I've hiked all of this passage already, except for the almost half mile from the Rim Road to the General Springs TH. I save all my GPS tracks of every hike I do on my computer, so I can't have that gap when I look at my AZT progress. Also, even though I've hiked all the Highline Trail portion of this passage, I seem to have lost the track for that. it turns out they've done some extensive maintenance and re-routes on that section, but more on that later. :SB:

I started from the Washington Park TH and headed up the Colonel Devin to my main goal. I did this hike with my wife and kids 14 years ago :o, so it was interesting to be back again. Crazy how time flies. I think the kids did better then they would today, as they no longer have the patience to spend a day with a parent on a vision quest dayhike.

Less than a half mile in there was a cow next to the trail in the vegetation. Not used to seeing that. the beginning up this trail was very cool, almost chilly, and very shady. the vegetation as well as being in a canyon with the sun low in the sky helped with this. the creek was running nicely, which made for the rare pleasant experience of hearing running water while hiking in AZ. Very big contrast from Phoenix right now.

As I got higher the weather stayed cool and the wind picked up. I made it to General Springs, walked a bit further up the trail to make sure my tracks overlapped, and headed back. I also checked out the cabin, which is in very nice shape. On the way back down the trail, the wind was still pretty strong which made me have to take off my hat at times to avoid losing it. : rambo :

Went up to check out the railroad tunnel like we did in 2011. I forgot how dicey the trail is at the final ascent, very loose dirt and rock and nearly vertical. I checked the triplog from then and I noted the conditions as the same then. I have very dim memories and can't imagine now how we got the kids up and back along that section 8-[ .

From the railroad tunnel back to the trailhead was when I saw the most foot traffic. Lots of people on their way up. Saw 3 deer a half mile from the TH, 2 young bucks in felt and one doe. I hid behind a tree because I saw them first but I was soon spotted. They all stood and stared at me giving me time to get pics until I decided to start walking, then they bolted.

Ate lunch in my car at the trailhead and then headed out on the Highline westbound to get a track of the AZT that I've made by hiking it. I originally split the overall track at the 3 mile mark planning to only do 3 miles out and back. With the cooler weather than I expected, I decided to make it a 4 mile out and back. I did both a 4 mile out and back and got to the exact point where I had split the track at 3 miles. Why? Because this section of the Highline/AZT has several re-routes which after only 3 miles adds an extra mile. Some of these reroutes made sense. there was less elevation gain and in at least one case better views. However, I think even on the AZT website, the maps that show this passage are nearly the same as the AZT26 track on HAZ, which can give misleading info for the length of the hike if you're planning a dayhike. I was fine, but I can see how this has potential to cause problems for planning purposes. :SB: :M2C: On the way back I paid attention and hiked the old alignment, which is still there and still hikeable even with the sticks and rocks in place to try to hide it.

The views to the south along the Highline here of the vast ponderosa forest were a highlight. Very cool to see that after being in the desert heat so much lately. The other highlight was crossing Chase Creek, which is more of a small stream. There is sign there that states that fishing is not permitted. After seeing that I looked into a pool by the trail crossing and noticed several very small trout swimming there. I can't imagine anyone wanting to try to fish for something so small, but the sign is there for a reason obviously.

Pump Station Route, lame, not worth it, unless you hike some of it (maybe half mile) from the north side (Highline) to the red slickrock section. Colonel Devin is nicer (barely) than See Canyon Spring.

Needed to escape the heat so drove up to the rim Tuesday afternoon and was able to work right from my campsite. Ohh, technology :)

I’ve always wanted to do the RR Tunnel trail and it seemed like the perfect choice for a quick solo hike before returning to the valley. I arrived at the TH and there were no other vehicles there so I was psyched!

The descent is fairly steep with some loose rocks so I took it slow. There was a little bit of flowing water to the immediate left of the trail towards the beginning section. You keep going down until there is a fork. I actually found this trail sign a tad confusing since there were 3 different paths. You’ll want to start heading UP to get to the tunnel. The trail is fairly non existent in this portion and you’ll have to climb over some deadfall. There were some helpful cairns to lead the way. The climb was short, but it definitely got my heart rate up a bit!

Upon arriving at the tunnel you’ll see a large dwelling/ ruin to your right… it appears to not be original but it’s in decent shape. The tunnel itself doesn’t go back too far but the view looking out from the tunnel is stunning! It was nice and cool in there too which was great.

I walked around to get a better look at the dwellings from the top and noticed a faint path heading up to exit. It looked doable and like it would dump me on the road, but I opted to head back the way I came so I could enjoy the quiet trail a bit longer.

I noticed there was a stream on the map so I took a detour down to check it out before my climb out. It was completely dry, even after all the rain we’ve had. I turned around and headed back up the steep hill. The skies were starting to look questionable so I thought I made the right call. In fact it had just started raining just as I was finishing. Overall, a super cool short hike a unique destination. Really enjoyed my solo time on this trail!

For some reason, I've always skipped the side trip to the railroad tunnel. I had no idea it was so, uh, deep.
Apparently they gave up on this project after a few hours of effort.

Anyway, nice one and done I guess.

Postholed all over Fred for a while. Had some fun in a side canyon or three. Snow angels, and inappropriate sculptures. The usual.

We startled a through hiker who wasn't expecting snow art. Five or six (the last one wasn't so sure she would be social) were set to spend an entertaining night together at the cabin with some trail magic we decided to share.

Can't complain about wringing out another Arizona day in the snow. :y:

Last month I was up on the Rim and hiked on the Fred Haught Trail, starting from Rim Road 300. I liked the trail and decided to hike it again, this time starting from he Washington Park TH. We took the Devin Trail up to the Rim, with a side trip to the Railroad Tunnel on the way up.

The Devin Trail was nice and easy to hike on up the Railroad Tunnel; from there it was a bit steep and rocky up to the Rim Road. The Railroad Tunnel is worth seeing, although all the graffiti sucks.

Once on the Rim, we followed the Fred Haught Trail to the Fred Haught Cabin, stopping at the General Springs Cabin. From the Fred Haught Cabin, we did an out-and-back to the TH.

There was hardly anybody on the trail on the way up to the Fred Haught Cabin, but we met several hikers and backpackers on the way back.

The weather was great, and this was a very enjoyable hike.

After the hike we stopped at That Brewery in Pine for some rehydration and post-hike grub.

dry General Springs Dry Dry
General Springs looked dry, but there was filterable water in places in the creek that runs alongside the Fred Haught Trail.

Not sure where the actual Spring itself is. Some standing water on west side of the road, but it's drying up. General Springs Canyon had light flow with all pools full for about 1/3 of the way to Box Canyon along Fred Haught. Dry in sections after that, but still some intermittent flow and large pools occasionally. At Box Canyon, there is a lot of water again and great pools as Box Canyon was flowing into General Springs Canyon.

Took the team up to Payson this weekend and my up with Mel and Mark who joined us to visit the old Railroad Tunnel. 59 degree start to the hike was well welcomed. We weren't on the trail long before we veered off to explore the area around the old hatchery. Ponds still riddle the landscape with pipes and other pieces of the old laying around. Tons of ripe blackberries hang from the ends of thorny vines in that area. Made our way back to the trail and off to the tunnel. After visiting the tunnel we explored some direct routes to the top. The girls and I retreated back to the Colonel Devin trail and met up with Mel and Mark at the top. Enjoyed the views for a bit and headed back to Washington Park trailhead. A very photogenic butterfly visited with us for quite some time, many pictures were taken.

I wanted to get out of the phoenix heat for the day so I decided to take my father on a little adventure. We hiked down to the tunnel which was very rocky. When we got to the tunnel there was a lot of graffiti. When I started the hike I thought i picked a place I had never been but once I saw the tunnel I realized that I hiked up to it from Washington Park last fall. Either way my dad was hesitant on taking the trail back and decided to create a new route going straight up over the tunnel. We scrambled up the mountain for a mile. We finally got to the road and walked back to the car. By the time the hike was done it was around noon and it was starting to get hot.

The girls were out so it was time for the boys to escape the heat and do a trail that's been on my wish list for ages. There was even a smoldering fire on the rim road. Was surprised the road was still open. Had a great time and even took a detour and went to the fire guard cabin. Thank you Joe for providing the history of this tunnel!

Hiked up from Washington Park. 52 degree start at 7am, 77 degree at finish at 11:30. Easy trail to follow. In the trees, green everywhere, water to the left and right. Very pleasant hike up to the RR Tunnel split. The first sign you get to that directs you to the RR Tunnel is INCORRECT. Continue on the main trail to the next small sign 2 switchbacks up. Here you will find an easy enough trail to follow. After a bit, the trail becomes a scramble up the side of the mountain over loose rocks and gravel. Great views and fun trail. Saw a coral snake on the road section returning to the truck.

noticed this hike that @tough_boots had done a couple weeks ago
looked like a nice one
new territory for john and i
first time hiking from washington park
good roads getting there
got going a little after 0730, checking out the newly rerouted colonel devin trail
nice bridges and path on the lower section - well done
continued on an old roadbed after about a mile
took the detour over to the railroad tunnel, which was an interesting bit of history to visit
on up to the rim, then down a forest road to the general springs cabin where we caught the fred haught trail
very pleasant going through pine trees
water in the canyon at times
i greatly enjoy this terrain
found the cabin remains where we had a snack break
retraced our steps, except for accidently going down the powerline section :?
my bad
nice temps, good breeze, some high cloud cover
saw three people, all within a half mile of the trailhead
i've done pieces of all of the cabin loop trails, would like to hit what i've missed with a bigger hike
stopped for thai food in payson again
good hike with good company - thanks john :)

Wanted to find fall color with water involved without the crowds and I knew this area would offer some potential.

Upon reaching Washington Park my eyes caught a flame of red along the creekbed and I instantly knew I made the right decision.

I wanted to stretch my legs and check out the display further up so I decided to head on up to the RR tunnel since it was so close.
It was cool to finally see the tourist tunnel but unfortunately has so much graffiti coated on the walls of the entrance.

Temperatures on the rim have been absolutely perfect lately, comfortably warm during the day and nice and cool once the sun starts to set.
The remainder of the evening was spent underneath the canopy of foliage taking photos of one of the best displays of water and fall colors I have personally experienced.

Some past prime but yet side by side next to green, rather strange foliage patterns.

This has been on my to do list for a couple of years. With a planned day off and a picture perfect weather forecast along the Rim, I decided to make it happen today.

I loaded (and followed) the official route up the Colonel Devin trail, not knowing that there was a reroute of the first mile or so. A nice reroute as it turned out, but I didn't notice until I was coming down.

The railroad tunnel to nowhere was fun, worth the trip. I wish I had come back down the same way; bypassing #390 on the way down was not the shortcut I'd hoped for.

The absolute highlight of the hike, though, was the Fred Haught trail. The word that kept coming to mind was tranquil. A nice easy trail with a canopy of pine through most of it, I felt like I could walk all day.

My legs told me otherwise at Quien Sabe Spring, so I turned around there and found a spot for lunch. After lunch it was time to go home. Out and back hikes do that to me.

I saw one person the whole day. A man was walking down the RR tunnel trail not far from the rim as I was walking up.

The weather was as perfect as the forecast. Gorgeous!

Another glorified dog walk. Started at Washington, climbed to the rim, took Fred Haught down a couple miles, or so. Plenty of water, plenty of squirrels to chase. As with what is expected for this time of year, we ran the final tenth of a mile to the car to beat a down pour and nasty little storm cell.
