A nice hike through ponderosa pines. The climb up the hill was steady and not steep with several loooong switchbacks. A view of Humphreys Peak through the trees at the top.

A Forest closure I hadn’t heard about had me throwing a Tortoise Tantrum. Luckily Joe loves to hike early. We realized it didn’t go into effect until 8am and it was only 545. Yeah! Just enough time to do the first hike. Nice little loop I’m sure the locals like. From there it was on to Dogtown to do the other three. Ponderosa is a nice little nature walk for kids. Davenport was a nice 5 miler. Probably 70% shade or so. Lots of Pine, oak, and grasshoppers. We saw 3 Elk and two groups of 4hikers the whole hike. Nice hike. Last we hiked around Dogtown Lake. Lots of people out fishing and such. To windy! Lots of fond memories of this lake fishing and camping. Nice mixture of trails today and top notch company. Like Haz, Joe rocks!!

Quickly enter Pines. Mountain bike friendly tread in dense inspiring pines for a good half-mile. Reminded me more of Big Bear than anything Arizona. Then realized the between the pines fill was oak trees. It might be pretty in Autumn.

Plastic chevrons in the trees but the trail is easy to follow. Pine cover thinned further in, still nice.

Clover Springs
The pines were back in full force with lots of oak between. The Bill Williams leg was nicer than I recall. A half-furlong stretch is kinna steep.

We got this hike done by 7:45 a.m. Denny panicked the entire hike we'd miss the 8 a.m. Bill Williams Mountain Watershed closure. Apparently an annual dillybob unless the area is deemed moist.

Ponderosa Trail
A bunch of Ponderosa Pines, thick needle footing. Semi-questionable route finding. Short lil' lasso loop for the curious.

Davenport
After a little bit of a climb you level out and it's Pines everywhere with small tickets of Oak.

The lower trail to roughly a quarter-mile before the road is very mountain bike friendly. Minor ankle buster rocks in the 1.25-1.6 mile vicinity. There is a gate just above the road.

Most of the grade on Davenport appears to be after you cross the road. Which is worthy because the views start to open up.

The clickety-clack of grasshoppers among the pines was intense for a half-mile.

Descending we checked out a little knoll. Soon after we encountered the first of two small groups of hikers.

Deer ears, phlox, Antelope horns, Penstemon. I find pocket lint more exciting than cactus blooms. Denny pointed out a Claret Cup blooming. Interesting because they mass bloomed in the desert in May and now they're hitting at 7,000-feet.

Dogtown Lake
Very windy. Most shore fishing I've ever seen but I don't frequent fishing hotspots. We started over the dam. The footing required some attention along the shore.

Synopsis
Hiked in tevas. Typically easy grades, more ankle buster rocks than most would enjoy in sandals. Collected data to square up five guide pages, chewed the fat, ground the gristle, and almost held with turbo turtle.

The 5th Annual Williams Historic Route 66 Car, Truck & Motorcycle Show was just gearing up before our first hike. It was in full swing heading home.

This one surprised me for how much I enjoyed it. The first 1.5 miles is mostly flat and a little boring, thought it's in pristine ponderosa forest. Once it crosses the closed forest road you get to the real action.

It's a beautifully constructed trail and passes through some really nice forest. It starts with ponderosa and gambel oak, but hits some really nice shaded sections of just oak, and higher up there are some nice firs. The summit is wooded so views are limited, but there are still some holes to get a glimpse of surrounding mountains and prairies.

While the trail is fantastic, if you wanted to do this as part of an off-trail explore up here, descending off nearly any side of this mountain looks like it would be relatively easy.

Note to trailrunners: This would be a solid route and combine it with the loop around the lake for a few extra miles.

Nice trail to the top of the hill. Views from the top of the hill are poor due to too many trees.

I drove to the east side of the hill on Garland Prairie Road to just past the private property sign and bushwhacked to the top. Good workout.

Despite the crowds in the woods, due to Memorial Day weekend, there was no one on the trail. Not a surprise. Saw a small herd of mule deer. Not many flowers, but those cute pink ones need an ID. I did get photos of the deer, you'll see, but not very good ones.

Dogtown Lake has more water in it than last year, I think.

Nice day on the trail, hoping my feet would be okay. They pretty much were.

When you get to the top you can lounge around...on the Davenport.

SOTA activation decided to hike the summit from the east side. I used the atv trail up what appears to be a fire brake from some time ago. Neat spot made lots of contacts

This is a very pleasant and moderate hike. The views are not great due to trees, but you can see the Peaks, and Dogtown Lake, Bill Williams Mountain, etc.

It starts at the Dogtown Lake campground, which would probably be a pleasant place to camp. The lake is not large, but I might bring my kayak over sometime, since it's close by where I'm living.

If you look at my profile page you'll notice I have been doing a lot of 2 and 3 mile hikes, due to a foot problem. This was the first "longer" hike I've done since February in California, I think. My feet were hurting the last mile, but after I loosened my boots a lot they felt better.

This is a very nice trail. The forest is healthy, although dry. Typically Ponderosa pine and Gambel oak are found in the area.

I was on call for my job, and got a later start than I had intended, so I did only part of the trail. Also I took the time to talk to the very nice campground hosts, and petted their nice dog as well, a big old Golden Retriever with a docked tail they had rescued from the pound.

At least I got in 3 miles, which is my current minimum goal. (Still working on getting my feet toughened up, etc.)

I am not sure about 26-50% but it does look low. It does not look nearly as bad as Kaibab Lake!

As you enter Dogtown Lake, don't go left to the day use area - go right to the camping area. As you enter the camping area, you stay left into the parking lot. A very nice TH. A little confusing the the markings for the Nature Trail, but that is what you want to start out on. A pleasant trail. A nice camping area near the summit. A huge cairn at the summit and some decent views. I was camping and fishing with my daughter at White Horse Lake and added this hike while she slept in.

The trail provides excellent views of Bill Williams Mountain and the area surrounding Dogtown Lake. The ascent is relatively smooth, consisting of 3-4 long switchbacks. About 2 miles along the trail there is a split in the trail, if you take the path that continues to climb (it also heads to the west) you will reach the summit. At the summit there is a marker with the altitude (7805.
