Another trip up to Highline to continue knocking off sections. This time, we wanted to pick up where we left off last week, so we drove up FS31, where recent mastication was done on the Manzi, leaving the road in pretty decent shape, with the last couple hundred feet pretty rocky but not horrible. We headed east before hitting our stopping point last week at just under a mile in. We continued east, stopping in the pine forest on Roberts Mesa, taking a break there before heading back. On the hike back, we came across a trail crew changing out a stick/wire fence for a Highline gate (S was the first one to use it lol), a solo hiker, and a mountain biker heading east. Except for a tenth of a mile or so, this entire section was a pretty recent reroute that no longer drops down and runs along Ellison Creek before climbing back out. Instead, it stays 'high' contouring around before meeting up with the old alignment just south of Myrtle Point. It definitely added some mileage but reduces the AEG, which I like. Also, the Myrtle Trail junction was moved east; there are a good number of carins at the junction to let you know. Tons and tons of Elk tracks all along this section, as well as bear tracks and fresh scat. I did see the back half of an elk near one of the drainages, but it ran before I could see if it was a cow or bull.

The weather was a bit chilly in the morning with the high clouds and wind, but warmed up to the mid 60's in the afternoon, which is nearly perfect. Another section checked off, with several more to go.

Part III of our quest to hike the entire length of the Highline Trail. We decided this time to start at the Two Sixty TH and hike west. No one at the TH a little after 8, where it was already 60 degrees with a light breeze. I had worked a football and baseball game the night before and my legs were having one of those days so we hiked a little past the Drew junction, stopping there for a quick break and to talk with a volunteer from this past week's race who was removing the tags from the trees/brush. This section was in great shape with no reroutes (surprisingly), but it was kind of meh for me. Yes, it was a nice forest walk, maybe I'm just too picky.

Winds picked up to 20-25mph mid-morning, and apparently that wasn't gusty enough to cancel the controlled burn the FS started yesterday. Another piece of Highline is done, with still many more to go.

Tremendously challening, beautiful and rewarding day in Rim Country. Cold and windy for the first few hours then basically perfect. The late afternoon up on the rim was just spectacular.

Fantastic views all day. Had one rough patch from about miles 21 - 27, then pulled it together and maintained the rest of the way. Met the girls at mile 37 for a coke and a smile :)

So happy to finally pull the trigger on this AZ classic :y:

Another day with S up north on the highline. Took the control road over to 144 and took that up until it met the Highline. FS continues to use the masticator on the Manzi in sections, with a good chunk recently done along the 144. Parked where the 144 ended at Highline and headed west first to connect with the piece we stopped at last week. Started on the old alignment through a grassy meadow, where we made a brief stop at a rain collector, where we had 2 black friends meet us before continuing west on the new alignment. I continue to be amazed at the amount of reroutes on this trail, with a good majority making zero sense on why they did it, but who am I? Hiked 4 miles up to the small ridge that we stopped at last week, before taking a quick break and starting back. Once we got back to 144, we continued west, hitting up new (to us) section of trail. There is a pretty new reroute that now takes you high up, contouring around the side of the old alignment, now bypassing the grassy meadow section, which no longer meets up with the Myrtle Trail junction. The newest image from this area on GE is from 11/23, and the old alignment still shows. We decided to stop up on a small ridge just to the west of Ellison Creek (we'll save that descent/ascent) for next time. Made the uneventful trip back to the 4Runner. The temps were around 70 degrees most of the day with a nice 15-20 mph wind to help keep it cool.

On the drive back, we decided to make a quick stop at the Dude Fire Memorial, where we thought about hiking the small loop; however, there is crime scene tape blocking the entrance. Does anyone have any idea?

Another great day up north, as we continue to chew up some miles on the highline.

Back up in the Payson area to hit another section of the Highline. Headed out and parked at the end of FR144 to pick up the trail....though we were expecting a T-junction right from the beginning as downloaded routes showed the trail crossing the road perpendicularly. This is another area that has been affected by reroutes. We didn't see an obvious T at the parking area - the path from the parking area headed east - and we had wanted to head west. Turns out if we'd walked just a bit more, we would have seen that the path eventually hit the re-route, and would have given us an option to go in either direction. Instead, we picked up a bit of the old alignment after first checking out an old rain collector and saying hello to a pair of cows that were grazing in the area. The old path eventually allowed us to connect to the new alignment and off we went. After about four miles of easy walking, we found ourselves back up atop the ridge where we stopped last time. After a brief break, we turned back, staying on the new alignment and continuing on past where we parked to get some additional mileage in further eastward. The trail is in good condition, for the most part - some areas are a bit uneven from cows walking on it when it was soft. Much of the walking heading east was through large stretches of Manzanita, and didn't seem to get into nearly as many sections of oak/pine. We tried looking for the Myrtle Trail junction, though it seems to have disappeared - or requires some routefinding since the new alignment for the trail brings the tread quite a bit south of where the original path and junction were. We opted to stop before starting a descent into the Ellison Creek area, leaving that for next time.

Several hillsides in the area are seeing the same fate as that ridge with the masticated/mulched manzanita. We saw a couple of the machines that they are using to get that work done parked along FR144. As we looked more closely on the drive out, it seems the forest service mows down the manzanita and understory periodically - we could see evidence of sections having been done in prior years once we knew what to look for.

On our way out, we made a stop at the Dude Firefighter Memorial Trail, but found the trail access closed/blocked off with crime scene tape. Seems the tape has been there for about a month at this point.

Wildlife: plenty of birdsong, a squirrel, occasional butterflies and lizards, and a pair of cows. There were fresh elk prints along the trail but we didn't manage to catch sight of any larger wildlife.

Other People: None!

S and I headed up north to continue hiking Highline. Last week, we hiked westward from the Washington Park TH, so we opted to head eastward this time. Again, no cars in the lot when we started a little before 8:30. We first headed north on the AZT to check out the old Piper Fish Hatchery area. Really, nothing left but a nice area filled with tons of Raspberry, Aspen, and flowers. After checking out the area, we headed back down and headed east on Highline. The trail is in great shape, but there are numerous reroutes that add a good amount of mileage. My guess the changes are to accommodate the mountain bikers as a ton of switchbacks have been added, but not positive. We stopped for a bit at Dude Creek, which had a good amount of water with thickets of Raspberries and more Aspen. We climbed up to a ridge just past Dry Dude Creek, we noticed the Manzanita were obliterated as the FS masticated the area of Manzi, leaving the Oak behind. Apparently, cutting down live Manzanita and leaving the shredded dead pieces behind is the FS's way of fire prevention. Stopped for a break there before the uneventful hike back.

Beautiful area overall with the constant transition from Oak, Juniper, Manzanita to Pine. Came across 2 doe and a young buck, a Kingsnake (I think), and zero people, which is perfect. We will definitely be back to continue our Highline journey.

Another visit up towards the rim and back to the Washington park TH - this time to head out along the Highline eastbound and away from the portion that is shared with the AZT. We arrived to an empty parkinglot, but before we got on our way we decided to head north along the AZT / Colonel Devin Trail to have a look at the Pieper Fish Hatchery and spring. While there were some rusty artifacts (hardly any really), and no obvious structural remains that I could see, the area is lush with greenery - plenty of Aspen on the hillside, thickets of raspberry and the ground was carpeted in periwinkle.

After our quick diversion, we headed back to pick up the Highline trail. The trail is in good condition, though it deviates a lot from the "official" track that is laid out on topo maps. It seems that there have been a number of reroutes, making the grade more gentle, often with the addition of a number of switchbacks. The scenery is beautiful, and the walking is easy, though as much as I don't really adore steep grades, the switchbacks sometimes seemed rather ridiculous.

When we crossed Dude Creek, we opted to have a look a bit upstream - though we didn't get too far, as the thickets of raspberries started encroaching and we didn't want to get our feet wet. The watercourse is quite lovely in this area, flowing gently over bedrock. After poking around a bit, we continued onward, eventually heading up to a ridge - from afar, we thought it may have been fire damaged, but noticed healthy green shrubs/trees dotting the hillside. Once we arrived, we realized that the forest service had brought in machinery to mulch seemingly everything except the oak. The littered remains of the manzanita covered the ground. It was a sad sight to see, and one where I don't comprehend the logic that was applied. We decided to make this spot our turnaround, as the trail started heading back down towards another creek/drainage.

Wildlife: plenty of birds provided a soundtrack for the day, saw numerous butterflies, lizards, grasshoppers, and a very healthy gopher snake. I think I caught sight of the tail of a garter snake heading off into the grasses, but it was moving too quickly. Missed seeing several deer since I was lagged behind, taking photos of flowers, as per usual 😆

Other people: none, until we returned to the trailhead - a pair returned to their car (the only one there besides ours when we got back) as we were getting ready to head home.

Didn't look for the actual spring to see if it's contained within a box or piped - there is good clear flow in the fish hatchery area.

This is a hike to See Spring, See Canyon, and the Highline Trail to the Drew Trail.

I was jonesing for some color, and this was my last chance to get a color hike in for a while.

🍁 See Spring Trail #185
Based on the popularity of this trailhead (TH) in the fall, I knew I needed an early start. It was 40 degrees at 7:30 a.m. at the TH, and there were about six parking spots remaining. I passed a few people on my way to See Spring. There was still color remaining, but it was probably a week past prime. Getting there early bypassed the crowds, but it also didn't allow time for the sun to get high enough in the sky to light up the maples. There were two groups camping at the spring.

🍂 See Canyon Trail #184
Next, I thought I'd sample this trail to check out the color there. There were pockets of color, but nothing spectacular. Originally, I was going to hike to the rim and back, but the smoke from campfires had me turning around just above Nappa Spring.

I started seeing more and more people. Close to the turnoff for See Spring, I passed a conga line of 30+ hikers. I half expected to see a Greyhound bus when I got back to the parking lot.

⛰️ Highline - Drew from See Canyon
@Tortoise_Hiker turned me on to this section for fall color a couple of years back. It's his little slice of maple pie. Colors were good here, and I only saw two people (a plus). I went past where Denny normally turns around and continued to the Drew Trail. Some of the best color of the day was through this section.

Of note, there is trail work going on to improve the track. It looks like they might be working east to west and even doing some more reroutes. I hiked down one reroute that is still in progress about a mile west of the intersection with the Drew Trail.

https://www.nationalforests.org/regiona ... initiative

Back at the parking lot, it was a zoo. Cars were parked more than three-quarters of a mile away along the side of the road, making it a single-lane road.

It’s peak leaf peeping time below the rim and I decided to hit one of my favorites – See Canyon. I arrived at the trailhead at about 7am. There were some cars/trucks parked already, but there were still spots available and there were no cars parked along the road.

I saw a few triplogs mentioning the maples/oaks along the connected Highline Trail, so I decided to add a couple of miles up that trail as well. Very nice after about 1.5 miles in. Peak colors for sure.

After I made it back to the See Canyon Trail, I turned off on the Spring Trail and climbed up a bit and made my way to creek. I hike up that the rest of the way. I could hear the throngs of humanity along the trail as I slowly made my way up the creek.

The colors were really spectacular for sure. I hiked back down along the trail and made my way back to the creek and hiked down that the rest of the way back to the trailhead. So many people out enjoying the colors.

I wanted to get some long exposure shots along the creek and had some success. The contrast between the bright sunlight and the shaded creek made that tough. In some places, you just had to point the camera in any direction and take a picture.

I really love this trail. I am glad I was able to enjoy the fall colors this year.

The trailhead parking area was completely full and cars were parked along the narrow road in for at least ½ mile. Crazy busy.

I wound up with an open morning so I ran up to See Canyon Trailhead. The dirt road going in was in good shape. Fine for most cars. There was one other car in the lot when I got there. I started hiking around 8am to blue skies and temps in the 40's. I hiked east on Highline for a couple miles then backtracked to the car. Trail was in good shape. There was a little fall color close to the turn around point. I think it is still a week or so early for the majority of Maples to change colors. It seemed like only 20ish% had color. Squirrel and bird was it for wildlife.
I dropped my jacket and empties off at the car and headed up to see Spring. A few more cars in the lot at 10am. Just a little color up to the See Canyon/See Spring signed junction at around 3/4 mile mark. Once you get going on See Spring trail the color picks up some. The only wildlife was the two dogs running at me barking around where the color picked up. The owners leashed them and I took the opportunity to check out the color and take photos while they continued up to the spring. I'd say the best color was the section from 1 -1.5 miles. Still over half of the leaves are still green.
when I finished See Spring out and back I checked out the trees around the parking area. I would say only about 10% have changed color so plenty more color chances in the next week or two. 14 cars in lot when I left around noonish.
I hit the little store across the street when you hit pavement for a drink and snack. I like to support the locals. Unbelievably it was my only stop all the way back to Mesa!! :o :y:
Room for much more color but I really enjoyed the outing and stayed upright the whole day!! :D :y:
