I had two goals on this hike. First, I wanted to check out the damage from the 2024 West fire, and second, I wanted to finish trimming the East Rim Trail that I'd started last year.

A dozen cars were parked at the Pine trailhead at 7 a.m., but I only saw one person all day. It was a glorious 64 degrees to start. I headed down the Highline and made the turn up Donahue. It's a tad steep, but luckily, it was in the shade most of the way.

A bit of a road walk on FR218, which has had gravel laid down since the last time I was up here. It looks to be by the same people who did the Rim Road. I wonder if they plan on thinning up here too?

I took FR9382L to the rim and then began my off-trail route to the top of the East Rim Trail, navigating around the nubile locust growth.

The East Rim Trail drops 1,100 feet in three-quarters of a mile to the Pine Canyon Trail. It took me 1.75 hours to get down, completing my trimming as I went. It should be clear sailing from top to bottom now.

On the Pine Canyon Trail, it was a bit of a grind with the temps now in the low 90s.

I'm glad the fire damage was not as bad as I'd feared and that my trimming was complete on the East Rim Trail.

Perfect weather for hiking. '70s to start and overcast and breezy to finish. Saw only one person the entire hike and he was fishing. Saw one whitetail, lots of squirrels. Good to get out.

Last hike of the year. The crews were not working today, so I checked out some of the thinning they were doing. Found an undocumented spring they unearthed, part way up the hill away from Pine Creek

It looks like they have begun "fire-wising" Pine Canyon. It appears they have been at it for at least a couple of weeks. It's going to look entirely different when they finish the thinning.

Sad to see it happen, but it needed it.

Linda was looking for something away from the furnace and that would fit into her busy schedule.

I had done variations of this loop a few times before and thought it would fit the bill. A beautiful 58 degrees to start, with clear blue skies, birds chirping, and the sound of wood a chippin' in the distance. We would later hike past the crew that was cleaning up slash pines from the recent thinning in the area.

At Jones Crossing, we made the turn south, heading upstream. We tried to keep our feet dry at first but eventually gave up and walked in the water. It was easy walking for the most part, and the loop clicked off pretty quickly. We stopped at the cave, and shortly after, we startled a rafter of turkeys.

We climbed up and out of East Clear Creek via a side canyon with a human-made trail. We finished in plenty of time to get Linda home comfortably at 78 degrees.

I'm not sure what happened after that, but Linda pulled over to the side of the road on the way home and forced me out of the truck. I was left alone and scared. Luckily, I was at the upper trailhead for the Pine Canyon Trail and just walked home with my tail between my legs.

I guess I had a good time.

This was going to be just my typical workout hike.

After I crossed the bridge, I decided to Zig instead of Zag. I remembered I had a pair of small trimmers in my bag and remembered how overgrown the top of the East Rim Trail was the last time I was up there. So I headed up. Might as well trim while I'm going up. There was a lot more going up than I remembered and my hands were blistered. So 2/3rds of the way up (6720')I quit.

The rest will have to wait another day. The next, time with gloves.

I hiked down to the Pine TH, where I’d be picked up and then join Deb for breakfast in town.

Smoke in Pine Canyon almost made me turn around. Luckily, it lifted after a while. Hopefully, it was just from an illegal campfire up on Milk Ranch.

I saw a few hikers on the Bearfoot trail and then not a soul until I passed the Good Enough intersection on the Pine Canyon Trail. At this intersection, there was evidence of recent "fuel reduction" in the area. They took out a load of trees.

The temperature was great throughout, with the tree cover and shade from the rim. I destroyed a 3-egg, 3-item omelette, hash browns, and a pancake. Yummers.

69, what a way to start the day!

It got warmer as the hike went on, but it was never uncomfortable. Mostly in the shade and a bit of a breeze. Finished the hike in the low '80s.

My typical workout hike when up here. I did a short loop up top also

Overcast + breezy + temps in the 70's = perfect

Saw some elk, some deer and an Arizona Black rattlesnake that never rattled and that I thought was a branch at first.

A perfect 65 degrees, partly cloudy and breezy to begin. It looks like they have completed building all the roads in the area for the fuel reduction project. The Pine Canyon Trail is in decent shape all the way to the rim with little new dead fall.

I got soaked the last 2 miles of the hike as the rain came down, the winds picked up, and the temps dropped 20 degrees.

Hike to the top of the rim and back.

They are in the process of building roads throughout Pine Canyon in preparation for a major thinning project. I talked to one of the equipment operators and they've been contracted through the end of January to get the roads built. After that they will begin the thinning, including the use of helicopters.

I would imagine this will adversely affect hiking on this trail for the 2024 season.

Thunder and rain had me starting later than planned. Fall is starting to turn the summer foliage into their fall yellows and reds. The squirrels were busy gathering. I saw one doe that skittered off, tail in air.

Climbing the switchbacks I got pelted with hail and rain that lasted 20 minutes or so.

Temps were pleasant in the 50's for most of the hike.

Got in a bit of a workout before heading back to the furnace. Cloud cover, tree cover and temps in the 70's kept things perfect. Surprised to pass 6 hikers and a pair of MTB'ers on a Monday.

A pair of whitetail bucks in velvet were too busy eating to worry about me.

On the return, a rather well fed Arizona Blacktail Rattler made sure I was paying attention by scaring the bejesus out of me. I warned a couple I saw 200' later. The wife promptly said, "oh no" and turned around. The husband said, "she's done".

The Turtle Joined me for a morning hike in the cooler rim country. 60's to start, 75 to finish. Jazzy sunshine and tree cover kept things perfect. Every thing is real green and the blackberries are ripening.

Good hiking and catching up with the turtle again.
