip, I made a similar mistake this time (should have read my tripog from last time first ....). This time, we followed the parking lot up the hill. Unfortunately, there is a spur trail that looks established and one naturally assumes that's the way to go. The actual trail entrance is actually pretty obscured. The key is to locate the powerline, as the trail leaves the parking lot and immediately switches back down under the powerline.

Ok, on with the triplog.

After the initial climb, the trail drops into the drainage and essentially ends. From here on, it's streambed navigation and boulder-hopping ....

Plenty of water in the drainage with some very large pools.

Shortly after the turn up to Peter's Canyon, you encounter the large boulder obstacles that block the drainage. For the most part, the best passage is to the right (looking upstream) with one particularly critical rabbit hole that is not obvious, but is marked by a couple of cairns, if you are looking closely. I don't believe I found that rabbit hole last time ....

After navigating the boulder field, there is a fun slickrock area that had some running water and lots of pools. Following the slickrock area the canyon opens up and covers what I considered the least interesting section. It doesn't last long.

Shortly, the canyon curves to the right and narrows up again as Peter's Cave comes into view. This section is simply beautiful, surrounded by towering and jagged rock formations that are often lit up beautifully by the rising sunlight.

A register has been put in the cave with some interesting entries. Some of the rotting camp debris I saw last time was still there.

Beyond the cave, the canyon continues to offer fantastic views, with another set of small secondary caves a bit further up the canyon on the right side. In these caves, someone constructed a decent little chair out of tree limbs and some paracord.

Beyond that is the waterfall and large pool that had water in it last time (even at the end of May). This time, the falls were running, though not spectactularly. The scramble up left to get above the falls is fun and a bit spicy.

We ate lunch at the falls and then planned to go further, but with the water, the canyon created a swimmer pool, and we weren't that committed :-). We attempted a bypass by climbing up steeply to the left. It's probably doable, but required a little more spice than we were up for. So, we called it good and made our way back.

Didn't encounter another soul the entire time.

Truly a lovely area.

We had an injury a little ways up from the turnoff so turned around but made it past the cascades which is one of my favorite spots. Lots of loose, slippery rocks out there, I wasn’t the injury but I definitely fell in the water twice.

Slow pace due to rocks being wet and lots of photo stops. Total time 5 hours. We turned around when we got into the 2nd narrows, less than a quarter mile past the cave. Water levels low enough that we would’ve stayed dry if it weren’t for the waist-height wet grass. Only minimal bushwhacking was necessary.

Woke up early and headed up the Apache Trail to do some hiking out of the Tortilla TH, however, once I got to Tortilla Flat, I changed my mind and decided to hike the beautiful Peter's Canyon instead. Cloudy, sprinkles and very humid when I started up the small ridge before heading down into Tortilla Creek. No trail once your down in the creek it's about a 3 quarters of a mile boulder hop to the canyon junction. House size boulders fill the initial part of the canyon. I opted for the bypass on the left side since I was solo and did not want to risk slipping and falling as a slip from a house size boulder would not end up very well. Bypass was very overgrown and full of prickly bushes mostly catclaw which trashed my legs. Got past that portion and was ready for the first swimmer, however, there was only mud there. Last time I did this the water was waist high, but not this time. Made it to my favorite part of the canyon where it opens up and is lined with beautiful bedrock which was filled with deep pools of water. Stopped there for a break and decided to head back at this point as the humidity and boulder hopping had done me in. Sun came out on the way back and warmed the temps up a bit but the wind felt great. I've hiked Peter's Canyon multiple times now and it's beauty never ceases to amaze me.

Another weekend ..., another canyon to explore in the Supes. Last Saturday, I hit up Lower Fish Creek. On the way back, I decided a return trip was in order to do some exploring from Tortilla Flats.

I parked at the back of the parking area and initially got turned around as to where to find the trail. At first, I continued up the "road" from the parking area, but immediately noted that it was off track from the GPS route I had downloaded. Thinking that the track just started from the Tortilla creekbed, I reversed course and walked back down to the creek crossing and up the creek. I saw that I was now off track in the other direction and ended up climbing up the side of the drainage to finally intersect with the trail.

As it turns out, the trail DOES start by going up the road from the parking area, but it's just rerouted a bit from the the official GPS route. (The return on my posted route shows the correct/current trail alignment).

OK on with the story ...

The first section of the trail goes over a hill and cuts off a couple of bends in Tortilla Creek before dropping you off again in the bed of Tortilla Creek. The creek walking from this point to the turn off to Peters Canyon is so-so in terms of scenery. Very little water left in the creek (a few small, stagnant pools).

Once you make the turn off up Peters Canyon, the scenery gets more interesting--as does the route. Navigating the boulder field was a fun challenge, followed by the slickrock section, where pools of water became a little more frequent (all getting more stagnant by the day, but filterable if needed).

The approach to the cave, and the 1/2-3/4 mile beyond are the highlights of this hike. The canyon narrows up, and the morning light on the canyon walls made for some nice scenery.

The cave was kind of cool. I expected it to be further up on the side of the canyon, but it's really just a very short climb. At the cave itself, there is a rotting sleeping bag, fuel cannisters, and a bunch of trash from someone who apparently made this a home for a bit (and then definitely "left a lot of traces" :( ).

In addition to the "big" cave, there are several other smaller caves along this section of the canyon. Just beyond the big cave, there are marks on the canyon walls indicating the location of some impressive waterfalls if you happen to catch them at the right time.

Speaking of waterfalls, not too far upstream from the cave, in the creekbottom itself, there is a narrow section where a nice waterfall drops into a deep pool. The waterfall was dry today, but the deep pool still had a fair amount of water, though diminishing daily. Bypass of the falls is on the left (going upstream) via a semi-exposed scramble.

All of this made me take a mental note to revisit this area after some good runoff. I'm sure it's delightful with a good water flow.

After nearing the end of the gps track on the Peters Cave route, I retraced my steps to the point where the creek makes a sharp turn and decided to attempt the crossover into the Tortilla Creek drainage by an off-trail scramble over the intervening ridge. I initially started scrambling up the south side of the drainage, but then thought the north side looked more promising (with less vegetation). So I gave up a little elevation gain to cross over the drainage and try the other side.

I was successful in making the ridgeline traverse to Tortilla Creek, but it was a hard-won battle, and I have the scrapes, scratches and cuts to prove it. In short, it was not fun, and I don't know that I would recommend this route (maybe stick with my initial south side approach?). That said, I can at least say that the traverse is do-able. And that is something, as I feared I would bushwhack my way down the drainage on the Tortilla side, only to find myself cliffed out and having to retrace my steps through the scratchy jungle I had just traversed. Thankfully, the backtracking was limited, though I will say that my final descent into the drainage that eventually dropped me into Tortilla Creek did involve an 8-10 foot drop on a sheer section that had me hanging onto a tree branch for some support and which, if the branch had not held, I might have been in for an unpleasant fall.

Once I (finally!) reached Tortilla Creek, I took a few minutes to shake out my shoes and de-burr my socks, which had accumulated quite a following during the bushwhack.

From there, I decided to head up-creek, as the topo suggested there were some narrows further upstream.

There was also a lot more water in this section of Tortilla Creek, though nothing really running--just lots of pools.

The area turned out to be a lot more bouldery than I was anticipating (much like the entrance to Peters Canyon). I came across a pair of hawks/eagles/falcons (not sure) who were protecting a nest up high in an old cottonwood tree. They were not very happy about my presence and repeatedly circled overhead, screeching loudly. Beautiful birds. Wishing I had had a camera with a better zoom to capture them.

A little further on and still navigating major boulder falls, and considering my water situation and the increasing heat of the day, I decided that I would need to reserve further exploring up canyon to another visit.

I turned around and headed back down canyon. Below where I had dropped over the ridgeling from Peters Canyon, Tortilla Creek was chocked with a solid field of reeds, which made navigation more brushy than I had expected--but at least the reeds were not poky!!

The bottom part of Tortilla Creek was just a grind and after all the bushwhacking and creekbed travel on constantly uneven surfaces/shifting rocks, I was happy to finally reconnect with the short trail over the shortcut back to the parking area.

Didn't encounter another soul on the trail.

It was approaching 100 degrees at that point, and I was glad to have finished up the hike. I'll be back in this area after some good monsoon rains.

The drive back by Canyon Lake revealed the expected Memorial Day weekend zoo.

It’s been many moons since I have ventured into this side of Peter’s Canyon. My hiking friends wanted to visit some place new, so so figured this would be a good one to introduce them to this part of the Superstitions.

With the expected 100+ high, I didn’t think we would make it all the way to the Cave. That’ll be another time in the cooler months. There was a slight flow along Tortilla Creek as we took off from the Tortilla Flats parking area. As we climbed up the little hill and down to the creek on the other side, the flow was no more than a trickle. There were large algae filled pools everywhere.

We made our way to the Peter’s/Tortilla junction and started up. The creek was flowing more steady in here and there was no stagnant pools and lots of little falls. The youngest child of my friends was not having it for much more boulder hopping right at the start of the big rocks, so us guys went up past the the first gigantor boulders and decided to turn around there. There were several large pools we would have to wade through. Fall or winter for those.

We made it back the same way we came in and headed back to the truck.

It was humid and getting a little toasty for my tastes by the time we made it to “The Flats”. My friends really enjoyed the canyon though. It is an amazing spot for sure!

I chose Peter’s Canyon Loop hoping to stay and hike in town a while longer before it gets too hot. With temps creeping into the high 90s and little chance of water, this was not an easy day hike. Hiking during the dry season is a blessing and a curse. There’s little/no salvageable water to capitalize on, so I had to carry. Also the canyon is much more scenic with water flowing. The upside is that it’s a bit easier to pass through when dry.

I started 6:30 am at Tortilla Flat and did a counter clockwise loop through the canyon, along Peter’s 105, FR213 and back on the 88 about 11.5 hours later. I was conserving but misjudged and ran out of water at Tortilla, so caught a lift the last few miles back to Tortilla Flat. I could have made it but decided not to press my luck.

Part of the reason I picked this hike is that I heard rumors that the infamous red-paint-tagger had been through Peter’s Canyon. Good news, there were no red painted cairns within the actual canyon. While back on the 105 I was motivated to remove another 100+ bright red eyesores from that section. This was the segment from Peter’s Canyon back to where I turned off for Music Mountain recently. I suspect that the trail from Peter’s Canyon up to the Mesa is probably still filled with ugly red rocks. To be honest it was pretty exhausting correcting the vandalism on an already long day hike and really slowed me down. Other than that it was a great look at Peter’s in the month of May and a trip that I’ll probably always remember. Check the photoset for more details.

I trip up to Peters Cave. The hike of the creek is the same as I remember. The area just past the cave was washed down to the bedrock and you'd need to wade in the water to get past. It used to be easy to climb up on the right side not now. I threw a few rocks in to see how deep the water was but it was too deep for stepping stones. The the hike I we went up a side canyon and stopped at El Gato's lair. A nice day to be out and not other hikers were seen.

I led a group of eight for a hike of Tortilla Canyon and Peter's Canyon, turning around at Peter's Cave.

There was more water in these canyons than I recall in the past. The water was flowing and avoiding it took more time than normal. Some of us didn't try to avoid it, preferring to wade through the water instead of bushwhacking or looking for some other route. In particular, several of us did this on the way back, skipping a section on the bank (not far from the cave) that we'd always bushwhacked in the past. For those of us who waded, the water was up to waist deep in some spots, probably deeper if the pour-offs weren't avoided.

As usual, it was incredibly scenic; we all enjoyed our time in these canyons.

Took another trip into Peter's yesterday for my yearly visit. Never seen this much water in the canyon all the way to the cave before which made it even that much slower of a trek. Eventually we decided to just wade through it with some of the pools being waist deep and higher. Wanted to go check out the waterfall to see if it was flowing, but it was already late in the day so we decided against it. We did come across a pretty big group about a mile in, however, they turned around at the sight of the house sized boulders. Tons of coyote and cat tracks but no other signs of wildlife. Always a great workout and the views in the canyon are always awesome to look at.

Small group from our snowbird park visited Peters Cave today. Surprised to see a log book at the cave and quite a few visitors signed in for what I thought was out of the way. A bit of a "rock hop" but could be worse.
