Horseshoe Bend looked very nice without the bright sunlight and harsh shadow that is usually cutting the Bend in half when I'm there.
We also caught a nice view of a several-hundred foot high waterfall from the bridge at the dam.
And against all odds, the Antelope Canyon tour wasn't canceled.
Plus nothing was crowded ... a nice day to be up there!

Spent the day driving up to Page for a planned paddle trip over the weekend. Unfortunately, it seems my luck with the weather finally wore itself out, as we were plagued with high winds. After driving all day, we decided to do a couple little tourist jaunts to stretch our legs before heading back to the AirBnB to sort gear and prepare for a long day on the water.

First stop was the alcove behind the Shell Station. We snagged the last parking spot in the parking area along the fence line. There was a steady stream of people heading up the sandy path to the alcove for the requisite photograph. With the winds howling, spending time in the alcove itself was an experience in being sandblasted. After waiting our turn, we got a photo and headed back to the car and wandered over to the AirBnB to check in and get settled.

With sunset approaching, we decided to brave the hordes at the horseshoe bend overlook. It's been well over 20 years since I've stopped there - in addition to the entrance station, very much enlarged parking area, and toilet facilities, it appears the trail has been re-routed and outfitted with some strategically placed shade structures. As expected, it was packed. After paying our fee and finding a parking spot towards the far end of the lot, we joined the masses on the trail to the overlook area. We peeled off early, and found a spot with a clear view of the horseshoe below and sat ourselves down to watch the sunset.

Managed to get a few nice photos as the sun hit the horizon and sank below. Once we satisfied ourselves that we got the photos we wanted, we beat a hasty retreat, passing many on our way back up to the parking area. I was surprised to see how many folk were still headed in, even after the sun had sunk below the horizon.

It was nice to catch some touristy photos, though it's safe to say my tolerance for being around hordes of people is confirmed to be extremely low, so I'll be refraining from exposing myself to those kinds of crowds again any time soon. 😆

Writing report, better late than never 6-27-2025. Finally, I made it. One word for our trek: WINDY. Wow, but we made it. Very cold too as we went in the AM.

The trail is all paved. They had a nice sign up for Christmas so I got a photo of the cousins before we headed on down. It was hard to even look around as the wind was so fierce. Even when we finally made it to the Lookout, it was hard to get pictures without the fear of being blown away. I even tried a selfie.... need more practice as I seem to have no clue how to do this  .

Hiking back up I stayed with Connie as the uphill is a little tough on her. That's when she told me she hates hiking. This was news to me though, as in Montana, she seemed to really enjoy it but, that's been awhile.

We decided to drive as far as the LeFevre Overlook since the weather was not going to cooperate with prolonged outdoor activity. So I came up with the following:
  • Apache Pass Vista.
Navajo Bridges including walk across and back, look around VC.
AWESOME lunch at Lonely JackRabbit Restaurant.
Lee's Ferry, walk around stone houses.
    House Rock Valley Overlook.
Jacob's Lake stop for cookies (not too many available this time of year :( , but good nonetheless.)
    LeFevre Overlook.
(from 89a view of Shinumo Altar - my research: great article, fascinating geology! who knew?! https://earthly-musings.blogspot.com/20 ... altar.html [ photo ] )
We got home just before it got dark. It was a good full day.

First visit, along with the dam and Lower Antelope. I'll be guiding people on this trip from Sedona once or twice a week - along with Grand Canyon the other day or two ... I'm hoping that most weeks are two GRCA trips and only one Antelope, since the drive/day is so long here, lol.
Nice to finally see it, since I never made it here when I lived at the Canyon.

Day 1 - The long ride up to Lee's Ferry with a stop at Navajo Bridge. The wind was brutal but died down during the night.
Day 2 - Backhaul up the river to Glen Canyon Dam and a full day kayaking down with stops at the petroglyphs and on Horseshoe Bend. With the wind picking up again the next day we were advised not to camp on the river.
Day 3 - Breakfast at the Cliff Dwellers Lodge, Cathedral Wash to the Colorado River and back, the drive around to Horseshoe Bend from above
Day 4 - The long drive home and the dread of going back to work the next day...

We finally made it up here after many years of seeing the amazing photos. There was a $20 entry fee that is not covered with any annual pass. Park in the lot and take the short hike down to the lookout area. There were hundreds of people there but it was more crowded in the front of the fenced area. It's possible to walk around the curve of the horseshoe on the North and South sides. There's no fence so don't get so close to the edge. There were some amazing photo opportunities. We saw some boats traveling along the river which were probably part of a tour. If you're staying anywhere near Page, AZ, this place is definitely worth seeing. I've heard in years past people just parked on the road, but that's not allowed any longer. As a result, the road is usually not so congested around this area.

Hiked up Spencer with JJ. Good 5G at the top from Page even on my cheapie prepaid Verizon, which is signal throttled vs standard plans.

Parted ways with JJ and hiked down to the trailhead. I jumped in the jjiii rocket and respectively weaved through the hogans up to Horseshoe Bend. Driving around in dad's 911 was a riot as a kid but the jjiii has exceptional acceleration vs that 80s toy.

As JJ described, entering Horseshoe Bend is like waiting in one of the three lines at emissions. I don't follow trending sources so I had no clue that 4,000 people visit here on average daily.

Piestewa was the busiest inner-city trail a decade ago but that's half the "explorers" vs the now mighty Horseshoe Bend. The Conga line here is slower, it's a paved walk and not one hello Joe.

JJ's plan was to hike to the flip side peninsula so I could get a photo of him ~0.6 mi across. Echos carried across better than I would have expected but boy howdy was he tiny.

The AEG on Horseshoe is pathetic but cool to experience once.

Hiked Horseshoe Bend Overlook with Victoria and YSP as part of our Glen Canyon trip.

On the way back from Glen Canyon we stopped at Horseshoe bend for pictures. It looks like they have finally finished the trailhead renovations and are now charging $10 per vehicle to park (which is a pretty steep price given how short the hike is). On the plus side, it does seem to have reduced the crowds somewhat compared to the last time I was here (although covid could be contributing to that as well).

We got lots of pictures and enjoyed the view for a while. We did not stay long as it was pretty hot and most people were tired from the trip.

Given the new steep price, I probably wouldn't go back unless I was bringing someone new who had never been there before (which was also the case with most of the YSP people on the trip this time)

Second hike of the day. When in Rome.... Actually I was checking some things out for a potential future hike. I would like to hike up the Spencer Trail and then out to the center of Horseshoe Bend.
