My wife and I checking another of Warren’s 100 Hikes off the list. This is another one I cannot understand why he or anyone would choose it as one of the 100 best hikes in the state! But it’s done. I’m the isolation was nice however I will admit! Didn’t contact a single person out there all day. Love hikes where you know it’s just you, and you have the whole place to yourself!! One other little cool thing was seeing the long eared rabbits out there. Ran into three through the day.

This was a hike to Peak 2813, the highpoint of the North Maricopa Mountains Wilderness. The unnamed peak has its spot elevation marked on topo maps, and it has prominence of 1,253 feet.

We started and ended the hike at the Margies Cove East TH. Getting to the trailhead is not straightforward these days as the "8000" roads in the area are officially closed to motor vehicles at the present time. However, I was able to get a "Letter of Agreement" from the BLM that allowed me to drive to the trailhead. Even with the Letter, I was not able to take the direct route to the trailhead because Road 8002 was closed south of Road 8003 to Highway 238. Instead I had to take Road 8004 to Road 8003, and take that over to Road 8002. From there I drove north on Road 8002 to Road 8002A, which I took to the Margies Cove East Trailhead.

We started out on the Margies Cove Trail and left it not too far past a wildlife guzzler. We made our way through a drainage, and then climbed the steep and slippery south slopes to the summit. There was lots of grus gravel on the steep ascent, which was very, very slippery. We had to scramble on and around some boulders near the top, but we got there. After enjoying the views and eating lunch, we headed back. On the way back we were slightly east of our ascent route, and it the descent went much better than the ascent.

There were a few poppies blooming out there and even a couple of lupine were blooming. I would not be surprised if this area has a good wildflower show by the end of the month.

I figured with all the water being released into the Salt River system, this would be a good time to see how things looked at historic Gillespie Dam along the Gila. It was. :) Since I was in the area, I drove over to Margies Cove West trailhead, since I had never been. There are a few sites at the small campground by the trailhead, but all I can say is that is quite the drive just to use a remote toilet. Nice isolation out there, but nothing that excited me. After Margies Cove, it was on to the main attraction. Pretty impressive show of water I must say! It was amazing to see the long ribbon of water reflecting the late afternoon sun all the way down highway 85 to its turn to the west at Gila Bend. :D

Got an invite from my favorite Steelers fan to join him on this hike. I have never hiked in this area and since we both have been vaccinated, why not!

The drive out along HWY 85 and the series of dirt roads into the Sonoran National Monument was uneventful. We set off to see how far we could go, with a plan to explore the Brittlebush Trail a little as well.

This area is short on flashy scenery, but offers up some decent views. The hike is along an old jeep road and a wash. We could have continued up to the higher section of the hike, but opted to hang a right and explore the Brittlebush Trail a little.

The Margies Cove trail is flat and gets interesting when it goes into a little sandy slot canyon. The mile or so we hiked down the Brittlebush Trail was a more scenic area for sure. We both thought this area resembles part of the San Tan MRP.

The utter lack of rain lately provided no wild flowers except some saguaros starting to bloom. Looking at other triplogs for this area, I will try and time my next visit with a wetter winter/spring to see some flowers.

Lots of deer and coyote scat along the trail, but only a hawk, some ground squirrels & bunnies and some ever present buzzards present. We did come a across a wounded gopher snake in the road on the way out. It appeared to be barely alive after being run over by a vehicle. :(

In spite of the sporadic cooler winds and clouds, the heat got to me a little towards the end. It was probably in the 90's by then. The heat always reminds me I don't fair well when it starts getting hotter.

A nice and long hike, excellent exercise and good times with Mr DarthStiller, as usual.

I wanted to hike the Brittlebush Trail because I read the description in the Charles Liu 60 Hikes book. But the southern trailhead has been indefinitely closed for well over a decade now it seems due to smuggling activity, or something like that. The only option was to go to Margies Cove and hike in from there. I wasn't about to do a 20+ mile hike, especially with the weather warming up. I decided to head in to the junction with the Brittlebush Trail and hike a small portion of that. I hadn't hike with Andy in over a year, so I asked him if he was interested. Since he's still dealing with repairs on his vehicle from his previous week's misadventure, he was in.

There is one small segment of singletrack that heads south from the trailhead. then it follows a dirt road that eventually fades into a wash, which then fades into a slot canyon. The further up we got, the sandier the wash got, which I didn't appreciate a whole lot. The scenery is the typical Sonoran desert. A lot of the mountains nearby were similar to Piestewa Peak.

At the junction we got onto the Brittlebush Trail and headed south on that for a little over a mile. That was another nice section of singletrack. I looked at the maps and it looks like maybe at some point it may also turn into was since it goes between a narrow pass of 2 mountains. This north section of Brittlebush looks very similar to the southern part of the San Tan park.

On our way back we did a little short cut from Brittlebush into the wash and saved close to a half mile. The clouds kept the sun from getting too hot, but by the end it was still a little toasty. I finished nearly 300 oz of water by the time we finished, so it was a sneaky kind of heat. Andy was spent, but made it home without significant incident. Nice to hike with friends again as life gets back to normal.

As usual, I had the 66,000 acres of wilderness to myself today. I hiked the Margies Cove Trail from the western trailhead to its highpoint and back, and a short distance down the Brittlebush trail.

I took some fun pictures. See my photoset.

The wide open spaces of the bajadas and valley plain were a little tiring, but the trail does follow a canyon for a ways that was pleasant and cool.

This desert is amazingly clean. I saw almost no litter. But I was annoyed to see a lot of motorbike tracks on the trail from about 4.5 miles in from the trailhead. They seem to have come from the closed eastern trailhead.

I was looking for some easy miles. After last year's marathon run I was looking forward to a little more leisurely paced loop. The extra 11 minutes for the loop was more relaxing. Definitely recommend.

All the washes ran this week, but there was only a little existing flow in the canyon, and one very unexpected pool in the flats that Lily got to cool off in.

Poppies were minimal in the usual spots. But there was tons of brittlebush on the hillsides and a a plethora of lupine. The highlight area was both sides of the last pass about 3-4 miles from the end with both lupine and poppies together. Big poofy clouds teased around, but never gave us a break, and despite being a very pleasant 70-degree day, there were a couple of times it was a touch warm. Saw 4 or 6 deer, they were elusive, so not sure if a pair doubled up on us.

Coronavirus panic status update: There was no toilet paper in the bathroom.

Aromatic creosote upon arrival. Imagine walking 2 miles to South Mountain. Then walking around the front Ma Ha Tuak Range. That pretty much sums up this hike.

Definite signs of atv/cycle tracks on trail, which is a sand wash, at times. Perhaps why the southern and east access has been closed. Assumed illegal trafficking but maybe it's off road activity. Sonoran National Monument signage driving in was sparkly new so maybe they're just working on that or all of the above.

Blanco chased rabbits and repeatedly smoked the 4.31 second 40-yard best @ Combine 2019... with occasional front paw cholla needles!

The hike was "nice" in fabulous weather. It's close to home and I love the Sonoran Desert. That said, enough of Margies Cove unless Sheep Mountain is in the mix.

It was great to meet Mark and see fellow HAZ'rs, sorry it was the most forgettable hike ever...lol

Drive
Road in has a high center and occasional deep cut ravine crossings. Used the BLM directions heading in. Tried the Google directions out. A hundred yard stretch of cobblestone consistency deep rocks suck you in like quicksand on the overpass. Wouldn't suggest without 4WD. Enjoyed the sharp ridged mountains, then realized it's what makes up Margies Peak.

Started just after 7:30am. Mostly cloudy to start, but when the sun peeked out, it felt warm and muggy. Mostly level hike, although the miles in the wash use different muscles. We started seeing wildflowers a couple of miles in: there wasn’t any real concentration of them, but a nice variety over the course of the hike. The off trail portion was easy hiking, and a welcome relief to be hiking on hard packed ground after being in the sandy washes. We went over a couple of saddles, taking short breaks at the top of each. By then, the clouds had thickened, providing a few light sprinkles and a pleasant breeze. Good to see everyone again, and to meet Mark, I enjoyed doing a hike that was easy enough to allow for steady conversation.

Nice day to do the Maricopa Mountain race track. Pleasant hike along the Margies Cove and Brittlebush Trails along with a section of off trail. About 50 % in washes, 50 % on trail and 50% off Trail. I know that's 150% but the section of wash walking made the 16 miles seem more like 24. I've lived in the upper Sonoran Desert my whole life but this hike gave me a taste of the Lower Sonoran Desert. Much harsher environment. The washes were a little hard to walk in but luckily they had run recently so you could find a little hard pack in them that made the walking easier. The trail and cross country were fairly easy. The one saddle we came to was fairly easy too, in fact we were walking so fast down the wash I think I just coasted to the top on my self momentum. Beautiful scenery and with a little cloud cover made this hike great. I haven't seen a desert I didn't like with maybe a couple sections near El Centro California.

It was nice to finally be able to put faces to some of the people I have been communicating with on HAZ. Great company. Also really enjoyed the company of two of the greatest hiking dogs I have had the pleasure to hike with, Blanco and Rowdy.

Saturday trail run in the N Maricopas. I had only been out here once before, and never for the promised spring superbloom. It was a little disappointing. There's a a solid 3 mile approach just to get across the boring part of this one and see a flower. And you'll have to do the same on the way back. Nonetheless, it's pretty scenic once you get back there. Flowers were there to be found, though only a couple of us ever took the opportunity to stop and smell them. Seemed everybody was in a hurry or whatever. [ youtube video ]

It was nice to meet Mark, and I guess to hike with the others again. ;)

We went looking for wild flowers and as others have mentioned a fast pace. I was more intestested in the wild flower section especially in the first 6 miles but no one else was too interested except Chumley. Took some time enjoying the wild flowers and desert scenery. The rest of hike was a track sprint to the finish. At one point tried to pass the baton but missed the hand off  Nice to meet Mark!

The Drive...
HWY 85 to S Woods Rd (East) Hard Left IMMEDIATELY after cattle guard. Drive along fenceline. Follow BLM Margies Cove Trail signs. High clearance vehicle.

The Trail...
Not so wishy washy. Large cairns mark the route. Wash walking doesn’t get started until a ways in. It’s not terribly deep nor difficult. Exposed. Flat.

The Flora...
“Standard” Sonoran stuff. Abundant wildflowers even now in January due to good rains. Mallows, poppies. Phacelia, fiddleneck, etc. Crested saguaro.

The Fauna...
Cool and windy so mostly saw track and scat. Deer, javelina, bobcat. Great jackrabbit area. Saw one black-tailed jackrabbit. Rock lifts found side-blotched lizard, centipedes, scorpion.

The Extra
Head up Brittlebush Trail for a couple miles. Beautiful desert views. Nice geology.

The End of trail...
Saddle Mountain Brewery, Goodyear.

Denny had these trails on his to-do list, so we decided to get them checked off before the weather got too warm. Bruce provided us with the route, which we double checked to make sure he wasn't sending us out into the desert on some wild goose chase, or in the outline of a humorous shape when viewed as a track. We decided it was legit, so off we went

We met off I-10 and Ray Rd at 4:30am, and headed to the trailhead via Maricopa. Taking I-10 through Phoenix would have been almost the exactly the same drive time, but I don't particularly like interstate driving and take highways when given the option. We got to the trailhead a little after 6:00, and were on our way a few minutes later. Margies Cove trail is easy to follow, and the ascent is very gradual, hardly even noticeable. Walking through sand most of the way works the leg muscles though!

We reached the turnoff for Brittlebush around 8:00, and over the next six miles, lost all of the elevation we had gained. Brittlebush is also easy to follow, and looking at some of the different rock features kept us entertained. There must have been a recent microburst around the midway point of Brittlebush, because there's an area where we could easily see about twenty saguaros that had all been blown over towards the west. There were several uprooted palo verde trees, all blown over the same direction as well. Must have been quite a storm at that spot. Shortly before the end of the trail, Bruce's track deviated from the trail, after a moment of checking the gps, we decided that we were on the true trail, and that the track followed an old road--both leading to the trailhead--so we stayed on the trail.

At the trailhead, we had a bite to eat and took a break, then headed back up Brittlebush. The high cloud cover we had enjoyed most of the way had disappeared by this point, so it was a little warm going back uphill. We thought we wouldn't see any more clouds for the rest of the day, but by the time we had reached Margies Cove, some heavier clouds had moved in--which was a most welcome sight.

The walk back down Margies Cove went by quickly with the clouds and cool breeze. We saw a bunch of vultures flying overhead, and one sat on a rock and watched us for a while. Lots of rabbits, lizards, squirrels, etc., but no snakes until we were nearly back to the car. I had been looking up instead of watching the trail, and just as I had looked back down, there was a large snake almost under my feet. I jumped back, but almost immediately realized it was just a gopher snake. We took a few pictures, then got back to the car about 10 minutes later. Enjoyable day on some new trails for me, and we finished up with a late lunch in Maricopa--thanks, Denny, for buying!!!

Linda was nice enough to drive me out to do these two trails on my list. One in the 100 hikes book and one in the 60 hikes book. I expecting a hot 20 mile desert march. Prayers were answered and the temps dropped this weekend! We also had a breeze and cloud cover for 75% of the hike :D . The start of Margies and end of Brittlebush were a little plain but the rest of the hike was more enjoyable then I anticipated. Some cool rock formations and washes. Albeit the washes wore me down pretty good. Linda kept us at a good pace and pointed out the cool stuff like an antler, gopher snake and more Zebra-tailed lizards than we could count. The lizards were quite entertaining. Except for the Cresote, and Palo Verde the flowers were pretty much done. A few wash poppies and that was about it. We made it back to the car right before I talked Linda's ears completely off :D . Great to get a hike in with Linda. We finished off with a late lunch at Raceway Bar and Grill. Lots of cool signs hanging on the walls. Thanks Linda, like HAZ, :yr:

After reviewing the scenic photosets of The Jefe, Eagle and Bifrost I figured I go check out some of the poppies since It appeared to be one nicer concentrations I've seen on the internet this year besides of course the over visited Peridot Mesa.

Upon the last mile of the dirt road to the remote TH I surprisingly ran into two large twin grey Mercedes vans both with trailer in tow driving rather fast for the conditions of the road.
I immediately thought of some odd smuggling activity at first just because of where I was but upon further examination I noticed they belonged to a Colorado Community College.
A group of about 20 guys and girls were all visiting for spring break and spending the weekend backpacking within the SDNM.

I got a head start and went miles ahead of them and didn't see another person until my return back at night since I was off trail most of the day.
I headed straight for the nice little basin in between peak 2358' and 1804' and spent most of my day lazily lingering around enjoying the scenery.
I did hike up 1804' real quick just to scan the area to see the best patches of yellow and I surprisingly got prefect cell service up there and even recorded a rare Instagram video.

I took photos well after sunset as usual and I'm not sure if it was just my mind playing tricks at the time but I could have sworn all the poppies slightly closed up at night and if what @jonnybackpack just told me today is true then I guess it's a factual thing?

Walking back at night underneath the glow of the near full moon in complete silence in one of the most pristine desert areas I've been too was pure bliss.

A Venture into Alston's Playground.
This Plan B turned out to be an A.

Driving Note. The immediate turn to the left after you turn off 85, on to Woods Road, and cross the Cow Catcher, is not obvious. We ended up going straight and making the first left on another forest road. This worked out just fine.

This is a nice area that is currently made much nicer by the abundance of Flora. It's a Poppy Paradise Right now.

We decided that Cove made no sense (no ships were seen), so we've named it Margie's Basin.
Checking at home with Webster (Never liked that show),
Cove =
a level area sheltered by hills or mountains

A couple miles into the hike, the poppies started popping. We lost Karl for extended periods as he wandered in the patches.

The goal on this one became, get to the top of the steepish looking Peak 2358, while seeing who could go in full Tibber mode the longest. Karl's battery died first... He wins.

It was a steep climb to the top of 2358, but man was it worth it. There is probably only a 20 sqft area up there, but it was a perfect perch. The views all around were great. What a vantage point. There are plenty of peaks in this area for people to explore.

Video :next: [ youtube video ]

I think our route down was slightly better than the one up. We retreated to the Truck in time for Joe to enjoy his Grapefruit Surprise!

A great day to new spots gentlemen!
Thanks for driving Karl

This was our second hike of the day and the backup hike after we thought the primary hike would take us after dark. So we headed to Margies Cove still in the Maricopa Mtns and started from the TH about 2pm. The trail is very flat and we were not entirely sure which hike wanted to do but after some deliberation we decided on a distant peak as our goal. The first two miles is nice but there were no poppies or hardly any wildflowers. But very quickly it turned into a poppy garden as we headed towards the peak objective. After taking what was probably way too many pics in the valley we finally began the ascent up the very steep slope. Getting higher every time I stopped to look around the views were awesome and kept getting better. It was a hard fought summit but well worth the effort. Nice break on top and beverage while enjoying the view.

Heading down we took a slightly different route with goal to spend more time in the valley on the way back to the trail. We wandered around the valley floor checking out the poppy show some more and eventually making it back to the trail. Once on the trail it was easy stroll back to the vehicle. Surprised at the scenery in Margies Cove which is really a large basin and of course the level of wild flowers was unexpected. Definitely one to keep on the radar during wild flower season.
