I dub this the advanced-level Hieroglyphics Trail :-). Similar payoff, without the annoying crowds.

I started from the Broadway TH, arriving around 7:30 am, with plenty of parking spaces left.

The first couple of miles along the Lost Goldmine trail offer great profile views of Flatiron, Peak 5024, and the Superstition Ridgeline.

Once reaching the turn up toward Hog Canyon, I passed through the gate and started the off-trail adventure.

At first, I started along the edges of the wash, which fans out on the lower portions of the trail. But soon found that the wash bottom offered the clearest path, and that the banks were actually more choked with pokey/scratchy bushes and roadblocks. So, my advice--stay in the wash the entire hike. Any time I gave into temptation to get out, in search of a shortcut, I regretted it :-)

The primary growth in the wash itself is buffle grass, which, while annoying because it occasionally obscures footing decisions, is at least not scratchy! And as you get closer to the canyon entrance proper, the grass peters out, leaving you a pretty clear path. On top of that, the rocks in the creekbed were surprisingly stable, allowing me to hike nearly at "trail speed."

The payoff waterfalls and petroglyphs exceeded expectations. I'm sure they were pretty spectacular a week or so ago withe recent rains, but they were still quite impressive, including a nice swimming hole at the upper falls, which offered a clear, 5-6-foot-deep pool at its foot.

Above the falls, I hiked up to the high point above and to the west, which offered a nice overview of the falls cascades from above.

I also explored ascending the drainage further, but soon found it choked with more of the usual, flesh-ripping flora. Not interested in a bloodletting adventure, I retraced my steps and headed back.

I didn't encounter a single other hiker on the trail until just before returning to the Broadway TH.

I marked a few points of interest on my route, including a camping spot above the pools.

This one truly exceeded expectations--particularly for an off-trail route. I'll be back.

This was somehow my first time up this canyon. Apparently, I have been missing out.

I started from the Broadway Trailhead at 7:30 in the morning. There were two parking spots left when I started. It was an absolute gorgeous desert morning and a pleasant stroll to the Canyon. Tough to beat that stretch of Sonoran desert, which I found myself appreciating even more when I thought about how much desert was lost to fire in recent years out there. The going up canyon was your standard boulder hop. I came across running water at nearly four miles on the dot form the trailhead and it was pretty much stunning from there. A spectacular set of falls that is enhanced by traces of those who came before us. This area was no doubt a special place for the early inhabitants of the Superstition Mountains and a millennium or more later its main attraction, water, is still drawing in visitors.

I started from the Broadway TH to get a little more mileage in. There is an actual trail that starts just past the fence, but it soon goes into the wash and from there it's all rock hopping, until it turns into bouldering. I was expecting at some point that it would transition to more slickrock since it seemed like that one small area seems like it gets posted by everyone. Several times I was considering turning around because it was more work than I was in the mood for.

Once I got to the waterfall, my first thought was that no way was I going to make it up that. There was an obvious route up, but it was too exposed for my comfort. I've been dealing with benign positional vertigo the last month or so, so that wasn't happening. I spotted a route to the left that was steep and loose, but not exposed. I got up to the top of that route and was near the top of the falls and ready to turn back when I spotted some petroglyphs. I was able to find a few clusters within eyeshot without having to go much further. That was enough for me. Maybe on a better day I might have been more adventurous to head up higher, but at this point my main concern was how I was going to get back down.

I took my time getting down, making my steps very carefully. Once I got to the bouldering part, I made better time going downhill. On the way in I was expecting the hike back down to be even rougher, but gravity helped me out. It's also easier to spot the best route from above working your way down.

I saw 3 hikers in the canyon on my way down and talked with them a bit. Saw a family on their way in about a half mile from trailhead and that was about it. a younger group at the trailhead was getting ready to head out, maybe to the cave.

This ended up being harder than I expected it to be, but I'm glad I did it and made it as far as I did. Everything was pretty dry, but I don't think I would have enjoyed hiking up the wash with any appreciable amount of water to avoid and make it even harder, or get my feet wet. and then the idea of being near the waterfall and wet steep rock was also a big non starter.

This hike was to check Hog Canyon after this dry spell to see if any water survived and the short answer was no. With day temps pushing 100, this was probably going to be my last “hot hike” as we should be getting relief soon. There are new homes along Cloudview and looks like they are putting in new streets too. Hiked with my old friend T for the thousandth time. We started mid-morning and took leisurely pace heading up. We decided to route up the wash and then return trail above the bank for variety. Of course the wash is filled with grasses and hidden rocks so going was slower. We spent considerably more time than usual scouring the cliffs in the lower canyon for signs of petroglyphs without luck. There were sings of fairly recent cut branches from someone’s kind trailwork.

It was hot and dry as expected with no visible water anywhere including none in the upper waterfall pools area. Thought I heard the click of hooves a few times, but saw nothing bigger than a lizard. Surprising saw no snakes but did find some old coyote scat. There were flocks of quail and other small birds but no raptors. Flies were more persistent than usual. Overall it was uneventful. Considered making that last stretch up canyon to the ridge, but just tapped out as it got to be 98. It may have gotten to 100 but I was out of phone range. We burned it back down to Cloudview and grabbed a late lunch. I like it better (in fact I like all canyons better) with water. Not sure when I’ll be back but definitely want to enjoy it again with greenery.

Construction has begun on the end of Cloudview where I would normally park. Lots of private property signs up too that seemed to block usual access, so we went over and started from Broadway TH. Of course lots of water and nicely flowing falls back there after all the storms.

We started our hike from the west end of Cloudview and walked the street to the area we picked up the trail running toward the canyon. After passing the gate, we reached the area we climbed the fence at 1.5 miles. We chose the cairns going to the right which took us on a pretty good route to the mouth of the canyon. Once into the canyon the trail was well worn and cairned up the where we turned to go into the waterfall. I always enjoy this hike, especially the fun scramble to the top of the waterfall to reach our objective.

I had not hiked to the falls since February 2020. Water was flowing then. Today they were not. It rained just before Christmas, so I waited for today to take the hike. I drove the 2-mile dirt road to save my legs for hiking. I found a nicely cairned trail which connected with the wash about half a mile up. There was very little water flow when I reached the pools area, The water hole at the final approach to the falls was wet, but no water. The overflow pool, at the base of the lower falls pool, was also dry.

I expended a lot of energy removing rocks from the dirt road, so I opted not to climb above the bottom pool. Been there; done that.

Two hikers arrived just as I was leaving. It was their first hike in the canyon. I informed them of the option of climbing to gain access to the other pool levels and headed back on my return hike. About 10 minutes later another hiking duo appeared. I offered information and continued my descent. Just before reaching the Hog Canyon Fence. I encountered a solo hiker and a group of four or five hikers. By then it was after 2:00 P.M., so I do not think they would be hiking very far.

With all the rains lately, I thought I would take a chance and see if there was any water still going in the Superstitions. This canyon is always a treat, even if it's dry.

The first part of the fun is driving to the boundary via Cloudview Road. I have hiked this from the Broadway TH and from Cloudview. That adds on 4-5 miles of flat and boring to this hike. The past few times, I have driven up the lovely "road" to the boundary. Looks like there's been a little water passing through this area, as the road was in pretty bad shape.

The 2nd part of the fun starts when you drop down into the Hog Canyon drainage. The grass is so high right now, as high and thick as I have ever seen it. We saw no water or even signs of water at the start. However, as we neared the narrows of section of the canyon, we could hear water running. That was a good sign. Once we reached that section, there was some flow to the creek. But, as soon as you get out of that area, it dried up. There were lots of pools and LOTS of gnats, mosquitos and other flying swarms of nasty little creatures.

I thought, well, that was it, no water at the falls. But, as we got closer to the falls, we started hearing water flowing again. Before we made the "turn" up to get to the falls area, the creek was flowing again. The water from flowing pretty steady from the lower falls down the drainage to the creek. We made our mandatory pictures at the lower area and climbed up to the next falls. That was flowing nicely too and the pool was clear. After exploring a little up there, we all had a nice "soaking" in the pool. That was really nice. Hard to believe there was this much water up here in August.

We started down and did the reverse boulder hopping back to the truck. Everywhere is green these days and the Superstitions are the greenest I have ever seen them this time of year. Of course, everything that is green now will turn brown once the water supply gets cut off. And, with this much growth, it will be that much more fuel for any upcoming fires. Let's hope the fire gods spare this area for a while. Enough of this wilderness has already been roasted beyond repair.

An excellent day in the Supes.

After the recent rain, I wanted to check out Hog Canyon and see if the seasonal waterfall was flowing. I suspected the answer was no given the extreme drought conditions lately, but since rain has been so rare around Phoenix of late, it seemed like this could be the best chance to see it flowing for the foreseeable future. I last visited Hog Canyon in late February last year, and the waterfall was flowing nicely and my friend and I had the canyon to ourselves. We started from Broadway Trailhead that day; this time I started from the Lost Goldmine Trailhead at the west end of Cloud View Drive, which I assumed would be far less busy than Broadway Trailhead.

The first mile and a half of the hike meanders directly north along the fence line of the residential area, then takes a sharp left turn along another barbed wire fence. From there, we started following the creek bed leading into Hog Canyon. It was dry early on, but I still hoped there might be some water at the falls--the creed bed was dry in that area last year even though the falls had plenty of water. As we entered the canyon, the creek bed was still dry, even in areas where I'd waded through calf- to knee-deep pools last year. The canyon was even more beautiful than I remembered, and I noticed a few natural arches high along the southern wall of the canyon.

I was disappointed to hear voices up ahead, and we passed a group of four hikers...we wouldn't have the falls to ourselves this time. We finally started to see some pools of water and a few small trickles over the last half mile leading to the falls, but when we made the final left turn and saw the stains on the canyon wall, my suspicions were confirmed: not even a trickle. The pool at the base of the falls had some water, but the water stains there indicates the level was a few feet below where it would typically be during the wet season.

Still, I was excited to climb up above the dry falls and check out the petroglyphs that I'd missed last time. It's a quick scramble around the left side of the falls, and up on the ridge, I immediately found two nice panels of rock art, consisting almost entirely of drawings of bighorn sheep. I climbed down from the ridge to the top of the dry falls, and there was a metate-like formation in one of the boulders, though it was more likely a coincidence than an artifact.

There were a two or three more panels of petroglyphs just north of the main waterfall, near an area where a second, slightly shorter waterfall would would flow--I really wish I'd climbed up last year when the water was flowing. Today, the second fall had only a trickle of water with a shallow pool at the bottom. I climbed up around the right side of that pool to the next level above the second falls, and the canyon opened up again up there. I found a few more petroglyphs and decided to start back down, having seen most of the attractions up there.

Two other hikers climbed up above the falls before I went down, and once I was back at the bottom, yet another group of people showed up--a far cry from the solitude my friend and I enjoyed last year. This time, on the hike out, we passed three or four more groups on their way in--another reminder about how crowded the Superstitions have become in recent years, even some of the formerly off-the-beaten-path spots.

On the hike out, the clouds were spectacular and cast shadows all over the Superstitions. Despite the dry waterfall and the lack of solitude, it was still a beautiful and very enjoyable hike, with perfect weather. It had been almost eight months since I'd hiked in the Superstitions, and it was great to be back. Hopefully there will be more rain this spring and I can return when the water is flowing again.

Add a little rain and this place comes to life. I opted for Hog Canyon after the nice soaking we got on Saturday. I wanted to avoid the circus at Massacre Falls. There were a couple of groups of other hikers in there, so the solitude I used to get from this trail has diminished. The boulder hopping requirements, route finding and general difficulty of this hike will always serve as a filter for this place, but I hope this does not become the next “big thing” and becomes overrun.

There was no water at the start near the boundary gate. That quickly changed as the creek started to fill out. The further we went up, the more water there was. There were tons of other falls flowing off in the distance up on the cliffs as well. By the time we reached the “turn off” for the falls, there was no doubt they would be flowing strong. The first glimpse from the little ridge that takes you the falls confirmed that.

I have not seen this much water flowing at these falls before. It was gushing. Lots of people up there, but it was still nice to visit.

[ youtube video ]

The water made the hopping a little more challenging, that is, until I stepped in and got my boots wet. Then, walking down the creek got much easier. No need to avoid getting wet when you are already soaked (my feet at least). The usual payment for visiting this cool canyon – catclaw mauling, was also in effect. I have learned lessons from past encounter and had on long pants and long sleeves, but my hands still managed to get shredded by the “guardians of the canyon”.

I hiked up with some friends and their kids. I met up with some other hikers that knew me from a Facebook group. The highlight of the hike, besides all the water, was finally meeting Kathleen Brooks and her wonderful dogs – all 4 of them.

So, a great day in the Supes. A nice visit to Hog Canyon. My only concern is the herd mentality of social media. I regret posting pictures on some of those groups now. I think I need to scale that back or I will be partly responsible for the Instagramization of this place.

I ended up with the day open so I decided to get up on the Superstition Ridge again to enjoy the views. I noticed there was a route up Hog Canyon so I thought I'd give that a try. The route up wasn't bad but I did run into some scree. At one point I slipped and the back of my hand hit an agave and poked a vein. That was a bloody mess for a simple stick but after a few bandages and some duct tape I was on my way. I was happy to be on the ridgeline and saw several hikers but they were spread out so it was not crowded. The I took in the views and watched a helicopter flying around on my way to Siphon Draw trail. When I made it to the flatiron area there were lots of people and I was spent. I stopped there to eat and recharge for the trip down. I started out a little stiff going down Siphon Draw but loosened up about half way down. I passed some guy that looked like Jim_H heading up and from his triplog I'd guess it was him. The final leg across Jacob's trail wasn't bad. I was happy to be on a flat trail and watched the moon over the ridgeline, looked up Spirit Canyon and strolled back to the Broadway trailhead.

Denny asked what I was doing Saturday and I said "Hog Canyon". We start from the Broadway TH to add a few miles. I miscalculated the time and we got there 30 minutes before first light. Fortunately the moon was bright and we hiked without headlamps following our moon shadows for the first half hour. The morning was cool but not cold and we didn't hike in sunlight until 10 am. I never hiked this before :o and thought the canyon would start as a trail in the low desert but it was rock hopping all the way. Denny spotted an arch high up but we resisted the temptation to climb up. The creek was dry and the bouldering proved to be a good workout. We were surprised to see crystal clear water at the falls with water trickling down into the pools. We decided to climb up the falls and were in hog heaven to see more falls and an even larger pool. The conditions today were perfect. We pigged out on chili dogs afterward. Thanks for the hike Denny.

We started at the Broadway side and made our way over to the canyon. Lots of water flowing still at the end "waterfall". Just another beautiful day in the Superstitions.

I first hiked into Hog Canyon over 15 years ago. I went in without knowing anything about it. I had no gps, no cell phone, very little water and unrealistic expectations. I was going to get up to the ridgeline. I ended up cliffing out in several places and almost falling to my certain death or sustaining serious injuries at the very least. I hiked out 8 hours after I had started and limped back to the Broadway Rd lot.

This experience made me respect the Superstitions and realize this place can kill you if you are not prepared to meet the challenges.

Fast Forward to yesterday and I went in for the 4th time and was treated to a magical day. I wanted to go last week, but the snow diverted me to other locations. I knew the water would be flowing this weekend, so I hiked in hoping to see the waterfalls flowing.

The “trail” is the same as it has always been. The wash – boulders, grasses, catclaw, et al. The added bonus was the water that was flowing for most of the way up. I would guess if I came in earlier in the week, I would have gotten pretty wet. There were signs of a pretty heavy flow. All that snow and rain we had has to go somewhere.

The canyon passage area was so beautiful. 100’s of tiny little falls with the canyon walls and cactus. This is why I like this place so much. I could see water still trickling down from all sides. I imagine by next week, barring any new rains, this canyon will revert to the dry wash it usually is.

I could hear the falls as I approached the little bend. When I finally arrived, I could see a strong flow coming off the large falls, and water coming from the pool making even more falls. My plan was to take some long exposure shots of the running water. I spent almost an hour taking pictures and exploring the falls area. I climbed up to see the petroglyphs and the falls up top were flowing very nicely as well.

I looked up at the ridgeline and thought about my near-death encounter years ago. No ridgeline adventures for me this day, but I am sure that one day, I will head up there again and make the loop I wanted to years ago.
