Slide Rock State Park. Not really a hike, more a walk. So no route guide really needed. But don’t dismiss going. The park offers gorgeous and enchanting scenes of Oak Creek cascading down through a colorful canyon, with differing and varying vantage points and looks throughout.

The park sits a short distance north of Sedona, so fitting in a visit while your otherwise in the area doesn’t put you too far away. Note though in spring and summer the park attracts large crowds to wade in the water (no problem with tha), and even in off season by noon the crowds grow (again no problem with that). But to the degree you aim for serenity in nature, best to arrive right at opening at 8 am (note subject to variation, eg. snow conditions), on a crisp-to-cold fall/winter morning. I have been done so and been able to roam essentially alone for a couple hours.

Now on a visit, as time permits, go up both sides (a footwalk allows for crossing, though on my last visit water surges had pushed the bridge partially away from shore, but still crossable), and go both upstream and downstream (even under the road bridge), and along the overlook above. A fee is charged, not much, except in peak season, but unless you look take a luxurious wade in the water, peak season likely won't provide a serene setting.

Small photo note: The pictures in the photoset contain reasonable resolution to click the expansion button to the right under each photo, to get a large rview, to the degree you view hike az on a larger screen like that for a PC.

Stopped in at Slide Rock on the way home from Flagstaff. Had planned to take the family over to Bell Rock Pathway but one kid got a cold and decided just some general exploring around the creek at SLP would be a better option. Kids had a great time checking out 'caves' and climbing on the boulders.

This was my second trip to Slide Rock in the wintertime and I must say I really enjoy it. When the summer crowds are not present, this place reminds me quite a bit of Red Rock Crossing. Sure the rock color isn't quite there and it lacks the picturesque backdrop of Cathedral Rock but SLP is a ghost town in Winter whereas RRC maintains fairly crowds in my experience.

Nice and relaxing either way-- wonderful way to end a whirlwind trip up North before the year is over.

The grandkids and I headed up to Slide Rock early to get a few hours of play in before the crowds. They had never been there so it was all new for them. Issac hit the deck a couple times and doesn't have the "padding" grandpa does so he was a little gun shy going in. Lily loved the slide and made a friend for the last hour. With a little coaching Isaac gave it another shot and fun was had by all. They power napped on the way home and were doing cannon balls 3 hours later :o . Oh to have their energy..... :D

Took the grandkids for a swim and slide. I am in picture #4 with hat and sunglasses to protect my agreement with the Federal Witness Protection Program of course.

Quick visit to the park.
Walked the upper trail, then down and along the creek.
Beautiful place to walk and without the summer crowds!

Settled on sneaking into Slide Rock SP for a swim after being defeated by an approaching thunderstorm at the trailhead for Munds Mountain. Got to check driving Schnebly Hill Road off of my list at least.

Last of our 3 day goof off period (mini vacation), we spent the day playing in the water instead of doing any serious hiking.

big day for sierra playing at slide rock state park. i had never been here so i was hoping it would be as fun for her at it looked. it certainly was. we got there right when it opened and enjoyed some relative short lived solitude. the crowd grew and grew but overall the place certainly had a nice congenial atmosphere.

sierra sampled a bit of everything the park had to offer and really had a phenomenal time. she got pretty tired by about noon. we laid out a couple towels in the shade of the canyon and she promptly went right to sleep. woke up ready to go crazy again for a few more hours. we ended up being there most of the day. she was floating and sliding around in her tube right 'til the very end. she was too tired to even walk out of the park at the end of the day

I went to Sedona planning on going to West Fork, but since i missed the leaves by a couple weeks, and since West Fork was packed (which i'm sure it always is), I decided to just wander around in Oak Creek Canyon. I started off kind of at the beginning, and there's one picture you can tell isn't from Slide Rock (obviously that's from the beginning part). I wandered my way down, until i got to slide rock, and realized that there was no one there!. :D I stayed around slide rock for a couple hours for the right light, hoping there would be a sunset (of course there wasn't). I was shocked though....no one at slide rock, even though the water was really cold, it's always packed. I've always thought that area was beautiful, and being there completely by myself for a few hours was awesome!

We spent a long weekend in the area, and it was our first roadtrip since Caroline was born. We walked along the top trail and around the park with the jogging stroller. Then had lunch in a shady quiet area and napped for a while. Caroline played in a little sun tent with a few toys inside. Such a nice weekend.

I dont really know that you could call this a hike. It is a paved walkway with a store on the way to the swimming hole (which was closed :( ) This really was a dissapointment. 10 bucks for a short walk to a touron oriented swimming hole, which is closed periodically because of bacteria, plus the sight and sound of traffic above us wasnt a plus in my book. Some of the state parks seem like big rip offs.

This place is a fabulous surprise on the tourist route from Flagstaff to Phoenix. Thousands of photo opps from every direction and angle.

Ample parking, great views, areas to explore, several bathrooms, some with composting toilets (woohooo State of AZ!!)

Heed the "no swimming - high bacteria count" warnings if posted. You don't want to trade a fun day at Slide Rock for a week or so of bacterial infection, just go back at a later date instead.

We attempted to enter slide rock state park but the gate was closed. Not sure if it was after hrs. or out of season but for whatever reason it saved us from having to pay the $8.00 fee. we parked just north of the park entrance about a half mile on the side closest to the creek. There was a nice little path along the creek extending over a bridge and into the park. We hiked up along the creek climbing over all the different rock formations. It was very peaceful and calming. There were no other people at that time just a cute little duck couple. The sound of the creek silenced any sound of the automobiles driving on the road near by. This is a great place for older people or people with children to explore. extremely easy but very beautiful. A great place to visit after a longer near by hike.
