I decided to do this hike today, which was a repeat of a hike that I did a couple of years ago.

There was nothing remarkable about the hike, but it was a nice wilderness hike. It was cool at the start, but it warmed up more than I like on the way back.

I got to check out the rerouted portion of the trail that @mazatzal mentioned in a recent trip report. The rerouted section was nice -- good tread with no brush whatsoever encroaching on the trail.

I had issues with flatlining on my samsung phone, so I used stats that I recorded with gaia on a google phone. I included these 2 tracks as well as a track that I recorded on garmin.

To be fair, I have also been having some issues with gaia flatlining on the samsung phone. I haven't had flatlining problems on the google phone, but until a couple of days ago map rotation did not work on that phone. Out of the blue the map rotation issues all of a sudden went away on the google phone with gaia; I am not yet sure if map rotation now works on the google phone with RS.

A group of us spent one more day on the reroute 1.5 miles north from Cross F trailhead.
We widened a couple of narrow areas, pulled a few more roots and moved some piles of brush.

A group of us completed the reroute 1.5 miles north from Cross F trailhead. We opened the new trail and closed off the old route.
We will do one more day to make adjustments and “polish” the final route :)

A group of us “corridor brushed” an 800’ reroute about 1.5 miles in from the cross f trailhead. The reroute avoids a washed out, veed section of trail that also gets muddy after rain / snow. Great weather :)

An easy start to the year. With evening plans in place, the hike for the day needed to be such that I could get home and cleaned up to head back out. When J suggested we head north from 87 to check out this section of the AZT, I was happy to agree.

Temps were cool, but not as cold as they were when we did the bit of passage 21 southbound. Our feet got a bit damp as we headed through the dew covered plants on our way to the drainage before walking through the large culvert under 87. Was dismayed, but not surprised, to see a bunch of graffiti marking the walls.

Once we hit the trail northbound, we found the tread soft with the ground saturated from recent rains. The walking was sometimes a little slowed with sticky mud underfoot - while it accumulated somewhat on our shoes, it would also shed as we walked, flinging mud clods hither and yon. The miles heading up towards the Cross F TH cross lands used for grazing - and as such, there were plenty of gates and a number of cows encountered. Views got better the further north we went, heading closer to the Mazatzals.

As we approached the power lines (and the road), we were surprised to discover a small herd of horses clustered around some juniper trees. We continued onward to the Cross F trailhead junction before turning back to take a break where the trail crosses a creek. As we were sitting there, we discovered a game cam secured up in a tree and pointed right at our break spot.

After our snack break, we made our way back towards the trailhead. The horses had dispersed somewhat, with a number of them milling around the road crossing. We saw a lot more cows on the way back out vs what we spotted on the way in. The ravens also seemed to be out to play in the thermals, along with a lone hawk. There were a number of butterflies flying around, though they weren't proving cooperative for photography. It was great to be able to get out and get some relaxed miles in to start off the year.

Other people: A few vehicles at the Cross F TH along with one hunter heading up the hillside from the trail not far from the Cross F junction.

Pretty isolated wildflower activity, save for the storks bill which seems to be happily in bloom for pretty much the length of this hike right now.

Good sized pools in the drainage - didn't hunt for the actual spring due to overgrowth and the area looking like it would be boggy/muddy to explore.

Four of us did Sunflower trail as a shuttle hike. We left a vehicle on the old Beeline at Sunflower and drove around to Cross F ranch trailhead. We took Little Saddle Mtn trail to the AZT and then took that south back to Sunflower.
Only saw 3 hunters, all wanting to get a white tail buck. We saw a group of does just after we saw the hunters! But I think at least one of the hunters had already seen those.

Started from SR 87 parking (N-side road) and went to the underpass and brushed everything encroaching on the trail for the first half mile to the first gate.

Just after I started a single F-35 screamed by not very far above me! I grabbed my phone as I was expecting a second one to follow but no second jet :(

Saw a SOBO through hiker from Germany, she was disappointed about starting at the south rim and said she would have delayed to another year except her flight was non-refundable.

Started from Cross F Ranch Trailhead. Took the connector to the AZT and went south. Did some brushing at the creek crossing and then headed south to the tank. Cleared one deadfall on the way back.

When I started there were 9 APS / contractor trucks (Progressive something) some with trailers and ATVs at the trailhead. Apparently, inspecting the transmission line along FR 393.

On my way back I took FR393 back down to the trailhead and ran into 6 Maricopa Sheriff S&R trucks coming up FR 393 at the gate. I asked the last driver if they were doing a search for someone and he said no just on patrol!
I told him I would get the gate, he seemed happy about that!

Day Four:
So much for our initial plan of hiking 4 days in the Sierra Ancha...

Since avoiding the US 60 bridge construction was an absolute, driving South from Young into the Sierra Ancha for another hike only to have a longer drive back up to AZ 260 afterward didn't make much sense, so we decided just to start heading home and see what (if anything) comes to mind along the way.

Nothing caught our fancy before Payson where we stopped to top up with the (usually) cheaper gas, but the moment I stopped at the pump and saw it was the same price as at home, I decided to skip it. So after a quick stop at Noley's Books Art & Whatnot for some Anasazi Beans, we set off South on AZ 87.

While neither of us had the enthusiasm such that we just had to do a hike, or at least not from the first options which came to mind (Deer Creek, Gold Ridge, Ord, etc.) so we kept going... until just past Mount Ord, when AZT #22 from Sunflower might be the last decent option. And just like that the decision was made.

We started on the West side of AZ 87 where just a step or two over the barbed-wire fence and we were on our way. The tread was reasonably soft from overnight sprinkles(?) but not wet or muddy so nothing even close to what we experienced on our first AZT #22 hike at the end of December 12/31/22 after the re-route earlier in the year... like 4-5" of mud on the bottom our boots.

Anyway, with that reroute the elevation gain was minimal (good for how lazy we felt) so it seemed like we were just out for a stroll, which for us today was only as far as the unnamed water tank, where we stopped for a snack before heading back.

The only thing of note that comes to mind was the number of AZT gates & rollovers we encountered. Don't get me wrong, that's not a bad thing (especially with all the fences along the way) but it just seemed like a few minutes after passing through one, here comes another. But no complaints.

Oh wait, as I posted the photos I realized I missed something else of note, at least in Tracey's mind... she saw a good-sized Gopher Snake on the trail, claiming I must have stepped right over it, but I'm pretty sure it moved across just as she arrived at that spot, because I was actually pretty focused on the path as it was a bit rocky there. Whatever, by time I turned around to grab a photo, it was gone... well, all but the end of the tail.

In the end, although we had PLANNED for 4 hikes in theSierra Ancha, technically we would only have done one hike in the Sierra Ancha, however that is defined. But no matter, by staying in the Air BnB instead of camping (likely wet camping at that) we enjoyed the relaxation it provided.

Avg/Max HR = 85/119

A simple out-and-back from McFarland to the LSM/SM intersection.
Perfect weather for the hike... mid-50's to start topping out at 70.
A tiny trickle of water close to the trailhead, followed by pools of water every so often for the first mile or so. Met/passed no hikers while Northbound.

We stopped for a 15 minute lunch break about .5 mile Southbound at a drainage featuring multi-colored boulders to sit on. I thought of taking a photo or two of the boulders while sitting there but it was 1/2 mile later before I realized I forgot... Nope, not going back.
On the return leg I cast a glance in the direction of Lion Mountain, something on my to-do for over a dozen years, but for whatever reason it never made the do it now! list so it's likely not gonna happen. (I've perused enough triplogs/photosets it's almost like I've been there)

Met NOBO through hikers: A solo guy, a couple, another solo guy, two old farts, another older couple. The first guy was quite chill, the couple was almost chill, the second guy was NOT in a good mood, the old farts were enjoying it (after taking the weekend off in Phoenix and getting a ride to the LSM TH.) and the last couple was easy come easy go.

Between the old farts and the last couple we encountered 4 equestrians with 6 horses. They appeared to have stopped when they saw us coming at a spot we could easily pass the first 2 horses, but that was it. As we got to past the first two horses, we expected them to start moving again to get past us. But they just sat there, unmoving and saying nothing, so I started walking through a small gap in the holly until I would need to push through a dead/hanging branch of holly. I stopped, waiting for them to move but still nothing. So, I pushed through the holly and the horse started freak out bucking like crazy, but at least the gal was able to hang on. She said it was probably because of the mask on my face (my balaclava) but I've got news for her, I wasn't even looking in her direction so the horse could not see me. I'm almost positive the reason was because it sounded just like a rattlesnake when I pushed the branch away. And none of this drama would have transpired if the equestrians had simple ridden past us at the wide spot.

Whatever, we experienced no more drama for the rest of the hike... I'm pretty sure my mind wandered and my legs were in robot mode as I don't recall much over the last mile or so. But no matter, it was another great-to-be-outdoors day.

Surprisingly the Sunday noon traffic on Bush Highway was pretty chill this time.
