Wally and I did a variation of this hike. It was overcast for the entirety of it! 👍 The trails were in the usual shape with a quail or rabbit here and there. We saw just a tiny bit of water in one of the little canyons and it was 🤢 and being hogged up by bees. Hackberry was worse, bee wise. I didn’t get a close look at the water hole but the area around the pipe had a layer of bees across the ground. Don’t think you could filter without getting stung! 😬🫣 It was nice to get out in the Supes and get a hike in with Wally! Humidity is definitely on the rise!!
Thanks for the hike Wally! Like HAZ, you rock!!

A Hackberry hike with Denny. The cloud cover provided protection from the sun. The humidity was up but still a nice morning. We saw only a few other hikers and some quail and rabbits. Took a side canyon on the way. Very little water and lots of bees.

Well, this loop was kind of the plan. The weather was just too nice. 😁 Wally took me exploring instead. 🫣😂 We checked out an arch, a mine here, a mine there, a glyph, and lots of pot sherds! We saw one Whitetail deer and a couple Redtail Hawks soared over the top of us on a mountain top.
It was quite an enjoyable outing!! :y:
Thanks Wally!! Like HAZ, you rock!

We started out on the Hackberry Spring loop but ended up on Hackberry Mesa. I think had something to do with the cool weather and the alignment of the planets. The climb up to the javelina got steep and loose so we decided not to hike down and ended up hiking across Hackberry Mesa and down to the valley of the sherds.

I good day exploring and checking out some points of interest that Denny had not seen.

Quick morning hike in the supes! 😁☀️☀️☀️☀️☀️ Saw 2 rattlesnakes and a covey of quail in the last half mile. 😁😁🥰🥰🐍🐍💚💚 Few people out on the trail, but the heat is really culling the amount. There were maybe 5ish cars each at the horse lot and first Water TH. There were way more people at crosscut TH.

There are a lot of bees at the main big campsite by the wash in the hackberry spring area, and also just past the area where the trail crosses the wash before heading uphill. We saw one lone camper and their pup.

First full family hike we've done in as long as I can remember. Both kids are in college now and one is no longer a teenager :o . The early wakeup is met with the same teenage exuberance, but once we're out a mile or so on the trail, the moods start to improve.

Took the Second Water Trail to the first horse trail junction and headed down towards Hackberry Spring and then up the hill. Just before our ascent we saw a small herd of deer, at least 3, maybe 4 or more. Almost missed the junction for the trail to the Clapp Mine as it's pretty faint and right next to where the Hackberry Spring Trail makes a hard right turn.

Got to the mine and this time I packed my headlamp so I went inside a bit. It's really much warmer in there than outside in the shade, which was probably lower 50s. This seemed in contrast with the Lava River Tube in Flag where it's much cooler inside. I didn't go too far in because I've seen other posts where there are bats further back. also saw some mice scat piles and a snakeskin, so I was was good to explore as much as I did. Natasha followed me in but Radmila and Dmitri wanted nothing to do with it. [-(

On the way back we made a loop of it heading up to Garden Valley and checked out the Indian ruin. Still lots of sherds left out for people to easily find, one was really big. It's interesting how busy this trail is but the majority of people who walk by this have no idea.

Made it back to the lot and stopped for lunch on the way home, followed by an afternoon powernap by everyone. Saw quite a bit for a short hike, turned out very nice. Cruising into Xmas time.

A stroll in the western Superstitions to see a prospect and view some ruins. We started early and even found water in First Water creek. The guys took me to the Javelina mine (slang name) which is on the side of the hill but not visible from 20 feet from any direction. I didn't have my headlamp so I delayed exploring for another day. We hiked across Hackberry Mesa and down into Cholla Tank and looped back. It warmed up in the afternoon but still a nice day on the trail.

Quick hike to hackberry springs. Garden Mesa is sad. Hackberry springs area is slightly better, with some unburned areas.

First Water lot had lots of people, but didn't see too many people on the trail until later. As we drove out, there were lots of people in every parking area on first Water road. Glad we went earlier! Gorgeous weather!

This was quick re-intro to the superstitions, affording me the opportunity to test my ankle after spraining it a few weeks prior while also getting a look at how things fared after the siphon fire. The route is entirely within the siphon fire perimeter, and while there were large areas that were burned to the ground, there were others that were barely touched...

Aside from the scorched vegetation, the trail itself is in decent shape - it was weird to be able to look clear across the landscape with unobstructed views...though it certainly made it easier to find ruins and other historical artifacts. Another hiker in the area pointed out a broken arrowhead, found not far off the trail proper. They mentioned the presence of some ruins in the area, but we didn't detour to check things out.

It was sad to see all the burned areas, knowing what things looked like before. Hopefully things didn't burn too hot to significantly delay regrowth...though we also really really need rain.

Given how full the parking lot was when we were done, we were glad to have gotten there early and to see as few people as we did while out walking.

Went back to this area with Dmitri again to do some more exploring. We started from the 1st Water lot this time and took 2nd Water Trail to the first turnoff past 1st Water Creek and headed north. I spotted a trail from aerial photos and made a route that we followed as a shortcut across the Hackberry Loop to where there is a junction for a mine on the NE side of Hackberry Mesa.

I downloaded the track that shows the way to the mine from a posted route. At first I thought we found it but we were on the Hackberry Spring Trail. We backtracked and I found a very faint trail that turned into a much easier one to follow once we got across a small ravine. Once we got to the mine it was very cool to see. There is a huge pile of tailings outside it and while the entrance has some tailings partially filling it, you can easily go over that and get inside if you want. I decided not to, although I was very tempted. Looking inside I could see what what looks like the main horizontal tunnel, and then another one that's perpendicular to it just inside the entrance. I spent so much time looking at this that I forgot to get pics of the entrance and the tailings pile.

After that we got back on the Hackberry Spring trail and headed up towards Garden Valley. Just before we got on 2nd water trail, we took the trail over to the arch to check that out. On the way out there I spotted what I thought was a cave but was just a small hole. Then when we headed towards the arch, I got sidetracked and followed the trail downhill on the other side instead of going up. Not sure where that trail goes to, maybe worth another exploration one day. Once we found the trail to the arch, it was starting to get a little hot and I was a little concerned about having enough water. I don't know how strenuous that might be getting there, and it was at least another 2 miles back to the lot. I decided to bail and keep it an easy Sunday morning hike and less of an Indiana Jones deathmarch.

Stopped at the Indian ruin on the way back and showed Dmitri the pottery sherds and grinding hole there. Finished before 10:30am. The only hiker we saw was at the very start in the lot. He was finishing up at 6:40am and warned us of a bees nest he found while off trail hiking up to a peak near the TH. He said he got stung several times and wiped out running down the hill to get away from them. That may have had something to do with why he was finishing so early.

Met Denny & Wally at First Water at 0500. Driving thru AJ at 0430 is an interesting experience, btw. Headed out on Dutchman and Second Water to Garden Valley. Shade the whole way. Garden Valley is a golden sea of foxtails, one spark and that place is going up in flames.

Made our way to Hackberry. The spring is yuck, but plenty of water in the creek after that point. Easy to keep the feet dry, but enough water for nice pics. Didn’t get much sunlight until the last mile or so. Nice early morning workout loop. Saw one other hiker who started at the same time as us. A pleasant surprise of rain showers on part of my drive back home, and at my house, including some thunder. Always good to see Denny & Wally again, thanks for the invitation!

Wally, Linda and I got out for a leg stretcher in the Supes! We got an early start and were in the shade for the first 4 miles. Finished before it got to warm. Pretty dry out there in the valley. The spring looked a little yucky. There was more water in the creek then I thought there would be. That water looked a lot better then the spring water! We saw some tadpoles in the creek water and Linda spotted one frog with a tail. It was nice to get a little hiking in the Supes! Thanks for the early hike Wally and Linda! Like HAZ, you rock!

My object was to try to get 12 miles in today. So I left the 1st water trailhead at 6:50, out the Dutchman's and up Black Mesa. When I got around to Second Water I knew I was needing a few more miles so I took the Garden Valley trail. I don't know what the saddle's name is where the trail splits. There is a northern leg that loops around the north side of the hill 2430 on a topo and a southern leg. I took the southern leg down to the unknown named creek that joins into 1st water creek. Then up past Hackberry Spring to the northern leg of the Hackberry tail and back around to Second Water trail and to the 1st water trailhead. Well I beat my 12 mile goal.

Not a lot of people on the trail but I met 4 really nice people. A woman out for a few day backpack, we walked and talked until out paths separated. A couple in Garden Valley from Mesa. And joined a guy hiking from 1st Water Creek to just about Second Water trail. These made the day even more enjoyable.

South Mountain is into wildflowers more than the Supes are. But there were still some really nice blooms. A few patches of Desert Chicory, some beautiful Lupin, the Desert Paintbrush really stood out, and some huge fields of what I believe is Purple Mat.

Great weather, great people mixed with time to be alone and a couple cottontails. Oh yes, and one red-wing blackbird. A great way to spend most of a day!

8 million cars in the area given our late start. We originally planned on doing canyon of the water falls from praying hands plus treasure loop or massacre falls. Since all those Trailheads were full, we headed out to first Water Trailhead. We lucked out and took a spot of someone leaving the entirely full lot (there was room at the horae lot when we passed by). We decided to do the hackberry Springs loop as my out of town friend wanted no elevation gain.

There were quite a few people on the trail, as expected, but not too bad. There was water everywhere... Glorousness!! 😁😁😁😁❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ Yay, water! So much water! Flowing, in large deep pools... Happy desert! 😁😁❤️❤️ The water was expected given all the rain, but still it's so nice to see.

Lots of backpackers going out, and lots of tents around garden Mesa.

We had a quick snack in the hackberry springs, then headed through the canyon back to the first Water ranch area/junction with Dutchman tail.

A fantastic hike with amazing weather! :)

Beautiful rainy weather this morning resulted in great shifting clouds during the hike! ❤️ A bit muddy on garden Mesa resulting in shoes weighing more than they should due to attached mud! Extra workout! 🤣

Lots of boyscouts out today. In general a lot of people around, but who can blame them? Such a beautiful area!

I've wanted to try this hike for a while now and so on our drive last week; we put it on our agenda.  I downloaded the route that I thot was the right route... which it is, after the initial hiccup.  We ended up hiking straight off the sidewalk south on a wide trail but not before seeing a group of horse riders crossing over to the other side of the sidewalk.  I saw two other hikers head in the same direction we went.  I heard and then spotted an old air force plane and got some photos despite the bad light.  We got to the topside of a hill and Ambika checked RS where we found we were not on the route so we turned back just near the sidewalk where we headed east.  However, we should have gone a little further back on the sidewalk to catch the trail.

So we cross-countried up and over a hill (as apparently others have done) to finally arrive at a wash to be back on the route again. This would be our first of 3 detours that you can definitely see on our route  .  We didn't let any of our detours go to waste as it was real pretty out there so we took our share of pictures.  After fighting my way past some catclaw we saw the trail we should have been on.  We hiked up the wash (south) for this part of the hike for a while.  The views were plentiful as were the various kinds of wildflowers; especially Desert Chicory.  Of course, Lupine and Desert Hyacinth were also plentiful and some Fairy Duster too.  The other star today was Mother Nature as she was painting the sky beautifully.  We were constantly in awe of her artwork.

Anytime you got above the wash you had great views toward the Little Four Peaks so we were constantly getting pictures of that from several different angles.  As we got more on to the single track and out of the wash, our views to the western Superstitions (Flatiron) opened up nicely.  Weavers Needle was right in front of us too.  As we got closer to the Hackberry Springs Trail system we would start encountering more hikers.  At the initial junction, we made a wrong turn as we wanted to go east down into the First Water Trail so we had to backtrack a bit.  We will do that one more time today.  We climbed a small hill where we got to another junction near the Wilderness boundary.  The hill down was a bit steep and slippery.  Probably would be best to do this part of the loop counterclockwise.

After getting to the bottom of the Creek we meandered on the north side as we headed south.  Obviously, lots of water, running water :) .  We enjoyed every moment as we made our way to the next intersection.  We stopped a few times to take it all in as the water made its way toward us with the golden grasses blowing lightly all around.  We rounded the corner and after walking a little further we decided to take a break in the shade of a rock on the other side of the water, so we hopped over there.  While sitting there we noticed that the clouds seemed to be moving rather fast so we shot some hyperlapse video. I should have shot a little longer though.

We stayed on this side of the creek heading west and as we turned south Ambika checked RS and realized we needed to go north at the drainage we were walking by so once again, we had to backtrack a little.  But per usual, we got a nice view we wouldn't have noticed before.  So up the drainage we went.  There was pretty much no water but there were some big step ups.  The trail is a little tricky to follow here as it's easy to keep going in the wrong direction.  The uphill wasn't too bad; especially when you have wildflowers all around as well as some majestic saguaros.

Once back on the nice trail tread we made some decent time... well for us that is.  We were still busy taking pictures and noticing other things along the way.  The sun was mostly out continuously now but the breeze kept it comfortable.  We did go through an area where we got buzzed... by bees.  We just kept moving.  On the way back we saw a nice little group of Owl Clover and it also seemed there were many more Fairy Dusters.  There was also a big section of those belly Woolly Daisies very low to the ground.

We followed the correct route all the way back; the last part being much easier than our earlier bushwhacking we did.  The hike took longer than we anticipated, but we had no idea that we were going to get such a flower show and the distraction of the water and golden grass topped off with a painted sky :D .  We really enjoyed the hike and hope to do it again next spring.  Do not follow our initial route in the last part of our first half mile.  The official HAZ route is correct now. I'm surprised those that have gone before us and did the same bushwhack at the beginning didn't let Joe know so he could correct it, but Tibber did.

Oh, and once in awhile, don't forget to look back at the trail you've traveled.
