We started at the Echo Canyon Parking lot. We had originally planned to go down and back up the same trail, but we met a Ranger on the way down and she suggested we try the loop. Echo Canyon to Hailstone Trail to Ed Riggs. It was a great suggestion. It was about 92 degrees and nothing eventful, but saw some great rock formations on the way. NOTE: Ed Riggs is about 95% exposure (not much shade per Ranger and she was right).

Hike to the top of Quartz peak, started about 10am and make it back to the car around 4:00pm. My 68 year old dad was with our group. We thought he wasn't going to make it to the top as we made it to the top, a few minutes later he appeared in the rocks below. Yay Dad!! Lots of route finding, carins helped a lot, and crawling over large rocks I would say about 1/2 mile of that.

On our decent my dads legs started to cramp a bit so we took lots of breaks. He wants to do the Grand Canyon soon and this was a really practice for that.

This was are really neat area. The kids loved having lunch here. I tried to find a way down to the falls, but it would have taken longer than we had to get the kids down there. If we had more time, we probably would have. I posted two pictures where I thought we could make it down easily, they are the pictures of a wooden platform with a small solar panel, then the next picture is some rebar sticking out of a rock, it seems as though quite a few have taken this path down to the falls.

We did take our Yukon across the river, since we had seem a similar car do just that. The road going across the river is solid rock and the water wasn't flowing fast and wasn't deep. The roads are extremly washboarded no matter which road to take back to the main one.

We hike this on a Satruday (September 17, 2005) and there were lots of people on the trail. Went all the way to bell crossing and jumped once with the help of about 30 people who were supporting me and couting to 3 for about 5 minutes. I finally jumped. I would say the only bad part is the hike is in the sun about 99.9% of the way. We plan on going on a Monday so we can bring a friend of ours. All in all it was a good time and met some really nice people. Thanks to the boy who was going to jump with me.

We drove up to Flagstaff on Sunday, August 7 had a big breakfast at IHOP with the kids in tow. Around 9:45 headed out for the trailhead. Put the kids in their backpacks then started our hike around 10:30 a.m. It was a georgeous day, but their was a storm brewing as we could see the clouds and hear the thunder. Carrying an extra 23 lbs. wasn't easy, let me tell you. With the steady grade uphill, you really feel it, probably something I might have otherwise would not have noticed. I had to rest at least 3 times on the way up. The kids loved it. My husband was packing our 3 year old (33 lbs) and our 11 year old carried our water and the kids jackets and some snacks. We turned around to just before reaching the "top" due to lightening and the suggestion of others on their way back and glad we did, because just as we got to our Yukon it really started to rain. We put a movie on the for kids and me and my husband relaxed in the back and ate our lunch and listend to the rain.
