Joined the Estrella Trailblazers for a hike on Estrella Mountain Regional Park trails this morning. The 9 of us started from the Nature Center then climbed Quail trail to Saddle, Baseline clockwise, bonus round the mountain loop, Toothaker over to the rodeo grounds to check out the construction progress, Rainbow Valley, Connector back to Saddle, Quail back to the Nature Center. Saw a couple of families and a girl with a cute hoo hoo poker-a-poo (I think that's what they're called)

Met up with the Estrella Trailblazers for a hike from the Estrella Mountain Regional Park's Nature Center. It was Esther's 72nd birthday and special treats were promised at the end of the hike. We did a clockwise lollipop loop on Quail, Saddle, Baseline, Rainbow Valley, and back on Quail. 9 hikers total including myself. Saw a bunch of other hikers and a couple of bikers out on the trails. Perfect morning for a hike.

Looking to sneak in a shorter but challenging ride before it got too hot. This great loop fit the bill perfectly. Saw 2 trail runners and 2 mountain bikers on Toothaker, nobody on Rainbow Valley or Horseshoe. No clouds, no shade, all sun = HOT!

Took advantage of the beautiful morning and got out for a pre-work ride. Saw a wedding party getting pictures taken near the rodeo grounds. Other than that, just one couple out with their doggies.

We thought we would see if there were any wildflowers out here, there were some patches with flowers, but I think we may have missed the peak of the Poppies for this location.
Brittle bush were in bloom, but there are not a whole lot of those here in this park.

First time doing Toothaker / Rainbow Valley in the clockwise direction. I found the climbs much easier in this direction! Only saw two other mountain bikers. Dozens of hikers out this morning. Great temps and blooming fields.

Kind of a slow Jog at times but really wanted to catch the sunrise from the lookout spot on Rainbow Trail. Enjoyed a PB&J for 5 minutes while viewing the sunrise! :) :)

I spend late fall and winter hiking closer to Phoenix. The coldest I can remember hiking in Phoenix was 32℉ at South Mountain in 2017. The coldest I’ve seen in the low desert was 27℉ in the Butler Valley, south of Alamo Lake: There was even snow on the ground. 🥶

The coldest I’ve actually hiked in, was 30℉ on the South Mountain in Maryland, while hiking the Appalachian Trail, and again in St. Vith, Belgium (where it was -1℃ at the local bank). In the latter case, I didn’t even have a windbreaker and, to compound the fun, it sleeted. St. Vith [ photoset ] , that late May morning, was officially the coldest place in Europe — even colder than Norway!

It is ironic, then, that it was 34℉ today when I planned to hike Coldwater Trail in Estrella Mountain Regional Park. I’d been on Coldwater twice before, inbound, so today I would head out on it, go a ¼ mile west on Gadsden Trail, then 1.6 miles north on Toothaker Trail, before looping 4.2 miles back to the rodeo arena on Rainbow Valley Trail.

Because it was New Year’s Day, “rush hour” traffic was very light, so I cruised west on Indian School Rd. to Avondale. I only saved one dashcam capture, and I think he may have been a late drunk. As it was still dark, I stopped for hashbrowns, biscuits & gravy at Waffle House. 🤗

The first mile on Coldwater, to the secondary horse lot, was mostly in shade cast by Knobb Hill (aka Hill 1801 on the topo).

Estrella Mountain Regional Park, especially in cold months, does not have a lot of photo ops, other than saguaro. (No flowers.) As a result, I was rolling tape for my hiking video, because as a “slide show” it would have been less than a minute long. So, I took a break on the saddle on Toothaker Trail to record voiceover bits to make the end result more interesting. Also, the temperature was finally tolerable to where I could remove my hoodie and woolie cap.

It was nearly 11:00 a.m. when I turned onto Rainbow Valley Trail, so I started seeing other hikers — presumably without hangovers — on a regular basis. 🥳

The west end of Dysart Trail intersects Rainbow Valley Trail a mile north of the saddle. Just past Dysart, I went off trail in one of the larger washes for pee break privacy, a snack, and to record more voiceovers. Plus, the wash had shade, which is otherwise in short supply in Estrella Mountain Regional Park.

I thought Rainbow Valley Trail was shorter than it actually is, so it seemed to drag on forever. The final mile of Rainbow Valley Trail was a steady stream of people and dogs, making it hard to tape video without looking like a goober.

I took a short break at a picnic table after I finished. Instead of a hiking beer, my refreshment was a V-8: No sense in tempting any cops on the ride home who might still be monitoring the New Year’s chaos … 😉

Met up with my neighbor Craig for a EMRP ride this morning. Decided on Rainbow Valley and Toothaker. Temps and humidity were up and planning on using Dysart as a bailout if needed. Things were good when we made it to Dysart so we continued up the big hill to the saddle and down the other side to Toothaker. Took Toothaker back to the arena and called it good. Treated myself to Dunkin Donuts afterwards :)

Got out for a late morning mountain bike ride. Purchased an annual Maricopa park pass at Usery last week when we did the ridgeline trail. Wanted to put it to good use and ended up torturing myself at EMRP. The trails north of Dysart were nice enough to ride on, heading south, WOW, just rocks rocks rocks. I did end up pushing my bike through quite a few sections. Felt good when I got back to the truck. Even better when I got home and my wife cooked up some bean and cheese burritos!

This was my first trip into the Estrellas. We started on Rainbow Valley Trail and did a counter-clockwise loop. Second half views into the Estrellas were definitely much better than the first part. The miles were relatively flat and easy so we were able to knock this out pretty quickly to have more time to eat and relax all day. :)

A friend and I have begun training for the Bataan Death March Memorial Ruck which will be held on the 19th of March in White Sands New Mexico. The event is 26.2 miles with 35lb ruck sacks on.

Estrella Park offers a great venue for us to conduct this training. There was very little traffic early in the morning. In fact, I do not think we saw another person until we made our way back to the trail head. The weather was perfect. There was a storm coming in just East of us from the South. I love watching the clouds "scrape" the tops of mountains. What an incredible day!

I have done this loop 30+ times but hadn't done it since knee surgery in August. This used to be my speed trail run work out but I knew once I did it again, I would know how much power I have lost in my legs I have lost and knee. It was as bad as I though as I was about 20 minutes off my best time. Still over all I am grateful that I can still go out so I will take it. Hopefully as 2017 progresses I get some of it back but I know it will never be the same.

Rick wanted to build up my arms, so we went and loaded a load of wood, Told him let's hit Estrella Park while we're this close. Forgot my Parks Pass, so as I was talking to the Attendant, he informs me that Estrella was the 1st Park in the County System opened in 1964 and is the 2nd largest Park in the County. Seen one Biker and a couple of hikers before we got back to the TH. I can see why the runners and bikers enjoy this Park. Reminds me of Usery --well used. If we go back I'll suggest White Tanks, and see what they are all about :)

Bob agreed to help me load some firewood in Buckeye, so we thought we would take the opportunity to check out the Estrella Mountain area. This is a great mountain bike trail, but not too much for the hiker in my opinion. Not much in the way of views or shade on this trail, still had fun though.
