Was going down to Sedona today to camp with my family and since they weren't going to arrive till 6pm, I decided to go hiking. Goal of today was to find two geocaches, one located at the East end of the Thomas Point Trail and the other at the East end of the Harding Spring Trail. Parked at the Call of the Canyon parking area and was lucky as I got one of the last few spots. What was not fun was learning that my America the Beautiful pass was not accepted here and had to pay $15 for parking. Well, it was labor day weekend, so the area was much more crowded than usual, at least I know for future hikes that I shouldn't park there.

Walked North along the 89a till I found the trailhead. Had to search for it, as it isn't that well marked where the starting point is. Once I found it I started heading up. Lower section of the trail was nice as it was shaded with the ponderosa pines, upper section was not was exposed to the sun. I forgot to apply sunscreen before I started the hike. Oops. Continued up around the white rock mountains and was greeted to some scenic views of the area and 89a. Had to check the route once as there was some confusion on where the trail was supposed to lead, but otherwise no pathfinding issues. After some hiking and a few short breaks I made it to the top of the rim. Found a strange rock wall at the top, not sure what the purpose of it was, did not add or remove any rocks from it. Then I found the geocache, which was two years lonely (that means the last finder was over two years ago).

Started hiking towards the Harding Springs trail. Followed a few forest roads, but mostly bushwhacked. I was hoping to pick up the Cookstove Trail that ran along one of the forest roads, but failed to find it. The road that ran parallel to Cookstove can't really be called a road anymore. So many trees and debris were in the way. So instead I mostly stuck near the rim's edge. I did come across a trail that was maintained, (not cookstove though) and followed it all the way to the Harding Springs Trail. Saw a big elk along this trail, but wasn't able to take a photo before it ran off.

Found the geocache at the top of the Harding Springs trail and headed down. Going down was much easier than going up. A few log fences were along this trail, though half of them had fallen over. Made it down back to the 89a and walked back to my truck. The 89a walk was my least favorite part of the hike due to the loud vehicles and just how many there were. (Remember, this was labor day weekend) Though it was interesting to see what I can only assume to be part of an older alignment, below the current asphalt of the 89a. The old asphalt was red colored, just some sections of Old Route 66. I've heard that before the 89a was constructed, this stretch of road between Sedona and Flagstaff was called State Route 79. Though the current State Route 79 now belongs to a stretch of road Between Florence Junction and Oracle Junction.

Was an enjoyable hike. Though I was ready to get down into Sedona and get some lunch as I hadn't had much for breakfast that morning.

First time on this trail...our church men's group started from our retreat area on Banjo Bill drive (near pine flats). We did part of the telephone trail, crossed 89a and up Harding. Pretty steep. I was feeling my age, wasn't a proud moment - this one pretty much kicked my rear, but I made it to the top.

Was considering the plateau hike north and then down cookstove, but only had 1/2 liter of water left and was already spent. Made the right decision to just go back to camp via the numerous trails along the creek.

Was hot, sunny day...but was good to be with my church bros.

Hiked the 5 road-to-rim trails on the east side of upper Oak Creek Canyon. Up and back down on Purtymun, Thomas Point and Telephone, then up Harding / north on the connector trail / down Cookstove. All are steep, well-constructed trails with scenery and big views. I expected more of a thrash on Purtymun but its in mostly good condition all the way to the rim, so it's clearly getting some use and unofficial maintenance.

Hit Cathedral Rock and Bell Rock on the way out of town, fun slickrock.

Teva Joe has written about this loop, a couple of people (including HPP) have traveled it, and I can't believe it doesn't have a lot more photos and triplogs. This is a beautiful loop hike in Oak Creek Canyon. I recommend going up the Harding Springs trail and DOWN the Cookstove trail. Cookstove is steep an sections, and you get to fill up your water at the spring at Pine Flats campground, yum (no filter needed)! If you start early enough, you can park on the east side of the road right next to the Harding Springs trailhead.

We started at around 8:30 and the temps were perfect (a bit humid after the recent rains), and there's plenty of shade on the trail up. On the rim the temps are cooler, and the trail is a pleasant stroll. Don't miss the cairns marking the top of Cookstove (they're hard to miss), and head on down. Once you get to the road it's only about a mile back to the Cave Springs campground.

We hiked up Harding Springs and across the rim and back down Cookstove and glad we took that route as Cookstove seemed much steeper and rockier. What can you say, the striations in Sedona rock are just incredible!

Number two on my canyon trails jaunt. I like this trail as well, but it offered the least number of views. One big plus is that the trail is the most forested of all the canyon trails, though some might say over grown. There are a number of dead old trees that had been out competed by the younger ones, but there are also quite a few live old trees. The most noticeable thing about this trail was the great smell of ponderosa pine along the length of it. Once on top there are some nice views of the spires of Coconino Sandstone the sit on the west side of the canyon and just north of West Fork. I poked around the pile burns and the small duff fire they had a month ago at the base. It looks pretty good, and some of the old trees have numerous fire scars at their bases, so the most recent one will just add to them.

Went up Harding Springs this time and actually did the Harding/Rim/Cookstove loop. It turns out that when I tried this loop, I was at least a half mile from the top of Harding. Go Figure...now I know. I actually lost the rim trail for a while and got to do some bushwhacking! Good stuff. I'm starting to get extremely excited about summertime...these Oak Creek rim climbs are sweet! (and I'll have the mountain at my disposal as well :) )

I enjoyed this hike. I had to be up and down in about an hour, so I didn't get to spend much time at the top, but the view from the top was good! I would do it again. I don't consider myself "in shape", so going up took me about 40 minutes (probably would've been less if I hadn't taken pictures...:)). The trip down took under 15 minutes-but that was because I ran. I would allow for maybe 20-30 minutes for the return trip another time. :) This trail was a good workout, but not impossible. It doesn't appear to be frequented by groups, either-the trail itself is narrow and I only met two other hikers the whole time.

Did this as part of a Harding Spring/Cookstove loop. Going up this trail wasn't too bad. Parking could be an issue during peak times, but this is a lesser used trail. Great views from up above though. This part of Sedona reminds me of a mini-Arizonan version of Zion canyon.

We walked this trail Christmas Eve, 2001. It appears to have been maintained within the last year or two. The Red Rock Pass machine is gone and so are the 'no parking' signs. There was 6-8 inches of old snow on the trail but it was no problem. We did it on the way back from a trip to Flagstaff and got up and back (with lunch) in less than 2 hours. It was a nice break from the hectic Holiday Season. We've heard rumors that vandals destroyed the ATM machine there and it won't be put back. If so, that means parking for this trail would be one of the best in Oak Creek Canyon. Be sure to continue 100-200 yards to your right when the trail tops out for the best views and a nice place to relax.
