This was a cool, breezy day but really nice for our hike. We explored two dry waterfalls. Very pretty area and Mark spotted a white tailed deer. There were three small plants with flowers. Two were purple and one had orange flowers. Mark gave me some very good information about the rock formations in the area. Unfortunately some of it was over my head. In my defense, I have always loved rocks so the education is welcome. The trail was in good shape and it is pretty steep in areas so a bit of a workout. Always enjoy a hot epsom salts bath after a workout.

A little spare time yesterday so Ginny and I did a short 3.5 mile hike in the Catalina Mountains on the Soldier Canyon Trail. I did this trail 12 years ago and swore I wouldn't do it again, very steep but short trail. This time we did the upper half and it was still steep but spent a little more time exploring rather than just hiking through. Wow, I missed a lot the first time. Two really large waterfalls along the trail, dry but still interesting. We will have to come again when the creek is running. Getting to the top of the falls is easy because the trail passes by them but getting to the bottom where the falls can be seen might be more of a problem, might require a bit of off trail and rock scrambling. The water falls are spectacular but I was equally amazed by the gneiss, really good exposure along the falls. I was really excited but Ginny not so much, I tried explaining it but same reaction. It was like the look of a deer in your headlights. I get the same excitement with schist, What can I say I'm a Igneous metamorphic Petrology buff. Any way we will have to make this trip again maybe during the Monsoons.

I was reviewing some of the posts from past years of mountaineering down this canyon, looks interesting and definitely the way to explore the canyon but I'm afraid that will have to be another lifetime for me. The trail is in good condition at least the upper 1.5 miles.

Hiked to high point, had an energy bar, and went back down. Breezy day made the climb up “extra”, as my son might put it.

About a mile in, I’m pretty sure I heard sheep bleating but couldn’t visually verify.

The second half of the hike up had burned recently; basically everything from the creek to just before Gordon Hirabayashi. Looks like it will recover quickly for the most part, though the barrel cactus didn’t look so good.

Really like this trail, it packs a lot in a short distance.

Revisiting a loop i like that takes in a nice, big area. Changed it up and went up to Shreve Saddle to pay a visit before heading east on the AZT. Nice challenging day. Felt decent, not great

Morning jaunt to see wildflowers and get in a nice climb to boot. Hung out at the high point a few minutes before heading down, had the place to myself.

First half mile was a pretty intense show, which gradually became more sporadic as the climb continued. When you remove the brittlebushes and fairy dusters from the mix, the show becomes less of an in-your-face color explosion.

Still some pretty good water in the canyon, especially in the slot below Gordon Hirabayashi.

Went back to one of my favorite little spots in the Catalina's. Started up the Soldier Trail and then went over to see how much water was going over the first couple sets of waterfalls.

Saw fresh bear scat again this year and numerous tracks from bobcats, bear and I think a mountain lion in the sand near one of the big watering holes. But didn't see anything other than a few birds the entire time. Love getting out early and had the entire place to myself. Didn't any other people until I was almost back to my car and then had to wait for a train of hikers from Canyon Ranch.

Hiked to the high point and enjoyed the view and some solitude, though I did share my sitting rock with a large fuzzy caterpillar.

Forgot how steep the first mile is. Downhill wasn’t as fun as it could have been as my trail runners are now a half size too short. Ow. Getting old is for the birds.

Doing more prep for a GC trip, last week was striding along a trail similar to the main corridor and this week something rocky and steep to get ready for some other trails in my sights. First mile always gets your attention, it is straight up. Took Soldier Trail over to the AZT to stretch my legs on something easy for 30 minutes, then turned around with a detour over to some slot canyons to take a few waterfall pictures. What is normally a Class 3 scramble when it is dry is now a Class 4 scramble when the water is flowing and the rock face is slightly wet. Snapped a few pictures and headed back down to my car.

Need to make myself a note, from here on out I will need to wear hiking pants in southern Arizona to this year. Didn't get too scratched up, but whatever pollen is on the weeds and grass gave me a bad rash all over my legs. The trails around here are very overgrown with waist high grass and weeds along most of the trail. Bumped into one other person this morning and we chatted for a minute. They were a retired FS employee and we both concurred that while the grass and wildflowers look nice, next year this will be potential tinder for wildfires.

Surprisingly no snakes were seen, but did see the most impressive pile of bear scat I've seen since moving down here. Pretty far down the mountain as well, at best a half mile from Catalina Hwy.

Late morning hike with Rudy. No wildflowers, this Spring is a bust.

For some reason in the HAZ Hike Guide for this trail it incorrectly indicates the trail lies within the Bighorn Sheep Management area. It is in fact in The Pusch Wilderness Area, and not the restricted Sheep management area. Making it open to dogs, and off-trail hiking January-April.

it was chilly and cloudy at the beginning. i kinda struggled all day after two difficult nights at work. tried to just keep it moving, even if ugly.

tough day but a fun route

Did this as a quick sunset out and back. Didn't get all the way to the camp. Tough start compared to Babad Doag, but really nice in the evening.

My first hike in the Catalinas in quite a while. I have to say, (preaching to the choir I'm sure), I've never seen it so dry. It really is kind of worrisome. The prickly pears and saguaros look very shrunken and stressed.

My friend and I used two cars, and walked downhill from Prison Camp to the highway. I don't recall ever having hiked this trail before.

I'll be living in Tucson for two or three months beginning in mid December. There are lots of hikes I'd like to do while I'm here.

We may need a power hike category, faster than a hike but I certainly didn't run everything. Trying to expand my horizons and decided I'm going to make an effort to drive all the way across town a few times a month to see what trails on the east side of town look like. Perfect weather for a big climb, in the low 60's when I parked at the trailhead. The first mile will definitely get your attention, if it were any steeper it would be a scramble. Probably the steepest trail I've done in a while that didn't require me to use my hands on the uphill.

Will need to keep this area in mind for future visits, some of my favorite type of hiking/running. Steep trails that lead into beautiful canyons. Did the whole trail and then went immediately left into a drainage, then rock hopped down into a canyon to explore for a tiny bit. Felt pretty decent and was able to get from my car to the AZT in 50 minutes. Then came back up and proceeded to run on the nice wide AZT over to the Sycamore Canyon trailhead and then turn around to go back the way I came. .

Didn't have any plans for the day after Christmas, so I decided to attack the next segment of the AZT. Tried to park at Hirabayashi, but the guy at the checkpoint wouldn't let me go without chains/4wd (of course they opened the road just a half hour later). Pretty lame, would be cool if they were allowed to use common sense, but I didn't mind adding Soldier Trail (wish they would at least let me park a mile farther up though).

Didn't get started until after 12:30pm at Redington Road, so I figured I didn't have too much time to dawdle, or else I'd be coming down Soldier in the dark. Made pretty good time across the flat stuff (the constant gunfire in the distance helped). All the big and little drainages were flowing, and the Agua Caliente Wash crossing even required me to go up about 50 feet to find a spot that was jumpable...

Made it to Catalina Highway (10.7 miles) in just about 2 hours and 20 minutes. The signage at Molino was pretty terrible; there was a sign directing you to AZ trail, but the next junction was unmarked, and the trail to the campground looked more well-traveled. So I went that way, and ended up walking through the campground, unsure if it was correct. There was even an AZ trail sign on the road. But at the other end, I found the trail meanders around the south side of the campground...oh well.

Got to Hirabayashi very tempted to hitchhike back down, but then decided I have time, so I might as well see Soldier Trail... Which was fun, except the mile and a half along the road to get back to the car.
