It had been 2.5 years since I had hiked to Picketpost, so I was a bit overdue.

We got to the TH about 7:15 and the parking lot was empty when we arrived. It was 38 degrees when we started the hike, but we warmed up quickly.

The ascent and descent went well, probably better than the previous 5 times that I have done this hike.

We had the summit to ourselves so we hung out there for a bit. The mailbox is still there.

It was a nice day to do this hike. On the way back down we met a few coming up. There were a few obvious snowbirds -- it's a giveaway when someone asks if you have seen any snakes on a winter morning in the 40's.

We started the hike at the crack of 9:00 AM, with the promise from Chums that we'd be done in time for me to get home to watch sportsball.

Brisk temps to start, or as Linda would say, "A tad warm." The parking lot was almost full, so we knew we wouldn't have the mountain to ourselves. We made our way to the top where we enjoyed a 20-minute cool-down. Chums started getting nervous with all the foreign-speaking hikers up top (Not a single Norwegian!), so we headed back down.

We passed more masses on their way up as we were headed back.

Thanks for the invite, Chums, and good hiking with Ryan again. :scared:

It'd been 5 years since I've stood on this summit and the first since the Telegraph Fire burned right up the chute. I was impressed to see that the expected fire damage was less than anticipated. Burn and drought aside, the geology of this mountain is as impressive as always and still an enjoyable way to spend a couple of hours on a pleasant weather day.

All our devices were within a few feet of each other but HAZ says I climbed over 100 feet more. Must've been the pee breaks.

While discussing avatars, the penguin discovered why the eagle is always pictured in profile. Thus was our day.

Happy Festivus! Zane and I got an early start to avoid the sun delivering the mail. We saw 5 backpackers heading down from 1 overnighter and 2 hikers heading up on our way down. The trail was easy to follow without gps until about 1.5 miles up.

Like Flatiron, Picketpost has a western approach, making it more tolerable for a morning hike during the hot season.

Got a relatively late start at 6:40 am. Met a pair of hikers coming down as I neared the top. One other hiker joined me on the summit, and saw one more coming up as I was on the descent.

The west side shade, and a stiff breeze on the top, and some moderate cloud cover made it bearable.

Afterwards, I went over to hike a portion of the LOST trail up the canyon, but it is closed off from the bottom for the highway expansion project. I drove to top (just beyond the tunnel) and hiked down the old road to the old tunnel. Some bats have taken up residence in the tunnel. Just below the tunnel, an ADOT contractor was coming up the trail to clear it for some planned blasting. I thought about going down the climbing access to explore the bottom of the canyon, but the employee told me the road would be closed soon for the blasting, so I just called it a day so I didn't get stuck on the wrong side of Phoenix.

Finally got back to the top after 20 years and 2 attempts where I bailed. I did this nearly 10 years ago with my family when my kids were 7 and 8, not sure what I was thinking. Getting to where we bailed that day made me more impressed that we got that far.

Wally and I got a start around 6:17am, which made for a mostly shady ascent as we got higher and then headed into the canyon. A few spots seemed like they had exposure until you got near them, then it wasn't so bad. The ascent into the canyon got vertical and very steep to where there was some mild exposure.

As we got out of the canyon and to the plateau, I lost the trail for a bit but then picked it up again. On the way back I stayed on it. The views up there are really nice, especially to the south and southeast, where you never get a bird's eye view of that area. I put my hiking sticks away as we got to the more vertical part and once we got to the plateau I realized I lost one. Fortunately a hiker behind us grabbed it and returned it to me at the summit.

New mailbox there dated April 2023. Several notebooks to sign in, and a pack of seaweed snacks, which I passed on. On the way down we followed a spur trail to the other summit on the south side which faded away before the summit. When I was up there 20 years ago, I had done more exploring around the plateau to see more views, but at this time of years the foxtails were out in full force and I could feel them digging into my ankles after just a few feet of the trail fading away.

The descent was slow, had to be very careful not to wipe out. Put my sticks away again and held onto rocks and vegetation as necessary. My knee was just starting to feel normal after the 5057 hike 2 weeks ago, and on the way up and down the steep section it started acting up again. At the one bare rock washout I was getting off the trail and headed right into the exposed area and had to hike back up to avoid cliffing out.

Once we were on the trail it was very nice to be back on level ground, and the hike back to the parking lot took hardly any time. The early start really helped with avoiding the heat. Feeling much better after the steep hikes after doing the big one to 5057 2 weeks ago, but that one had much more AEG.

Chris needed some AEG and I was in. That last time I hiked to Picketpost summit was 2008 with some guy named Denny. It seemed steeper than I remember but a lot of the terrain was familiar. We started early and it was nice and cool. We rode the mountain shadow up the side and didn't catch sunshine until the ascending upper section. There were a few other hikers with us on top but the trail was not busy at at all. The hike down was steep but the footing seemed better to me than coming that down Hiero from 5057. Once hiking out on the normal trail the breeze kept it nice.

Brian and I left Tucson early and drove to the Picketpost trailhead. It would be our first time hiking in this area. The parking area had room for at least 30 cars and the lot was probably half full on a Monday morning. There were some nice shaded picnic areas at the trailhead. There were restrooms at the trailhead, also.

We started off by going South on the AZ trail. After 1/4 there was a Y-junction with signs telling us to go left for Superior, AZ, stay straight for AZ trail, etc. There was no mention of which direction to take for Picketpost mountain. It was a bit confusing but we checked the map and determined that we needed to continue on the AZ trail. After hiking a total of about 0.7 miles on the AZ trail, we saw a branch heading East. No sign, nothing. Again, we determined that this was the trail to Picketpost Mtn. Why is there no sign here??? It's confusing and annoying. If you want to hike this mountain, make sure you bring a route with you and follow it.

The pretty well-maintained trail continued heading up ridgelines going directly toward Picketpost Mtn. We wondered how we would get up there because looking ahead it looked pretty steep. Originally we thought the trail would go to the left or right and then up the South or North ridges from there. But, we were a bit surprised that the trail went right up the middle, following a canyon to a saddle in the middle and the peak was in the back, out of sight for most of the hike.

We saw only 2 hikers on their way down as we were going up and 2 more hikers on their way up as we were going down. When you get higher up, you will see there are multiple branches. Just take the branch that goes UP and you can also look for white or red painted arrows along the way. There are also a few cairns that may be helpful. I would recommend staying out of the canyon just because it looked a bit messy there. In general, it's usually easier/faster to take a ridgeline trail or trails that are outside of any canyon to avoid messy brush.

When you get up higher, you will see a large flat area. Just keep following the trail up and you will see the summit up ahead. There's a mailbox at the top with a registry in it. It's a nice looking summit and there are few of mountains that appear to be endless. You can see part of the town of Superior, AZ to the East.

This hike felt like a mini version of the Flatiron because there were rock formations like the "siphon" along the way, many cliffs, and at the top there were 2 flat areas that stuck out and were probably surrounded by cliffs. The one that looked most like the flatiron was the flat area heading toward the town of Superior.

On the way down, we ended up going too far away from the main canyon and ended up reaching a dead end. There were good trails there probably just because over the years many people went the wrong way. Head back toward the main canyon and look for cairns. One you get on the right track, you will drop down a bit and see the "siphon" which is a large sheet of rock you can walk down. after that there was a steep rocky area to climb down and eventually we reached the main trail. Overall, this was a very enjoyable hike. If you enjoyed the Flatiron in the Superstitions but wanted something a bit milder and less crowded, this is the hike for you.

Left Phoenix around 2pm, on the trail a little after 3pm. The first scramble seemed to be the worst because I went left instead of right on the way up. Route finding wasn’t much of an issue overall.

Made it to the top in about an hour and a half. Snapped some shots and headed down after a few minutes to beat a gnarly looking storm cloud to the north. The same cloud all but disappeared on the way down. Return trip was pretty easy, although some Elvis Leg started in the ravine.

Cool peak, not as bad as I thought it would be.

Dec 2017 Made it to peak and thought to myself, that wasn't as bad as some said. Way down, plz don't end up in the ER!

Nov 2018 do it again as a plan C. Make it to top before other 2 I was with. Bouncing down and having fun with it.

Today-finally bring this one back. Surprised at the interest this posting received. The 10 of us kept it together without any major hiccups. Also looped off substantial time from 5 years ago. 😎

Hit the TH around 7:30 am with the original goal of doing Arnett Canyon. Of the two approaches, I prefer the southernmost one. For the first couple of miles, the attraction is the rock formations, as well as views of Picketpost from the north side. About 1.6 miles in, the "pretty section" begins, with trees and flowing water (likely just from the recent rains). There is some fall color, but still a lot of green. This might be a great Christmas hike ....

At the end of Arnett, I decided to continue on and do the Picketpost circumference loop. I saw no one until halfway through Telegraph Canyon, when I came across a solo trail runner, and then began running into a few groups going doing the circumference loop CCW.

The trail through Telegraph Canyon was a little hit and miss, but no worry about getting lost. There is a section of the HAZ route through this section that juts south out of the creekbed before circling back down. I saw no real sign of a taking that jog and just stayed more or less in the creekbed.

Eventually the trail/route connects with a 4x4 road, which the trail follows before peeling off on a trail that connects to the AZ Trail.

When I got to the turnoff for the summit trail, I decided to tack that on as well. Several groups on the trail, but not very many on the summit when I arrived. Temperatures were perfect and visibility was excellent.

After the descent, I circled one more time down the south approach to Arnett, so that I could check out the north approach on the return.

Great day for a hike.

My first time up Picketpost… what a pleasant surprise! I didn’t realize what a climb this would be… a good bit of climbing/clambering up rocks on all fours during last mile. Unfortunately, Trail finding gets a bit challenging during this last mile as well. Even worse is the graffiti (white and red arrows painted on rocks) by somebody very ignorant of basic LNT principles… painful to see. Fortunately, the views are spectacular by the time you summit, well worth the effort. Careful on the way back down, I found the trail finding more challenging (OK, ok… I lost the trail) heading back. Terrain is very steep and I went down on my pumpkin in several places… definitely take your time on way back down. Weather was great… parking lot was about a quarter full when I got there at 7:30am. I’ll definitely be returning to do this one again!

Just one other car at the trailhead when we arrived at 0900, occupied by a weird, shirtless guy who strangely decided to stand outside the restroom door while I was in there and tell me that “you and your friend are going to be all alone on the mountain today.” I told him I didn’t care, and that he’d better not be anywhere near that restroom door when I opened it. He then decided to go tell Daniela that same thing about being alone on the hike. She was also less than friendly with her response.

Muggy but overcast to start. When there was a breeze, it felt great, but the air was mostly stagnant. Sweatfest going uphill. Some new cairns and fresh arrows marking the route, which is unnecessary since it’s pretty worn in at this point. Seems like the steep section above the chute is getting more eroded. Saw about three billion ants, a thousand lizards, two millipedes, and six bighorn sheep while we were standing at the summit.

Descent was uneventful, mostly just trying to not fall. Very warm for the last mile or so. The shirtless weirdo was correct, nobody else all day, and luckily he was gone when we finished.

john suggested picketpost for today's hike
it's been three years :o
last did this with john and @dixieflyer in 2020
got going around 0520 or so
shade the entire ascent
not the most efficient route we've taken
spent a few minutes on the summit checking out the views
perfect weather
good route down for the most part
saw nine people, more than i would have thought
we took the trail into arnett canyon
found water in the creek about a mile and a half in
better to do this part in the spring or fall
john provided coffee for a little break in the ramada when we finished
nice hike in cooler than usual june temps
picketpost is always fun
thanks john :)

It's been too long since we have hiked Picketpost. Three years. Should be done annually.
A few more spider trails then the last time we hiked this. We got a bit off track a few times per usual.
Nice breeze and temps on the mountain. Great views.
Checked out the Lost trail into Arnett Canyon until we got to the Canary Island date palms.
Fun day. Thanks for driving Kelly. :)

Had originally planned on Pass Mtn Summit for this morning, but the weather looked so nice, I switched to Picketpost while I was driving.

Cool, cloudy, and breezy to start. There were a few other cars at the trailhead, but I had the mountain all to myself. Steadily worked my way uphill, enjoying the solitude. A few sprinkles near the summit, but hazy/dusty views from the wind.

Uneventful hike back downhill. Smacked my left shin against one rock, leaving a nice bruise. The Salewas I was wearing are incredibly grippy, but that means they also don’t pivot when I want them to, my own fault. Sunny for the final mile. Saw one hiker near the trailhead as I was finishing up. Nice day.

Most down low are dried out. Still some flowers on the cactus, palo verde, and higher up. Long past prime though.

A delightful trek up to the picketpost mountain Summit this morning with 2 friends who haven't been there before.

We got started at 620a and were blissfully in the shade the entire way up. The first climb we choose a not great way up, but we remedied that on the way down by sticking to the left. In general, I found the way much easier to find now that when I did this trail 5 years ago. It has definitely seen a lot more use, and the trail shows the wear. I don't mind that so much, but there really is a lot of spray painted arrows (blue, red, white...) as well as dripped white paint to mark the way. Sad graffiti on an otherwise beautiful trail.

There were TONS of wildflowers! All colors of the rainbow! I was pleasantly surprised, as I thought they would be mostly done by now. In addition to the wildflowers, all the cacti but the chollas were blooming. We saw many fuschia hedge hogs, the saguaros, pricky pear, and the Ocotillo! So beautiful!

At the top, there is a new mailbox. I hadn't realized the old one was gone (as is the bench), but my friend told me on the way up that there was only a flag. There was no flag, but the mailbox is inscribed with a date of 4/18/2023 compliments of the dbag hikers.

Not too many people were on the trail, but I guess it depends on your reference. Thankfully far less than say for flatiron. We saw 3 people total ahead of us. Thankfully, they were leaving the top as we were arriving up. It was nice to have the Summit to ourselves. As we left the Summit, another group was just arriving. We also saw a few more groups ascending as we descended. We wanted get an early start to beat the heat.

Wrote up my triplog in RS app, but for some reason it didn't save. Don't have time to recreate. It was a nice day on the mountain.

Headed up Picketpost with Jill & Janelle, starting around 0715. Sunny to start, but we were in the shade the entire way up. Saw five hikers and one dog on the ascent, but we had the summit to ourselves. Jill’s favorite part of the hike was the scramble, so I guess I need to keep coming up with similar type hikes for her.

High clouds rolled in for the descent. Saw lots of hikers, four more dogs, and one cat. Several people who didn’t know which way to go, despite endless red spray painted arrows and bright orange ribbons. One woman who was scared to death to cross one rock—I suggested she may not want to continue on since there was going to be a whole lot more of the same to navigate. Parking lot was overflowing when we finished just after 1100.

Decided to revisit the rock where I had the fall. Only about 3 miles round trip and didn't take nearly as long as before. The uneven steep terrain in the last 200 feet was a good reminder that all is not right in the knee. Fortunately no mishaps this time just some flashbacks :)
